Considering it takes something like $1000 to get a game rated, that's basically what the ESRB charges to read some paper and watch a DVD of sample content. Yes, $1000 to watch a DVD. They can play the game a bit while they're at it.
As for the cost of an extra $1000 or whatever the ESRB would grossly overcharge for the "playing" service, that should amount to like $.01 being added to the game prices (for a nice round $60 rather than $59.99 woohoo) considering game budgets nowadays.
I got a big sexy black screen yesterday as I was installing this latest "critical update" to Vista. Upon a forced restart the computer worked fine, but I am almost certain the sudden black screen of nothingness was this new feature going bonkers.
If it happens again I'm calling MS to yell at them, and if it happens a 3rd time I'm going back to XP.
"Expecting commercials" on TV doesn't mean we wouldn't take the option to rid ourselves of them if we had it. (Which those that DVR TV do...) I find advertisements to be annoying anywhere they may be.
Very insightful and a very valid point to bring up. I too have noticed that an M-rated game is often less "objectionable" than many PG-13 movies. In other words, while M-rated games sell best, that does not mean it's necessarily due to violence/gore (let's face it, there's really no sexual themes in M-rated games to speak of).
'...remember downloading this game is only going to slimming [sic] the already slim chance of Manhunt 3 ever happening,' they tell fans."
Quick, download it! Download it as much as you can! The more we can slimming the chance of Manhunt 3 being developed the better.
These aren't exactly Legend of Zelda quality games we're talking about here...
It's a great point, and it further drives home the idea that these days music "quality" takes a back seat to music "quantity." Why even bother trying to find a better-compressed version of a song if you can spend half the effort to find 2 other songs altogether? This is especially true because of the reduced bitrate (to reduce file size) that online music is sold in, and because downloading online is at the same time quite convenient.
Patents this broad on software just shouldn't ever be granted, period. Effectively this patents inference, which is ridiculous. I'm also fairly certain that tech existed prior to 2000 which was capable of predictive i/o. Browser histories, etc.
If you have a PS3 you *probably* have a TV to play it on. If you have a TV you need a TV license just the same whether or not you have a DVR hooked up to it.
This sort of research is some of the most useful and cool that's out there. Bettering ourselves with technology makes perfect sense to me, and that includes our injured selves. As this tech progresses and matures and becomes more cost-effective, I look forward to seeing it replace the usual rigid prosthetic limbs that so many people sport nowadays. The more realistic, useful, and durable the better, and this festo research is definitely privileging those factors.
Actually, I have wanted a missile launcher button on far more occasions than I have wanted a car horn. See, when some moron almost runs you off the freeway by merging right onto your vehicle, and speeds away at 100 mph, a car horn just won't do. A missile on the other hand, will teach him a lesson he'll NEVER remember!
I wasn't basing my assessment of Germany on someone else defining it as "liberal." Rather, my personal experience. Also, you are confusing "liberal" with "Democrat" in the political party sense. There's nothing "liberal" about outlawing violence in the media; that's just not how the word is defined.
Elbow hits harder and hurts the hitter less. Unless you hold your fist at the right angle and connect well you're liable to damage your hand. Far too many people learn this the hard way. So, not so much "nerd fight" as, say, "muay thai" perhaps...:-P
Heh, on that note, given the average German high-schooler's attitude/approach to sex, they might as well *market* porn to minors for all it matters.
Maybe I was a bit too surprised when a close relative of mine in Germany first nonchalantly said something like "oh, here everyone's slept with everybody" w.r.t. her school... it's like, thanks but I didn't really need to hear it from you T_T
Am I saying they're OK in the US but bad in Germany? No... in fact much of my point was that Germany *is* socially progressive (in the sense you're talking about) -- more so that the US.
So, yeah I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, or why you assume there was something self-righteous about what I stated earlier.
"Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons"
As socially progressive/liberal as Germany is in many ways, the sheer fact that it has such an organization is astounding and disappointing to me. First of all, it sounds way too much like something only a "Totalitarian Regime"(tm) would have. Second, it's such a misappropriation of resources it's laughable.
It's true we just sit around the house, and I mean literally *around the house,* and have no-one to talk to, but that doesn't give you the right to make fun of our weight!
(Ok I had 1 hour of sleep and I don't know how many coffees. Please excuse!)
Oh man I played that game!! I kicked its arse! And yeah it was a Chex version of Doom. Sure, Doom II and Rise of the Triad were way more fun, but ChexQuest was way better than a cut-out King Vitaman mask.
Ok so that's how I first read it and since Slashdot has way too few random mentions of anime given how nerdy it's supposed to be I figured I'd throw one in here.
Oregon!? How about *OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY* which is like 10x better known than either of those schools. That's the OSU that nearly all of the US thinks of when they hear it.
Yeah Peach is a nightmare to play against if it's someone good using her. Heck, turnip spam alone is a pain in the arse if you're trying to make it back onto the platform, let alone her dsmash.
Yeah I'm not sure how well-equipped Samus is to take on Peach... I never used Samus much. I think the counterpick for Peach was Marth...

Yeah I agree it shouldn't be a felony. Of course to be fair it also shouldn't be a felony to deliver a swift elbow to a Holocaust denier's jaw. :3

"from the grammar nazis" not "form the grammar nazis" omg I will KILL you!
Hey whatever Sigel's gotta do...
Hey, who are you calling largely?!

I always thought it was "my wife for hire!" providing some insight into the Protoss social structure.

While you are indeed a prime example of what you describe, I don't think the issue is as widespread as you suggest.
