Amen to that. My first RTS was Command & Conquer Gold. I used to spend hours on a dial-up link against my buddy. With him as GDI and myself as NOD, the strong offense vs. strong defense games lasted forever..and I loved them!

My Mercedes has automatic lights, although I always turn them on early, because I like the look of the fog lights on w/ the driving lights (and fog lights will not go on in auto setting). And I always give a thank you wave. However, I drive the cheapest Mercedes they sell (2005 C230 Kompressor sedan - 4 cylinder), so the other Mercs tend to treat me like a bastard child.

How about the fact that I can get a base Jetta starting at $17,000 while the TDI starts at $22,000. I personally would not have the car long enough to justify the price increase. Even with a tax credit the price is still starts at over $3k higher.

My personal tastes don't want a 0-60 in 11 seconds either. Currently, I'm happy with my pre-owned C230 Kompressor Sedan (4-cyl supercharged). 32mpg highway. I average 27mpg on I-95 (New York/Connecticut) in traffic (I use the car's Comfort mode, which starts off in 2nd gear and shifts quicker). Decent power, all of the luxuries I like.

I got the car with 1.9% Financing over 3 years. I don't plan on having a car more than 3 - 4 years (And the car will hold it's value relatively well). I sure as hell can't afford a Bluetec benz yet either.

Functionality is definitely key. I bought a Microsoft Sidewinder Gaming mouse..a little over the top, and I don't do as much PC gaming as I used to (since I have a career now), but I'm a big fan of the mouse. It's not just the extra buttons that I like, but also the way you can tweak the mouse to feel most comfortable in your hand / in play. On the fly DPI settings is fantastic. Helps from going Assault to Sniper. Helps with Photoshop too. The mouse comes with different weights and replaceable feet to get the weight / glide exactly how you like it. Again, it's a little over the top, but it feels great to use once you get it right. $90 for a mouse that I use every single day. I consider it worth it IMHO. At work I just use a basic Microsoft Optical. I'm not paying for my own mouse at work.

Haha I feel your pain. It took me about a week of hovering around NY, NJ and CT trying to get a Wii. I finally got one store with a really chill guy who let me know what stores had already received shipments in the area. I eventually found it right near my home town, the same store I had started at in the morning when it first opened. It took me about a half hour to get back to that store and bought one of the last three at the customer service desk. The other two were sold to the two people behind me. I've had so much fun with the Wii and cannot wait to see what developers come up with to take advantage of the Wii-mote

"Anecdotally, I was at Best Buy yesterday and they were still out of Wii (got a shipment that day but sold out very quickly) but had 12 PS3."

I've seen the same situation around me in Best Buy's. I spent a week crossing between NY, CT and NJ to get a Wii. Eventually I started using the Palisade's mall as a "hub" and their Best Buy would tell me what stores had shipments come in that day. I got extremely lucky. I had started out the day in my local Best Buy at store opening when they had none. By the time I got to the Palisades I had found out they got a shipment of 18 and the store manager there said I didn't have a chance in hell. Well less than 30 minutes later I got the 2nd to last one. By the grace of God, most people had no idea that the Wii's were kept at customer service until they were almost sold out. It took me a trip to 2 other Best Buy's to get Zelda. I still haven't been able to find another Wii-mote at one. (By the way...I had a well financed Best Buy gift card as a result of christmas, which is why I hadn't tried other stores). They had PS3's...but the price tag for me is too high to gauge my interest (I'll stick w/ PC games)

A mini-rant on the entertainment factor of the Wii. Before getting Zelda I only had the included Wii-sports bundle. The graphics....N64 quality, but the gameplay inspires an amazing experience. Every single person who has played my console has expressed a legitimate desire for the product.

It is also the first electronic gaming system that my mother has ever played...And she almost kicked my ass in Wii tennis. Awesome.

Well, by looking at it from a different perspective it seems to be more justifiable to support this "lie" to your children. Mainly, the look on your child's face when he opens up a present to see exactly what he wanted. Christmas is a time of family and, for our children, we instill a sense of "magic" to put the children in a wonderous awe. Sure it's a lie, but it's a lie that, for most kids, makes them very very happy. Sure, I was sad when I found out that Santa didn't exist, but hey I got about 9 years of belief when I was younger. I remember trying to stay up all night with my brother to see if we could "catch" Santa and trying to figure the fat guy out. I know when I have kids that I will continue with the tradition. Who knows, maybe I'll even get my kid "An official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time" Plus, it keeps the kids in line for about a month for fear of coal :)

Or would you rather tell your 6 year old that we live in a cold, godless, harsh world where evil and greed runs wild...I'll stick w/ Santa for now. When they find out, they'll get over it.

Nintendo doesn't have to compete on the hardware level, which is what's giving them their advantage right now. Focusing on gameplay without spending all those hours on the bells and whistles allows for a simple, highly entertaining experience. I think that Nintendo did a great job at targeting their market. It feels as if the Playstations and Xbox'es are resembling home computers more and more. This is one of the reason's I am going to go Nintendo instead of the other two. I have my Oblivion and Battlefield 2 FPS games already. I don't feel like spending $600 just to play an FPS on a console (I admit that console games are more "trouble free" than PC games though)..I'd rather just buy the 360 controller and USB it into my computer if i wanted it. If I need "insane" graphics, I'll get another 7900GTX and SLI it when the time comes. Nintendo, however, is offering a unique experience and an emphasis on gameplay, which is something that has been lacking in a majority of the market (there are always exceptions..gears of war..final fantasy...

  20. Re:Kids these days... on School Admins Demand Access to Students' Cellphones · · Score: 1

I went to a private highschool which had a different cell-phone policy, but I think that it helps show the ambiguity behind a circumstance like this. In my highschool, you weren't allowed to have your cellphone on during school hours. If a dean noticed your status light flashing (and they did actually look), they would take your phone until your parents called the school and asked for it back. There really aren't any reasons, other than emergencies, for a child to have his phone on while in school; I mean, his friends are in the building with him. The only time I legitimately used a phone for an emergency was 9/11 when all the phone systems were tied up and Nextel's PTT crap still worked. Once..in the my lifetime of having a cellphone...did I need the use of a phone on in school. I think this is a much more reasonable approach to a situation like this. Teachers and other Faculty members should not have the ability to search someone's private data. With most kids being better with technology than their adult supervisors, it seems that this newly instituted rule will end up fading away due to it being highly impracticle and controversial. Kids who have a problem with this rule will put codes on their phones and their parents will get involved...And angry parents will join together. Instead, the school should follow the more practical method of simply requiring cell-phones to be off in school. Parent's can't argue when they're called up about their child violating this rule, as it is an extremely fair request on the school's behalf. There's no "searching" through cell phones and multiple offenses will mean the kid will have to deal with his parents when gets home. Hey, if it worked in the heart of the Bronx, it can work in Framingham.
