I went one better and use Codeweaver's Crossover on Linux on a large number of Department of Defence computers. The security problems of Windows (any version) will cause us to go bankrupt if we have to provide long term maintenance for it.
"Don't open dubious email" is bulldust. The email program should be secure. I can click on anything and everything with wild abandon and never have any trouble on both my Windows and Linux systems.
This is no different from running a cruise ship, except that it isn't cruising anywhere. The biggest problem is that it needs a reason d'etre, else it will go bust, just like any poor island nation.
Hmm, before calling a judge a fool, maybe you should read the law. Then you should carry on and read Plato's The Republic, Machiavelli's The Prince and Rosseau's The Social Contract. By then, you'll have some rough idea of what is going on here.
No, your argument doesn't hold. The packet of crisps is made by a single company so there is no tied selling involved. The PC and OS are made by different companies and the OS is marketed as a separate product, therefore forcing consumers to buy two separate products when they only wanted one, thus forcing them to dump one into a land fill, is tied selling.
There are no extra costs involved with shipping a blank HDD vs an imaged HDD.
One reason the EU is coming down hard on these cases is because MS has 1.5 billion dollars (and rising) of outstanding unpaid fines. If they drag their feet much longer, then the EU may bar them from trading there until the fine is paid.
The whole Mac is made by one company - Apple. So there is no 'tied selling' going on. Also, Apple is not a convicted monopolist, who abused their market dominance to eliminate the competition. Apple is an example of what little competition is left.
Manufacturers install Windows by cloning hard disks. It requires no extra effort to install a blank HDD. Also, they don't need an OS to test the system. That can be done using a USB memory stick, a CD, or netboot.
Hmm, I fell for the 'shortage of engineers' joke back in the 70s, ten years before you did. This must be the longest running joke in the history of mankind.
If there is a shortage, why have we had vast armies of out of work engineers knee deep in this shortage for the past 40 years?
Tied selling, whether applied to banks forcing you to buy insurance to get a loan, even when you are already insured, or to buying a PC with MS Windows pre-installed, is illegal in many jurisdictions. The MS EULA also says something to the effect that you can refuse to use it and get a refund. These lawsuits simply hold the sellers responsible for all their promises.
I certainly won't buy one like that. Even for free it would likely end up in the dumpster before long. Thre are so many low cost, nice new ones out there that buying an old one doesn't make sense.
The fact is that living in a totalitarian state can be very nice actually. A real totalitarian/fascist state has a very low crime rate, so you can walk about anywhere in perfect safety, your house doesn't get broken into when you go on holiday, your car radio doesn't get stolen when you park in a dark spot, women don't get raped...
Well, these figures come from the big names like IBM marketing. The mom and pop shops are not included but a million is a helluvahuge number, so mom and pops won't change it significantly.
Obviously they will be distributing powdered water. The main market is expected to be drought prone areas like Barcelona. Quite a concept really.
Simple solution really. That will instantly also take care of the **AA too. Nobody needs the spam coming from the USA anyway...

A train? Welcome to the 19th century. James Watt will be proud.

The procmail based email sanitizer has been around since some time before the dinosaurs: http://www.impsec.org/email-tools/procmail-security.html It detects known and unknown viruses.

What on earth is this going to be good for?

If you don't trust the machine, format and re-install it.
...and the ASCII Art codec...
OLPC got it wrong. Too bad.
Fair price at $3? Considering that the CD costs about 25p, that is still a markup of more than 1000%.
50p would be fair.
What did you connect it with - a rope?
All they need to do is reverse engineer the special control circuitry that China is already clandestinely embedding in all CPUs... ;)
I would not be surprised if these gizmos were made in China in the first place.
No, not Linux. BartPE is better for that.
