    Actually, Linux is the most widely used OS on the planet, with more than 2 billion devices running it (mostly cell phones and routers) and more than 300 million being manufactured every year. Microsoft Windows is the leader in a small market segment for desktop systems, but on the floor beneath each Windows machine, amongst the spiders and dust bunnies, you will find a tiny little Linux router box trying its best to keep the MS desktop system safe...

    This is clearly an ionospheric sounder, same as the numbers stations. These things are used during communications planning for a military exercise.

    In those days, the little town newspapers used boilerplate from the larger city newspapers and only added in a few local articles. So the fact that the meteor was reported in many newspapers means diddly squat.

    Those were the days of the steam driven internet on rails - news travelled a little slower, but it was no different in concept from today where lots of papers and blogs quote the same text.

    A few other countries, including the mean old USA, produce much more geothermal energy than Iceland. Iceland has very few people - only some 300,000 - about the size of a largish town anywhere else in the world.
