As the subject points out, I doubt whether they would consider it, as this would then validate Linux as a worthy competitor to windows. I am sure that they have the resources to do it, but they won't - until they are brought kicking and screaming into releasing programs for Linux by a giant customer who is moving ALL their desktops away from windows for whatever reason.
Please bear in mind that about a year ago, Micro$oft offered a plethora of Software to the schools for *FREE*. This was part of their schools project. The result is that schools were not interested in running alternate OS's, as they didn't have the price factor for software.
With this type of installation/solution, it addresses the issue of Hardware. Funds are needed for PC's, and the less you have to spend on hardware the better. This solution *DOES NOT* run Windows - period. So this is the type of footholding we in SA like to see. Once the kids leave school - Linux will be a comfortable OS for them to use - unlike people numbed by the MS "Experience" .
As long as they have a product that their rivals cannot compete with, they can keep the prices at a premium. Hence, until such time as Intel release a competitive product, AMD can enjoy high profit margins. This will change once Intel do release their competitive product though.
BTW: As was said in the article, the other arm of AMD's fabrication was also responsible for their profits ie: flash memory for cellphones. It's only because they have a majority stake in the joint venture with fujitsu, that they are able to declare the income as part of their overall turnover.
This to me is the biggest annoyance.. adverts DURING shows. I can understand that the Media companies have to make an income.. and that income is derived from advertising more than any other revenue source.
However, if the adverts were strategically aired, that would make a difference to the consumer. In South Africa, it started off as "adverts only between shows - and not on Sundays".. then moved on to "between shows.. 7 days a week" now of course it's all during shows, and there is nothing more irritating than a break during a show that you are just starting to enjoy. This makes me either walk out the room, change the channel, or mute the sound. All three ways - the advertiser loses.
But between a show.. well.. I might have a bit more patience..
I read a while ago about some of the SAMBA developers having a better grasp of how the services / protocol all tie together, than the M$ employees doing the development. Most of the current M$ team inherited code from the older versions of the OS, and they are merely building on top of this codebase. The SAMBA team have had to reverse engineer the protocol. So it seems to make sense therefore, that should you understand it better, you can sqeeze more out of the service on the whole. It therefore appears that it can only get better and better as they develop.. I also don't know how many developers are on the samba team in total (contributors / developers), but I would almost start assuming more than the manpower assigned by M$ to this area of code for Windows.. And with it being opensource, bugs are easier to find...
Does this not undermine a crackers "Trade Secrets" then ?? I am no cracker, but I have always been under the impression that if a cracker is going to get into a site, he is going to use his own methods (unless of course he is a script kiddie).. which means that he is not going to give away his secrets.. no matter how much (little) he will be paid..
Micro$oft is not going to simply say "Hey.. here is a free / opensource version of a comparable product to our office if you cannot afford it"
No, I think that they will keep there advertising campaign going and offering the likes of MS Works as the alternative to their more expensive package. And how many basic system users do you know of that have been following the development of OpenOffice ?? The average user walks into a computer store and says "I need a computer to type letters / send mail / basic calculations", and I can almost guarantee that the salesman will make an MS Office/Windows Sale. Maybe that is where projects like OpenOffice need to have "boxed" releases that the public can SEE the choice on the shelves.
Hmm.. perhaps in your country. In South Africa, this is basically the standard.. sure you have ISDN / ADSL.. BUT
ISDN - very expensive to start with (+- R2000-00 initial startup @ R 7.50 / $1) then you still pay for the call charges. If the config goes haywire you can end up with a bill of R 4000-00/month. ADSL is only available in certain areas - but there is a 3gig monthly cap. some guys can go through that in a day if they wanted to, and the service is being oversubscribed so quickly that the transfer rates are becoming dysmal. The only advantage is the 24x7 online connectivity (although they say that this is not guaranteed)
So most subscribers pay for 56k access (and we do pay for every local call made)
Maybe once the monopoly is broken (ie: SNO) there will be some sort of relief for the south african public..
When they refer to unpleasent body odor.. Just how bad is it I wonder. It could be "You smell funny", and by simply applying the correct amount of deo etc. you would be fine. Or is this "You smell like a skunk being run over by a fertilizer truck next to a wood pulp factory !!" In which case perhaps an extended stay indoors is the order of the day ??
Small Distributions - Has anyone tried MenuetOS ??
on
Windows 95 in 4.47MB

· Score: 4, Interesting
This little Distribution is actually quite amazing. It runs off a single 1.44 MB disk (Which happens in INCLUDE the source code). I know that they are improving the functionality.
Well at least PHP will offer the option of allowing you to use the session ID as a variable in the request/post string.. ie : page.php?PHPSESSID=xxxxxxxxxx So you can effectively track the user on the server side like this..
There are a lot of rules in South Africa concerning the ability to run a business from home, but I know of a lot of tele-commuters who work in the UK, but live in SA. Also, the cost of having a dedicated line at home (SA is one of the most expensive for line charges/ Internet charges) is cheaper than having a dial-up solution and an office.
If I were a customer I would far rather see better/quicker support than a fancy office..
Why do you have to have the initial install key ?? Microsoft can simply give Windows (XP/2003) away for free.. (Hey.. it's a 30 day window period) and when you want to "Activate", you then have to pay.
I would think that this type of litigation would spark soe sort of personal vendetta as well.. I reckon that IBM should first take them to court, WIN, watch the stock plummet as everyone tries to bail out of the sinking ship, and finally buy up whatever is left..
I remember a company by the Name of Siamese Systems in the UK..
Can't seem to connect to their original website (http://www.siamese.co.uk) but you can see:
>So there's no proof that you can't trisect an angle, or square a circle, or find integer solutions of x^n+y^n=z^n for n > 2
Fermet's Last Therom.. proved in the mid 90's..
x^n+y^n != z^n where n > 2

Is this not just a taste of things to come ?? .. then force them to use your product exclusively ??
.. but alarm bells should be sounding for other projects as M$ pull all their stuff closer to their chest ..
Lock users into your service
