  1. Definitley too early on High School Students Forced To Declare A Major · · Score: 2, Insightful

I highly agree with the college administrators on this one. Grade 9 is way to early to decide a career. High school is what exposes students wide range of subjects so that they can go from there. Honestly, how much does one learn about physics, chemistry, computer science, law, etc. in middle school? Certainly not enough to make a decision that will bind them to a particular field of study for the rest of their lives.

  4. Parental Intervention on Games Are No Cause For Murder · · Score: 2, Interesting

As much as I disagree with people blaming video games for violent actions in young people, it is plausible that exposing an 8 year old to violent video games and movies will have a violent influence. However, when a violent incident involving kids or teenagers occurs and people look to video games as the scapegoat, they neglect to consider that parental intervention is what really could have prevented something like that from happening. I think parents should be held accountable for something like that happening above all else.

  6. It's innovation baby. on Should Games Be More Boring? · · Score: 1

The reason games like Brain Age and a lot of Wii titles can be so simple, yet so successful is because they offer a completely new and original way to play video games. When video games first appeared on the market, the fact that they were a completely new form of entertainment is what sucked people in, and compared to what video games have become, these first games were quite 'boring'. I think, in time, we'll see a similar trend with these new games that are experimenting with motion sensitivity and the like. Eventually they will improve and branch off into completely new genres and the games that initiated this change will be regarded as primitive and 'boring'.

That said, Starcraft 2 would be incredible!

I'm simply trying to discuss the necessary, and interesting sub-features, that would have to be implemented to accomodate all users to make the game less awkward.

P.S. My Dad is left-handed. I am well aware of the inconvenience left-handed people face on a daily basis.

  10. Ambidextrous Link? on Zelda on the Wii To Include Sword Swinging · · Score: 5, Insightful

Has anyone ever noticed that Link is left-handed? I wonder if Nintendo is going to allow Link to hold the sword in either hand to match the players unidexterity? I'm not an experienced swordsmen by any means, but I think I would have a hard time playing a game that forced me to use my left hand for something like that since, like the majority of the population, I'm right handed. And I think it would be pretty awkward swinging my right arm and watching Link mirror my motion with his left.

The fact that we have tendency to kill other members of our own species through hatred is a major cause for wars and national conflicts (WWII is a good example). About 2 months ago I was in EB games purchasing Half-Life:Anthology, an M-rated game, and upon handing the game to the clerk I was asked for a piece of ID to ensure that I was at least 17 years of age. I was a little shocked at this because it was the first time I had ben IDed while purchasing a video game, however, I was actually glad that I got IDed because I know that if I got IDed, then they must be doing the same to a lot of people and effectively preventing "under-aged" kids from purchasing violent or sexualy explicit video games.

Being a 20-year-old, I had no problem with the purchase, but this actually came as a breath of fresh air for me to see someone actually taking steps to prevent kids from being exposed to explicit content and trying to releave the games industry of the constant, misdirected accusations that it has been getting over the pat few years.

  17. Re:$99 a year? on Microsoft To Enable User-Created Xbox 360 Games · · Score: 3, Insightful

$100 a year does seem a little steep for this service at first glance, and correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it cost big bucks (like hundreds of thousands of dollars) for professional studios to get a liscence to develop games for consoles? The advantage for them is that their games are guaranteed to get published, but if this service allows students and independant developers to get their games out there in the Xbox 360 commmunity and if these developers are allowed to keep the rights to their products, then I think it is an excellent way for aspiring developers to get started in the industry, whether they get picked up by existing studios or start their own.

This could be a giant step for the game industry. Kudos to Microsoft.

  19. Development Time on Piracy Killing PC Gaming? · · Score: 1

The abundance of sequels we have been seeing in the game industry is, indeed, an ugly site in video stores. And I think this can be accreditted to the fact that developing a new game from scratch takes so much longer than it used to (3yrs plus, easy). Thats a LONG time for one game. This forces compnaies to reuse the same game engines, animations, etc. in subsequent releases making for very similar titles that don't have a lot new to offer in order to release games faster.

10 yrs ago it was easy (compared to today) to come up with a new idea and build it up from scratch in a small amount of time. But when a game can take up to 5 years to produce, I don't blame developers for wanting to reuse the same content and tools for sequels if it means their game can spend 12 months in development rather than 60.

  20. Bad classics are ignored on Don't Go Down Memory Lane? · · Score: 1

When people talk how much better older games are to new ones, they tend to only pick out the best games from a previous generation, and the average to worser games of the current generation. Obviously, there are a lot of games out there today that can't live up to great classics(personally I don't think any new mario game can live up to Super Mario World), but when you look the average platformer game back in ,say, the NES days (average meaning anything thats not the Mario Bros. series) they're not as good as the average platformer would be today. I wish I could remember what some of these older games were called, but I distictly remember them being incredibly slow, unintuitive, and lacked a sense of momentum. Something that the average platformer today would have. And taking a look at the racing genre, I think its safe to say that GT4 is better than Rad Racer.

  21. Shooting ourselves in the foot on Don't Go Down Memory Lane? · · Score: 3, Insightful
Are we shooting ourselves in the foot by staying obsessed with the old classics?
Yes. I think people have too much of a tendency to look back at a game as being better than it really was and better as it gets older. When they hear of a new sequel in the works for an old series they're in love with, they expect it to be as much (if not more) fun than previous games, however, they expect the gameplay, setting, and monsters to be the same as the old game while, at the same time, they expect the new version to be fantastically different, addictive, and genre-breaking.

Truth is, newer installments of classic games can be as good as ever, but they will never live up to the memories that gamers have developped for their classic, personal favorites.

  23. The pirating will continue on Warner to Sell Music on DVD · · Score: 1

I really don't see how this will prevent people from stealing music. People have been downloading DVD rips of movies for years so what's to stop them from downloading DVD rips of music albums?

That said, I suppose it will stop a number of people from ripping music directly to the their HDs, but if they're going to a new media for this purpose as well as for more storage, why don't they go with those mini CDs that are used for GC games? They're are a much smaller media and can store a few gigs of info. This way manufacturers could start producing portable audio players for this media that are much smaller and easy to carry than the current CD walkmen and the inevitable DVD players that would come with this "revolution".

  24. Exclusive Games on The Winning Next-Gen Console Is The Most Diverse? · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you look at the games that are creating the most buzz for the Nintendo Wii right now, they are all games that make creative use of the new innovative controller (the Wiimote and Nunchuku combination). All or at least most of these games are going to be exclusive to the Nintendo Wii due to the unique control scheme and, from what I've heard, this time around Nintendo has a lot more third party support than with the GC. So it sounds like the Nintendo Wii is going to have a ton of exclusive, innovative titles with a completely new style of gameplay as well as much of the third party support that the Sony and Microsoft have. And lets not forget about the virtual console... I never thought they could bounce back, but I think Nintendo is going to take this one. (The console war, that is)
