It looks like I misunderstood the OP. I thought he meant forcing the other guy to block not going solely for the weapon without endangering the other person. I agree that it doesn't make any sense to go for the weapon only because one would just move it out of the way and counterstrike.

    Thank you for the clarification.

Welcome to the real world: words change meanings continuously. "Thing" once meant a council meeting (waay back in the norse times), now it mean, well, "thing". "Gay" once meant cheerful/happy, then it meant "homosexual", and now it's in the middle of becoming just "uncool". Etc.

Are you sure about the etymology of the word thing? Ting is a word in both Norwegian and Swedish. In Swedish it means at least two different things. It either means ting as in council (very archaic) and ting as in thing which is slightly archaic. I'm not sure if the Norwegians have a second meaning but ting as in council still applies to this day.

The only reason I can think of for not enabling games to be swapped between accounts is the cost. There is bound to be a lot of frauds that will eat up customer service hours. I haven't heard anyone getting banned for buying an account from someone and using it. The bad thing is you have to buy games on different accounts if you plan to sell them one by one.

I quite like Steam and would consider it the best online distribution system for noobs. The best one is of course pirated FTP's or Torrent's. I've only ever managed to use about half my download bandwidth (400KB) and that was just recently. It's usually slower than that but you can back up your steam account easily if that's a problem.

The thing is that most users can't be assed to install codecs as you are probably aware. This of course means that there is less incentive for companies to look into the issue. The thing is that games are the one place where Vorbis has really broken through. I've seen many games which use the Vorbis format for sounds instead of MP3 for obvious reasons. I first heard of Vorbis through the game Operation Flashpoint when I wanted to mess around with the sound and it came in a weird format.

When the market isn't hampered by install base the best solution will be used. Besides most of the closed format that has become de facto standard reached that status through not enforcing the patents until they became popular. Also I wouldn't call any market which relies on patents free but then again I'm a minority even amongst libertarians.

I know of at least two different sites which give out disposable e-mail addresses so I don't really understand why this is newsworthy.

    http://www.spamgourmet.com/
You create an account and spamgourmet will bounce the mail to you. The syntax is: [word].[number of mails].[username]@spamgourmet.com. When the alloted number of e-mails has been used the mails will bounce unless you allow more through.

    http://www.mailinator.com/
You just make up a string of letters and use those letters to view the account at mailinator. This is a truly disposable mail address since the inbox is open to anyone who chooses to look at the account. If the information is semiimportant you should choose a pretty random mail address.

'Strange measures of well being like standard of living' happen to be the norm for measuring how well things work out for people for the simple reason that it compensates for 'buying power', whereas GDP per capita does not. Not compensating for this means that you are not measuring what people can afford on their local market.
