As someone has mentioned, the article isnt about product placement in games, but a whole game who's focus is selling a product. Hasnt this been done in a way in America's Army? It is not to promote a product, but to promote recruiting, but same idea. I am not sure how many people have joined the army because of this game, but i do know a lot of people who play. So their message is getting to the target audience.

Also, take a hint in the fact that this game is free. If i am going to play games, they might as well be free.

I dunno if its been covered or not, I throw my modest karma at your mercy, BUT:

Microsoft has released their WinXP MCE doing all the stuff that the artcle talks about wanting to do, and it supposedly outdoes any free option out there. Unfortunatly it only works with a couple video cards, and still uses a lot of cpu power to do what it does. Despite this, Anandtech thinks that the interface is nice and polished and does quite well. I guess the major downside is that you cant actually buy it, you have to buy a computer loaded with it from the start. nngh

Oh well, take a look at that anandtech article and make your own judgements.

  4. You know, its funny... on GTA and Rating of Video Games · · Score: 1

For me, I find violent video games do the opposite of enticing me to commit a violent act.
For example: I've had a rough day at work, my boss is yelling at me and riding me all day. If I'm pretty pissed off at the end of the day, coming home to play some q3a or counter-strike and killing a few dozen people really takes the edge off.
So in a way, those kind of games sate my appetite for violence.
NO it doesnt mean if I dind't play video games I'd go blow someone's head off, but it sure does relax and help distract me.

    Better?
Depends what you mean by better.
If disk space is important to you, dolby digital is better. It has a fixed compression ratio regardless of the audio signal.
DTS' compression ratio varies to increase signal quality. Depending on how much bandwidth DTV gets, this might be important. For dvds you might notice that just about any dvd with a DTS track lacks in special features and extra audio. There just isnt the space for it.

And DTS wasnt specifically locked out. Everyone was in the way that: Dolby is now the audio standard for dvds, so there has to be a DD track on there. Doesnt mean there cant be other tracks.

  18. Re:Resolution on "Red is Dead" Optical Mice LED Change · · Score: 1

Actually, this isnt really true. The CCD sensor that takes the snapshots of the tabletop responds better at to light at certain frequencies.
I found a graph of responsivity vs wavelength for a standard ccd(made by Agilent, which almost all optical mice sensors are AFAIK.)It isnt my graph, I just found it on a mod page.

    You can see it here.

As you can see, the CCD responds better to red than blue.
Also, contrast is important to sense the differences between shots. This is done by angling the light from the LED as close to parallel to the surface as possible, done in my mouse with(This is called 'dark field illumination')
Basically use a good bright blue LED, make sure it desnt drop more than your mouse can source, (usually 5v) and you should be fine.

Yeah I did this mod myself, but I realized one problem. The bottom of my intellimouse explorer is translucent red plastic. That means it filters out everything but red. Since a blue LED makes almost perfect blue light, not just blue filtered white light, it almost doesnt shine through the plastic at all. I certainly dont have a glowing blue mouse bottom. Keep that in mind if you dont have clear mouse bottom plastic.
