    One of the best approaches to fighting vandalism, especially graffiti is to keep painting over it. We have a building in NYC. Years ago it was constantly defaced with graffiti and the overall paint on the building looked a bit shabby. We had it painted but within a week the graffiti was back and it built up over the next few months. We called the painter who gave us the number of a graffiti removal service. For a monthly fee they would add us to a route and drive by once a week. If they spotted graffiti they would pull over and paint over it using the same color as our building or pressure wash it off.

    After a few months of constant painting it began to taper off. After a year it virtually stopped and we didn't need the service any more. Now we keep our own paint and maybe once or twice a year we have to cover up some scribble.

    Constantly covering up the scribbles deters the vandals as it takes away the "power" they feel by marking a piece of property.

Once a mouse was glued to a tabletop after an acetone spill. I used a hammer and cold chisel the remove it gently, sanded the bottom lightly on a belt sander and it was good to go. And the shop has plenty of electrical noise from electron beam welders and pulsed Nd:YAG lasers, never have they failed to operate.

    My brother and I used the MS Intellimouse Optical for gaming before better mice came out for gaming. Perfect mouse for FPS's in its day as it had a button on each side so you could assign things like reload and alternate firing modes. That was around the time of Quake 2/3, Half Life/Team Fortress/Counter Strike and Unreal Tournament. Before that we had an Intellimouse Pro and were always cleaning out mouse cheese from the god damn rollers. both were very hearty mice and were slammed quite a bit during rages.

    I bet most of the problem lies in the fact that the developers of these tools are hopelessly addicted to .net and Visual Studio. These tools are probably written in C# and are closely tied to complex GUI's that have hundreds of elements based on Windows Forms or WPF. If you tell them they have to switch to a new GUI toolkit for cross platform, abandon Visual Studio and have to change a lot of the code to be more *nix friendly, they will vomit blood.

    If they wanted to be cross platform from the start they would have used a more cross platform friendly language, GUI toolkits and ditch the whole IDE workflow for one using build scripts and a syntax aware text editor (IDE's suck).

    When I say the following, believe me I am not bashing anyone, just pointing out a fact: Microsoft's tools make programmers lazy. Install Visual Studio, create a new project and you're off to building a program and everything is a click away.

    The x86 external FPU started with the Intel 8087 which was launched during 1980. The 8087 was the FPU for the 8086, the first generation of x86. The 80286 followed the same logic using an external FPU, 80287.

    The 386 was the first to integrate the FPU onto the CPU die in the DX line of 386's. The 386SX was a 386 without the FPU which depending on the computer/motherboard could be upgraded with a 387 coprocessor.

    So:
    386DX = 386+FPU
    386SX = 386, no FPU

    The 486 also followed the same logic offering a DX or SX version. There was an i487 FPU upgrade but it was a DX that simply disabled the 486SX and took over the CPU bus.

    The Pentium was the first x86 CPU to include the FPU by default.

    It sounds like he might be running a PC based CNC system that uses a PC for control. You posted a DNC box that is for uploading programs via DNC which has always been serial. Some older PC based CNC controllers used the parallel port (especially common for stepper systems). Systems that used brushless servos typically used some type of dedicated hardware to close the servo loop and is commanded via the PC. Typically those were ISA cards with a DSP on board but also parallel based units were available.

    I also support the PC based CNC systems at my place of work. The system is quite advanced and uses a real time subsystem which only supports Windows 2000/XP. One of the systems is XP and the others are Windows 2000. New software costs about 4k and depending on the drives used, may require new drives at a cost of $1700 per axis. We still have one DOS based CNC system left, an ISA/DSP card with proprietary vendor written software supported by one guy on planet earth. Since that system sees little use it is not worth to $30k+ to upgrade to a modern CNC system. And that price is just to keep the existing motors and stages, $60+k for a complete replacement.

Now since I am not a linguist, save might not be used the same way in each language so this isn't very accurate. But if you look, some languages have more than four characters, and as many as 11 or so. So your UI elements would have to resize which may interfere with the layout and cause overlap or other problems.

    A universal symbol that means save would be much better and so far the floppy disk is that symbol. But the new generation of kids don't even know what a floppy is. So you run into that problem. A new universal symbol that won't become outdated is needed.
