I realize this is comparing apples and oranges, but going on pure GHz, the eee Atom units are more than twice as powerful as my 667 P3 laptop (which is currently my workhorse) at less than half the original cost. If the performance of the eeePC lags behind the P3, I'm going to be a little disappointed.

However, I see your point and agree that the eee units are a bit overpriced for the hardware involved. But I'm going to justify my purchase based on my love affair with ASUS. I've never had a serious problem with their motherboards and I'm hoping that these computers are equally solid. Again, not really based on good judgment, but I do believe I mentioned I have unrealistic emotional expectations.

I hope they aren't hard to find in the coming months. I have no need for some ridiculous contract.

I was going to chime in along those lines as well. This is hardly news. When the weather is ideal at departure and destination, I usually tell my pax they don't have to turn their phones off. When the weather is bad and I'm going to be shooting the ILS to minimums, the last thing I want to hear is seven or eight phones ticking in my headset from the initial approach fix to the DA.

Some phones seem to be worse than others and it sounds like the iPhone may validate the FAA's position on cell phones.

Damn. Something must be wrong with me then, my laptop is nearly eight years old and I've only had two problems with it.

First, I've had to replace the hard drive. Not because the first one failed, but because it was too small. I needed more room to dual-boot. I'm using Linux more. And second, the built-in audio is fouled up. I don't know what it is, but all I hear is static from the speakers and headphones. Fortunately, I don't do anything but work on this computer, so I don't need any special a/v capabilities. I just plug in a pair of headphones and I don't hear the noise anymore. And I paid $995 for this machine. There's no way I'm going to shell out close to $2000 for a laptop. Not on your life. I'm actually considering one of the netbooks out there with the primary selling points being the price and availability of Linux.

  12. Re:Four page article? on FAA's Aging Flight-Plan System Having Problems · · Score: 1

The article says that the FAA's air traffic control system is broken and needs a bunch of help, but the article doesn't give any real suggestions. I'll give mine.

    1) Give pilots in-flight radar.

It's already here, but the term "radar" is too loose to be accurate. The system is called ADS-B. Also, the FAA has been trying to mandate it, but getting people to foot the bill (these systems cost an inhuman amount of money) is the problem--I suspect (like what RVSM did) many planes will be mothballed if ADS-B is ever mandated on short notice. The new system still uses beacons (transponders) similar to the current system, but what ADS-B does is it is capable of "talking" with other aircraft near yours AND participating in the ATC radiobeacon system. I am not aware of any private operator using ADS-B in the lower 48 due to cost. UPS was (maybe still is) pushing it hard not too long ago, but it's been quiet as of late.

    2) Create new ATC system to make sure pilots follow flight plan

You should see what's in the modern towers today. It's not as clunky as people want to believe. Call up your local tower and ask to visit. Last I checked, they still to tours at some of those places.

    4) Lose money (cause you're an airline)

That's a basic tenet of airline operation, and a fundamental law of aviation.

One of my favorite lines (paraphrased) is, "If you want to make a little money in aviation, start with a lot."

    Mine does. Sorta.

In the U.S., my screen says "AT&T" when I view the main screen. Shortly after passing into Canada, the same area says, "Rogers Wireless".

So, while not a text per se, it is an "or something" that let's me know I'm not in Kansas anymore.

You're only paying 2x as much? Sounds like a good deal. We had a Learjet a couple years ago that had a bad EL panel. Nothing fancy, just an EL panel with a handful of switches for radios. When the panel was previously replaced (about 4 years ago) it cost about $300. Two years ago, when we had to replace it again, it cost over $1200. A 4x markup in two years! Same P/N, and since there is no such thing as *new* for planes this old, it was also refurbished/remanufactured/rebuilt, however you want to look at it. I definitely blame the FAA and Insurance for the insane costs that we are seeing today.

"...TSA inspectors in the name of public safety by climbing up onto the aircraft, on these very sensitive pitot tubes."

Were these Rosemount styled pitot tubes by any chance? The costs for those things can be jaw-shattering. We had a lineman bend one on a jet right after it came back from RVSM installation and certification. He was trying to tug the plane with his car because the company's tug was broken down. He no longer works there.

I paid $95 for a MotoRAZR V3xx a few years ago when it was new. Yeah, it came with a 24 mo. contract. My wife got a new phone (Nokia), but not the latest and greatest, at the same time for $50. We both had rebates and hers basically worked to be free. We're on the same contract. We share minutes and never pay usage charges for overage (unless I'm out of the country--my employer reimburses those calls thankfully!) My bill is steady at $70 a month, and I have more rollover minutes than I know what to do with. Oh yeah, many cell providers (in the U.S. at least) will give discounts to government employees and credit union members. Sometimes the savings can cover the cost of the next better plan.

The one thing I'd like to see, however, is my monthly rate go down when my term elapses and I go month-to-month. But I doubt that will ever happen.

As far as Michigan goes (I can't speak for Florida), she essentially ran unopposed here. Obama was not on the ballot (I know that's no news). I'm not a huge fan of Obama, but I have to say that he probably did the more honorable thing by taking his name off the ballot. And so far, the DNC (or whoever is in charge) has held up their end of the bargain by not allowing Michigan to send delegates.
