The *only* entity outlawed from restricting free speech is the government.
By no means do those laws apply to public or private businesses, citizens, or households.
While it may be censorship, it is not illegal for Wal-Mart, or any other person, company, or organization that is not affiliated with the Gov to censor whatever they please.
How on Earth would this help anyone decide who to vote for (ya know, the *point* of this whole charade)?
We should be talking about IP, Government regulation, welfare, healthcare, immigration, the list goes on and on, towards the very bottom of which we *might* find evolution.
How is a screenshot of his shared files (available to anyone on kazaa) anything *but* public information not subject to search & seizure laws?
People can browse the shares of others all day on this service. It's public information on a public network. Nothing here required a warrant.
The content shared was more than enough cause to allow the copyright holder to request identifying information from the ISP (this may have required a warrant, IANAL).
Sure, if it was a kid or a dead grandma, we'd all have every right to be pissed off, but it wasn't some innocent bystander this time.
Yeah. We all know Mr. C. didn't play that game. No sir. No commutations for him. Just straight pardons of convicted felons. But it's not like anyone was actually paying attention, right?
Instead of a military conflict in Iran, let's let them nuke Israel, killing thousands upon thousands (and that's before the radiation sets in for the next generation or so on the poor bastards who didn't die in the blasts), and *then* go in and wipe out Iran. Two birds with one stone and of course, it wasn't *our* fault, we just reacted appropriately.
That's only part of the issue. If all you have to do is click Cancel or Allow, then anyone else could ineptly or maliciously Allow some malware to wreak havoc on your system while you're down the hall getting a cup of coffee.
So they should ask 3 times? Or not ask at all? And how in god's name does Linux prevent this when, instead of hitting, "Allow", they type in their four letter password?
It's not too often intelligent posts make their way here.
the key here is that The search function is and has been part of the windows OS for quite some time now. This is simply an extension of existing OS infrastructure.
Google whining about not being able to replace it is like unto folks demanding Microsoft make it easy to swap out the filesystem, or kernel, or shell. (All while guaranteeing system stability, of course)
It's ridiculous, and Google should be reprimanded.
I am a big supporter of both MS and Google. Google is losing serious ground on this one.
As for Internet Explorer... Netscape had it coming.;) It was just a question of which browser. IE would have put out it's dying embers even were it not bundled....but that's a discussion for another thread.:p
People are idiots. They believe whatever the media tells them and flat out refuse to both get the facts and form their own views, or look at the bigger picture. They take the media soundbites and run with them.
Sorry, but I don't think *anyone* wants a country run by the US media. One would think the most vehemently against such a thing would be...the US.
...and people think Microsoft's naming conventions are silly. How can anyone expect people to take Linux seriously when they don't even take themselves seriously?
Okay, you can call me an MS fanboy and bury this post now.
Actually, copyright infringement is a god given right. There's nothing in the ten commandments about not duplicating work. It does say thou shalt not steal, but stealing refers to depriving someone else of the item you've stolen, which isn't the case when producing a duplicate.
I really want to see you point out where that right is granted. Sure, it doesn't specifically mention that it is not allowed (if you go by the tired fantasy that IP theft doesn't equal *actual* stealing), but if we go that route, then I suppose God wants me to maim babies all day, too.
You sir, are a moron. Please remove yourself from our gene pool.
A. For the most part, you are correct. B. Dell uses the same logic board in every product in a product line (GX280, GX520..). Since audio, graphics, and network are on-board, you get the same parts with each unit.
The US has already turned 3 of the 18 provinces of Iraq to total Iraqi control. We fully expect to have most of the rest turned over by the end of the year.
I love hearing from the folks who think the goal in Iraq is stability. When was the last time any country in that region was "stable"? They've been at war, or at the very least, forced peace on fear of annihilation for over 1400 years. Anyone who thinks the goal is stability did not pay attention in their History classes. So long as there are Palestines vs Jews, and Shia vs. Sunni, there will be conflict and instability in the Middle East. Period. Full Stop. End of Story.
I actually agree with you on the false pretenses. WMD's were a poor justification. Saddam himself and the simple fact that folks like him don't go away, they get worse, would have been more than enough.
Our goals entering Iraq were to find and remove any supposed WMDs (done, since they likely weren't there to begin with) and depose Saddam, replacing his regime with a democratic government. How have we *not* won, or at the very least, come very close at this point to it?
The site is down for maintenance. Perhaps someone should hit Demonoids IRC before posting fantastical stories of it's demise..
But where would all the hits go then....?
Anything for a headline...even if it's BS.
He does. But he himself has stated it is only out of respect and that he doesn't *have* to.
Just an FYI:
1.) This has nothing to do with formats
2.) This case was brought against MS in 2000.
3.) It is now 2007.
Try some perspective. I hear it goes well with your morning coffee.
This case was brought against MS in 2000. It is now 2007.
So much for the right to a speedy trial.
So much for relevance.

The screenshot was a grab from another computer simply examining the shared files he had available.
Public information.
No warrant needed.

Good God! You're a friggin' Genius!

Excellent plan!
But will the people fall for it?
So they should ask 3 times? Or not ask at all? And how in god's name does Linux prevent this when, instead of hitting, "Allow", they type in their four letter password?
PODcast.
Portable On Demand broadcast.
Man, you slashdot lizards should really know this stuff. It was around *long* before the iPod.
Yes, of course. MS should allow us, no *must* allow us to modularly swap out any portion of it's OS for that of a competing product, right?
I mean, why stop at indexing? Why not force them to let us swap out the shell? Or the filesystem? Or the Kernel, FFS??
Sorry. Search is part of the filesystem. Any modern OS that does not allow you to quickly and easily search your files is seriously lacking.
If Google doesn't want to use Microsoft's indexing service, great. Their problem, not Microsoft's.
cheers, sir.
;) It was just a question of which browser. IE would have put out it's dying embers even were it not bundled. ...but that's a discussion for another thread. :p
You made my day.

You mean using a network protocol that is not compatible with existing equipment and infrastructure might actually cause problems???
/sarcasm
*GASP*
OH! The Horror!!!
You shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer.
Get.
A.
Clue.
That in no way diminishes the point.
Most folks buy crap hardware. Why? It's cheap and it (usually) does the job.
What this means is that most of the hardware folks buy isn't going to be "good enough" for the Mac.
Just one more reason the platform is seen by the general public as one for the elitist folk and *not* the average user.
People are idiots. They believe whatever the media tells them and flat out refuse to both get the facts and form their own views, or look at the bigger picture. They take the media soundbites and run with them.

But then again...people are idiots.
Okay, you can call me an MS fanboy and bury this post now.
Hey, do these tights make my butt look fat?
ROFLMAO... This *is* slashdot. Unused "Things" abound.
The market fo rthe Zune is primarily Windows. OSX compatibility is low priority for Microsoft.
The primary market for iTunes is also Windows. You'd think it'd be a pretty high priority for Apple.
Do you see?
Our subtle plan is unfolding exactly as predicted, Baldrick.
You see, we join forces with the one who's done the most for the community, the community shuns them, and everything falls to pieces.
This, Baldrick, is how we will destroy Linux once and for all. By offering them the interoperability they've always demanded.
Muahahahahhahaa......
lmao..
