I agree with you. I've been using Ubuntu 8.10 and now 9.04 lately on my notebook (Thinkpad T61, 1.8ghz C2D, 4gb ram, Intel 965 gfx), I upgraded to the 9.04 repo sources in the hopes the crappy Intel xorg drivers would be fixed, but alas.

I find Firefox, with some flash, scrolling or resizing just completely slows my machine down, with XP and Vista this was much faster. I also tried Opera, which uses the QT engine IIRC, faster, but still irritating.

Other things that just annoy me about Gnome are the panels, there seems to be no way to do basic things like keeping the bars under windows, they seem to only exist in 'always on top' mode unless autohide is enabled, which I don't want. Even switching to a lower resolution will result in my applets randomly relocating themselves, even if the lower res is more than the length of my panel + applets.

I want to use Linux on my Thinkpad, I am starting to seriously love Gnome now, but the hardware / performance of Xorg just plain suck for me.

  7. Re:Jesus saves, but Buddha makes incremental backu on Long-Term Personal Data Storage? · · Score: 1

True. I only backup the stuff that is very important to me, my /home is about 16GB or so, so that's an easy thing to manage, various other things, (like ISOs and stuff I keep handy) i have on multiple machines anyway, those can be re-created from the source media, so those aren't an issue. Media I don't backup since it's a) too big, b) too much effort to do so and c) I don't really care, because it can easily be acquired again.

Personally I'm longing for the day when 64GB flash disks are at the price 4GB ones are currently, because having 3 of those (1 off site) would be a huge benefit to me.

Oh and, don't forget to use tools like Gmail drive, you can upload your stuff there, and if I recall you can store up to about 6-7GB on a gmail account nowdays, plus it's free.

  9. Jesus saves, but Buddha makes incremental backups. on Long-Term Personal Data Storage? · · Score: 2, Informative

But seriously, I've had the same (but growing) data set in my /home for over 15 years, and going. I find the easiest way is to just keep it on my drive, and have a few frequently updated copies on external media (optical or solid or dirve) and to keep it on another PC too, disk space is so goddamn cheap. I also have a large music collection, and instead of wasting time backing it up onto optical media, I just keep it on both my notebook and PC, its unlikely both will fail at the same time, and incase of a robbery, I can also archive it at work.

Don't expect any form of media to last forever, it's multiple, frequently updated copies that will ensure your data lasts forever.

Also, if you have friends and family you can trust, make a copy for them to keep for you, off-site backup is also important.

Obviously this all depends on how important and/or private the data is.

I bought Spore, my wife wants to play it too. So we installed it on her PC, but she can't play online too, she'd have to play on my account - which is fine and all but I really feel upset that with Spore and the other games (like Quakewars ET)

Buying 2 copies of the game so we can both play online is a bit much. I'd gladly pay an extra 1/3 of the cost of another copy.

  13. Well, it *IS* a cult. on UK Teen Cited For Calling Scientology a "Cult" · · Score: 1

If I turn to my Wikipedian Textbook of ye Olde knowledge, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult

It clearly says "Cult typically refers to a cohesive social group devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture considers outside the mainstream, with a notably positive or negative popular perception. In common or populist usage, "cult" has a positive connotation for groups of art, music, writing, fiction, and fashion devotees,[1] but a negative connotation for new religious, extreme political, questionable therapeutic, and pyramidal business groups.[2] For this reason, most, if not all, non-fan groups that are called cults reject this label."

And, yes - I don't agree with Scientology *AT ALL*, and by the definition above and in my dictionary, I'm leaning towards the notion that above mentioned kid should have been given a medal, or at least a pat on the back for pointing out the obvious.
