I think the situation in Monterey has changed.. My little bubba lives in Salinas and I think he gets ABC now, allowing him to drop his cable service. Hm. It may be the LA version of ABC, though.
I, for one, feel that I should be able to subscribe to any set of "local" channels that I want. In my case, Washington DC's lineup. Nothing but cost prevents me from subscribing to the New York Times or the Washington Post, so why can't I get my DC TV? It's all part of the free market. If I find my local stations parochial but still want the network coverage, I should be able to pick and choose.
They're called "commercials". Revolt. Watch either premium channels [HBO] only or pre-recorded shows on the PVR of your choice. Don't respond to ads. Don't buy anything but non-preprocessed food, gas and other necessities.
This sounds familiar to the situation where the owners of KRON [tv] in San Francisco wanted them to air a station of theirs from LA, and withheld broadcast rights to KRON until they caved.
We did without NBC for six months, Charlie [Dish] never caved. NBC moved itself to a San Jose station and we get NBC again.
Viacom probably wants Dish to carry additional channels or drop competing channels from their line-up.
The Newton faithful http://www.newtontalk.net are still using their "obsolete" machines. I'm not switching until I can get HWR that's just as good [and it's damn good].
I've got a watch that does this. Mickey's hands move with the passage of time - the big hand sweeps in a circle over the course of an hour. The little hand goes around the circle twice a day. It's great at letting me know about what time it is! Only $299, postpaid.
Euro versus American? Coke versus Pepsi? Got me. I've used both and they both give good results. I think what's more important is what happened to the coffee after it comes out of the filter. Anything but your cup or a thermal carafe is going to fuck up the flavor by applying extra heat to it.
I think that Starbucks gets a bum rap (aside from being a corporate giant) because you end up drinking it through a sippy-lid most of the time. This leaves you with just the mouth-flavor and none of the nose of the coffee.
Water is key, I have to agree. I have a distiller at home and use the water from that.
The other key is consistency - if you always buy the same kind of (beans, roast, brand) and always use the same amount of water and grounds, you will get consistent coffee every time. For an eight-"cup" coffeemaker, I use 7 flat coffee measures of coffee, and make sure that there are no hard chunks of compressed grounds.
My coffemaker is programmable [fresh coffee at 6am rocks] and drips straight into a thermal carafe - no burnt first drips, and the coffee stays hot most of the day if it lasts that long.
Me? I'm a (Kenya,Kona,Kauaii) (Viennese,Italian) and Peets http://www.peets.com kind of guy. I get my beans ground when I buy them because it's difficult to get consistently results with the typical home chopper. Coffee lives in the freezer, of course.
Peets has exceptional coffees and go for a dark and flavorful roast. When I want Kona, I have it sent in from http://bongbrothers.com as they produce consistently good coffee.
"standing around for a long time, not paying attention"
I usually call that "fucking off". Our cousins on the other side of the pond call it "trainspotting". I suppose my Grandmother would call it "wool-gathering", if pressed.
1. Buy the integrated PVR - that way you skip a D->A step, as they record the digital signal off of the bird.
2. Getting satellite TV is like getting a new tv, in terms of picture quality over cable. I kid you not. I thought my TV was going to crap. No, it was the local cable plant and all the junk cable in my attic.
3. NASA Select. Live coverage of shuttle launches and landings [R.I.P. Columbia, Challenger], something you don't get with Discovery Wings
4. Discovery Wings - 24/7 jet noise programming.
5. A kajillion versions of HBO/SHO/TMC/etc., both east coast and west coast feeds.
It's on-purpose because it really spells "MATIE", arrrrrrrr arrrrrrr.
The Finns decided more than a decade ago that the Lingua Franca of Computer Science was English.

You're wrong. Dish isn't affiliated with DirecTV. They tendered an offer for them but the Feds 86'ed the deal.

WHAT?!?
Four gallons.
Women still have a choice. Men don't. That's why we have "Take Our Daughters To Work Day".
Where's the marketing tie-in with the Mini [Cooper]? Buy a Mini, get a Mini.

Fat chance.
I say that as a Newton lover/user.
You want to read this book by P. K. Dick.
Next time I'll keep my eye on it.

Basket machines are better because you'll always have a supply of cheap throw-away parts holders, snack holders, what have you.
Plus, they make great party hats, or with a pair of bobby pins, emergency yalmukes.

If I were Captain, I'd set the fscking food processors to serve up "tea" the way I like it, and skip the "Earl Grey, hot" hoo-ha.
Actually, coffee is good for you. Drasticly reduces your chances of getting diabetes, Parkinson's and colon cancer.

Hard-of-hearing, yes.
Mute, hardly.
Drug-addict felon, definitely.
