Well, I hate to piss on your bonfire, but if you don't like that voice you're SOL with about 1/3 of the orange box. Commence disappointment now.

Look. There are people who REALLY REALLY need welfare. My taxes go to them, and I don't begrudge a penny of it.

People do abuse the system. People cheat, and they take home my money, and they spend it on themselves, and it irks me a little. But it never fails to amaze me that people think that this is a reason why welfare is a bad thing.

Is working for a salary a bad thing because some people are paid too much?
Is politics a bad thing because it corrupts some politicians? I'd be willing to bet that, proportionally, there are a lot more corrupt politicians than welfare abusers.

How the mighty have fallen. I've been around for a while, though not as long as some, and I can tell you with absolute clarity that there was a time when Demon were almost certainly the best ISP in the UK, and there was a time - long after that - when PlusNet were without any doubt the best ADSL provider in the country.

This isn't their only gaffe, there was that, there was the email, there was also the complete decimation of all their users cgi bin data a couple of years ago. Now I back stuff up regularly, but that was a hit even for me.

In actual fact I moved out of disgust when they took on a huge surge in new numbers due to being the only ADSL ISP with an unlimited data policy - and boy did they advertise it - and then shortly after that they started punishing all the heavy users with completely crippled accounts (makes Virgin Media's new policies seem generous). I was never one of those heavy users, but I left all the same.

Hard to believe but just six months earlier they had a 24 hour tech support PHONE service, in the UK, and every guy I ever spoke to knew exactly what he or she was talking about.

People have always spoken highly of pipex, for years and years, before broadband even twinkled. I've had no experience of them, but it's hard to argue with constancy.

Interestingly enough, some of the largest charitable contributions in history have been anonymous. A person more interested in doing good than getting credit should probably follow suit. I'm not wealthy, but I do donate to charity and I always do so anonymously. I think this is a much more honorable practice. This is an excellent point, and I also applaud you for your (previously) anonymous charitable actions. But, to play the devil's advocate, there might also be reasons for not making philanthropic commitments anonymously. Firstly, to raise awareness, and secondly to garner further funding - for example, Warren Buffet's commitments to the Gates foundation may have come about because the Gates foundation is in the limelight. If the reason for donating publicly is kudos, then this is a bad action. If the reason for donating publicly is to enable the charity, then this is a good action. These two things may be indistinguishable in all but intention, which we will never know. So I say, bash Gates all you like. He may very well be donating for dishonourable reasons. And if he's not, he won't care a jot what we think. I will say one thing though - Gates was donating for years before the Gates Foundation made any kind of impact, so my personal belief is that he chooses to do it out of duty, or charity, rather than to mitigate the opinions of others. But I may very well be wrong. At the end of the day, at least more good is being done than if Gates were not donating.

From a purely word processing standpoint, this is both the right and the wrong time for OpenOffice.org to challenge the MS crown. It's the right time because, hell, Word 2007 looks more different to Word 2003 than Writer does, on the surface of it. It's the wrong time because, finally, there is a worthy version of Word on the market. It has been ten years since the Office team released anything this decent and free of bloat. But for all those OSS nuts out there, yes, really, now is the time to push Open Office. A bit of serious market share for OSS is always a good thing.

But we know in our heart of hearts that these are phone calls, and should be treated as such - just like most of us understand that emails are private, if not by law then at least by convention. There is meant to be a spirit of the law, as well as the letter of the law and the fact of the matter is that if the feds are opening emails because of a legal loophole - because nobody saw email coming in time to protect it in law - then that is a situation that needs to be fixed.

There were also protests in other UK cities on that day. It's not a 'very small portion of the population'. Sure, it's not a majority - but the majority don't even vote. If the same portion of the US protested, there would be about 9 million people protesting in front of the whitehouse - and by 'in front of the whitehouse' I mean 'halfway to Boston'. No, the reason budget airlines have grown in popularity is that they are undercutting ALL of the segmented prices of the major airlines. Trust me, if British Airways had a 'Cargo Class' flight that was cheaper than all the 'budget' airlines, I'd be packing myself into a suitcase and going on a cheap holiday. The reason that Apple don't have seperate upgrade prices, is because their market is loyal enough that they can be meticulously gouged, and will still come back for more. Enjoy your overpriced branding, really knock yourself out - but my money only goes so far.
