Although most of the comments have been regarding corporate back ups of huge amounts of data. Backing up data is just as important for the Home EU. I can't count how many times I have had customers bring in their units with fried hard drives that had bunches of irreplaceable pictures, and documents of all sorts they had downloaded, or created but had failed to burn to discs, or put on flash drives. Sometimes I have been able to get the drive working long enough to copy said files, but in most cases not. It is a message I preach and preach and preach, is a.25 cent disc, and 30 min. of your time to much to pay for these memories????
Probably most do not remember the original wing commander games. I spent hours flying around the universe killing cats. The series only improved with each episode as more sound and features were added. Then came the Privater series, man what a set of games. To me after these disappeared. The newer genre of games sucked, same old scenario just diffrent scenes. Only bit of brightness recently have been the WW II based fps. Other than that if you have to live vicariously thru a game you really need to get out more.
I have been reading posts all damn day deriding the use of humorous stories, on our beloved slashdot; on this famous day of the fools. Granted some of them are less than hilarious, but just the same there is some humor in all of them. If those of you that are such sticks in the mud (thats a polite term for heads up your asses) that you can't take one day out of your over serious lives to enjoy a bit of humor you indeed have a sad life. Here is a cyber dime. Go buy your self a sense of humor
Oh yeah I am out of mod points so those of you that have any left mod this as insightful.
I have been in the IT field since the punch card days. There is one thing I have noticed especially recently. The pay scale in almost all tech fields are falling. Why you may ask, simply because every university and community college out there are grinding out IT grads, like robots turn out chips.
Granted most of them are drones, but they are flooding the work force and are willing to do the work cheaper just to get in. This does not include the off shore operations that are cutting prices. So being a business who's bottom line is profit; why should I pay a lot when I can hire a trainable drone CHEAP.
Man Oh Man do I find this so exciting, and such a life saver too.
I am slowly going deaf;(not so slowly if you ask my wife) it is to the point now that I have had to learn how to read lips.
Unfortunately I cannot afford the cost of a hearing aide, as they are selling for 6k or more.
So if this is true I should be able to hear through my fingers or any other body part I care to, or am allowed to press up against whoever is speaking. Sure wouldn't mind testing said theory with Jennifer Love Hewitt .
to be quite honest with you I post this after a day in which my mother in law died while holding my hand and I have consumed a half a fifth of 15 year old Laphorge.I downloaded 2.0 this afternoon. I like the new interface especially the tab bar, and the individual little xe thingies on the individuals tabs.
My shop does warranty work on HP's, and other machines. I know how big a piece of crap box they build, they are truly a proprietary piece of junk.
.
It will only be a matter of time before HP does the same thing Dell did, and turn a great machine into another proprietary piece of junk.
Who they put in charge of what. If a particular group, terrorist or not, decides to crash the web it is going to happen. There is no stopping extremest actions, this is being proven everyday. Sure you will catch some of them, but it is there is always that one that gets through.
Perhaps I am a bit elitist about what I consider a classic. But you got to admit any "technical classic" would read better if a bit of spice was added.
Ie. Egbert caressed the keyboard as if it were his beloved Caroline's creamy full breasts. (Insert chapter two examples here) The Perl script flowing from his fingers as his mind raced, dreaming of Caroline's flashing perfectly formed thighs and the evening's pleasures awaiting him. Ecstasy washes over Egbert like a tropical waterfall as he finishes the example successfully, and Caroline in his mind.Sitting back in his chair Egbert breathes a sigh of relief, His eyes suddenly fly open, and Egbert leaps from his chair gripping his steely sword, rushing off to do battle with his raging inner demons.
Now don't that read a whole lot better than just blah blah blah.
IF they test em on the corrupt bastards that are ruining our country, and causing the people to resort to civil disobedience just so they can be heard.
Granted to many voting is a useless act. They use the excuse why bother nothing will change. This is exactly what those that are in power count on to hold power. The fewer people that vote insure that these corrupt bastards stay in power. The solution you ask??? Simple, run for office yourself on any level and get all of your unregistered friends to register and vote for you. This will encourage others to do the same thing, this is the first step to true reform. It will not happen over night, nothing really does, but if we keep at it things will slowly change. The second solution is to become Gates rich and just buy the corrupt bastards then tell them which laws you want passed or not.
Damn I'm old. I remember when classics were such books as Ivanhoe, The Virginian, the Iliad and the like.
Never ever a technical manual no matter how well written it may be. Not to say one couldn't be. That is if you threw in a bit of sword/gun play and a love interest or so.
Speaking strictly from a hardware outlook, problem solving is much more important to me that any degree or cert. Unfortunately schools today are grinding out idiots that are only good at spouting acronyms. Over the last few years I have fired more so called techs with degrees and a A+ cert., than I care to remember. Because they were blooming idiots that were only good at taking a test but not worth a damn at solving problems. Now when I interview a new tech I present them with a computer that I have disabled. If they can fix it they get the job, if not no job. And in my opinion that is the way any tech position should be filled.
Budget cuts have to start somewhere. As long as the material is available for access who cares how scientist get it. As for the question of ONLY 2 million dollars out of a 7 billion dollar budget, reminds me of the saying "a million here and a million there pretty soon your talking about a lot of money".
There will be no punishment harsh enough to stop some people from trying to gain funds in this way. An excellent example of this is the failed "war on drugs", even though the penalties have gotten harsher the drug trade is still flourishing and billions are being made. Are the purveyors of these drugs knowledgeable of the laws they are breaking and the sentences that will be handed down to them if caught?? Of course they are, but they are still willing to take that risk, simply because of greed. The big difference here is the perpetrators of cyber crimes such as this one really don't know what their punishment will be, nor would they care because they are operating through greed, and their own arrogance of thinking they are smarter than those that are out to stop their fraudulent activities.
Is the fact that AT&T, who spends more on network security than the gross national income for a lot of countries was compromised, and confidential information was stolen.
It doesn't matter how their multi layered defenses got breached, what does matter is they did get breached. The lesson here is IF they can be breached who can't??
I purchased an Okidata microline 590 way way back in the early 90's. I still use it for all my black and white printing. This Printer has worked flawlessly for years and has followed me from computer to computer just like a faithful dog. Not only is the paper cheap but at 4 million characters per tape refill which costs a whopping 8 bucks. There is just no way you can beat it for efficiency.
I too was an avid trackball user until the G5. Granted I do use keyboard commands quite often. But for gaming this mouse simply cannot be beat.
Political Correctness evolves into PC Nazism

The next thing you know dell, H.P., and Gateway will get together and declare the market dominance wars over.

Hmmmmmm why not run it on a Wii. I would choose the easy option, just sit in my easy chair and wiggle my toes for 20 some odd miles.
