Imagine the same concept applied to the inside of one's head.
You can have your brain, and indeed all other private spaces which belong to you alone, but once you step outside into the realm of public information, it is the public that decides what is wrong and what is right. You can disagree, but if you refuse the authority of the ethical majority you are only arguing for chaos.
I must conclude by saying that morality is in fact entirely based on principle. In the modern West, a complex mashup of Christian remains and individual utilitarian desires make up the principle. We "follow our hearts", with a little reasoning, and that applies to the conversation we're having now. But even on utilitarian grounds, the happiness/utility of the whole is taken above your own should you aim to disrupt it.
You were more likely than not right in the desert, which is a lot worse than being in the city and operating out of air conditioned buildings. I used to live in kuwait and had less problems with sand&dust than many other places. If you can use the equipment in a closed area then you should be fine.
Education is for everybody. There should be no excuse for him to leave school only for the money, because the minute this wonderful company comes down he's going to be in deep shite. There shouldn't be a problem with playing hard and maintaining at least a passing grade in school and college.
This highlights the interesting difference between what's legal and what's right.
Very well, but he was referring to people censoring themselves without government intervention, which means that the "majority" thinks this action in "right".
I too don't give a flying f*ck at a rolling dohnut about law trying to decide "right and wrong", but my ethics comprise no argument against the rest of the "majority". If they all think it's wrong, and I think it is right, there is an obvious bias in my views that makes them...well, wrong. The idea that the people of a country censor something on their own accord because of a unified belief that it should be censored - that idea is natural and difficult to belittle.
We should go with it even if we disagree, because we are no better then everyone else.
I'm younger than you are, comp.science major, and I take paper over aritificial methods of I/O any day. Have you ever been to an ACM contest? Most people find it far easier to solve things/come up with ideas/design on paper than through the use of a terminal.
There is nothing like a pen - a real pen though, not some stylus or other nonsense. It's not about being old school..it's just that human instinct has us drawn to the idea of inscribing the abstraction of thought, i.e symbols, on a hard surface, and obtaining it from the same.
I read info from screens all day, but nothing is more enjoyable than turning the pages of a book that you hold in your hands or can feel the texture of under your fingers. It is hard to explain, but for us mathematicians (and that's what we are in CS) it is far easier to reflect on paper. Maybe it's the calmness of the blank sheet relative to the excitement of the monitor, maybe it's our imagination. But we are not ancient. You are just new here;)
Wouldn't it be sad if they couldn't collectively agree on a name for this type of collective effort, even using their collaborative capabilities induced by computers?
This is still very primitive, and very risky, and very omg-leave-my-brain-alone-ish. What happens when I am losing and my brain is behaving wildly as I bitterly curse the guy on my team?
On the other hand, if this tech goes far enough and can become mobile, we could have Predator - like soldiers who can control shoulder-mounted turrets with their eyes while they fire their small-arms manually. That would be awesome.
Indians import all their light from US servers that produce this energy, and I therefore suggest the Indian government put a tariff or quota on this outrageous and unchecked commodity. You can't let everything just slide through those tubes and into Indian territory. Think of the childr.. never mind.
All this is nothing, just analysts going at it again. The real shockers will come when we decide to invade/bomb another country with large contributions to the oil markets (let's say Iran). It is the news that makes the market move, the rest is a load of BS coming from people who have no idea what the earth holds or where, and that is being revealed on a non-regular basis.
Always good to be very prudent, but keep the tinfoil hats for the real situations.
What will happen to our copyright worries? How will google deal with the censorship issues recently involving Youtube? How will content management differ when you go from a 60-person company to becoming 1.25% of Google Inc?
I think what most of us are worried about is this big-corporation-invites-lawsuits type of thing. In addition, Google has always been about profit. YouTube is charity in comparison. I hate to think about what would happen if Chinese users posted political satire videos and the Chinese government decided to send Google some email.
But I could say a lot of things about proprietory drivers and wireless chips and video cards and the nightmares that we go through every time we buy a new peripheral that doesn't have generic drivers:D
It's not that windows is better at running the hardware or supporting it, it's just that the market demands that manufacturers put their greatest efforts in the Windows platform.
My wife is horribly bad at downloading and installing crap and malware, visiting crappy, malicious pages with internet exploder, etc.
Your wife did online gambling sites and pornography and you knew about it? And being crap at installing malware is a GOOD thing!!
j/k
I use Ubuntu sometimes for development, along with Fedora and other "nice" distributions. What benefit/savvy-ness would I gain in moving to a distro like Debian? There is nothing you can't do with FC5 and a src package. Performance aside, why do you need less friendly distros in your life?
We stand to gain so much if we're not all blown to bits first.
Say that again, please. We're playing with nukes and communists. What are the chances of this whole ordeal going through without something being blown up, on this planet or on another?
I have a friend who is my exact mental opposite, bucause he sucks. I use him to figure out whether or not I'll like a movie or game: If he likes it, I won't. If he doesn't , I'm gonna love it. He still doesn't know though, the idiot.
There are car designs that have become timeless trademarks, there are architectural styles that have never died. While the Ipod will certainly die, the design is something different altogether.
Still a pointless thing to think about anyhow. We could be defeating cancer, proving mathematical theorems or taking our wives out in this time. Slow news day.
Every time an analyst makes the mistake of being featured on slashdot, their reputation loses karma. I've never seen such a bunch of loonies. Who CARES when Vista is going to be released? Apart from the fact that we'll lose all the "Just in time for Vista" jokes, nobody gives a damn. And the fact that the analysts are split over the matter makes it even more comical - it's like some major disagreement on a physical theory that gives it an air of importance.
When Vista gets released, you know what I'll do? I'll go to the toilet and take a dump, then resume my normal life. That's how much Vista will affect the average human being. I hope analysts get better things to do. I can imagine people doing time in jail who have more productive weekends than this.
If an analyst wants an alternative job, think stand-up comedy. You guys rule. I've never seen more jokes posted than as responses to an "analysts-said-this" story. If you want to entertain us then at least be honest about it.
Why doesn't NASA equip its satellites and shuttles with some of the advanced technology available to fighter jets today, tuned to meet cosmo-specs? If you can dodge the bigger chunks then all you need to stay in business is good armoring against the pea-sized debris. Right?
Can someone insightful please explain timothy's choice of dept for this summary. No idea what he meant.

In which case it stops being a bad thing.
That's the funniest thing I've heard in years. For the first time I'm glad I don't have much karma!
LOLLLOLOOLROFLLORFLF!!!!11!!
Nonsense.
;)

..as if a million shareholders cried out in disgust then went suddenly bankrupt.

Ok, ok I'm leaving now, quit the shoving.

Indian politicians are challenging us to question their mental stability.
American politicians, on the other hand, know better.

It's Baldur's Gate you clown. I know the guy in the poster is bald, but come on. You're giving Freud too much credit.

I have to ask (almost on-topic): how can your Suburban burn less gasoline than my Prius?
But what was he doing in the forest, and with whom?!
