Re:Frost is spammable, use Freenet Message System
The Freenet anonymous forum software "Frost" is spammable, and has been under prolonged repeated attacks for some time, so it is fairly unusable.
Use the Freenet Messaging System (FMS) instead. It is a decentralised and highly spam-resistant anonymous forum system, using a web of trust. It has an NNTP interface, so you can use a regular newsreader to read and write messages.
(That is another Freenet link, you need to have Freenet installed for it to work.)
-
just use freenet
just use freenet together with frost
this is an index of all (?) "freesites" - you can visit as soon as you have freenet running
for linux users:
wget "http://downloads.freenetproject.org/alpha/installer/new_installer.jar"
java -jar new_installer.jar
cd "/path/to/freenet/" ./run.sh restart
mkdir frost
cd frost
wget "http://mesh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/jtcfrost/frost-04-Mar-2008.zip"
unzip "frost-04-Mar-2008.zip"
chmod +x frost.sh ./frost.sh
you need to have java and I don't remember whether you need to run this as root. iirc you don't. The filename from the sourceforge link will vary - just check http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=25070 -
Re:Don't download the source via the torrent
Hmm, that's displaying weird. In case
/. formatting screwed that up, here it is as a link. (Won't work if you're not running Freenet.) -
Re:Well, that's good...
The first link from the Ultimate Freenet Index (one of the larger index sites) is to images of violence in Tibet.
Is that somehow not good enough for you?
Link (requires freenet to be installed and running.)

Re:Firefox extensions?
First, freenet currently works in the browser as a proxy - so install freenet, and start it, it will work just like that(well, not really as it uses horrendus cryptographic keys rather than freenet://uri)
example: http://127.0.0.1:8888/SSK@rBjVda8pC-Kq04jUurIAb8Iz AGcPAgM/TFE//
Second, the more recent versions of freenet are far more usable than any I've ever tried before. I actually can load content, a page in often a minute or so (for freenet, that's fast!). -
An introduction to FreeMailFreenet-only link to the page is here
Regular internet link to the page is http://freenet.org.nz/freemail/
Freemail runs on Freenet or Entropy networks.
[from the page.... apologies for formatting - lameness filter...]
FreeMail is a peer-to-peer Mail Server program (aka 'Mail Transfer Agent' or 'MTA') that makes it possible for you to send and receive email messages with unprecedented levels of privacy and anonymity.
Normal mailservers (such as Exim, Sendmail, qMail etc) communicate directly over the normal Internet, and send/receive all of your emails in plaintext for Big Brother and goodness knows how many companies to see. Even if your ISP uses encryption for transfer of mail, a simple court order (or bribe) is all it takes for your emails to end up in front of prying eyes, even many years after you sent or received them..
On the other hand, FreeMail encrypts your messages and hides them within the privacy-protecting Freenet network, where they are picked up and decrypted only by the people you're sending your messages to.
Features
A lot of thought has gone into FreeMail's design, to arrive at a secure, robust yet user-friendly system to satisfy your email communication needs.
So far, FreeMail includes the following features:- 100% compatible with normal email client programs (eg Mozilla,
Evolution, Outlook Express) - Military-grade encryption (RSA 4096-bit asymmetrical, 256-bit Blowfish symmetrical)
- Protects every aspect of your privacy, by concealing:
- What you are sending and receiving
- Who you are sending to or receiving from
- Whether you are sending or receiving messages at all
- Whether you even have Freemail installed
- Convenient Web interface for installation, administration and viewing of mail statistics
- Fully peer to peer (does not depend on any in-Freenet service)
- Unlimited personal email accounts (called 'identities'), that cannot be linked together or traced to you
- Censors out 'X-Mailer' header, to protect your privacy
- Unlimited message sizes
- Full support for message attachments
- Interacts with your favourite email client via the standard SMTP/POP3 protocols, with user-selectable host-based access restrictions
- Difficult and time-consuming for spammers
People familiar with Freenet will also understand and appreciate the following features:
- Works fine with transient nodes, as long as the node (and the Freemail software) runs once every couple of days or so
- Convenient to associate mail accounts with Freenet freesites, or use separately
- All data inserted into and retrieved from Freenet is encrypted to the recipient and cryptographically signed by the sender; recipient verifies signatures by accessing the sender's freemail mailsite (a special kind of freesite whose URI is isomorphic to the sender's purported freemail address)
- Receipted delivery of messages
- Tenacious retry/confirmation protocol to overcome Freenet performance fluctuations
- Every mail account is self-certifying. Certificates are validated via special 'freesites' created by FreeMail
- Good use of Freenet keys:
- KSK queues are protected from spamming/spoofing by the mandatory signature mechanisms
- Ability to relocate the mess queues in the event of DoS attacks
- Ability to balance performance against use of system resources
At this time, there are no third-party certification. The author is open to suggestions from users about how this should happen. For example, a web of trust amongst linked freesites, assigning 'karma' to mail addresses.

Goatse is on Freenet!
Everybodies favourite site is here!. Concidering that Goatse.cx was recently taken off the net this is a good thing!

Re:Better? I don't think so
Try this freesite. It's a good test of the system.

Get the source code from Freenet
If you are running Freenet's unstable branch, you can download it from here. Its about 200MB and will take a few hours to download (Freenet is averaging about 30k/sec these days). I grabbed it and it looks like the real thing.

This assumes that you are running Freenet on your own computer on the default fproxy port 8888. If you tried the previous key and it didn't work it is probably due to the space slashdot inserted in it. Either remove the space, or use the link I provide above.

Try Britanny's Girls. Horrendously slow, as is most of Freenet, but high-quality images. Some movie clips, too.

Re:What about IRC?
If you can chat with people, you can transfer files over that medium--but it isn't necessarily pretty. There's a script called UUIIP on Freenet that aims to allow file transfer over IIP.

This is what freenet is designed for!
It is supposed to provide a save harbour for all contraversal sites, like this one! Ive inserted his site into the freenet. You can download freenet here, and access the site here

Re:Good.
The potential is amazing! Think BitTorrent.
As the number of people on /. that use Freenet increases, stories can start linking to the FreeSite of an article--for example The Freedom Engine--along w/ the 'old' web site.
Instant distributed mirroring.
Bloody cool. -

Re:New upgrades work well
I've mirrored some normal web content to Freenet . This freesite (only available if running Freenet) is a mirror of http://www.operatingthetan.com, my normal website on Keith Henson v. Scientology.
My major gripe with Freenet to this date is while it is marketed toward "weblike" applications, it often loses content more than a click or so in (note the front page of my freesite there works almost perfectly but if you click in the performance is significantly degraded).
I think its killer app might ultimately be the distribution of large 'splitfiles' with FEC encoding. I don't want to nuke Freenet right now by suggesting downloading huge pirate AVIs, but if you find one and try it, you'll see what I mean.

Reliable 150MB file delivery in Freenet todayIt is worth mentioning that Freenet now incorporates a "redundant splitfile" mechanism (using FEC) that allows the reliable downloading of massive files. Some guy has made a bunch of 150MB ogg video files of Star Trek Enterprise episodes available, and they are all reliably downloadable (at about 40k/sec across a broadband connection) from Freenet.
To recap:
- Reliable
- Anonymous
- Totally decentralized
- More popular files are more widely distributed thus avoiding any
/. effect

Re:A quick description
The Freenet gateway page (or "web interface") has three Freenet URLs: The Freedom Engine, and a couple others. (Currently "Freenet Forever" and "Cruft". I'm glad Cruft made it, finally -- the author deserves it.)
The Freedom Engine (TFE) is published by (or claims to be published by) the same person who did "Content of Evil" in the older days. It's essentially Freenet's version of Yahoo! (the old one, before they added a bunch of services) -- a portal to other sites within Freenet. Go there. Be amazed by the variety, both good and bad.
