I suppose you could argue that the Mormons have some excellent research into how Native Americans are really the Lost Tribe of Israel, or that Scientology has published some fascinating infromation about how we are all messed up with Thetans and Engrams, or the Institute for Creation Research has plenty of proof that the earth is only 6000 years old, but I am hightly skeptical of those sources too.

Actually a decent chunk of satanists see Lucifer as being solely a metaphor for life, or a "force" equivalent to the Christian (C.S. Lewis et al) view of God as an underlying moral force to the universe. I'd like to point out that using carbon fibers or nanotubes in consumer electronics has electrical advantages. Using a conductive filler you can achieve electromagnetic interference (EMI) protection or electrostatic dissipation (ESD). Other conductive fillers such as carbon black or metallic powders would work but due to the small aspect ratio of the particles they require large amounts, and this degrades the mechanical properties of the polymer. Microsoft made two graphical chat programs, both a result of Microsoft Research's Social Computing Group:

Microsoft Chat (AKA Comic Chat) - An IRC program that used a 2D comic strip to display the action. Features included gestures and custom avatar selection. The program was also was famous for spamming IRC rooms with useless metadata text like "# Appears as AVATARNAME". For more information, read this paper.

Microsoft V-Chat - A 3D chat program which allowed avatars to interact with in 3D space. Features were similar to MS Chat and included gestures and custom avatar selection.

I think the last version was v-chat 2.0.

I can't honestly remember if the avatars were 2d, it claimed that you could design them in ms paint. I remember experimenting with it when the MSN chat site switched to pretty much pay only, and was trying to be helpful and exploring easy to use irc clients. MS v-chat 2.0 was basicly a chat room, a virtual room that you can wonder around with your avatar and explore. While this was cool-beans, this wasn't really practical because it was too much work to just chat.

MS comic chat, unlike v-chat 2.0, I believe came with earlier versions of explorer, moving win95/98 users to a true blue irc server was as simple as tossing them a mic:// link. Ok, it really wasn't "that" simple, they could get there, but most didn't like it due to the fact it was diffrent and didn't support fonts. All and all I feel Microsoft did a good job in not only making IRC accessable to the masses, but incorperating the cool twitish features such as sounds events and comic expressions in order for users to communicate their state of mind.

I have to say this thread has produced some of the most entertaining links I've seen in months.

I'm personally working on better sensor heads. 99.9% of the homebrew gear uses the Vishay remote control receiver modules, and their performance in sunlight is terrible. I am also thinking of building a system that is compatible with Survivor Shot while still supporting other options like shooter ID.

And as far as using real lasers- bad idea! Laser pointers are -not- eye safe. In fact the current crop of Class IIIa pointers are rated as a potential hazard from a -single- exposure. Even the older Class II/IIa are considered

Failing that, simunitions as suggested previously would be another good option -- that is if you can afford the ammunition. And if you feel like shelling out an additional few thousand dollars to equip yourself and all your buddies with REAL handguns/rifles to shoot the ammo.

Naturally, this might not even BE an option since your local government might have "problems" with a group of yahoos running around the woods (or any other area) with REAL weapons. ([sarcasm on] After all, the Second Amendment only applies to SOME people who live in the "right" places or know the right people. [sarcasm off])

As for paintball... Yeah it's "fun" but HARDLY anymore "realistic." As a gun owner and avid shooter of "real-steel" guns, I've played paintball and it isn't a totally satisfying experience. Paintball ballistics aren't anywhere close to true bullets. (Hitting something at 20- or even 10 yards requires mortar-like aiming techniques in my humble experience.)

Airsoft guns look closer to the real deal (which again may get you in trouble with the local law enforcement types) and supposedly the 6-mm pellets (as opposed to the .68-cal, or roughly 17-mm, paintballs) have a flatter, more realistic trajectory.

But I have no experience with them, so I really couldn't say either way.

Perhaps the ultimate would be to outfit airsoft guns with laser emmitters and players with harness that shock you when hit by a laser?

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet (apparantly). Ken Jennings has a webpage! I'm sorry to report to the /. crowd that it was designed in MS Word. But it seems to be more of a personal checklist (and a window into how he got so much "useless" knowledge) than a page he intended for other people to see.

Why do I avoid MS?

Because I never had to submit to the Borg in the first place. My background is in graphic design and type design, and all the cool stuff in that little world was on the Mac OS, so I never had to get a Windows Machine. I *did* have to aquaint myself to the Borg Mind that is Windows, and when I was doing technical support in the late 1990s, I had to get *really* good at it (win3.1, 95, 98, NT). Everytime I found myself in the depths of the living pit of despair and mediocrity that is Windows, my love for that which is not MS only grew.

I still think the MacOS, specifically OSX, is superior to Linux, but I am also fairly well convinced that Linux OSs will be of comparable quality and ease of use in less than 5 years. Once the apps on Linux get GUIs worth using and looking at (which I also believe will be in the next 5 years), then Apple will have an interesting dilemma, but not half as interesting as what MS will face in the next few years in trying to get the travesty that is Longhorn out the door.

At first, I detested Windows because of its instability. Look at it sideways and the BSOD would come visit. Woof. MacOS v7 - 9 wasn't any prize for stability, but it did improve over time, and would often fail in a less spectacular way. Linux has always (to me) been more stable than either, except for OSX.

Another thing I dislike about Windows is its gamma. Looking into a windows machine is a dim and dingy thing compared to Apple. (I wish Linux were brighter as well...) And the OS has always been cumbersome, ugly and just plain nasty. Remember IRQs? What a load that was - just to hook up a freaking scanner or install a CD drive was often a nightmare in Windows.

So, let's see- it was ugly (still is, IMHO), unstable, unfriendly, and owned by a rapacious monopolistic enterprise run by an autistic geek and Monkey Boy. It's an insecure system in continuous need of updating, it's the source of continuous viruses and worms because of the Swiss Cheese nature of the OS and VB.

What exactly is there to BRING me to Windows? So I can trade .doc files with every other office drone?

So: that's why I don't use Windows. It's Just Not Worth The Hassle.

The definition of a pointer does NOT require arithmetic, arbitrary pointing, or arbitrary data writing. Dictionary.com defines it as "A variable that holds the address of a core storage location." Java just happens to ensure you can't do these things because it thinks you'll screw it up (and in most cases it's right).

One thing I really hate about Java is it's severe lack of function pointers. They are very very useful if used properly, and Java really should be putting them in imo.

I suggest you read a book about implementing programming languages.

Lindows Steals Copyrighted Art and Promotes Porn

Another day, another example of the cavalier attitude that Robertson has regarding IP, the community, everything...

Michael Robertson is a strange creature, bucking the trend like Steve Jobs, but only in very, very bad ways. The funny thing is (funny in a really perverse kind of way), Jobs is generally the guy Linux zealots love to hate (he was the cool kid in school). Robertson is the Linux-popularising martyr for FOSS, the almost untouchable.

Back in the day, MP3.com was lauded as visionary, a chance for the music companies to make something of online distribution, and so on. When the RIAA poo-pooed this and went after MP3.com, he played the prima donna and we all boohooed together - Michael tried so hard, he really cared about us, he identified with us, he wanted to free intellectual property. He was on our side. When MP3.com died, defeat reverberated around the geek/FOSS world...

So then this thing Lindows appears on the horizon, with talk of full Windows application compatibility, something that was later dropped when the WINE team realised what a prick Robertson was. When any other company makes crazy claims like that, someone will get on the case. In this case, the Lindows team rewrote history to erase this little hiccup from their PR. There are murmurs on the Internet about how source is not posted and so on, but somehow Lindows carries on.

Then Robertson takes on Microsoft. Robertson is the Man again, the Good Guy fighting against every true geek's arch nemesis. When he loses, Microsoft are evil bastards beyond reproach (I am not suggesting that this isn't the case, but bear with me...).

I think perhaps this could be put a clearer way - ask yourself only "Is my enemy's enemy always my friend, no matter what?" Personally, my answer to that would be no, but I suppose YMMV. Put it this way, I have no desire to ally myself with a person whose sole motivation to free the world from the shackles of IP (which would of course undermine the GPL) serves only to allow him to continue to profit off the unpaid labour of others.

Robertson is not a visionary. He's the asshole who was never tough enough to beat all us Slashdot-reading geeks up, but never missed the opportunity to hurl abuse from just round the corner. And he strikes me as being from the same sort of management school as McBride - his ethics are about as loose.

However, Winamp has pretty much always been free as in beer. Even when they had registration, there was a distinction between the Lite version and the Pro version. At one point I think they were even planning to do "adware" though I'm not sure if a release with that was ever done.

Over here is a complete archive of Winamp releases, except the none of the frelling links work. But you can see the release history at least. At a certain point, Nullsoft was bought by AOL and thus didn't need to do the shareware/registration thing anymore.

As for Open Source, Nullsoft has released a lot of OpenSource stuff, pretty much all for Windows. The most useful being their installer program, I've seen a lot of freeware packages use NSIS. Here's all the programs Nullsoft has released recently. I've always liked Nullsoft's naming approach...

(Historical note: One of the most popular plugins for Winamp has been Geiss, developed by Mr. Ryan Geiss. He originally wrote it independently. Then he got a job with Creative Labs working on Oozic, Creative's own idea for a media player with nifty visuals. Oozic started life as Lava but had to change names, probably for trademark reasons. Sadly, Creative Tech turned asswipe with Oozic, declaring it only available for those who bought their hardware and had it on the driver CD. Anyways, Mr. Geiss left Creative to go work for Nullsoft! Where he developed some more nifty visualization tools such as Milkdrop and Geiss II.)

(BONUS Historical note: Before Winamp, before multi-media players with visualization plugins, there was Cthugha by Kevin "Zaph" Burfitt. Cthugha started life as a DOS freeware program that did pretty VGA animations in synch with music from an audio CD. Eventually a version was developed for Windows 95, and 3D support was even added providing you used a 3DFX card. Sadly the project has languished for years now but not before Kevin released source and a number of folks ported Cthugha to MacOS, Linux, Java and yes, even a Winamp plugin!)

The whack-a-hamster game from one of those videos seems to be a clone of an old PC game that I wrote in 2000 called Hampsterdeath. Not that I'm prepared to sue or anything. (You may notice that the Hampsterdeath download url is down; this may just be the circular Tuit I need to get freepuzzlearena back up on the net.)

The 'editors' of Slashdot, as they call themselves, are homosexual swingers with cleverly disguised nicknames. CmdrTaco (aka "Rob" Malda) is the "head" honcho of Slashdot. Cmdr obviously refers to his desire to dominate over his gay partners, and Taco is obviously a sly reference to his colon. Update: It is well known that Taco claims to be married to Kate Fent. No one really believes that 'she' is actually his wife. We have proof that this 'she' is actually a he. It turns out that Kathleen Fent is an anagram of KHAN FELT EN ET. So this Kate of his is really Khan who "felt in it". I will not describe what that means as I am sure you can imagine yourself.Update From AC: Kate Fent = FAT TEEN, K. Michael Sims, who goes as 'michael' on Slashdot, is a well known thug and advancer of homosexual agenda. Macintosh computers are well known as the Gay computer due to their homosexual colors and stylings. An email exchange between 'Pudge' and Apple HQ have been leaked by a former Apple employee who converted to heterosexuality. These two emails (here and here) have been repeatedly posted on Slashdot, but are quickly censored by Slashdot moderators who do not want the public to know about its agenda.Update form Subject Line Troll - it appears the O'Day is just a few letter changes away from I'm Gay and rhymes with O'Day. Is anyone surprised that Mr. Pudge is a fudge packing Mac hippie? Simoniker, a recent addition to Slashdot has been uncovered as Mr. Goatse himself. Simoniker is a frequent poster to the Games section of Slashdot, obviously because he enjoies modded versions of Quake 3 and UT2K3 as a homosexual warrior who likes to 'overcome' his opponents with his exagerated sized love member. In addition, Simoniker is an anagram of KEN I RIM SO (Ken is probably his current boyfriend) and MEN I IRK SO (which refers to his frustratingly troubled gay relationships, probably due to his rather large asshole).Update from AC: I'M ON ERIK'S...
