Have you ever watched Parking Wars?
For those in the US we have a show on a cable channels A&E that has a show called Parking Wars. http://www.aetv.com/parking-wars/
They go up and down streets looking for people who are not following the law on how and where to park and also run checks on all the cars to see if any outstanding parking violation are on them. And how do they get the people to pay up? They put what is called a "Boot" on the car that makes it so they can not move the car from the spot. -
Re:Uh oh
No, it means that you should clean up your room. Or maybe try to sign up for a stint on horders.

A no reason to hoard?
http://www.aetv.com/hoarders/digital-room/ Just think if all our junk could just tell us where they were and how much they like there new homes we would never need to hoard anything. I know my feelings of "what happened to (so and so)" would appease my feelings and I would feel much better. And I guess also if the equipment is being treated badly I could go and get it back and just keep it. Kind of like the Island of Misfit toys, until someone really wanted them. I can just see it - 1 calculator to a good home, requirement, it must report back to me periodic and if I find out you have been abusing I'll find out and I can take it back. That's the rule.

Re:A great submarine book..
There's already been a tv show made about the book. It's titled the same thing and came out a few years ago. It was done by A&E though, not PBS. You can get a DVD of it here: http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=70724

Re:"The Universe" on the History Channel
"The Universe" has a really bizarre online distribution model where they always have an assortment of "short" interesting clips and one or two old "full length episodes" posted for streaming.
For instance, the Full Episodes that are up now are "Nebulas" and "Cosmic Collisions"... and you can expect CC to be replaced by something else a week from now. For a 7-year old, I would venture to guess that watching this streaming over the internet isn't optimal though.
Another alternative is to just order the first season of DVDs and then watch the second season which is currently being shown.
Having said all that, the discussions on The Universe are definitely geared towards laymen and I wouldn't have a doubt that young teens would be able to grasp the concepts that they talk about. Plus, as an engineer in his mid-20's the show has taught me quite a lot about how exploration of "The Universe" has advanced in the last twenty years (an example at the top of my head is the presentation of hard evidence of the asteroid that struck the Yucatan and killed the dinosaurs -- hint: a layer of glass at the impact site).
So... even if your 7-year old seems too young for it, you would still probably learn a thing or two and become more equipped to answer her questions about science, space, creation, and the Universe.

Re:Go figure - it doesn't matter
How long will it be, before Judges and courtrooms are sick of these petty charges, and start only allowing the larger criminals who actually sell and distribute?
It doesn't matter how sick the judges and courtrooms get. As long as the law says what it says, they can do what they do.
In my opinion, which doesn't count except on ballot day, the whole criminal justice system is screwed up - largely due to fatuous and incongruous drug laws. There are a number of states that don't agree with the federal government on Marijuana laws or penalties to the point of contention over federal funds.
Take for example the case in Cleveland a few weeks ago: A girl accused her ex-boyfriend of rape. He's arrested, but the juvenile detention center was full, so he was placed under house arrest with a monitor. Instead of being in the detention center where he should have been, he was at home. He took a shotgun, left home, found his accuser, and shot her in the face.

Undoubtedly, there were kids in that detention center on drug related, and non-violent offences. But, the violent criminal gets sent home to attempt murder.
I'm not an actuary but I'd bet that this type of thing happens all across the country on a regular basis. The system is broken when this type of thing can happen.
Interestingly, two nights ago on the History channel there was a show about the history of recreational pharmaceuticals. (In fact, there are two volumes in the series: http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id= 70805 that said something to the effect of (paraphrasing from memory here) "if the politicians who passed the Harris act had any idea what the world looks like today, it would never have been passed." The history of Cocaine is fascinating, and how it came to be illegal. I recommend the History Channel videos if you haven't seen them.
In any case, Newton once contended that a change in the gravitional field in one region of the Universe would be felt instantaneously in every other part of the Universe. It's similar to how the "war on drugs" has that type of effect on every other part of society.
So, how does this relate to the *AA? It doesn't directly. It's more of an analogy to how absurd laws and differing opinions, even by high-level government officials, still results in the same apathy and ineffectual legislation, and inaction on the part of our elected representatives. -

Re:Highways vs. Autobahn
Linking to facts may prove difficult, as it was recently on an A&E Special I watched entitled Modern Marvels: The Autobahn.
I did find a link to it here (in VHS format), which tells me that it MIGHT not be as current information as I understood it to be when I watched it, but they definitely made the claim.

Area 51 is not Unidentified
Area 51 on google maps
I watched a History Channel documentary on Area 51 recently titled 'History's Mysteries: Area 51: Beyond Top Secret,' it was very interesting.
Link: http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id= 73034
Interesting Area 51 facts:
Area 51 has the longest runways in the world.
Area 51 was the test site for the U2, SR-71, B2, and F-117 aircraft.
Area 51 is heavily guarded, and can only be seen from a mountaintop 24 miles away with a high-powered telescope.
You can scavenge aircraft wreckage from around its perimeter with a metal detector and sometimes are able to see the craft name and manufacturer on some of the pieces.
Area 51 employees bury most of the wreckage of crashed aircraft on its site in order for them not to end up in public scrap yards.
Area 51 has captured Russian Mig and other Russian aircraft which they flew and tested.
Area 51 was first officially acknowledged to exist in 1995 due to lawsuit from some of its employees against the US government.
Area 51 has the largest collection of fully-functional extra-terrestrial spacecraft in our Solar System (okay, I just made that last one up.) -
Re:Well, there are some causes for concern...
For a little dose of reality, watch "The First 48" on A&E. Except the CSI's shown there usually use a shoebox to superglue prints off of objects.

Obviously the Chinese govt is right
PKing obviously is a problem...
This guy sounds like he had serious problems, quitting his job to play games and basically dropping out of reality. It reminds me the TV show "Intervention", and the episode with the video game addict. -

Horatio Hornblower to Honor Harrington
Or even better, a TV series based on David Weber's Honor Harrington character, possibly back at Saganami Island.
Honestly, I think Honor Harrington would be best served by following the rather successful model of Horatio Hornblower from the series by C.S. Forester. With Battlestar Galactica doing well, I'd like to think that the SciFi channel would be willing to play the role of A&E. -
Re:Luck can be utterly crushed by good math. There was a good edutainment program on The History Channel recently called Breaking Vegas.
One of the members of that MIT blackjack team (Semyon Dukach) is now running BlackJackScience.com.

Re:Survivors? Can you show me one site that says anyone survived the Hindenburg? IMO that's just a whole load of too much fire + big fall to be survivable.
Almost 2/3 of the people on board survived. There was a History Channel show about the accident. A teenage crew member who worked in the galley even managed to recover his watch intact from the wreckage the day after the accident.

LinkBTW: This is the History Channel program I referenced above.
PS: If anyone has a copy of this please post a link. I love to collect these things. I've seen it myself of course but I have no TiVo or VCR

What About The Origional RLV?I just saw a thing on the shuttle a few days ago that aired on the History Channel. They said that the shuttle was origionaly designed to have an RLV, but it was canceled due to budget concerns. It was supposed to launch with the shuttle on it's back, and would fly up near orbit where the shuttle would detach and fly the rest of the way. The RLV would then land so that it could be used again. It looked sort of like a plane. Has anyone thought about updating the design for this thing and making it?
The best picture I could find was this one on HowStuffWorks.

Realistic Training EnvironmentAs I said in my previous reply, the army trains in the desert because they need clear radio channels and to be AWAY from populated area. Kind of a tall order in the United States. And they have been training there since the 1980's. The OPFOR was originally playing the part of the Soviets, but since we are buddies with them they now play the Kraznovians. (A made up country by the way.)
If you don't believe me that the real NTC is in the desert, get the Video tape[A&E's Online Store].

Have you ever watched "The Prisoner"?
Seriously... think about what you're getting at, then go hunt down a few episodes of The Prisoner, and use that as a hint. Decide for yourself how pleasant an idyllic (surveillance) society could be. Yes, it's fiction. Yes, it makes a *very* good point.

A&EJust giving the obligatory reference to the A&E documentary based on this story and, i presume, this book. You can get the movie (VHS&DVD) at A&E. Most notably, from the A&E store, we have this:
The Illustated Version of Longitude
"enriched with 178 lavish illustrations--including portraits, maps and scientific illustrations--complete with expansive, elegant captions that illuminate and expand upon the captivating story." Also available for a tad cheaper at amazon, i.e. shop around.
So basically, if we weren't so focused on cross promotion with thinkgeek, the one major criticism is moot ey?
arrrtttttttthhuuuuuuurrrrr

See the video -- it's pretty good
A&E did a big production of the book that was pretty good. You can order VHS or DVD direct from A&E's web site.
It showed a lot of the old mechanisms that were very cool. The early models were huge, which big ol' stabilization systems. You don't realize how hard the problem was until you see him go through all the early trials of trying to keep a clock accurate on a ship that is bobbing up and down and weaving all over the place.
