Re:Time to get rid of Tor
I think he has... ahem... balls to assert such a contrarian viewpoint on slashdot.
But, yeah, he's a loony reactionary. Just ignore him or laugh at him. "Collaborator" is a bit too generous.

Re:Sounds promising
It all depends on who you believe, we get all information (pro and anti strike) from biased sources, I did not expect anything else from HWR - article is written in classical style, to get emotional response. Check out this link http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/15496841-hostages-piccinin-quirico-heard-syrian-rebels-say-assad-not-responsible-for-chemical-attack.
It's propaganda war, only thing that we can be sure is that we do not know what really happens there. I think it's more probable that rebels used chemical weapons to frame Assad, just because it makes more sense - they are the loosing side and need US to intervene. -

Re:rumors...According to MacWorld, Apple critics are all just jealous, mis-informed and or paranoid...
Dan Moren, senior editor of Macworld, talked tech with cofounder of gdgt Ryan Block, Wired staff writer Christina Bonnington, Ars Technica editor Jacqui Cheng and tech blogger John Gruber.
In their eyes, Apple’s critics were misinformed, jealous and/or paranoid.
“People like the underdog,” Bonnington said. “People just cut Apple down because it’s in the headlines all the time.

Re:Shed the guilt, fast!
There are more stories like this out there. The "e-Waste Hoax" of Africa allowed dictators for years to seize working and repairable computers (the only ones Africans could afford), and created a crackdown with actual arrests. The UN spent two years trying to find out just how bad it was... and found out it wasn't bad at all. The imports were 85% reused, and 80% of the junk at African dumps was used for a decade before being finally tossed out by African consumers themselves. http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/11000554-ewaste-recycling-hoax-ngo-basel-action-network-profits-from-racist-images Unfortunately, African geeks and techs don't have the pull to get major media to rewrite / retell / retract the story.

I meant things like this: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/4132598-california-has-quarter-of-the-american-illegal-immigrant-population-an-essay-on-healthcare-and-illegal-immigrants
That's just the first hit on a google search. There's plenty more. And you can have free education without the nanny state. But my point on education wasn't that it was a "socialized" venture it was that the education in America has become increasingly more awful, especially when compared to the rest of the world.

Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia Pushed Back
The growth of engineering, technician, geek, nerd, or "tinkerer" networks in developing nations is critical to successful democratic development. Democracy can either thrive beside, or be stifled under, any religion, there's nothing special Islam does that Christianity hasn't tried. Egypt tried to "put the genie back in the bottle" in 2008, banning imports of used computers. Pakistan tried the same Pakistan Computer Association. These days the usual excuse to crack down on geeks and nerds in converging market is accusing them of "environmental crime" such as the 'e-waste hoax'.. But they will keep thinking of others, like "porn" or "piracy". It's a good idea to improve and reform "e-waste" imports, porn and piracy, but complete crackdowns on internet cafes and affordable white box manufacturers are the usual result. Dictators (usually not religious) create the backwards cultures by arresting network tinkerers, creating the conditions for reactionary religion. But Al-Jazeera will never put up with censorship. Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are all going to be fine... and Iran too... The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth.

Re:Did I miss something?
There's no actual accusation of it being from a movie in either article. One commenter posted this which is dated a few months ago (picture, not the comment). It seems plausible that this photo could be a stock photo from something, but the article sure does a very poor job of reporting that.

Re:This happens in more places than Zimbabwe alone
You were "isolated from the rest of the prisoners" for a weekend . Manning has been in "maximum custody" solitary confinement for about seven months . If you are trying to draw a parallel between these two events then you, sir, are truly an idiot.
The accusations come not only from Manning's lawyer but from Amnesty international and by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture.
But, hey, why don't you do some reading on the subject yourself?
For example, here's a statement by a psychiatrist and expert witness.
Or, since we are all so big on peer review an citations, try asking Google Scholar.Oh, just so you won't be under the impression that Manning is an isolated case, there are some 100,000 more like him.

Re:Its about control/censorshipDear moderator - how the fuck was that a troll. Dick.
Actually, it's probably just the opposite. After the BSD backdoor story and after the Wikileaks cables, maybe Russia is concerned about using Microsoft Windows. Of course, Microsoft would *never* work with the NSA/FBI/CIA/Control/Chaos on back-doors that undermine the security of Russia... I can't imaging why they would want their own operating system...
[dons tin foil hat] Do you think already having the source code to Windoof, and the source code to GNU/Linux, that the Russians may have based their choice on reasons other than licensing costs?

I don't think Microsoft needs to work with the NSA/FBI/CIA, etc on making Windows unsecure. They seem to do a pretty good job keeping it that way all on their own.

Re:What TheDirt.com should do
Either the summons went to the wrong mail address (Whois for thedirty.com) or it went to the right address and right defendant. It sounds like it went to the wrong name & address.
There is another possibility. It is becoming common for process servers to lie under oath that they served the defendant when in fact they did not:

Re:I am not scared
> From the article it sounds as if the issue in questions is water supply and how changing the normal rate of glacial melt could change how people live.
They may be able to fix that:
Quote: As of this year he has built 10 artificial glaciers, using a simple system of pipes and stone dams to pool and direct streams of water into heavily shaded parts of valleys above a given village. During winter the pools become thick ice masses - frozen water tanks for farmers who need reliable summer flows as a hedge against changing weather patterns.
Some people have done glacier growing for a long time:
http://www.umb.no/statisk/noragric/publications/master/2007_ingvar_tveiten.pdfQuote:
People in the districts of Baltistan and Gilgit practice 'glacier growing' with the intention of
making glaciers that will enhance water availability. This is done by carrying glacier ice from
a naturally occurring glacier up to elevations over 4000 m a.s.l., where it is placed in a dug
out cave in a scree-slope. Apart from the ice, gourds containing water are also added to
interior of the cave. Then a layer of charcoal, and sawdust or wheat husks is put on top of the
ice. The workers close off the cave by piling up rocks to cover the entrance.Lastly, by growing many glaciers, you can affect the albedo of a mountain, or even a mountainous region and thus affect local climate. Darker mountains absorb more heat and thus lose ice faster, reverse that by making more glaciers and other glaciers could appear without you having to make them directly.

Re:Photos from the same spot but not the same seas
They can change relatively rapidly with some human help. Either shrinking or in the following cases growing:
As of this year he has built 10 artificial glaciers, using a simple system of pipes and stone dams to pool and direct streams of water into heavily shaded parts of valleys above a given village. During winter the pools become thick ice masses - frozen water tanks for farmers who need reliable summer flows as a hedge against changing weather patterns.
The first one he built was in 1987; it is now two kilometers long and provides supplemental water to four villages. "In four months you can have one million cubic feet of ice," said Norphel, who won a CNN-IBN "Real Heroes" Award in 2008 for his work.

Re:15 minutes or 15 seconds?
Apparently 15 minutes: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/5614609-meteor-stands-still-for-15-minutes-in-iowa-pictures
Another thing
... where is the substantiating claims in that article? It's just some guy claiming it.There are no links to any other reports, no pictures to substantiate the claim, nothing.
In other news, people in Iowa have seen purple flying pigs carrying off an SUV.

Re:15 minutes or 15 seconds?
Apparently 15 minutes: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/5614609-meteor-stands-still-for-15-minutes-in-iowa-pictures
People of Iowa and neighboring cities were surprised by a meteor shower on Wednesday night. The fireball resembling meteor is captured in a picture by an Iowa resident - that is believed to be a part of the meteor shower. This meteor wasn't like a flash - it appeared at 10 p.m. and stayed there for good 15 minutes!
According to the National Weather Service, the meteor was moving from west to east and before it reached the horizon, it broke up into smaller pieces and was lost from sight. Iowa was not the only place where this meteor was seen, but Wisconsin, Ohio, Missouri and Indiana also witnessed the fireball. It is still not confirmed by experts what caused the meteor fireball to stay in the sky like that or whether it would have hit the ground or not. It was definitely an exciting site in Iowa.

There is an article on it....
Here is an article written by a friend on it.
net neutrality
it doesn't actually seem like a net neutrality issue to me.
It seems like corporate sponsored censorship.
I am confused
I probably need coffee -
And in an odd twist
I thought a lot more about ethics when I was 20 then I do now.... of course I was also a liberal... ahhhh how things change!
p.s. Just joking... but only about one part.
Same story different twist -
F*&(ing FARMVILLE!
Great,
I blame farmville, all that trading about of farm animals.
It used to be that a man's sheep where a man's sheep... and you did not touch another man's sheep.
But, there you go... all this willy nilly trading of farm animals was bound to have a bad end!
Spurious link:siRNA and protein synthesis video with stupid article I wrote attached -
Now, see the video
I have two videos (stolen..... er... borrowed from youtube) that show how siRNA works and protein synthesis.... as a little refresher.
the link is : siRNA + Protein Synthesis, with article attached :P -
Re:Too small a sample size
It may be a small sample size, but man this is cool stuff.
From TFA, the siRNA can stop any mRNA produced protein.
Eventually, this could be huge for treatments of diseases and conditions associated with mutated proteins.
Before, they had the siRNA, but no real way to deliver them.
So, this is a double wammy!
There is a story with a video about this and siRNA
In fairness, I wrote the story, and found the video... but it I think it is very cool. -

Aliens Already Did This
The scientists behind the £4.4bn atom smasher had already received threatening emails and been besieged by telephone calls from worried members of the public concerned by speculation that the machine could trigger a black hole to swallow the earth, or earthquakes and tsunamis, despite endless reassurances to the contrary from the likes of Prof Stephen Hawking.
Why is it that wherever progress goes, controversy follows?

I don't use any of the applicationsI got burned once too many times by crappy idiotic third rate nonsense "applications" on facebook. Someone sent me a kiss, so I sent one back, but I had a bunch of windows open and didn't notice that I had just sent a kiss to EVERYONE. Now they all know I love them, that's no big deal, but it's the assumption of broadcasting and the will to spam itself that I find offensive about facebook.
So, one day, I just sat down and yanked most of the applications out. so, if you send me something on the Funwall, sorry - I won't be seeing it. And if you have some dorky movie compatibility quiz, I won't be playing the game. If you want to contact me, there's a facility for sending messages and comments. If you can't get put enough words together to do that, then you're probably not one of my friends, anyway.
Facebook has outlived its usefulness.
Perhaps something like allvoices.com will be the next big thing because there, you have to do something - contribution to the data matters more than just being a consuming node for a data mine.
