If you don't like it, just use Altavista's text only search page. It has less images than google even. This used to be my primary search engine (since around 1996 or so), but now I use google with this as a backup.

But if you look at Altavista in 1996, before the big portalization, you'll still see a bit more clutter than you see on Google. And, Excite in 1996 is far from clean. I can't remember Excite any earlier because I don't think I ever used it much. I was a devoted AltaVista user until they stopped/slowed indexing new sites, portalized it, and just made it not worth using. Then I found Google, and it became my new home page.

You can not deny, however, that Teoma, HotBot, AllTheWeb, AltaVista and WiseNut have all been influenced by Google's successful design. You don't need to invent something to make it popular.

This is certainly true, but have you been to Altavista lately? Yes, the king of annoying pop-up-pop-under-blinking-shit-distract-me-in-any- way-possible-steal-my-bandwidth-animated-gifs-and- flash-crap has adopted another look & fell. And guess whom they got "inspired" of... And then we have all the other wannabe-Google-copycats out there. Well, let's see it from the positive side: Clean is beautiful, once again. Good for us users.

That's because Google doesn't do boolean searches. It will ignore the or (too common a word) and ends up treating it like an and search.

I sincerely hope that whever moderated the parent "informative" will get what they deserve.

First, Google supports limited boolean operators, consisting of exclusion (using '-'), forced-inclusion of stopwords (using '+'), phrases (words in double quotes or separated by other punctuation marks) and ORing (using 'OR' or '|').

It also supports "wildcard words", which lets you approximate a "NEAR" search.

Finally, more customization is available using documented and undocumented (julian date and phonebook - residential and business) operators.

However, when their their 10-word limit is combined with the absence of stemming, real wildcards and real boolean expressions, you may want to check the competition.
