As much as I don't like javascript too, I like very much how http://math.stackexchange.com/ supports the math rendering engine MathJax. And along with UTF-8 support I think that we need the ability to discuss difficult topics using math to describe them.

It occurs to me that if they didn't let people moderate except from beta, they could effectively stifle opposition.

Then we would all move to altslashdot.org even faster.

Will soon be hosted at AltSlashdot.org or a site linked through that domain.

It will be for the commenters, by the commenters.

It will be like the old days when Slashdot at least spell-checked the summaries and made sure the links actually worked.

To be clear, I looked at the Beta site and am in line with the general thinking. Having been a /. member since 2000 there is something solid about the look and feel that has not changed much in over 14 years. Clearly the beta site is trying to look like other sites (presumably held by Dice?) and it does not work (or look good).

I made my comment before I read some posts that advocated a protest/boycott. How funny though, with all the "we need to boycott" statements i've read in /. over the years taht was met with "grow up, boycotts don't work", here is now one called on the fertile soil of /. ... will this one work?

I'm going otu on a limb and say, boycotts never work unless you can truly convince the vast majority to join in and I'm guessing that demographics of /. have changed. Current owners figure they can weather the storm.

As for me, I may check out this very young upstart I just read about here on this site. Though I'll hang with this ship for a bit, I'll check out the upstart and at the least, add my voice (I cannot help code as I don't do python).

Also how much of a payload can one missile really carry? Not much, good only for targeted strikes.

Indeed, there is everything wrong with it an nothing right. They're trying to replace the Shire with the Two Towers and they expect us hobbits to just go along?

Someone is already building an alternate, I've signed up for an account... we'll see. It will be really hard to make it suck worse than slashdot beta.

Change for the sake of change is stupid. Unless they change their minds, slashdot will be the new k5.

Some folks are working on a new slashdot. It looks like they're using wikipedia code right now, the page says they're converting to slashcode. No content there yet. I opened an account this morning.

Strange. I'd say you're trolling, but you have a low count six-digit user ID. I'll choose to treat you as misinformed.

You say that we are powerless. I disagree. I intend to boycott. Should that fail, I'll leave for another site... which is already in the making. (I might frequent both if both can survive. There are other IT sites after all.) That is the power of my choice.

As for power the of Slashdot, it comes from the community -- people like you and me. If enough people boycott, the quality of Slashdot will be seriously affected for a week. It will be interesting to see the results.

It is rude to randomly redirect visitors to beta.slashdot. Even more so because beta sucks.

Providing a hard to find opt-out, adding /?nobeta=1 to the url, just upgrades the aggravation level from "rude" to "insulting and infuriating". The only acceptable option is, as always, opt-in.

I guess you need reminding. a lot.

that's why everybody's heading to this page to talk about what our options are if DICE refuses to hear us.

One thing is missing from these boycott calls: a means of communication before, during and after the proposed boycott. Without such a means of communication nobody will know whether the boycott is successful or not. At the most they'll head for /. - thereby negating the effect of the proposed boycott - to see whether it is as empty as intended.

It would be nice, but there is no requirement to discuss before, during, and after. Either Dice fixes what they are doing and the majority stay (some have already left over this) or people build their own Slashdot-like website. I'll come back on the 18th and look around. I'll know if things are back to normal or if they addressed the problems. If things really go south here, check out one of the other alternative slashdots that are being worked on. It will take some time for this to finish shaking out.

In fact, do to incessant whining I've decided I really like Beta quite a bit and can we keep it just as it is? I'm going to fight hard for Beta now just because I know it pisses you off.

I already responded once to you but I had to reply to this comment: I'm in support of both the beta and the classic. I personally hate the beta and prefer the classic, but there is no technological reason why they can't run side by side. I know there are some people who like the beta. That's ok. It's their cup of tea. There is no reason why either needs to be taken away.

Before you say I'm contradicting myself in my signature, I'll also say that I merely picked up the "Fuck Beta" line because it was being forced down my throat in broken form. If they have plans to actually fix it (which they say they do but I'm not convinced of for reasons I won't get into here), I'm interested to see the finished product as are a lot of other people.

Consider this: if beta worked, you could just close the "petty vendettas" easily. (It's one of the things we're complaining about.) Most of the threads spawned pretty much had separate threads for beta and on-topic stories. I thought that separation was pretty amazing considering no one organized that. Yes, there were cross overs, but it wasn't that bad.

No matter what, I think you'll get your wish in a day or two and you can be happy. There's going to be a boycott and you can read your articles without interference. After that, things will go back to normal or become a ghost town.

(Yes, the editors responded, but they did not address all of the issues, so you're still going to see some noise for a day or two.)

Groklaw and Slashdot served two different needs. I'm not sure you can combine them, although in all honesty, I did not use Groklaw nor Technocrat.

Well, those few needed tweaks never stop piling up. On top of that, UX research and (more importantly) user expectations continue to evolve.

To keep up with that, websites either need to constantly change in small increments, or to do it in big chunks. We'd been doing the former for a while, but the decision was made to start fresh. I totally understand how jarring it is to see such a huge amount of change all at once, but we also have to look at what the website will look like a few years down the road.

The classic design in 2014? Not too bad. The classic design in 2018? Probably not going to cut it.

An old boss of mine used to say (and he said it at least six times a day -- it was very annoying) that "when the pain to change is less than the pain to stay the same, people change."

Let's review. The pain caused by a redesigned site with less functionality and more broken functionality is much greater than the pain to use the existing site. So don't wonder why you're seeing so much pushback.

I strongly recommend that the dev team re-label Slasdot Beta as Slashdot Alpha rev 0.3 or something similar. Don't call it beta until the important features are complete. In case you're wondering what those features might be, they are smooth and complete support for comments and moderation. Usability is key and based on the testing that's been going on, clearly that's an issue with the new design.

Please take the hint. I like /. and would like to continue using it. But if you make the pain to change greater than finding somewhere else to go, I'm outa here.

As an aside, many of your users could do a much better job in less time than the folks you've got working on this. That should scare you. Something about altslashdot.org, I think.

Hey, how about posting an article with some statistical analysis of the feedback you've been getting? If it shows up on the front page, maybe you might get the right idea. Because AFAICT, management isn't getting it.

After looking at how dice.com sells slashdot http://slashdotmedia.com/about... it's not hard to guess that the whole redesign is just for revenue purposes. And a good looking site just sells better to media morons.
I'm doubtful that the boycott will work but it's a good way of giving dice the finger.
Also there are two options that will work of getting slashdot back. First is to build a new site, which is was OkianWarrior suggests: http://altslashdot.org/
