plus, AMD is in trouble
Look, if you give an credence at all to the idea that corporations look as far into the future as they can and attempt to the limits of their ability to arrange that future so they control as much of it as they can, then it's worthwhile thinking about what Intel is gunning for here.
IT also helps to remember that the direction of corporations are decided by a small circle of individuals who all , uh, know each other.
What they want is a world in which there are no *smart* terminals , just dumb ones whose owners are forced to offer up all their data to "the cloud" for processing and , um... examination.
Giving people serious computing power was the worst thing to ever happen in the eyes of people who want to have all the power all the time. Intel is one of those "people" and the people who work closely with Intel to plan the future are also of like mind.
The general purpose computer , not to say computing. is just too powerful to be given over to just anyone. They want to backpedal on this, but need to make that backpedaling look like "progress". So we have "cloud computing" and the planned demise of powerful, general purpose CPU chips under the control of individuals. Helps if you wipe other chip makers off the face of the earth through unsavory and illegal business practices also. Intel has a decades long history of such.
http://ftc.gov/opa/2010/08/intel.shtm
about a quarter of the way down the page:
http://www.amdzone.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=137874
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel#Competition.2C_antitrust_and_espionage
and so on for as long as you care to look.
If you care about owning general purpose computers, just don't buy Intel chips. AMD chips are more than fast enough for everything including all your games. That's the solution. Intel depends on you more than you depend on them.... so far.

Re:And Intel has a trick up their sleeve
You know deep down this is bullshit... right? I mean, most ARM designs offer multiple instruction sets anyway! The power costs of this are way way overstated - especially today
Ah, I don't think you're right about that. Have you looked at the amount of x86 die consumed by instruction translation? Here it's about 20% of the die not counting cache and I doubt Intel does it any better. Plus Intel keeps lathering on new, incompatible instruction sets like a kid in a candy store. The cows are now coming home on that one.

MPAA's Three Strikes
Strike 1: http://gizmodo.com/329648/mpaas-university-toolkit-taken-down-for-violating-copyright
Strike 2: http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-steals-code-violates-linkware-license/
Strike 3: http://www.amdzone.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=95638BOOM!
No more MPAA! They're offline forever! After all, the law is just and equal and fair and blind, right? And the MPAA -- the people who, let's face it, basically *wrote* this law -- should be held to the highest standard themselves. They, more than anyone else, cannot call it a youthful mistake, or a silly error in judgement, or ignorance or anything else... they have zero excuse and so accordingly they will be punished for their obvious and flagrant transgressions!
Right?
... right? -

Re:What Crack are they smokin there?
Here is a link thats shows the Woodcrest is only 2% faster than Opteron socket F. The article states Opteron is actually faster when you ramp up the amount of ram. Its possible Woodcrest will not be faster for 98% of the apps out there. AMD still has Rev. G (65nm) and the K8L that will help boost performance and could prove the better server processor. If this benchmark is a true representation of what AMD has to come, Dell is trying to jump on the bandwagon early. Hopefully more benchmarks will be released to reveal the truth. http://www.amdzone.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&fi

Re:Uneven Benchmark
There is also Quake4 SMP beta patch that improves frame rates significantly if you have a dual core. ~50% improvement with SMP Patch.
-
Re:Uneven Benchmark
if they'd run 2 quake4's at the same time on the machine, the results would be interesting
That would be true, if not for the fact that Quake 4 is multithreaded.
So are Oblivion and Serious Sam 2. -

Re:Better for games, still.
Virtually all games are single-threaded, but a surprising number of them released recently are multithreaded.
Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2 are both multithreaded via patch, thanks most likely to their development on the XBOX 360.
Serious Sam 2 also ships with multithreading support.
That's a whole lotta big-name multithreaded games for winter 2005. I expect many more next year. -

RAID does not improve gaming performance - stats
RAID will not make your games *run* faster. Games are entirely CPU and graphic bound, and disk performance has no impact. RAID *will* shave off a 1-2 seconds off your map load times, maybe. http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?op=modload&nam

full id keynote coverage
another rejected submission with full details including the announcement about source submitted last night.
http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?op=modload&name =Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=169&pag e=1
It is another hot August in Texas, and that means Quakecon. The highlight is always the id presentation topped off with programmer and rocketeer extraordinaire John Carmack's chat with the audience. We will find out more about Quake 4 including viewing the E3 trailer. We will find out about what Carmack thinks of the hype surrounding the next generation consoles. John will also reveal how he feels about current CPU and GPU technology. The benefits and challenges of multithreading will be covered as well his thoughts on dedicated physics cards. Also don't forget about the latest on Armadillo Aerospace, what car John is driving, and why he thinks cell phone gaming in the next year or so could be where we find our next new gaming genre from. Hold on as we dig in deep to another information packed id Quakecon presentation and the first live John Carmack game tech talk and Q and A session since 2002. -

We also have links to all AMD pages on their site relating to the case here.
We have followed this story for years, and have recently cited the lack of AMD desktops in Best Buy as recently as 11 days ago, and we will be following this story much more closely and accurately than groklaw. -

dodgey? duane has been around since 98, like we have. how the fuck is it dodgey? the 57 will be the fastest in gaming, but not much faster than the x2. why? because the clock is not that different. same fucking conclusion I had when I did my fx57 preview last week. maybe you should do some research before you start typing. clearly you have not.

Re:No word yet...
I would be real surprised to see these being dual core particularly with all the problems they are having cooling the single core parts and getting them to 2.5GHz. If you want dual core for servers then you should be looking at the HP dual core Opteron blades that are for sale now. Yes, this is not some Intel paper launch. Vendors are selling them a week prior to the official release. It is also the 2 year anniversary of the Opteron as well.

Re:Don't get *too* excited yet...
driver support has increased vastly. driver support was the main reason the os had not shipped. it will include more drivers than have been released to date. of course, what do i know? i post every damn 64 bit driver for linux or windows or freebsd that comes out, and you can search for them here.

Failed 64-Intel Attempt
I think your right. I have seen benchmarks on the AMDzone forums which show that while AMD gets a speed boost (on average) from 64-bit mode, Intel takes a performance hit (again, on average) when in 64-bit mode.
Intel is just trying to be compatible with AMD64. They won't have a serious product for another quarter or two (or three). -
Re:Why are we still married to clock speed?
Half Life 2 is extremely CPU-intensive. See this link: http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?op=modload&nam
e =Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=88&page =1
It scales very, very well with increased GHz, most likely due to the Physics engine. -
Re:Considering...
I'll say it again, using the GeodeNX series of chips for anything other than a specific set of embedded applications is a waste of time and resources.
Why? It seems like 6-watts and 1 Ghz for the "AMD Geode NX 1500@6W" makes for a really nice chip. The price on this chip was $65 each for 10K back in May. This does not seem bad. Why is this chip a waste of time? -

Re:Wrong...
Itanium is being pushed increasingly into higher end computers. You know why Itanium is important?
I'm afraid you are quite incorrect.
Power970 cpu limit: 2-4 cpus
Opteron cpu limit: 8 cpus
Itanium cpu limit: 512 cpus.
A system builder is not limited by the processor architecture in how many processors can be added to a single system. If a company were willing to throw enough money at it, you could have a 32-way i386. It would be rather inefficient, as the i386 is not designed to make SMP systems efficient and easy to implement, but it could be done.
The limiting factor is the interconnect logic between the CPUs (and in software land, the OS).
The Opteron is in no way limited to 8-way systems; that is just the point at which a designer must add their own interconnect logic between the CPUs, because the 8xx series of Opterons "runs out of" Hypertransport links.
In fact, Sun Microsystems and Serverworks are collaborating on the creation of a 16-way and 32-way Opteron chipset".
For example that 2nd ranked "top500" computer is a 20 machine Beowolf style cluster. Each machine has 512 cpus.
Further, I would argue that the "Top500" list is fairly meaningless, because the only test they use to measure "performance" is Linpack. All Linpack does is solve linear equations and linear least-squares problems. You'll notice that Xeon systems are much faster than Opterons in this test. This does not model the real world, where Opterons have a clear performance lead in almost everything you can throw at them.
There was a discussion about this on StorageReview.com about this time last year. You'll notice the last post in the thread is to an article describing the inadequacy of the current supercomputer benchmarks, and an announcement that they plan to completely overhaul the system by 2006.
Not that you were defending the legitimacy of the Top500 list per se, but it was brought up in this thread, and provided an opportunity to bitch and moan about it without creating another boring message. :) -

Who is right now?
I seem to remember a bunch of non believers trying to insult me when I said the 3rd of August was the date. I said come on, I run the Texas Gaming Festival, I go to E3 every year for AMDZone, and my brother writes for Voodoo. Perhaps you should listen to what I had said. You guys didn't. I'm awaiting your apologies. Anyway, this opens us up to have our Doom III tourney as we had planned at TXGF Summer 2004 Dallas the weekend before Quakecon. Sweet.

Re:Just get...
Sure, if you are happier not only with liquid radiator cooling, and also having to have copper heatpipe cooling. That is right as I have discovered here Apple has had to implement not one, but two separate cooling solutions for their 2.5GHz PowerMac G5. What were you saying again? You do realize don't you that you will be able to swap out a single core dual Opteron system with two dual core CPUs and have Quad CPU power don't you? And that makes the G5 an advantage how?
-
for additional AMD dual core story links
you can find them all here. It seems news has gotten around, and that AMD's dual core will consume just about as much power as a single core CPU at 90nm.

The only CPU roadmap that even shows these, let alone within the next 2-3 years, is the PowerPC. With the Xbox2 going PowerPC, and .net being CPU indepdendent...nah.
