Zoo keeper mauled to death 'after defecating on tiger'
A young Chinese tiger keeper has been mauled to death after apparently trying to defecate on one of his big cats.
The 19-year-old appears to have climbed the railings of the Bengal tiger cage and pulled his trousers down.
Evidence at the scene of the death at the Jinan animal park included toilet paper, excrement and a trouser belt.
Zoo officials think Xu Xiaodong either slipped into the cage or was pulled in by one of the four angry tigers.
According to the South China Morning Post, the man told a co-worker he needed to go to the toilet but police were called when he failed to return.
They found his body lying on the ground surrounded by tigers. The teenager had reportedly been bitten in the neck and was covered in blood.
Police believe Xu climbed the wall of a partially constructed building used to raise the tigers to relieve himself. They said the smell probably caused the tigers to pounce.

Re:Not that simpleAuthors would sue others for having a book with the same plot line.
Like the author of "Tanja Grotter" was sued by the author of "Harry Potter"? And lost because the plotlines were too similar? See here for example...
Actually I'm more inclined that this was a case of seriously fucked up justice, but it goes to show that it _does_ happen.

Copyright Infringement / Advice to RolandCopyright infringement and theft of someone else's work is a serious matter. (I'm posting as AC because the last time I posted about this issue I got tons of hate email).
This sidebar contains a photograph of a student waltzing with the robot
First off, it's not a sidebar to either of the articles linked. It's a link to Roland's weblog.
Roland: Don't be a weblog spammer -- that's what it is you're doing -- by telling us the link is one thing (a sidebar to an article) when it's actually another (your weblog).
Copyright infringement like what Roland did by stealing this photo for his blog is a big reason why we're seeing much more aggressive actions by copyright holders. Couldnt he just have linked to the Ananova story and told us there is a picture there? Or if he was really desperate to get traffic to his weblog (although I'm not sure why -- Blogdex / Daypop / Google rankings? A paid gig like Salman Pax?) he could have easily linked to the image at Ananova or any other site thats carrying the AP photo.
Since Roland is from France, a country with a long history of respecting artistic works (even quasi-artistic commercial ones like the AP photo), I would have expected that he would have the decency not to rip the photo off. I'm sure the photographer would appreciate getting credited with his own work.
A completely separate piece of advice: the best way to get people to read your weblog is to add something of value such as insightful commentary - I don't see any of that on your weblog.
Stealing someone else's content and tricking the Slashdot crowd into clicking on the link is a great way to get a bad reputation as someone who is sleazy and manipulative.

Trend?
As reported here this happened almost exactly a year ago with one of their ground based robots. That one tried to attack a car.
I can just see it:
Prof Noel Sharkey - "Get down here this minute!"
Halloon - "I'm sorry Noel, I'm afraid I can't do that." -
Saddam's Connection...

Something else to check out
Basically a virtual newsreader done through animating a talking head as part of a text to speech engine. The subtlety is that it does content and context analysis to determine an appropriate mood; watch her go serious when talking about road traffic accidents, for example. It's not perfect ("fighting for their livs in hospital"), but given that it selects stories off the news feeds and TTS and renders them 24/7 with no human interaction at all, I find it fairly impressive.
You wouldn't know it from their marketspeak site, but the company behind it ( http://www.digital-animations.com/ ) are working on expanding the content analysis and tying it to an animation library, with the goal of being able to select appropriate models and act out arbitrary text with minimal human interaction, and eventually do a basic render of a complete film from a (slightly marked up) screenplay.
Heh, I'd like to see what they'd make of a screenplay of Tron. A computer generated version of a film about a computer generated world. Sweet.

More info from New Scientist and others
A bit more info from a previously submitted post:New Jupiter-like Planet Discovered in Sol-like system
A new Jupiter-like planet has been discovered in a circular orbit around a Sun-like star 90 light-years away in the constellation Pupis. What is remarkable about the discovery is that this system is the most like our own solar system discovered to-date. This development lends credence to the theory that systems with small, rocky Earth-like planets are out there. ''This is the closest we have yet got to a real Solar System-like planet and advances our search for systems that are even more like our own,'' said UK team leader Hugh Jones of Liverpool John Moores University. Jones went on to say that, ''Jupiter's position is probably crucial to the distribution of other planets in the Solar System.'' Current thinking on planet-formation indicates a large, Jupiter-like planet in a circular orbit would allow the relatively undisturbed formation of an inner system of smaller Earth-like planets. The newly discovered planet is about twice the mass of Jupiter with an orbit equivalent to the asteroid belt in our own solar system.

Re:I think it's sunny...I wonder what he thinks about spam that promises that Bill Gates will send him money if he spreads the spam to all his friends.
The latest version promises free trips but the only thing that's gone around the world so far is the spam.
The email claimed that BA and Microsoft were tracking the email, and for every five people that recipients forwarded it to, they would receive a free return flight to London from any destination in the world or, if flying from London, to any Asian destination.
If the email was sent to 10 people, there was the opportunity to fly around the world free.

Re:wrong patent number
I believe you are mistaken.
The wheel has been patented by an Australian.
Check it out at Ananova Report
The patent no for those interested is #2001100012. -

the value of Marvel characters
Another likely reason for this? The success of the movies has opened Marvel characters for use in video games. The Xmen gamnes, the new hulk game, the Spiderman game. And also, late last year, Marvel licsensed all it's characters for a MMORPG. See link: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_674405.html?

A cute animal story for you:Zoo keeper mauled to death 'after defecating on tiger'

Windows != XBOX
Windows has near-zero marginal cost. Even at only $50, Microsoft still makes a profit. $50 is a very good deal on Windows, so if that's your goal it's good advice. But buying Windows at $50 to 'screw da man' is silly. It's damn near impossible to sell Windows at a loss. According to this and other stories, windows could be sold at $28 and still not lose MS any money.

The OED has its problems too
The latest OED also seems to have trouble with adding some slang terms that are obscure or will quickly vanish from common use.

Better Articles
Boy, that MSNBC article was bad. They even mispelled the researcher's name. It is "Akiko Mizutani" not "Aikiko Mizutani".
Here is some better coverage of the story. discovery, NationalPost, and Ananova.
And here is a nice page from the Insect Vision, Navigation and "Cognition" Laboratory at ANU, but it doesn't cover the dragonfly work. -
Re:Medium reliability
don't get me wrong im all for using mp3 as a backup for the vinyl but doesn't software like this does encourage the user to replace the wax for the mp3 ?, in some peoples eyes if i have a digi copy there is no need for me to keep the vinyl any longer therefore discarding a potentially more reliable medium for a less reliable one (if CD rot
,magnetic reliability) etc is
using both ie backing up the vinyl onto mp3 so i do not need to wear out the vinyl is a great idea but alas i fear people will choose to replace rather than backup
interestingly enough the BBC have had trouble with videodiscs where the technology has become so old they cannot read them, lets hope the same doesnt happen to MP3 -
More like these...I wonder how many cases of misidentification go unrecorded?
We only hear about stupid cases like sending speeding fines to an 18 mph mechanical horse and a toddler (although only the toddler actually ended up in court).
However, the information they gather might help detect these mistakes, if the same number plate is spotted in two different places.

That's not what I said...
Ahhh, but I didn't say completely get rid of defence did I? Nup. What saddens me is that so much money is spent on it... Now what are the main reasons for the need for defence? Leaders deciding they should invade other countries, impoverished nations being taken advantage of by the rich and violent, Holy crusades against those not of the same beliefs...
How about, let's say... 1/2 of their current budget is spent on some worthwhile things, like... feeding those who are starving, educating those who have no schools, giving people the information and the ability to stand up to these types of things...
Now if you're thinking "That money won't make a difference", think about this...
The current US defence budget is $US359 billion, with it possible reaching $US480 billion in the next decade (source). Now, the World Food Programme fed 77 million people in 82 countries at a cost of $1.74 billion in 2001 (source) ... so... let's see... if we have HALF of the current US defence budget to spend on feeding people... we could feed... let's see... 4.056 BILLION people... and seeing as though the entire world population is around 6.3 Billion (source)... and not all of them are starving.
So, we could feed 2/3rds of the world's population using just HALF of the current US defence budget.
Now, surely, that's got to make a difference to the amount of anger and suffering in the world, and conversly reduce the amount of violence? Surely. -
Ah, good timing.
I just got done reading another article about this exact same thing.
Check it out here.
There is a lot of stuff not covered in the article posted to slashdot.
