Re:Awww, Microsoft is so sweet
I run Firefox 0.9 on a remaster of Damn Small Linux 0.8.2. I don't need much of a hard drive, especially if I use a usb pen drive for the restoration of my personal setting for this Live CD OS. Can't afford Microsoft products, so I have to make my own...

This is crass advertising.
How many times has Sean (the straight male who started and runs the site, while pretending that it's a queer-friendly, woman run enterprise) from Suicidegirls crudely exploited Slashdot for free advertising? This is a pattern that has been happening time and time again, and it's ridiculous that the moderators here haven't realized it.
Suicidegirls is not a DIY, woman-run project. "Missy" is their PR point-person, who gives a progressive, friendly face to an otherwise pretty sleazy operation. The site is actually owned and run by a guy named Sean Suhl (public knowledge, not saying anything new here), who is not exactly the most progressive guy on the planet. His politics are solidly right-wing (although he's a neo-conservative, who are more libertarian when it comes to sex... as long as someone can make money from it). Dozens of models have quit or been kicked off the site, many of whom were basically removed for being too "opinionated".
Ultimately, Suicidegirls is the Hot Topic of alternative porn. They took an underground, DIY concept, polished it, and presented it slick and packaged back to the community that created it. You can read more about it in the SGirls community on Livejournal:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/sgirls
As a disclaimer, I'm not anti-porn. I'm a big fan of any porn that is sincere, DIY, and woman-oriented. There's a whole slew of sites, some of whom have been around longer than SG, such as FatalBeauty, ManicJane, VegPorn, along with DIY erotica zines such as State of Nature.
SG is not DIY, they don't challenge patriarchal standards of beauty, and they don't give a crap about the women who pose for the site. This attempt by Sean for cheap publicity is yet another example of the only thing SG really does well: Marketing. -
Re:Central heating for 8 hours?
One drawback to a generator is the amount of fuel that it will use. I bought one just before Frances (I live near where it made landfall), and it will consume 5 gallons in 12 hours at half power or 2600W. That really sucks when all of the gas stations are closed because they have no power or gas and you end up siphoning gas from the lawn mower, girlfriend's truck, etc. Does that happen with your typical winter storm?
Also consider building a shelter for the generator - we lost some food because I couldn't run the generator until the rain stopped (12 freaking hours later...)
If you decide to wire it directly to your breaker panel, do it right. There are transfer switches made for this application that will prevent killing linemen who aren't expecting the lines to be hot, as well as protecting all of your shit from catching on fire. Your insurance company will not pay for anything and you can also end up with some legal problems.
The first thing I did with the generator? Made coffee of course. -

Re:Gotta Love Democracy
Americans love democracy so much...they really should try it some time.
No, America shouldn't try democracy. It never was intended to be. Look at http://www.angelfire.com/pa/sergeman/quotes/dem.ht ml for quotes about what our government is, quoted by the founding fathers. For example:"We are now forming a Republican form of government. Real Liberty is not found in the extremes of democracy, but in moderate governments. If we incline too much to democracy, we shall soon shoot into a monarchy, or some other form of dictatorship."
--Alexander Hamilton
Also, the electoral process we have now is very sensible, believe it or not. If we go with a national popular vote to elect the president, then you better move to New York or California if you want your vote to count for anything. Any of the smaller states will have no voice in the election once the large states have their say. Elections would degenerate to this state after only a few elections as people become discouraged.
...now that Iraq has been "liberated", shouldn't they also be allowed to participate in the election of the "leader of the democratic free world"?
If the people of Iraq petition to become a state, and then vote to become a state (or whatever the procedure is), then they can participate. Like that will ever happen. -

Well, the answer is yes and no ...The windmill idea does work, as countless cultures the world over have proven for over 2000 years with the building of Water Wheel powered mills of all types and sizes. Here's an illustration for those more visually inclined: http://www.angelfire.com/journal/millbuilder/albu
m 6.htmlWater, flows downhill past and interacting with a wheel, which is connected to and turns a variety of mechanical contraptions to provide work. The water is replaced at the top of the run by precipitation or a natural spring (or in some cases a man-made contraption). If a natural replenishment of water, then the resulting system would be a pollution-free generator of power.
But, in your post: '... this energy would never cease to exist
...', well there we have a problem. That's not how it works. We need the water to flow downhill, the exit end of the tube must be lower than the entrance (it will not flow uphill
... well, actually it will, if the tube were small enough, but then it won't flow out ...), and then we need a mechanism to input energy into the system to move the water back up to the top of the run. The energy input in this effort is greater than the energy that is generated by the wheel (due to friction loss and a host of other less significant factors). The same holds true for my example. It is not a perpetual motion machine. The sun is providing most of the energy to move the water back to the top of the run -- more energy than we can get out. But, the sun is a good source of clean energy

I doubt Harvard made it up out of spiteYeah, academics and scientists do lean left. But I highly doubt Harvard is making things up just to hurt Bush. You're right about everything being viewed through a political prism now. It seems to me that republicans always have and that liberals are just now catching up. The national discourse is going to boil over if the mainstream media keep acting as mouthpieces for the administration. Maybe even before the election.
As for a bet, I'm not rich but I'll put my money where my mouth is. How about five bucks? If Bush wins I'll mail you a fiver before I jump off a bridge. My email address is on my (lame) page.

Re:Answer: Micro$oft is still #1 in the market.
They make sure their OS is preinstalled, and will boot up to the full GUI, ready to go. Who's going to do that for Linux? Well, there are makers out there that do, but they are not as well known as Windows, or as well funded.
The computer makers are given a generous discount on the Windows OS, as compared to what the end users would have to pay in the store for it.
I use a live-CD distro, (here) and it co-exists just fine with XP, Redhat 9 and Windows 98. I use it to get on the internet, for security reasons. With a Live CD OS, hard drive is not involved unless you want to use it for restoration of personal settings, etc.
For that, I use a USB pen drive. It is also possible to run the entire OS off the pen drive, using a boot floppy if needed. -
Re:How can I put this nicely
Don't turn your firewall off and get on Ebay. If you do, give your banker your cell phone number so he can call you about those $600.00 concert tickets that someone is trying to charge to your account. Somehow, "they" know how to get your data if you let them, especially in Windows. I use the Knoppix-based Live-CD os in the link below , and no, I won't pay you to learn to use Linux, any more than I would have paid a horse and buggy person to learn how to drive an automobile when cars were new.
Rapidweather Remaster of Damn Small Linux.
For those Linux folks interested in the details:
I'm also remastering the latest 0.8.2 of DSL, but that uses isolinux in /boot, so I have three out of four of my boxes that it won't run on, unlike my remaster in the link, that ran on almost every box within reason. -
Re:It's pretty amazing when you think about it.
Further to my post, about the intersection of humans and dinosaurs...
As this site says:
the standard long-age scenario of our evolution-riddled culture says that such encounters between pterosaurs and man have never happened, because all flying reptiles, along with the dinosaurs, allegedly became extinct some 65 million years before man came on the scene.
But what we know is:
The Sioux Indians have long told the story of the huge "thunderbird". They gave it this nickname because this flying reptile was hit by lightning and fell from the sky during a thunderstorm.
They searched for this creature and when they found it they described it as having wings almost 20 foot across. It had a long sharp bill and a large bony knob-like protrusion on the back of its head.
There are no birds that fit this description. The similarity between the "thunderbird" and the pteranodon is striking. Flying dinosaurs like the pteranodon have been found fossilized with a wingspan of 23 feet!
Pteranodon also have a large bony crest jotting off of the backs of their heads. Just as the Indians described. ...
The Indians have made many paintings and carvings of this dinosaur with accuracy that can only come from seeing the creature first hand.
And you can see this in a picture from a Canadian Indian tribe:

White vinegar
This may sound as a joke but white distilled vinegar is faboulos for such things. I once had a car at work, and the one who had used it before me probably used to smoke (a lot) in it. Some one told me to levave a cup of white vinegar in it during weekend. I tried it, and to my surprise, next monday the smell was gone!

Re:Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics
I use it on my Toshiba 4015CDS, running my remaster of Damn Small Linux I built in Foxfire 0.8, and now I don't use Win98 that came on this box. I do have Firefox on that, with a software firewall, but this is better, and easier on the hard drive too. The remaster loads up into ram in a minute or so, then all is quiet as I surf the 'net with Firefox. Windows 98 seemed to run the hdd a lot for some reason.

Re:Excellent generall purpose coprocessorThat's the Motorola DSP5600 you're talking about.
You could get some sweet real-time full-bitrate audio effects out of that puppy. It was the only time I ever found assembly worth writing.
It actually seems a *little* odd to me that you'd use a chip designed strictly with video in mind to do something like audio processing, but why not? Actually... well, is there a reason you might not? What happens when your machine askes the GPU to do some 'normal' graphics work when you have this stuff installed? What's your regular CPU doing ( or how underpowered/unfit is it ) that you wouldn't just use it? I'm going to guess you wouldn't ideally want to have some game like UT2004 dropping frames so you could get an echo effect... so maybe this would just be something to do instead of buying a DSP board?
I'm really curious... who'd be using this, and why would they go this route instead of buying special-purpose hardware? Don't get me wrong, it's super cool, it just makes me wonder...

Unwired City?
Ah, Philadelphia, my home town. I went to attend one of the 80211-planet.com Wi-Fi shows there a few years ago. The conf was pretty small compared to all of the other shows I've been to. Thank goodness that's changed. We did quite a bit of wardriving, a snipplet of which you can see here. Since then, Wi-Fi coverage has exploded, which you can see here and for your area.
Of course, the pansy-assed white folks there can't cook, there are still a few places to get a decent meal. -
Re:Let me ask everyone here...
you gotta have some movies to watch to kill time while on a 12 hour shift
Whew. I'm glad the people in charge of defending my country are watching DVDs on their watch. I will sleep better tonight.
You should. No one can stay attentive for 12 hours without some form of entertainment. Your brains will decide that since there's nothing to do, there's no point in wasting energy, and start pulling you towards sleep mode. Bored watchmen are unobservant watchmen.
Of course the proper solution is to have a maximum of 4 hours watch, not DVD movies.
Still, when I was in the (finnish) army, we didn't have DVD's on our watch. All we had to entertain ourselves with was the army regulation book. You know you're bored silly when you find the army regulation book an interesting and envigorating read
:).Once I transferred to a coastal navy base, all that changed. Now we spent the watches hand-copying soft porn. Drakuun was especially popular as a source - I suppose making a naga sexy is a worthy artistic accomplishment
:)... Pity that series has apparently been discontinued, I always wanted to see who kills whom in the end :(. -
Re:Different From The Old Days
I am going to have to disagree here. I believe its more along the lines of behaving like the jerks they are inside instead of the nice geeks they are outside. I think peoples attitudes on the internet are the way they really are, and they restrain theirselves in the real world.

Re:Ever read Watership Down?
Foo: Even rabbits can count to four!!
Bar: I've read it hrair times. Great book. If you haven't read it, go and do so.
I thought that was one of the best concepts in the book... that rabbits could only count to four, but it never caused them any trouble. The rabbit who was the runt of a large litter was called "Hrairoo", if I recall correctly. I'm surprised more folks haven't commented on this prior art... it has to be more well-known (in the real world, at least) than Gully Dwarves. -
ethym.: pigeon (fr.); dove (nl.)
Pigeons and doves are not separate things -- they're the same. In English, we have both words since we get the first from French and the second from Dutch. In American English, at least, we tend to use dove for the smaller species such as the ringneck dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea) while we reserve the word pigeon for the larger ones like the Bandtail (Columba fasciata). Biologically, however, they are all in the same family.

OK, in very small words
Once: Tie a rope between two fixing points. This is like unto your entire hard drive, with many config files interwoven. If a thread frays out of the rope, it doesn't break.
Now tie a thread between two fixing points. This is like unto your registry. If a thread frays out... it's game over.
Again: take a pile of gravel. This is like unto a pile of small files on your hard drive.
Now, carefully stack the individual pieces of gravel one atop another to build a thin, tall pillar. This is like unto your registry on your hard drive.
Take one piece of gravel from each system. Which lasts better?
Discussion: Similar principles apply elsewhere. Microsoft have a tendency to lose the plot when faced with a choice between "robust" and "shiny". They also fall victim to their own propaganda. -
Re:Limited lifetime?
If you have a good power supply, and a good source of 120v power for your computers, then your hdd should last a while. I had to put two power supplies in one machine and split the hard drives, mb, cdrom, floppy, etc. between the two.
Sometimes I have to boot into RHL 9, and have to leave both supplies on. Other times, I can just use my remaster of Damn Small linux, and after booting the box, just cut the other power supply off. This is an old box, with two processors, so I like it. I have several flash memory sticks, but have yet to put an OS on one, and use a boot floppy to run it. There has been some discussion of the limited read-write life of these sticks, although the Damnsmall folks are getting some practice with them. -

Re:We/they may be better off alone for now
I will never understand how Christians can be scientists, ever.
You might want to take a look at this then.
An interesting quote from the site: "Thus, for sixty years Utah has led the nation in per capita production of scientists. To many people, likely, the fact that a distinctive "religious" state was also notable for scientist productivity, was remarkable, a challenge for some explanation."
I don't know if it explains how Christians can be scientists, but it does show that not only Christians can be scientists, but that there are a lot of them.
(To those who object that Mormons aren't Christians, I reply that Mormons believe in the bible, which I think is the point of the OP.)
I feel that religion is bullshit. No wait, I know that religion is bullshit.
I think Agent K said it best:
1500 years ago everyone knew the Earth was the center of the Universe.
500 years ago everyone knew the Earth was flat.
15 minutes ago you knew people were alone on this planet.
Imagine what you will know tomorrow.

Re:Not Difficult to install? HA!
I tried Damn Small Linux. Had to remaster it to get it to connect to my modems on three boxes, and to include Mozilla Firefox. Most everyone nowadays want s to get on the Internet with their computer, a far cry from the days when we used Basic to write some programs that did calculations that would have been impossible or extremely boring to do by hand, and that was mostly the extent of computer use, other than writing small games, etc.
So, my remaster seems to fill the bill for me anyway, and I'm not going to try again to install Debian 2.2 or put together bit by bit, a nice Slack 8. I lost my custom Slackware when the drive motor on a hard drive burned out, so I like the "live cd" idea with DSL, even if I boot with the "toram" option. I'll let you know after I get the XP sp2 installed if I still like Windows. -
Quick and quiet death?
As has been pointed out, it's possible for a paper to lie undiscovered for decades before being revived; Mandel being the most obvious example. I'd suggest that papers didn't die; they're in hibernation.
Oh, and am I the only one that chortled at the fact that this paper, which lists the 100 most cited papers, had only 26 references? -
Re:adventure
Van Allen comments that 'the only surviving motivation for continuing human spaceflight is the ideology of adventure.'
Good enough for me.
Same here. He also attributed this belief to the incredible price (financial as opposed to the lives lost in space accidents).Of course, last I checked, that's where this comes into play.... which pretty much invalidates his entire argument... As well, achieving something like this would put a few more nails in the coffin housing this guys argument.
In short, he's right... for now, but if these things come to pass he'll be as full of shit as this guy was when he said this (beware pop-ups if you aren't using Firefox)

Re:umm....
I use XP on a Dell to manage songs on a mp3 player, but right now, connected to the internet, I use my remaster of Damn Small Linux.
I don't worry too much about windows-targeted viruses and trojans, etc.
To make bootup easier, I include an .xserverrc in the remaster for a specific machine, so I don't have to set up the X Server, Mouse and Screen stuff each time, required in "OEM" Damn Small.
Using this remaster, I save a lot of time not having to do windows updates, virus updates, etc. that seem to come up almost weekly (or more frequently) on the Dell.
I wish things were not so complicated for Windows, or I would use that box more often.
The box I'm using the remaster on has a pair of 200 mmx processors, and 256 MB ram.
It's fine like it is for web surfing and email. -
