Re:Wayback Machine
Although the Wayback Machine is really neat.
Hey... it is great fun. Here was one from 1998 announcing a new 25G drive which invited speculation on why you'd ever want a drive that big...
;-) -
Re:Ah, a Web Award that actually means something
The Way-Back Machine is beautiful for seeing what sites where like 'back-in the day.' I looked at some of the sites I used to code and cringe... It is also amusing to note that alot of the sites won't work with modern browsers due to IE/Mozilla specific tags. Ahh.. the good 'ol days.
For your fun here is slashdot on Nov 11 1998. More?
CNN on Sept. 11
Great tool for future historians. -

Re:Ah, a Web Award that actually means something
Sites can suddenly disappear or (more frequently) slowly slid into inactivity.
That's what the Wayback Machine is for. -
Not award worthy?
It's the only site of its kind! Not to mention that it has another crowd favorite on there. Boy, really takes me back.

Wayback Machine
They gave the Internet Archive an award. Interesting idea, but I feel not really award worthy. Although the Wayback Machine is really neat.
The oldest archived version of /. is interesting. December 21, 1997. My favorite headlines:
1) Linux 2.1.74 Released
2) Judge Uninstalls IE in 90 seconds
3) The poll: I would see Titanic just to see a Prequel Trailer (Yes/No/What are you talking about?)
Just goes to show how long this Microsoft crap has been going on... -
Remember when...
Slashdot was good?

Yet another "dedication" from Caldera SystemsCaldera Systems has a history of being "dedicated" to different projects that the GNU/Linux community "needs."
1) Caldera Dedication One--they declaired at 1998 Linux Kongress that there need to be a unified administration utility that works on all distributions. They stated their "dedication" to using a web site to promote community developement of their solution. What they eventually made available was poorly documented spagetti code. Rather than update the website to provide acceptable documentation of their code, they just let the web site die over two years ago.
2) Caldera Dedication two -- they next show their "dedication" to a project called Linux Standard Base. They donate the time of Johannes Peohlmann of Caldera Systems to maintain an actual minimal runtime implimentation of LSB. It never got past being pre-alpha and has not been maintained in almost a year.
3) Caldera Dedication trilogy comes to an end. Now that Caldera has shown their lack of dedication to getting a minimal runtime of LSB into an alpha level, they now take on building a full LSB with a "value add" prioritary license installer. Based on Caldera's history with "dedicating" themselves to a project, the UnitedLinux website will recieve it final update in June and the website will be unavailable for access by April 2003. I doubt the other three distributors will remain dumb enough to continue to carry the weight of Caldera empty promises when Caldera fails to follow through.

Re:Court listened to my anticensorware work!
The more I reread it and see all your posts, the more I believe his version of events to be accurate, and yours to be the result of a raving lunatic.
Sigh. If I can take a moment to defend myself, I'll answer that honestly and directly:I didn't write this:
Bennett Haselton's comments on Michael Sims' hijacking
I didn't write this:
Jonathan Wallace's comments on Michael Sims' hijacking
Are they, too, madmen? You can ask them if they wrote it.
I didn't write this, the public statement of Censorware Project:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010716063335/http://
c ensorware.net/index.htmlMike, now that the site is back up, we are renewing our request that you transfer us the censorware.org domain. You're not using it for anything, and it will continue to confuse people and divert traffic away from this, the rightful Censorware Project site.
Is that lunacy?
I keep asking these questions: Am I wrong for legal worries? What would you DO in the face of smear-attack and under such pressure? Would you, if you had such worries, act so nicely as is preached?
I never get an answer which isn't easy preaching or name-calling.
-
Re:Court listened to my anticensorware work!Read what I wrote, and the court passages I cited.
And I didn't write any of this:
Consider http://web.archive.org/web/20010716063335/http://
c ensorware.net/index.htmlMike, now that the site is back up, we are renewing our request that you transfer us the censorware.org domain. You're not using it for anything, and it will continue to confuse people and divert traffic away from this, the rightful Censorware Project site.
I DIDN'T WRITE THAT. Attacking me as a person does not rebut it. It's a public plea from Censorware Project for you to STOP your harmful, destructive, actions. You only get away with them because Slashdot gives you the reputation to continue.
This isn't a game. This isn't just-a-flame-war. People get sued. Stop being destructive.

Not planning to orbitFrom his page:
THE ROCKET GUY PLAN:
It may be a technical dream but he's just crazy enough to push that button.
The goal is to go straight up 30 miles. There are no plans for orbit, just to set the altitude record for a private citizen. Orbit requires going at least 170 miles up and going 17,000 MPH around the earth. Lots of up and lots of sideways. Going up to a straight up to a stop and dropping back down is different.

Why is VA Software trying to suppress the truth?I wonder why no VA site (including Slashdot and Newsforge) has posted the news of:
ESR's Removal from the VA Software Board of Directors!
In fact, that article on Linux Today is the only one you'll be able to find on the entire WWW.
ESR'S HOMEPAGE DOES CONFIRM THE STORY, THOUGH.
No more " [representation of] the interests and values of the open-source community [at VA Software -- owners of OSDN and Slashdot]" then, I guess!
Oh, and for further information about VA Software's demise, you may want to read this email.

InsideTruth.com had some good informationArchive.org has old copies of InsideTruth.com, so you can read what they were actually saying.
Most of their disclosures about companies seem to be based on public information. Court records are a major source. Here's a sample report, on SeaView Video Technologies.
The "inside information" from the FBI may have only been hints as to what court records to look at. Court records are public, but not well indexed. Law enforcement generally has better indexing of court records than the courts themselves. So this guy may have been using the FBI mostly as a search engine for public documents.
It's legal to issue reports on a stock that you're trading, provided that you disclose that you're doing so. That's very common, and a source of much of the hype coming from Wall Street analysts.
The press reports don't say that this guy's information was wrong.

Re:No DNS?? Huh?Ah. Right. Sorry about that. Anyway, this is interesting:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://macthis.org
Last October this was just a test site by mrbiiggy, which is the same name that's on all the screen shots on SpyMac. He lists his homepage on his profile as knite.net, which is the same as his primary DNS, and it looks like a DSL connection in Costa Mesa, CA. It's probably the same web server that was doing macthis.org, but is now down for obvious reasons. I would guess that he yanked the IP and server when his phone jack started melting. His secondary DNS was on a cable modem in New York which isn't accepting DNS connections but is still up (as far as I can tell) but I imagine knite.net is the same IP as macthis.org.
Anyway, it boils down to the fact that there probably was a site there, and just because there isn't one now is no indication that they didn't check the link before posting.

Go check out the prototype installations in D.C.Prototypes of this "sulfur lamp" technology are in place at two public places in the Washington, D.C. area, the front of Department of Energy headquarters and the Gallery Place Metro station. So get down there with your Wi-Fi equippped laptop and see what the situation is.
This looks like a niche product. It's not even clear that Fusion Lighting is still in business. Their web site is essentially defunct. Their web site used to have some nice pictures of glass bulbs and more info, but now, it's just a starter page.

Bill Gates' SSN: 539-60-5125
I found your sig a little hard to beleive, so I did some google research (and its true!).
You ought to add this link to your sig to add some legitimacy to it.
Gotta wonder why sec.gov took down Bill's ssn, but left Paul Allen's (536-58-3118) online?
Oh well, no matter, archive.org is my friend :) -
archive.org
This makes the job of Archive.org - like sites damn tough.
P.S. Are we losing information at a comparable rate to generation....? -
One of the flawsI think one of the flaws in any analysis of the decay on the web is the fact that most news sites keep an infinite archive of almost everything they have ever published online. The specific phrases probably don't represent a large enough sample size to properly reflect all sites. Sure, he says he used many phrases, but all he gives us is "bill gates sucks", "life's short play hard", "blessed are the cheesemakers", and "late at night". To properly do the study, he should've used a random word letter generator or word generator and test the decay of that.
But, it is interesting to see his results. I can only imagine that if Archive.org did a study like this, they would be able to make a more legitimate conclusion. Perhaps some collaboration is in order?

Google's collection of the data
Are google claiming that they can check through the entire internet inside a timescale of 3 months, ready to check through again at the start of the next quarter?
Surely this can't be true. Check Google's cached pages - see the dates on there?
Google is turning into another history book. -

Re:But...What an absolute crock of shit!
Warn customers that acquiring the PC "naked" exposes them to the possibility of unwittingly purchasing pirated software. Explain the risks: technical troubles, upgrade problems, viruses and the law. Politely decline to expose your buyers or their businesses to such troubles.
1: Warn customers - Yes, do warn them about buying into a monopoly.
2: "Naked" - So? You need an OS.. it's your business what you do with the hardware you purchased.
3: "exposes them to the possibility of unwittingly purchasing pirated software": Which has more pirates... those for linux or windows?
4: Technical troubles: I'm not even going to comment, after all this is MICROSOFT saying this.
5: Upgrade problems *cough* *splutter*
6: Viruses. I really can't believe microsoft, #1 willing (outlook?) distributer of viruses is saying this
7: ..and the law (says the company who calls down the law upon its customers and who's EULA is unreadable by anyone but a barister)
8: I'll translate the last bit: Tell them to buy windows or we'll stop supplying you.
Three cheers to this group and their efforts to promote Linux. I hope they convert many people to the Power that is Linux. This article has impressed me so much that I'm going to donate towards this scheme: It's a hell of a lot better than paying the annual M$ tax. Cheer's to an organisation that is 100% Microsoft Free
-
What's Microsoft going to say about this?taking donated PC's and breathing new life into them with Linux.
According to the Microsoft you're are supposed to be following the Guide to Accepting Donated PCs:
"If a company or individual donates a machine to your school, it must be donated with the operating system that was installed on the PC. "
and avoid dangers of the NakedPCs
"WHAT IS A NAKED PC?
Naked PCs are machines sold without operating systems preinstalled. Think of selling a house without a roof...selling your customers Naked PCs leaves them equally exposed. ... Acquire software from Authorized Microsoft OEM Product Distributors--your only assured source of legal Microsoft products." -

Re:(-1 wrong)

It's not very difficult at all, actually...
After ironing out issues between the Adaptec/SCSI firmware and my DVD drive, it took ~2 hours to get my Linux box playing encrypted DVD's (with a little help from the friendly people in #debian).
Basically, my process was: Bootable Debian 2.2 CD installation. apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-k7; vim /etc/lilo.conf; lilo; shutdown -r now; I don't think I needed to update my kernel, but I want USB support for later on, so it's kindof necessary. apt-get install ogle, run the included install-illegal-decss-library.sh script that it told me I needed. Run ogle from the supplied menu shortcut, open and play the DVD. Once you know what you're looking for, it's remarkably simple.
I have 200+ CD's. I had most of them MP3'd before at 192 bitrate, but now I'm using abcde with oggenc -q7 for VBR OGGfiles averaging 200-250kbps since the quality is better. I own 20-40 DVD's. I want to stuff my DVD's to my harddrive because I'm basically a geek with too much hard-drive space. :^)
I bought all my PC parts in pieces following the specifications given by those nifty Spindl3top people (hi lucas :^). Including Black Slot-loading DVD, and Black LCD display. Most of it came from directron.com, or harddrive.com. Got Quake 3 and the Matrix Orbital LCD display from linuxcentral.com. Bought all of the $9.99 linux games I could from EBGames, and some of the newer ones from TuxGames. I need to buy the 'Loki Installer' for RTCW because I bought RTCW from BestBuy since couldn't wait any longer after I finally got all my hardware talking to each other.
As a technology pragmatist, I recognize that there are a multitude of competing video container formats (mov, avi, mpg) with multiple supported codecs. I don't know which tools are mature on which platform, and what quality/stability issues remain to be ironed out, which is why I asked slashdot in the first place. :^)
Looks like I came to the right place since there are a bunch of high-quality responses and no "check google you dumbass" postings. ;^)
