Re:2002 targetsSenator Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, is widely considered to have a safe seat. While it's certainly worth keeping an eye on, especially given that the ANWR drilling, which he campaigned hard for, didn't survive the Senate, he is in pretty good shape -- he won with 77% of the vote last election, and already has about $1.4 million in the war chest for this election. you'll never guess where he got it. There aren't any serious opponents.
Schiff is a more interesting possibility. He's a rookie representative, just come from the state senate. He won in 2000 largely by spending possibly more than anyone in US history on a House of Representatives election ($10 Million (search for Schiff)). It's hard to say if he has a safe seat or not, since it's a new seat created by redistricting. Oh, and if you want another reason to dislike him, the guy he defeated went on to be chief of everyone's favourite gov't agency, The US patent office. It looks like Schiff will be facing Jim Scileppi, although you have to be skeptical of a political site hosted at attbi.com.

the end of telescope building? I don't agree.
The availability of cheap telescopes does not mean the end of amateur astronomy, it means the end of amateur telescope-building.
I don't agree. The cost of a high quality telescope is still higher than a home-built telescope of the same quality. If you build a scope yourself, it will cost you a lot of time, but most materials are available at reasonable prices. Plus, building your own telescope gives you total control over the quality and design. With some effort, you will be able to build a telescope which outperforms most commercial telescopes. You can build a telescope mostly from parts you find at a dumpster: some pieces of wood for the base, a cardboard tube, a piece of glass... Take a look at the San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers' website, for example.
People have made high-quality optical paraboloidal mirrors from scrap glass, glass candle holders, trepanned discs cut from CRT-tubes, etcetera. I have ground and polished a 7" glass disc into a shape which surface deviates no more than 40 nanometer from an ideal paraboloid. All this takes is a lot of time and patience, and some basic materials. Remember: the first telescopes were built 300 years ago.
The Amateur Telescope Making community is very much alive, try a google query with these words.
If you're interested in building a telescope, optionally including grinding and polishing your own optics, join the Amateur Telescope Makers mailing list.

I use SWiSH (http://www.swishzone.com) and the ease of use and the fun I have doing my flash pages sure beats the bucks I'd have spent on Flash. Swish is about $50.

Some format besides HTML?
Are the Apocalypse and Exegesis documents available anywhere, in their entirety, in some format besides HTML?
I would love to be able to print them out to read during the day - the office doesn't give us net access, for the most part, so the HTML-linked version is practically useless to me.

Re:OpenSource GPS Mapping (Topographical)?
I use GMT and USGS data to make topo maps for my GPS. I get the data from my Garmin eTrex Venture with GPSMan.
It's all free, but takes some work. See my page of details and examples.

LOTR didn't deserve what it got
IMO, Moulin Rouge should have gotten the Oscar for "Best Cinematography". There was some good work in LOTR, but I thought the cinematography in MR was simply stunning. Of course, I also think that Ewan Mcgregor should have gotten the nod for Best Actor, but he wasn't even nominated.
And yes, LOTR *did* deserve to win for Best Picture. However, the Academy is generally biased towards adult dramas, so it's not terribly surprising that they shafted LOTR.

Re:Okay, so maybe I'm being stupid but...
Yep, this stuff exists in one form or another already. There's been an ethernet adapter out for TiVo for awhile (TiVoNet), using a 10Mbps NE2000 clone. TiVoNet stuff
A new one, made by the same guy who makes this new AirTivo, is now shipping called TurboNet that's a 100Mbps card. TurboNet stuff
The software to support web services and everything all exist as well. ExtractStream, a video extraction piece.
Your best bet to keep up on all this stuff is at the Underground Playground section of AVS/TiVo Community's message forums.
Hope that helps!

Re:make it play vorbis
Not all MP3 player companies are using the ASIC MP3 decoders. iRiver the company that produces the CD MP3 players that Rio rebrands as their own is using ARM processors and is actively developing Ogg support for their players.
Thier New Player the SlimX is really quite neat looking, some pictures are provided here.
If you are looking for discussions about MP3/etc players I recoment MP3's Portables message board.

Scons (the build tool) is available!!!!
It looks like the winning design proposals for a config tool (autoconf replacement) and a build tool (make replacement) are not being implemented.
I don't know about the config tool, but the build tool has most certainly been implemented. The tool is called Scons, and it is much nicer to use than make. Instead of using timestamps to determine when rebuilding is necessary (which is very error prone in networked environments like NFS), it uses MD5 checksums. I encourage everyone to take a look at it.
Scons itself is based upon Cons, a build tool based on Perl.

Speed reduced to 1.5 Megabit
Anyone who was an ATT@home customer is now an ATTbi customer and faces the 1.5 Meg cap. I hate it, coming from the nice 7 Megabit @home netowrk, but oh well, it's better than dialup... More info here.

This was stated as soon as the switch went through
Here's a link to the services that AT&T promised as they were switching.
http://newuser.attbi.com/attbi_welcome_page.html#
a boutI have to say that I'm not that happy with this. One other thing they changed was the ability to use your own mail server for outgoing mail. With the problems that I previously had with @HOME mail (it NEVER worked) this is a huge change in service. I have no other alternatives for service in my area (other then paying about $1100/mo for a T1), thanks a lot AT&T!
-
Re:Mixed feelingsThat link is dead. I don't think those rules apply anymore. I'm sticking to my interpretation of the new Subscriber's Agreement.
-
Mixed feelingsI have mixed feelings about all this. We got back up today, which is not bad considering.
The minus is we lost our static IP address, which means we can't let it leak through the firewall to VPN into work anymore -- now we're back to physically bypassing the firewall to work from home.
The plus -- and it's a big one -- is the new Subscriber's Agreement. Under @Home we were not allowed to run a "server" -- any server. They did not allow http or ftp or anything else. ATTBI say:
Customer acknowledges that when using the Service there are certain applications such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server or HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) server which may be used by other persons or entities to allow such other persons or entities to gain access to Customer's Equipment. Customer is solely responsible for the security of the Customer Equipment or any other equipment Customer chooses to use in connection with the Service, including without limitation any data stored on such equipment. Neither AT&T Broadband nor its affiliates shall have any liability whatsoever for any claims, losses, actions, damages, suits or proceedings resulting from, arising out of or otherwise relating to the use of such applications by Customer, or the access by others to the Customer Equipment or other equipment of Customer.
In other words, if you run an FTP server and someone downloads your files, it's your problem not theirs. In other words, they don't care! They also say:Customer agrees not to use a dynamic DNS to associate a host name with such dynamic IP connection(s) for any commercial purpose.
But that also means you can use dynamic DNS to associate a host hame to your dynamic IP for non-commercial purposes. Way cool -- I like that a lot!But I'm bummed at losing the static IP. And myname@Home sounded better than myname@ATTBI. I just hope that I'm not forced to switch to AOL or MSN next month.

@home aup
as of 12-2-01 at 3:30am I was moved over to attbi.com but the dns servers didnt work, neither did the news server. One thing I dont get is they have 2 different AUP's for attbi and the @home customer care couldn't tell me which one that I am going by, http://newuser.attbi.com/attbi.com.ATTB_Sub_Agr.h
t ml and http://help.broadband.att.com/faq.jsp?content_id=1 107&category_id=34&lobid=1 the first listed AUP does not say you can not run a server but the second one says you cant. -
AT&T @Home reconnecting (CORRECTED)First: Oregon and Washington are the only states that AT&T is able to connect on their new network at this time. See http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/011201/n01282093_5.html
If you are in one of those two states, you will notice that your cable modem is still synch'ed up, and that any site you try and reach will take you to this AT&T page:
http://transition-aid.attbi.com/attbi_welcome_page .html
This is because you are using the OLD @home nameservers, which AT&T has replaced to resolve ALL DNS lookups to their migration help site.
The fix is as simple as it reads in the Manually Configuring Unsupported Operating Systems page
1. Fire up a dhcp client. In my case, all I needed to issue was the command:
- $ dhcpcd eth1
-
204.127.198.4
63.240.76.4
4. Change your outgoing SMTP server to mail.attbi.com instead of the *.home.com host.
And that should do it! I was actually surprised how easy it was to get back online after they made the changes. I was dreading bringing out the old 56k modem again.
Lets home the remaining states get their access back soon as well...

AT&T@Home getting re-connected HOWTO
I'm not sure it will help a lot of people, but this is what I just did to get reconnected. (Gotta feed the
/. habit.) I'm in Fort Collins, CO if that's relevant to anyone. I haven't got a phone call from AT&T yet. But that may well be on account of the phone number they have listed for me is disconnected right now.I did try sending out DHCP requests before doing this, but never got any replies. I wouldn't call this course of action exceptionally friendly behaviour. But the web sites AT&T listed in some email this past week are either unreachable or have nothing helpful.
- Listen for IP traffic coming over the modem. I did tcpdump -n -i eth0 and figured that the not-10.x.x.x router doing all the ARP requests was the neighborhood router.
- Make note of several of the IP addresses that the router continues to ask for and stop tcpdump. Also note the suspected router address.
- Set your IP address to one of the addresses from the previous step (see ifconfig(8) for help on that.) Add a default route through the router you found in the last step. route add -net default x.x.x.x )
- Hope someone follows up with a suggestion on getting DHCP working again or that you get a phone call from AT&T.
- You may well be hijacking someone else's legitimate IP address. And quite possibly violating your AUP in the process.
- Your cable modem does need to think it has a good connection to the network. Look for a set of lights glowing steadily. Or if it has a web interface, look at that. My RCA cable modem has a status page at http://192.168.100.1/
Good Luck!

@home -- attbi up in Corvallis, oregon
I got up this morning an noticed my linux box churning away on the hard drive -- turns out att rolled dhcp last night, and while a got a new ip and entries for dns servers in resolv.conf, the routes hadn't updated properly. One reboot and I'm up. For those of you that were on at&t, here's some info:
AT&T's new user page is up, and so is their help page, but who knows for how long (these were both down last night).
The new user page has the info about how to change your settings to get on attbi. If you are using windows, just use the auto config utility. If that doesn't work, or if this page goes down again, here's the info I got:
1. Use dhcp (it looks like the IP's are really dynamic now -- you get a new one every time your lease expires, unlike @home. This will be very annoying for some people, depending on how long the leases are. The lease time I got was 3600. I am assuming that is in seconds, so that's hour. Maybe they'll change this later?)
2. The dns servers I got were:
204.127.198.4
63.240.76.4
12.242.16.50
12.242.16.34
3. The mail and news servers are:
POP3:mail.attbi.com
SMTP:mail.attbi.com
news:netnews.attbi.com
4. Email is now username@attbi.com
As I am writing this, I got an automated call from at&t saying that service is up in my area.
Hang on, Seattle, I'm sure it's comming! -
I don't need Excite@Home! Die, Excite, Die!I'm a customer of AT&T@Home. I never go to the "Excite Portal", I do not use their web space, the only mail I get to the @home.com address are the bills and announcements...
How much money Excite@Home burns to maintain all that? I do not want to pay for service that I do not use; I want to have plain broadband Internet access with static (or quasi-static) IP address, and I believe AT&T will be able to provide just that.
-
Attention ATT customers who didn't get the letter
If push comes to shove and Excite@Home pulls the plug, AT&T is supposed to be putting up info on continuing your cable Internet access at attbi.com.
Of course, you would still need an Internet connection to read that Web site. Hope you saved that old dial-up modem...
