The Big Revolution?
All the backwards compatibility with NES, SNES, N64, etc. etc. A brilliant move, and one propounded by myself and Frank Leibly of http://www.starroms.com/ years ago.

Sandwich Boy Sues Nintendo
An insanely distraught Sandwich Boy today issued a flurry of fake lawsuits directed at video game giant Nintendo. At issue is software derived from this hardware. According to Mr. Sandwich, he has spent the past four months working furiously on a business plan involving the Vickie concept reborn as a software model. This software was just patented by Nintendo earlier this week.
"It's a coincidence, right? It has to be a coincidence. I know Jeffy Minter wouldn't do that to me. And there is no such thing as a shady VC firm, is there? It must be a coincidence. Regardless, I WANT MARIO DEAD! Luigi? - DEAD! Yoshi? - DEAD! I want Donkey Kong to carry out the hit."
As evidence, Mr. Sandwich offered this executive summary, conceived and developed three months ago. It is hoped that this lawsuit will bring attention to the fact that he is consistently ahead of the curve in the hardware and software development field, despite having no readily apparent skills or training.
Said Mr. Sandwich: "When my pen-sized digital slideshow generator hits the market next year, I am going to go ape spit if Newtek doesn't give me credit for the concept." -

Re:Someone's gotta say it.
Where Are They Now?
With the intense interest generated by our last featurette, BeDoper has decided to expand upon the idea, and see exactly what some of the other BeOS alumni are up to lately.
Steve Sakoman - With the dissolution of Steve's Snake Oil startup, Mr. Sakoman is currently part of our illustrious President Bush's press team.
Leo Schwab - Interestingly enough, Bols is now programming director for Columbia Broadcasting System.
Fred Fish - After lending his image to the indefatigable Freddi Fish series, Mr. Fish is preparing the Fred Fish Collection DVD, just in case this Amiga thing takes off again.
Scot Hacker - Scot is currently bringing down the house as Apple, Inc.'s resident Sigmund Freud impersonator.
Chris Herberoth - Aside from his death metal and hip-hop supergroups, Chris has declared 2003 "The year I beat Corum III".
Ynop - At this very moment, Ynop is working on top secret stuff, and getting me in trouble with my advisor at school. -

Re:Anywhere?
Zeta Torrents Oh, a new element has been added to BeDoper's underwhelming traffic: Cheeky Pirates. 50% of our hits now come from sods searching for torrid Zeta torrents. On one hand, piracy can be an indicator of success. No one pirates software that sucks. On the other hand, it's not much of a business model. One thing that seemed to differentiate the BeOS and Amiga scenes was the relatively low instance of piracy on the Be side of things. Aside from that Opera key in Serials 2000, which I hope no one used, I didn't see much by way of BeOS piracy, even on BeShare. Part of this can be attributed to JLG and Co's generosity regarding BeOS Personal Edition. So this seemingly new increase in casual piracy, which could quit possibly stifle the infant Zeta, is disturbing. If you're reading this, you're probably part of the problem. Stop it. Buy the software. BeOS has been given a slight reprieve. Don't ruin it. Torrent. Torrent Torrent Torrent.
BeDoper - Like BeDope, with fewer stories that are less funny. And also sort of bitter. -

I just hope they don't use it against me in the future...
BeDoper - We're not just about BeOS anymore. -
Major Project indeed.
First of all, I'm interested to know why the U.S. has high-resolution images of important buildings and their surroundings while they force others to pull photos and blueprints of said buildings.
That said, the Pentagon (nevermind all the other buildings used by DoD/US) is a huge building to renovate IT-wise. 9/11 didn't help either (though some believe the attack on the defense nerve center was planned).

I did some work in this area in 1998
Using a Video Toaster, SVHS deck, goggles and a color Sony security camera. I'm glad someone's developing the idea further. My approach used chromakeying, making it quick and dirty and cheap, perfect for the home market.

I even worked it into a few joke articles on BeDoper:

And not one person clicked on my URL. I may need to rethink this marketing strategy.
It is nice of Microsoft to give Linux so much publicity, though. I wish I could travel five years into the future and see what the OS market looks like then. With three more years before the next Windows, Linux should have them fully destroyed by then. -
Re:commodore made solid stuff
During the original Desert Storm, a bunch of people brought their own computers, and the military brought $10,000 wind/sand/static electricity-resistant PCs.
After a week, only the C-64s and Amigas were still working. All of the PCs, even the milspec ones, were fried.
I've seen my Amigas survive a brownout without rebooting, while all the PCs in the house went down.

I called it the Biputer, and it's just a custom video card with OS hooks.

Microsoft's Strange Obsession with Be, Inc.
May 23, 2001
http:///perl/story/9928.html
Microsoft and its leader Mr. Gates have been spellbound by Be for years.
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) apparently has Be, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEOS) on the brain. Not long ago, the Be family of operating systems was referred to as technically "great" by Microsoft representative Doug Miller in a Slashdot editorial. Miller reportedly said "BeOS is a great operating system technically." Similarly, Microsoft co-opted the code name "Stinger" for the company's new line of smart phones. Stinger is the old name for BeIA. Then Microsoft used the tractor beam on Qubit, DT Research as well as Compaq. Apparently this is business as usual for Microsoft. The company's recent escapades have me convinced that the Department of Justice was named by an Orwell fan.
Be, Inc. has been on Microsoft's radar ever since the BeBox was in beta, but I think things got really personal at the Computer Chronicle's Quiz Bowl several years ago. For those of you unfamiliar with this bit of computing history, I'll recount.
Everyman's friend Bill Gates was the moderator. A certain Jean-Louis Gassee was a competitor. The question from Gates was (and I am paraphrasing) "What is the name of the yearly contest on Usenet in which the object is to produce the most convoluted C code that still produces a working program?"
According to many, JLG's brilliant answer was: "What is Windows?" As you might have imagined, Mr. Gates was not amused.
And then there's BeDope. While not an official Be, Inc. site, BeDope undeniably reflected the attitudes of many Be, Inc. employees.
A popular site, even outside of the BeOS community, BeDope was filled with stories such as Bill Gates crashing Windows '98 during a demo, and then rebooting into BeOS for the remainder of the demo. "It would be sort of like this, except slower and less stable," he supposedly said. (Again, I am paraphrasing.)
Does anyone remember Comdex? Two of the three products nominated for Best of Show were BeIA devices: the Sony Evilla, and Qubit's Webpad, the Orbit. A few scant months later, Qubit had essentially ditched BeIA in favor of everyone's favorite performer, Windows CE.
Apparently, Qubit's new customers demanded Internet Explorer. Best of Show? Bah. A meaningless accolade, apparently. McDonald's, oops, Microsoft wins again.
Un-Clever Coincidences
Compaq was once one of the bigger partners Be, Inc. had in the Internet appliance game. The deal now seems more like a diversionary tactic, and a way to steal information. If Compaq's BeIA device foot-dragging wasn't bad enough, Compaq allegedly turned over proprietary info regarding Be, Inc. to Microsoft.
Did anything at all come of it? Why not? With partners like these, who needs enemies?
Far be it from me to suggest anything untoward about the computer industry. This is all a coincidence, right? Peapod (Nasdaq: PPOD), an online grocer, currently has a stock price triple that of Be, Inc. Hand-delivered Spam is worth much more than a technically advanced operating system, right?
If you believe that, I have some Pets.com stock I'd like to sell you.
