Nearly Free 2GB alternativeI've been using this email forwarding service for years to redirect my email to my ISP du jour.
It offers a bunch of other stuff (including a Brightmail Anti-Spam filter ) but recently included 2GB mail storage! For only about $40 per Year.
It has some search capabilities, and you can organize your folders, but I don't know how it compares to Gmail.
I have it so I don't ever have to tell all my friends or change my stationary if/when I change my ISP.
I just don't get that much mail!

Re:Its a consistant address
try bigfoot www.bigfoot.com
BAsic it redirects your emails to a email address of choice. What I do is give that one out to people I want to stay in contact with and a another address when joining something. That way I can switch ISP's in the future but not lose contacts.
The only problem with the free service is it does put a limit on the maximum number of emails, but so far I have not hit the limit.

Re:Imagine.
I've had an account with Bigfoot for years. Recently they wanted to charge me premium prices for filtering spam. I disagree with email forwarding companies trying to make a business model and charging the end user for effectively reducing their OWN wasted bandwith on what was their core business. We should not have to pay more to NOT get spam. I think some "anti-spam" people are happy to try to make money off the backs of spammers (sounds familiar?)

Still Some Bugs?
Hrm... Not quite there yet.
Searching for Microsoft and Redmond in the search and location fields yields nothing.
From Google's regular search engine I get these results.
I think they still have some work cut out for them. Granted, it's a great feature, but nothing earth-shattering, since the concept of "yellow pages" has been online for a very long time.
Some notable YP type engines that I might suggest:
- Yahoo Yellow Pages
- InfoSpace
- Bigfoot -
Re:Prison rape is no joke
PS God loves you and longs for relationship with you. If you would like to know more about this, please email me.
At tom_cooper@bigfoot.com ? Are you sure you want people to e-mail you at the address tom_cooper@bigfoot.com ? You should display your tom_cooper@bigfoot.com e-mail address more prominently, else you might miss out on many interesting offers! You should let people know that it's tom_cooper@bigfoot.com who wants to talk dirty about sex with deities. -
Re:As a longtime Yahoo Mail user...
I would also recommend Bigfoot, which has all those features, and depending on what level of service you want, only costs $5-$10 per quarter... The service is decent, and the spam filtering is quite good - and you can forward them any spam that does get though and it'll get caught next time. There's also a free email option available as well, for those that don't mind filtering out the ads and spams themselves.

BigFoot
You can try BigFoot.
"The last email address you'll ever need" -
Re:Just got back online
You might consider an aliasing service. Back in the pre-broadband days I was switching ISP's like mad to find the best pings. I finally got a Bigfoot account that with a bigfoot email address that would forward email to any address I gave it. Worked great.
I quit using them when IEEE started offering the same service free to members. I understand that since then Bigfoot has gone to a pay or get Spam system but it's worth considering. -
Re:I think I'll be OK
The only thing I'm really worried about right now is losing my e-mail account and having friends get their messages bounced before I can tell them my new address (whatever that may be).
Do what I do - use an email forwarding service. I use iName, but Bigfoot also has free forwarding. Bigfoot limits you to 25 messages/day on their free accounts; iName has no limit AFAIK. I've been using iName for several years now, and the only problems I've had have been the occasional slow delivery. Nothing more than an hour or two though, and it's usually very fast. -
Bigfoot.com
I have been pleased with the spam filtering from Bigfoot, and it says that it is now available to all members again (they tried for a while making it a $19.95 Premium Service).

The weather should be good for me.It looks like "Mostly Sunny" for where I live to get good results with a box with the necessary hole and cutout made. Then digital pictures may be able to be taken of the image and posted for all to enjoy.
Right now, there is that dreaded "lake effect snow" everybody talks about in the Great Lakes region.

Re:politicians' email addresses
However, it might be worthwhile to set up a bunch of forwarding addresses that don't end in
.gov that you could supply to the spammers that would forward all the spam to everyone in congress.500 Quatloos to the first person who bigfoots every email on Capitol Hill!

Some "essentials"...
If you're mildy familiar with motorola assembly, grab the Onboard Resource Editor. It's great fun. You can examine all the databases of every app you have installed and alter anything you want. Dead easy to disable nagware.
Games: Pyramid, Dopewars, Lines, Freecell, and Vexed.Top Secret. For storing your passwords etc. (protected my TinyDES encryption).
Planetarium. The best astronomy palm companion.
MindSpiral. Just to get freaked out.
Invert. Invert your screen (because some grayscale apps, when backlit, look dodgy)
Convert. The best conversion table app.

I have a 730T
About all I can say about Linux is that so far, it won't work because it doesn't like the PCMCIA hard drive. I used a DOS-based distro that loads via LoadLin to avoid the LILO issues, and the kernel loads, then times out while trying to access hdc1 (why is it hdc1 instead of hda1? Weird.) I bought and tried 3 different brands and sizes of hard drives too, so it's probably not because of a specific PCMCIA implementation. And I tried several different vintages of kernels. And I tried the "old disk-only driver" for IDE. Was going to start asking around on the kernel-dev list since I've asked everywhere else I can think of and haven't gotten a satisfactory answer; but haven't gotten around to it.
I have Windows for Pen (based on 3.1) on my Dauphin DTR-1, and I'm loathe to actually use that, but I bet it'd work. Drivers for the pen are available... I saw that somewhere.
Others have suggested GeoWorks, that old competitor to Windows that died miserably... except they got bought and it's now part of a package called New Deal Office. There's some stuff here.
Gem would also be interesting.
General 730T links:
- GlobalMonitor 730T page - these guys sold me my 730T on ebay, they sell quite a few, and they have been helpful in setting up a means to exchange info among their customers. But they still haven't posted my comments yet.
- Dan's IBM ThinkPad 730 pages - this is a link that I found on the GlobalMonitor page
- What the heck, I think it's time I started a page but there's no info there yet...

Blackmail potential
A website like this makes it all too easy to collect confessed secrets and blackmail the confessors, which would be rather negative feedback for the confessors! I do wonder, however, how is the security at real-world confessions? Would it be difficult to slip a bug or tape recorder (or XCam
:-) into the confession chamber? "Accidentally" leave one behind after your confession? There seem to be so many potentials for abuse with a religion that rests your morality on the confession of sins. I know that the Catholic faith was (a few hundred years ago) greatly abused (see Chaucer's Canterbury Tales); is it prevalent or uncommon or impossible now?

Re:Ok, so tell me...
Here's my tale of 15 CDs or so... For most of my life, I didn't listen to music at all; my friends didn't, and my parents only had classical stuff, which was just boring. Then, a few years ago, I found an MP3 site (by accidentally typing ftp:// instead of http://) and figured that I'd download a couple of songs from a few artists that I'd heard about. Of course, there were a few songs that I didn't like, but I did like many of them (They Might Be Giants, R.E.M., The Simpsons
:-), et al.) This pretty much started my interest in music. I signed up with a CD club and ended up buying the CDs (~15) with most of the songs. Buying 15 CDs cannot possibly be construed as hurting these artists. As for the songs I downloaded for which I didn't buy the albums, even without MP3s, I would not have bought their albums. Also, I don't listen to those MP3s (after all, if I liked them, I would have bought the albums). This certainly doesn't hurt the artists.
I'm sure that in the future I will definitely buy more CDs, further helping out the artists, all due to MP3s. Have I hurt these artists through MP3s?
I do know some who never ever buy any CDs but rather just download the MP3s, but I think that they are in the vast minority. CDs are cheap if you join one of those clubs (12 free CDs if you buy just one at BMG), and if you quit after fulfilling the obligation, they typically send you an offer to win you back after a period of time. It's simply easier to buy the CDs that than search for and download the MP3s.

Re:Are We There Already?
Hmm... good point. This doesn't really have a justification. It isn't strictly exponential. An exponential decay function describes a population whose individuals are equally likely to die at any given age. It is unlikely that old and young CD-Rs are equally likely to break; however, it doesn't matter. It's still rather unlikely that a CD-R's life expectancy is less than 10 years.
It's fairly reasonable to assume that age doesn't make the CD-Rs less likely to break; that would be absurd. (Am I wrong here?) If age does in fact increase the chances of the CD-R breaking, then that merely strengthens my argument that the life span of a CD-R must be greater than 10 years.
Simply: If age increases the chances of a CD-R breaking, then the probability of a CD-R not working after a year will be less than in the prior calculation. Hence, the probability of all 40 CD-Rs working after a full year would be even less than in the last calculation.
Expanded (I was pleasantly surprised that the last argument applied; note the "less" and "greater" qualifiers): If the life expectancy of a CD-R were less than 10 years, then (As x goes from 0 to ?(infinity), Integral?(2^(-x/h))dx < 10, so h/ln(2) < 10) the half-life of a CD-R would be less than 10 * ln(2), or 6.9 years. Then, the probability of a CD-R not working after t years would be less than than 2^(-t/6.9). So, the probability of a CD-R surviving one year is less than 2^(-1/6.9), or 0.90. Hence, the probability of 40 CD-Rs all surviving a full year is less than 0.90^40, or 0.018. This is less than the probability of drawing the Ace of Spades from a deck of cards with jokers: possible, but unlikely. Since all 40 CD-Rs did survive a full year, it is much more probable that the original assumption was false (or my math is wrong
:-); i.e., it is much more probable that the life expectancy of a CD-R is not less than 10 years. So, even if the CD-R is more likely to break as time goes on, the argument still holds. In my last post, I established that if old and young CD-Rs are equally likely to break, then the life expectancy is not less than 10 years. The last paragraph established that if old CD-Rs are more likely to break than young CD-Rs, then the same argument still holds. Finally, if you can show me a CD-R that is more likely to break when it is young than when it is old, I'll quit my argument
:-).I should really start studying for my English midterm...
Daniel J. PengBTW, why does slashdot insist on mangling all my properly-escaped character entities (delta, infinity, integral, quotes, less than signs, greater than signs, etc.)??? I've got stuff that looks like <strong>></strong> in my code.

Re:Are We There Already?
All the major CD-R manufacturers claim expected CD-R lives of at least 50 years, although (being manufacturers standing to profit from longevity) their results may be dubious.
The Special Interest Group for CD Applications and Technology has performed a study; after artificial aging, 3 (TDK, Avery-labeled TDK, and Taiyo Yuden) out of 8 CD-R manufacturers' discs could not be read. There are some limitations to this study, though. There were not enough discs to subject them to the full "Life Expectancy of Compact Discs (CD-ROM) -- Method for Estimating, Based on Effects of Temperature and Relative Humidity" (ANSI/NAPM IT9.21-1996), so there is not estimate of how long these discs are expected to last (which almost makes the aging section of the study useless). The aging conditions were 80C, 85% relative humidity, 750 hour period, ramping rate of half that of ANSI IT9.21 recommendations, and equilibration time of twice that of ANSI IT9.21 recommendations. There are some other links at http://www.cd-info
.com/CDIC/Technology/CD-R/Media/Longevity.html that you may want to take a look at.In my own personal experience, though, I have made about 40 (TDK) CD-Rs that receive heavy use that are about a year old, with no reported problems. Taking life expectancy to mean the average life span of a CD-R...
"Proof" by reduction to an absurdity that the life expectancy of a TDK CD-R is greater than 10 years.
If the life expectancy of a CD-R were less than 10 years, then (As x goes from 0 to (infinity), Integral(2^(-x/h))dx = 10, so h/ln(2) = 10) the half-life of a CD-R would be less than 10 * ln(2), or 6.9 years. Then, the probability of decay after t years would be less than than 2^(-t/6.9). So, the probability of a CD-R surviving one year is less than 2^(-1/6.9), or 0.90. Hence, the probability of 40 CD-Rs all surviving a full year is less than 0.90^40, or 0.018. This is approximately (within 1.1%) the probability of drawing the Ace of Spades from a deck of cards with jokers: possible, but unlikely. Since all 40 CD-Rs did survive a full year, it is much more probable that the original assumption was false (or my math is wrong
:-); i.e., it is much more probable that the life expectancy of a TDK CD-R is greater than 10 years. Now back to studying for my English midterm...

Perhaps not quite ready for prime time, but...
Voting through the Internet cannot yet replace physical voting, for all the reasons that others have noted; however, I don't see any reason why voting through the Internet cannot be introduced as an alternative to an absentee ballot. How is an absentee ballot any worse than an electronic ballot?
The security on an absentee ballot (at least where I live) involves registering as a voter in person and mailing a request for an absentee ballot, in response to which an absentee ballot is mailed to your house and your request is noted. In other words, next to none.
Is this any more secure than using public key cryptosystems to authenticate voters online? You have to initially verify that the person that has the private key is really the person that he claims to be, but once this initial step is carried out (which can be done at voter registration), what prevents secure absentee voting? This would make life much easier for citizens living abroad, in remote areas, etc.
Privacy, security, reliability, and public confidence cannot be provided any better by postal services than by strong encryption. As for anonymity, absentee ballots can't expect anonymity anyway. For those who write, "If people aren't sufficiently interested to physically visit the polls (or send in the form for a mail-in ballot if they cannot do so), they probably aren't sufficiently interested to educate themselves on the issues:" In that case, why not reestablish the poll tax or the literacy test? After all, if people aren't sufficiently interested to pay a poll tax or learn to read, they probably aren't sufficiently interested to educate themselves on the issue. Physical ballots are no more difficult to "lose" than electronic ballots. There are no measures against coerced or bribed voting in absentee ballots; why expect them in electronic ballots? As for those who do not have or do not want computers, I ask, "What about those who live too far from a poll booth and don't have any means of transportation? Should poll booths be eliminated?"
Since absentee ballots suffer from all the problems that electronic ballots suffer, should we eliminate those too?

Re:Spam from @home
There are very few legitimate reasons for wanting to send mail through a mail server other than your ISP's
What if your ISP's mail server doesn't support, for instance, DSN? Or, if your ISP's mail server has an extremely long mail queue and you just want to put your mail through quickly? Your ISP's mail server is down? Or, you have two dial-up accounts and want to be able to send mail through either without re-configuring? There are numerous reasons for using a different mail server. (Oh, and on the ISP's side, this takes some load off their mail server.)
On a related note, the RBL list is really getting in the way of my dial-up mail server... it seems to block all of the dynamic IP addresses in the MSN and Worldnet points of presence in my area. I e-mailed them and received no response. Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions?

Re:I would frame the check.
It looks like that's what Chaney intends...
On 01/18/00 at 14:05:55 PST, seller added the following information:
I need to add a clarification and an update. First, I need to make this clear: I do not plan on signing this check. You can frame it and put it on the wall. I will officially ask Microsoft to give the chosen charity $500, which will essentially cost them nothing since the check will remain uncashed. It would be even better if Microsoft would join me in matching the highest bid amount. Obviously, that's their decision.
I am also raising my matching amount to $2500. Let's see how much money we can raise for a good cause.

Sorry, by "You know, when the first books came out, they had only words in them", I assumed that you meant books that came out of a post-Gutenberg printing press, since books before that sort of just stayed in the monastery; didn't really come out in the sense of being available for mass consumption.

Re:About time...
I am certainly not an expert in these matters, but it seems that moving from a hierarchacal software development model radically changes how a project progresses. There are unique challanges that broad "Open Source" development encounters. In particular, when there isn't a widely known "reference design" out there for people to model their coding efforts on, as has been the case with Linux (it doesn't need an architect because people can just look at Unix in general for design guidelines), projects can run into trouble keeping a focus.
As a result, for example, human factors issues are weakly addressed in Linux and it's native GUI projects. The overall conciseness of a design suffers when wandering coders can, well.. just wander through the code extending it.
I'm not sure that it's really the "overall conciseness of a design" that suffers in the Linux GUI. Most GUI tools that are available under Windows are available under Linux. The problem (as I see it) is putting it all together.
Coming from a Windows background, I'd really like to be able to access all my system configuration options from one application, like Control Panel, rather than having to do some stuff with linuxconf, other stuff with the Enlightenment configurator, other stuff with Xconfigurator or XF86Setup. linuxconf is extendable, so perhaps modules for that would work best. Plus, it's always nice if there are a curses or plain dumb-terminal front-ends for these tools also, so that I don't have to start X just to, for instance, alter my printer configuration (which RH's printtool really makes a lot easier than editing
/etc/printcap); linuxconf seems to provide a curses front-end too. (This was not meant to turn into a linuxconf rant... but :-)An API along the lines of OLE would be nice, although that does leaves me wondering what kinds of appliations I would use under Linux that OLE could possibly benefit. Still, regardless of whether OLE is useful or practical, Linux applications definitely need more consistent drag and drop support.
IMO, this lack of integration seems to be what suffers "when there isn't a widely known 'reference design' out there for people to model their coding efforts on." There needs to be some way to put tools together and some way to create standard API's, so that programs work together properly. Well, I guess that's what happens when "wandering coders can, well.. just wander through the code extending it."
Oh and BTW, if anybody can point me to solutions to these other somewhat annoying aspects of X, I'd be grateful:
- To set up keyboard shortcuts that launch applications when I hit Ctrl-Alt-G or Start-E or whatever.
- To be able to use the wheel on my mouse.
- The scroll bars in xdvi or xfig, which move in jumps as I right-click or left-click them. (Perhaps I need to recompile them with a different widget?)

Re:Text-based vs. graphics-based
If a Shockwave plugin means I get a presentation explaining a something to me in less bits than a similar animated GIF, great. If an animation shows me what the product looks like more clearly, that's great, too.
Yes, if an animated GIF or a shockwave plugin explains a concept better than text or expresses an idea with more clarity than text, then it makes sense to use such a representation to convey the information. The best way to get a message across is the one that should be used.
On the other hand, a Flash animation that just scrolls text in front of my face at some predefined rate is more than just useless; it also makes me sit there and wait for all the text to flash across. Take splash pages for another instance; of all the splash pages that you've seen, how many actually serve any useful purpose? Also, if an HTML layout is essentially one big graphic, then my attention is more likely to be drawn to the "pretty pictures," rather than the message that the page is trying to get across. Pictures, illustrations, animations, etc. are fine, so long as they serve a purpose (preferably mine
;-).But then discovered that you could put images in books as well, too, and even though it cost more and took more time to print, the did it. Why did they do it? Because graphically it was more enticing. Sometimes it does absolutely nothing to enhance the story, but sometimes, they're very beneficial.
In the 15th century, when illustrations were first placed into books, to take an image and put it in a book involved making a woodcut or an engraving -- a nontrivial amount of work, not one that would be undertaken simply to make a book "more enticing." I find it more likely that illustrations would be published with a purpose: maps, art, etc. If it did "nothing to enhance the story," I doubt that that publishers would have gone to so much trouble. Exotic Matter, GUT, Wormholes, Time Travel, c
Dr. Lederman,
Exotic matter and negative energy seem to be the key to many interesting applications of relativity: wormholes, time warps, etc. Do you see it conceivable in the near future that matter or energy of this nature could be produced in (relatively) large quantities?
Also, what kind of revelations and applications can you envision that would arise from a Grand Unified Theory? Would we see any benefits from just a partial marriage between some forces, general relativity, or quantum mechanics?
What are your thoughts on the feasibility of time travel backwards or travel through wormholes (or other means to circumvent the limit of the speed of light), given an infinitely advanced civilization?
Lastly, here's a somewhat trivial question (argument with a friend), but... can you see any advantages to reducing the speed of light to something on the order of 75 miles per hour?

You know, 95% of the computers out there are from OEMs -- and because M$ has been bribing, threatening, and nearly dismanteling companies for not having Windoze pre-installed, this is thier primary lock. I hope the DOJ not only breaks them up, but also makes them stop it with the OEMs...and beleve me, Compaq, IBM, Gateway, etc. will be more than happy to pre-install Linux as both workstations & servers!

Major sabotage of text-to-speechFolks, this can be a nasty problem, if you use Lynx for text-to-speech. A relatively (?) new HTML tag (almost sure it's called an IFRAME) puts onto a text-only screen sometimes perhaps as many as 8 lines of visual garbage, far less intelligible than program source code. It must sound awful when fed to text-to speech!
Try as I would, I had no luck finding an example, but to get a very definite idea, go to the Bigfoot site, using frames-capable Lynx (2.7 or better, IIrc), to see what I'm referring to. There are four frames, and the equivalent of radio-broadcast jamming is very impressive, indeed! (Note a nearly or completely blank screen for the bottom frame, btw. (You're a masochist if you point text-to sppech at these mostrous messes!
Maybe we should call this messy condition "source code leakage" (into the text-only domain).
I may exaggerate the present degree of the problem, but it's one horrible example of how not to design a Web site. IFRAMES apparently are useful, but are they standard? I'll bet they aren't, just like getting an e-mail message in Pine, in MS-TNEF format.
Well-designed Web pages can look good with Lynx, too, btw!

Re:can be done, BUT
Yes, the compression rate for digital video used on mini-DV and Digital8 camcorders is fixed at 5:1, but that's when it's doing its normal recording of video data provided by the camera's internals. If you manage the error correction on the PC side then it might be possible to store generic data on a DV camcorder. The trick would be to implement lossless data transfer instead of the regular DV codec which is lossy. That and figuring out the camera transport controls, data redundacy, calculations for the jump to lightspeed, etc.
I obviously don't know much about the details but there is an excellent DV list at DV Central. Someone there will have better answers than I do.
I do know that:
- The DV codec is fixed at 5:1
- This produces a 3.6 MB/sec data rate.
- The DV codec is lossy and would need to be repalced with a lossless data transfer scheme.
- At 3.6 MB/sec a one hour DV tape stores about 13 GB.
- The new Sony Digital8 camcorders use plain old Hi-8 video tape, at only $5 a pop!

Re:can be done, BUT
You are right on the money. This is an issue of data compression and data integrity. Digital Video uses a 5:1 compression scheme that does not have 100% data integrity. Drop-outs in tape cause data errors and the DV codec will approximate the missing bits and produce a decent picture, but it does not have perfect error correction required for data backups.
I do desktop video production and the OnStream tape drives work great, best bang-for-the-buck I've seen. $300 for a 30 GB internal IDE. They make SCSI models for servers too. Sweet.

ctags stopped cutting it when I moved from C to C++, and it's useless for Java
Exuberant ctags is far advanced over old ctags programs. The C support is much improved and C++ and Java support have been added and work like a charm. Works especially well in combination with Vim. If you don't like the way it handles Java, you can give JTags a try, but it's nowhere near as stable.
If you're doing Java development, you'll probably also want to use Jikes, as it integrates very nicely with QuickFix mode in Vim and make mode in Emacs. There's also a Jikes Debugger java debugger, but I've not used it.
a decent code beautifier, since indent doesn't work right for Java
jsbeautifier is one of many -- a search I did a few months ago turned up 10 or 12 beautifiers for Java, and even more for other languages.
Of course, if you want a good graphical debugger then ddd is the way to go -- it lets you get to the gdb command line if need be.

Crack smokers and Popular Science readers
I am a Physics major at ISU ( occassionally ) and would like to point out that quantum computing is a field that is still considered 'pure research' . It is thought of as pure because of the remoteness of it's application . Using a quantum computer in the laboratory may help you simultaneously solve a two bit problem but the more possible states you need to represent the larger the molecule that contains the representative atoms has to be . DNA molecules may one day solve this ( if they can get a similarly extensible molecule to carry out the computations ) but I am much more encouraged by the use of DNA strands to solve the NP complete problems in reasonable time frames .
Traveling salesmen , smallest network and factoring primes are all problems that can be converted into one another in a linear ( or is it quadratic ? ) amount of time . Hence ; you solve one , you solve em all . No one has proven NP complete problems to be hard to solve . It is a conjecture that any of these things is difficult ( Given , it is a conjecture that has held up for a darned long time under intense scrutiny ). RSA and anything dependent on factoring primes or other NP complete problems may be trivially easy to break . If they are , we just haven't figured out the method yet .
If they aren't , it is entirely possible that we will never be able to prove that they aren't . One way or the other I wouldn't hold my breath for quantum computing to make these things suddenly open up.

Hackers vs. Crackers
I dont agree to conforming to stupidity, we know what the
word means. I think any chance we get to express ourselves
we should use the word 'cracker' to enforce its definition
and use the word 'hacker' to enforce its definition.
If we allow society to mix our culture, then essentially
they control how we are viewed. They control what is said about
us, and we are therefore treated less, simply by not using
a word to its definition. Instead of allowing general society to
hand out stigmas, why dont we make them realize the artistic talent in the word hacker, and not the general idea of malice upon the part of computer geeks. email me!
