Re:Linux on the Mac is for Masochists...
The lack of tabs in the Terminal
wtf? (must have been a very long time since you used KDE - i've been using it for about 5yrs and as far as i can remember KDE's terminal has always had tabs.
Other than "tabs" which have existed for years anyways. What exactly makes OSX superior to KDE as a "Power Desktop"?

Re:xorg
You can get these effects with any desktop running on Xorg6.8
just run
xcompmgr -c
(in an xterm) and that will give you proper dropshadows and compositing (no-more window trails)
and the
transset
(in an xterm)
command will give you a point-and click crosshair to make any window have real transparency.
Here's a screenie of my desktop demonstrating it.
You should be able to get similar results using any WM from TWM upwards, just make sure you have a enough beef to enjoy it fully.

Re:Elegance vs features
I would have to disagree about aiming to "copy" a particular desktop.
For Example
I've found a lot of improvements in kde3.3 it seems nippier, fonts are rendered beautifully, and the desktop couldnt be more configurable. In my experience it seems to me that KDE is taking the best parts of everything, but its Desktop behaviour wizard gives you the ability to change your Window manager to behave like any number of environments. In addition you can even create your own custom behaviours.

If you dont like it, change it !
My opinion: the GUI changes look too much like Windows/Internet Explorer for my tastes; I guess it's not just KDE.
Perhaps if you hate Windows so much you use the desktop behaviour wizard to make it behave how you choose!

Ill delete this tommorow, so get it while im feeling cheeky.

Its quite a beautiful mix actually :) Nick -
I prefer KDE
Im unable to RTFA due to the slashdotting.
I have to admit that I do prefer KDE, I just think that its easier to use, more flexible and more attractive to the eye. Im sure Gnome can look nice (Post your screenshots!), but Ive always found its ugly to the core. File requesters (even the latest ones are just butt ugly and inflexible). The widgets and icons look horrid and the taskbar at the bottom has never looked good.
Id like to see a gnome desktop that looks as nice as mine. Without the hideous file requesters and generally with more configurabilty.
I've tried gnome several times but I've always ended up going back to KDE because gnome has always made me feel unpleasently restricted.
Having said that, I am open minded and if the Gnome projects ever offers a better experience for me than that which I experience with KDE then id switch.

Re:My Music Library.
I know what you mean. Idea: assuming you don't have 10GB of *new* music and a lot of that is older CDs, Ebay them or something - obtain a legal copy cheaply, and don't give the cartel your money.
You could also download some music legally, of course, or buy from non-cartel musicians (I have CDs by two of the artists I linked, and a third one on order). -
Re:Good...bad...no - good!
You'll need to get KDE 3.2 / you can configure the panel using the "Configure Panel" prefs.
You will also need the Baghira Style and Decorations from themes.kde.org
And the Icons ...
The rest is just creative tweaking..
Have Fun ;)

Re:Good...bad...no - good!
I detect a smidgen of trolling going on here dude....
That said, I agree with you about the GUI. One of the reasons I stopped using Linux (after having used it in some capacity for about 4 years) is that, to my eyes, XP is just prettier.
Seriously though if you have been using linux for around 4 years you must have seen many many cases where Linux can look soooo much nicer than XP's fisherprice look and feel, sheesh!
I've got mine set up to look like OSX Panther
here is a screenshot! how subjective is that ? And personally if I had to stare at those garish XP colors all day i'd imagine my eyes would hurt pretty bad. -
Re:Most advanced and powerful?
Im planning on getting a Powerbook at some stage.
My desire to get one has nothing to do with the lovely eye-candy. The main reason is stuff like iMovie (and ease of use of my DV Camera) and also music applications like cubase etc. I wont do Windows, havent for a long time. Its the Unix underpinnings of OSX, and some of the apps that just dont have Linux counterparts such as iMovie.
Even so, im preparing myself for OSX by using KDE...
Stylisation...
All in all though Eye-Candy like that is just an added bonus ;)

Fantastic KMail Feature ...
I've posted this before, but for me, particularly as i am applying for jobs sending CV's off every five minutes, etc, this shows that it is often the simple things in life that really make a difference. I recently upgraded to KDE 3.2 , and recieved a pop-up dialog that actually made me smile
:))
Kmail Dialog
(its KDE3.2 with Aqua Icons, Baghira and clever configuration btw)

Nice Feature of KMAIL
i've been using kde3.2 for a while...
Today this rather wonderful dialog popped up just after I clicked to send an email in Kmail...
Attachments?
Often its the little things that really make the difference.

Sigma Designs?
What is Sigma Designs relationship with Kiss?
I found reference's to Sigma Designs alleged GPL infringment on the web sigma infringement
That article is relating to a file called "khwl.o" not sure what it does, but after looking at an ascii dump of the KiSS kernel I found references to it .
khwl.o
Sigma
I started looking through the Ascii dumps of these files. Someone more qualified than me ought to take a closer look because Im seeing stuff that looks like code from a bunch of different sources in their, Maybe some of it is on different licenses but I am seeing possible stuff from things like NXClient, Microwindows and a bunch of other interesting looking stuff.
The initial thought was that Sigma designs (they seem to make Multimedia Chips & Hardware etc) maybe supplied KiSS with drivers for their chips and this got merged into the code without them knowing. That might mean that Sigma are mainly at fault here.

Re:Please...
I hate Windows as much as the next person. However, Win98 is still a viable platform while people are still on their PII 333's (unless of course they are using an open source *nix) My mother for example is quite happy (well as happy as she can be given the windows annoyances) and it runs well on her AMD K6 400. You think she needs to buy a new machine? and fork out for a newer OS, to thrape the hardware a bit more ? I dont think so. Im the one who has to maintain the fucker!!! and I've got it running as well as I know how.
She simply doesnt need a new OS or computer. And I sure as hell aint going to encourage her to upgrade on the basis of this news.
Another friend of mine who is now taking his first steps on Linux, uses Win98 primarily due to cubase, he, like many other PC musicians, know all the intricacies of 98 and how to get the best performance out of it for music applications. He's running a PII 333, and its just fine for what we need my band can vouch for that. Aparently the newer M$ oses have poor support for his hardware (he has high end audio cards etc) upgrading the OS would mean a new learning curve and a loss in performance. So he'll be sticking with 98 for some time. Until (on my advice) he switches to MacOSX.
And thats just it... This news is going to make people change their operating systems.. but not neccesarily to another Microsoft one.

Re:Where's the content?
You obviously dont enjoy the freedom of hosting your own
website/s.
And maybe havent discovered the joys of suprnova and Bit Torrent.
Now I can watch movies, I never got round to seeing at the pictures, or movies that interest me but may not have got marvelous ratings.
There are also free, strictly legal movies available to watch from places if you look around. We have a small LAN i've set up at my home (I still live with my parents (Im a sad lonely geek)) so we share the broadband connection. My dad gets his kick from movieflix.com not really my cup of tea, but its there none the less.
Its not just about content either ... gone are the days of reconnecting 6 or 7 times before actually being able to browse the web.
Its also handy to be able to administer your box from work, or work from home (when not unemployed).
Besides in the UK, the cheapest Broadband is almost as cheap as the crappy dial up ISP's. -
Google, I hope you are reading this ...
Whilst this is the first case I have heard of where a search engine has been instructed by an external body to remove links or sites from its search results, this is by and large a terrible thing to happen. The removal of certain sites from the search results is a step in the wrong direction, and if this type of thing should continue then google will rapidly start declining in popularity.
Now that i have read this news I feel that google is a tainted service, and no-longer can i trust it as a search engine to pull up valuable and unbiased results. Google should stand their ground and not be bullied into filtering there results like this. I for one will be looking out for a google alternative, it just sucks that google have had years of development and years of experience in making a such a damn good product. So who's the next contender to the throne ? MSN ? ..... I surely hope not ...

SCO Fix , Hippocrites, Finally...
Well I was going to write to complain about the lack of an SCO post today, but I dont think i'll bother.
The interesting thing about this article is that SCO, who started this ball rolling have now started crying becuase IBM arent taking this rubbish. Now they are saying that IBM are orchestrating the the whole open source community response to the case. Which is of course nonsense, and hardly something that we as a community would advocate.
SCO however neglect to say how back stage funding and encouragement from Microsoft is driving the SCO campaign of Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (downnright lies)

Where There's a will, There's a way
I havent bought a piece of software for at least 3 years!
Most of the things I need are out there as open source.
Thing is... if this sort of thing becomes more common, it just means that the Crackers are going to have to get a bit more cunning and bypass the code which "phone's" home. Its futile really!
