Goldfish Synchronised Swimming.
After seeing this video, I certainly changed my opinion of goldfish, although I don't know if it's real.
http://whatthepets.blogspot.com/2006/01/synchroniz ed-swimming-goldfish.html
However it did remind me of "Skinner" by Neal Asher and his comments on dolphins.

Re:Booster shots?
I agree. Education and availablity of protection needs to be increased. When I was in the military, our dorm/barracks manager left her door open and had a big bowl of condoms that people could swipe one or two from with just a quick grab from the hall. I think college campuses could benefit from vending machines with condoms in them as well. The ones that sell gum as well as soda would do well. The only trick is to lower the cost. $1 for a rubber might pass at the club, but I think they should just be a $0.25-0.50 each from a regular vending machine. A smaller margin in exchange for more sales and a healthier (or less pregnant) campus wouldn't be so bad.
As for high school... parents with religous objections need to realize that sexual urges begin at puberty, not the alter. Teaching their kids the real facts about sex and emotional intimacy would be a lot better than letting them figure it out themselves or trying to find "loopholes" in thier belief systems.

1. Citation: it is in a response to a "frequently asked question". Click "FAQ" in left margin, go down to comments and moderation section, and you'll see a Q&A on the subject of who does the moderation.
...the difference between "has no case" and "has almost no case, but you might get lucky" is extremely fine....2. Sometimes the line isn't so fine. In these cases they are all based upon zero evidence of defendant having committed a copyright infringement. Also, there are numerous other acts of misconduct going on, including the continuation of cases after plaintiff becomes aware that the defendant didn't do it. You should read the brief of EFF, ACLU, Public Citizen, ACLU of Oklahoma, and American Association of Law Libraries in Capitol v. Foster, and the brief of US Internet Industry Association and US Computer & Communications Industry Association in Elektra v. Barker to see how overbroad and improper the RIAA file sharing lawsuits are.

Re:Advantages?
I read the article, but it didn't make it very clear - what will be the advantages of paid use of their quantum computer? Unless it's going to be faster than other supercomputers, I can't see the point.
Well, it's a quantum computer. Given the problem it might be like trying to make your CPU compete against a GeForce or ATI. If you try to do it all with CPU emulation, there's not much doubt who'll win. That said, I got the impression that current quantum computers have a so limited number of qbits (the computing power pretty much grows to 2^n with n bits), that it's faster and cheaper to just cycle through all 2^n possibilties one at a time. Currently the largest I've seen is a 12 qbit computer. Now 2^12 = 4096 states at once is a nice curiosity but nothing that makes my encryption keys worry. Basicly it's man vs Deep Blue at computer again - the quantum computer is great at testing many solutions at once but the sheer computing power of traditional computers takes home the victory. Now, if they can get hundreds of qbits together things will change massively. But the difficulty in keeping all those in a cohesive quantum state also raise drastically, so I think we're far off from a usable quantum computer. -
Writely.com vs. my 3 evening hack KBdocs.com
And the winner is: Writely!
I wrote about Writely a few days ago (and generally liked it). I wrote my own online word processor last year (KBdocs.com for my own use, then opened up free registration - got 1000+ uesers. My system was a 3 evening hack - generally OK, but not feature rich.
Google Calendars has a huge advantage because of the GMail integration. Writely.com's advantage will likely be a good integration with blogspot, etc. -
This is so old
Writely has been available for almost a year. The only news is that they've finished sending invitations to the waiting list and reopened public registration.

Re:Composite Kwin. When?
I'm seriously floored that Zack hasn't leapt up to add all kinds of XGL-powered goodness to KWin - it seems like just the kind of thing that he would be unable to prevent himself from doing! He seems to be tied up with other things, though

Re:Extortion?
yes corporations can resist government pressure to do questionably legal things. the big telecoms are much more established than google and are in a much better position to refuse to do illegal things for the government.

Re:I think the real reason was money.
Yeah, but good luck finding power for your laptop on the plane, or even in the terminal for that matter. I still remember a flight I took to Germany 2 years ago, where there were plenty of power sockets on the 56 minute flight to Atlanta, but nothing on the actual trans-atlantic flight.
Heck, I ranted about all these various problems in my blog not too long ago. It basically comes down to everyone wanting to act like they support laptop users, but no one actually doing so in a convenient/usable way. (that includes both power and internet connectivity) -
Old Grandma Hardcore, red-neck game-playing granny
Those videos of the old woman playing side scrollers and stuff in her chair, swearing away at the console?
Actually, I found the results of that search to be relatively safe.... it was called "Old Grandma Hard Core" or something. You might try googling for that, but I won't.
The website is indeed a blog called Old Grandma Hardcore and it chronicles Grandma's hospital visits and back surgery as well as her video gaming addiction. The lucky old gal even gets free shit from Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo, which surprises me a little considering how she refers to the bad guys in their games as "fuckers".
Stroller.

possible but improbable
It's pretty much impossible - while techincally feasable - to do what has been described as being planned, on a plane. It just wouldn't work, and at worst, the terrorist would probably cause a small explosion killing himself in the bathroom or suffocate (which would also be a "best case" scenario, of course).
Now, bombing a subway or some other situation where the binary agent has already been mixed would be plenty possible. It'd still be dangerous to the carrier (ie, volatile), but the explosives could be mixed in a relatively safe a
Here is a fairly through analysis by some chemistry-oriented guys. In short, they were either bloody idiots, or they never really intended on blowing up the planes but to do something else.
(My guess: it was either a diversion to distract our intel guys while they plan something eles - wihch is bigger in scope - or they're mainly just trying to inconvenience us and put us into a panic gridlock.) -
Re:No 3D
When I first looked over the title story, I thought "why not use a livecd linux with a usb key for personal settings, etc."
I have one, see the screenshots link below.
It depends on what the user has to do with his/her workstation. I have set up my knoppix remaster to do very specific things, mainly surf the internet, get email, and edit web pages and upload them. I have GIMP in there. But, other applications can be placed in the CD, as I have a fully automatic remastering script, that will prepare an .iso after everything is placed in the master filesystem to suit everyone. Also, I have a fully automatic "master copy" script, that will set up a "master" of the existing CD in a hard drive partition that you select, ready to work on, and receive new additions. You can chroot into the filesystem, but you don't have to in many cases just to add applications. I update Mozilla Firefox all the time without chrooting. This involves the use of EmelFM, the file manager, and of course one can write new scripts to go in there with SciTE. I do that all the time.
With Knoppix, and a Knoppix remaster such as mine, one can set up a "persistent home directory" on a USB memory stick, but it is easier to just use a restoration tarball, on the stick, to get the portability desired.
My remaster is based on Knoppix 3.4, and will run very well on 400 mhz machines with only 128 mb of ram.
An example of that is my HP Pavilion 6330, that been fitted with a 400 mhz AMD K6-2 processor.
With anything like this, it is best to keep it simple, to keep costs of maintaining the system low.
Once one gets everything in the CD, then lots of copies can be made, and the work can be done on a variety of machines.
My Getting Started Guide is online.
I have a blog here.

Re:Funny thing
Amazon is whole nother creature. I have not stayed up on them and I have no friends working there, so I really can not comment on them. But from where I sit, they seem to be doing ok. Of course, they probably should do some updating on their website and consider taking on e-bay.
They've tried to take on eBay in the past - remember Amazon auctions? From Greg Linden, a former Amazon employee from the "early days":
In March of 1999, Amazon.com launched an auction site to compete with eBay.
... When the site launched, it was technically superior to eBay's, faster, better search, and several new useful features. The inventory was reasonable, but not large.
Over the following months, the site did not grow as rapidly as some at Amazon optimistically projected. Amazon customers turned out to be quite timid about exploring the auction site, fearful of the lack of guarantees and customer service, unattracted to the idea of bidding.
Amazon Auctions stalled. Sellers moved away. Eventually, Amazon just gave up on it. While Amazon Auctions occasionally twitches in its sad resting spot on the current Amazon site, it is all but dead now.

Re:What's Really Irrational
There are over 5,400 orginal manuscript copies and they all correlate. This exceeds any other literary text by 5,000. 2,000 years of study and denial and not one definitive myth buster... hmmm. That doesn't even factor in all the eye witnesses and outside (non-christian, non-jewish) historocity that validates the claims in the new testament.
Ahh, and where are all of the transitional forms that have lived and died over the last 30 million years?
But, as soon as you give in you can't think of yourself as god any more... pity, is that what's holding you back?

Of course, we have to accept their word on blind faith because there is no way to prove or disprove what they are saying. These evolutionists claim that something like massive bombardment of radiation resulted in mega mutations in species which produced "instantaneous" changes from one life form to another. The nature and issue of mutations will be discussed later and the reader will see why such an argument is not viable."
This is exactly what the Christian faith in God the creator is not. Christianity is an intellectual faith. There is more evidence that Jesus walked on water, healed the sick and blind, raised from the dead, and ascended into heaven than for an instantaneous change from one life form to another!
How could so many "intellectuals" be fooled by evolution? The Religion & Society Report says, "Putting God aside, as we are doing, at least on the government level, we do not insure ourselves against delusion: we become more susceptible to it." It is ironic that it is not the "Jesus people" trying to impose their beliefs on others, but they are simply asking for academic freedom and open discussion. On the other hand, it is "scientists" and "evolutionists" that are imposing their views on all American school children. Re:770 challenger? I think not.I use my 770 for extensive web browsing, VOIP using Gizmo Project, ssh, GAIM, and Email. Since blogging takes up so much of my free time now, having a full web browser in my pocket for research is a great help.
Your question was: What ISN'T it good for? Well- You're not going to do a lot of gaming on it, but you can do more than you could on a mobile phone.
- If you're out of WiFi range, make sure your phone has a Bluetooth DUN support and a compatible data plan.
- The RS-MMC card is a bit of a limiting factor, but I still have three full-length movies re-coded for my 770 on my 1GB card.
- The addition of swap native to the 2006 OS is a great improvement, but don't expect to have a couple Flash heavy sites, the VOIP client, and the RSS reader all open at once.

770 challenger? I think not.
I've been blogging about the 770 since shortly after it's release and know it pretty intimately. the Mylo has no chance as a direct competitor. The 800x480 touchscreen just isn't there on the Mylo. Neither is Bluetooth or (a hackable) USB host port. The 770 is for mobile web browsing. The Mylo is for teens and tweens who want to chat with their buddies after their mothers told them to go to bed.
Really... saying the Mylo is a competitor to the Nokia 770 is like saying a Honda Fit is a competitor to a Rolls Royce. Sure, they're both cars. Sure, it's not likely people will own both. The target markets, however, are very different.
I have a new UMPC blog, by the way. Therein is a four part head-to-head comparison of the TabletKiosk eo UMPC and the Nokia 770. -

Re:How does this relate to string theory?
Google your friend. ANAM (I'm not a matematician), but I'll try.
According to string physicist Lubos Motl the proof indeed important to string theory. The proof based on the flow on the manifold (surface), analogous to heat dissipation - Ricci flow. This flow deform metrics (distance between points of the surface). But this process also describe renormalization of worldsheet - how the physics of the worldsheet (surface which string drawing, moving in space and time) change with changing of the observation scale. That is how phisics of string change then the scale of calculation changed. -
Logitech V200 mouse
The Logitech V200 cordless mouse comes in plastic packaging that is so thick, I would say that a circular saw is the most appropriate tool for opening it. It's probably at least twice as thick as it needs to be. I think that the only explanation for that is to make you so thoroughly mangle the package that you would feel bad about returning it if you change your mind.

Teetering on the brink of dictatorship
Maybe it's the history of the British fight against the IRA, but it seems to me that the British people have been a little more tolerant of state intrusion than Americans. What I infer is happening now is that the overboard Orwellianism of the current British government is reaching a tipping point where a lot of Brits are wondering, "How much is too much?".
Your replies from Brits so far are quite informative in the sense of why Britons have been so tolerant. They have no idea how close Britain is to a totalitarian dictatorship.
This Government has already passed 2 truly totalitarian laws:
1. The Civil Contingencies Act, which is almost exactly the same as Hitler's Enabling Act.
2. The Identity Cards Act, which not only forces passport renewers on to a database, it also connects that database with 4 other significant databases (tax system, police records, ANPR & passports) thus creating the world's most intrusive database. It does not stop there either. There is nothing preventing our medical records, phone records, email & surfing records, credit card records etc being linked to the meta-database.
The Govt is trying to get a 3rd totalitarian law through, the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill. This, like the Civil Contingencies Act, grants almost unfettered power to a handful of people. While CCA requires an emergency to be declared and cannot abolish elections or amend the European Convention of Human Rights (its only limitations), legislation under LRRB currently requires approval (without debate) by both Houses and likewise cannot amend the ECHR. It's amended version is no less dangerous AFAIK.
There are also 4 anti-terror laws, all worse than your Patriot Act and two of which have been ruled to contravene the ECHR (both for locking people up without trial).
Thanks to people like Lord Phillips, the House of Lords has been doing a reasonable job of standing up to Blair's executive, with the two obvious exceptions above. They have very little power (which they are reluctant to use), merely being able to hold up a Bill for about a year. The Law Lords are not able to overturn laws, but simply rule them incompatible with other laws like the ECHR.
As I implied at the start, the reason we've allowed this is that almost no-one knows. I bet less than 1% of Britons have even heard of the Civil Contingencies Act.
We are not taught to scrutinise our Govt as I understand Americans are. We haven't had to fear our Govt in modern times, and most people who did were left wingers who voted for Blair and have been slow to realise how dangerous he is.
We also don't realise that Britain is an elective dictatorship which has respected freedoms only because of the benign nature of its governments. The Conservative opposition has been remarkably quiet as has the media until the last few months. I kid you not, if Britain survives this attack on our freedoms (and that's a big if) it will be because of blogs, unfunded campaigns, leaks and Blair's mistakes like Iraq & pushing for 90-days detention.I wrote about Britain's remaining safeguards here.

Re:Just a question, and some thoughts
daveschroeder writes: "....In this case, the father (the dead man) was probably the one legally responsible for the internet connection and was likely also a legal guardian of his stepson. Whether you agree with it or not, there can certainly be legal culpability on the part of someone who is legally responsible for a particular item (such as an internet connection). I have literally no idea how this holds up in the context of music sharing; just pointing out that fact."
I think you may be a victim, possibly subliminally, of RIAA propaganda.
You happen to be incorrect on both points. Neither (a) being the person who pays for the home's internet access account, nor (b) being a legal guardian of someone who might have committed a copyright infringement, makes one "responsible", under the law. (By the way he was not the guardian of the stepson, the stepson is an adult.).
The RIAA has done much to create the impression that you are operating under, that parents are automatically liable for copyright infringements which might take place through the internet access account they pay for; but this is not the law.
I would recommend that you read the brief submitted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ACLU, and others, in Capitol v. Foster, where they discuss how the RIAA has, in a calculated way, attempted to give you that impression.

Re:Even better than MySpace
I have not used Notepad since I started using various linux distros to do work on my websites.
For a while, I used Gnotepad, then discovered SciTE, which I now include in Rapidweather Remaster of Knoppix Linux. No problems whatsoever with SciTE. I include Opera 9.01, build 400, and it is configured to show page source in SciTE. Provides super-fast editing of pages.
Check the screenshots page in signature, below.
I do use Blogger, mine is here. Right off the bat I had problems with Blogger handling images, so I have to put them off-site if I want to show one. They do provide a reliable and reasonably easy-to-use service, however. -

YouTube has been deleting videos left and right...
...even when they are technically public domain.
You know all those Warner and Fleischer cartoons that have been sold for years on crappy VHS tapes at the local 99 Cent Only store? Guess what. Warner gets pissy about some of their later cartoons being posted to YouTube, and then YouTube pulls EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Even the cartoons that entered the public domain.
YouTube seems to be deathly afraid of suffering the same fate as the old Napster so they have been very quick to pull stuff. They also have a "three strikes" policy about copyright infringement. Three videos get cashiered for possible copyright infringement and your account gets pulled.
John Kricfalusi, the creator of Ren & Stimpy, had his YouTube account pulled because he posted short snippets of Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons that had passed into the public domain. -
Re:Now if only thier feeds weren't crippled...but blogger won't allow images in feeds?
What the hell are you talking about? Blogger allows images in its feeds just fine. Check out the atom.xml feed of one of your examples: http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/atom.xml and you'll notice images. Lots of them. Not only that, I just subscribed to the feed in SharpReader and the images showed up just fine for me.
The problem is on your end. Get a decent feedreader and it should work for you.

Oh please...The problem is not software patents, its crap USPTO patents that should never have been issued.
The EU Patent office is not the diploma mill that the USPTO has become. And the USPTO itself was much more sensible until the 1980s when Reagan tried to turn it into a profit center.
There are legit software patents, the RSA algorithm for example is a non trivial piece of intellectual work. 98% of software, business model and genetic patents are unadulterated crap but that does not mean that there is no legitimacy possible.
The Free Software movement is fixated on ending software patents because that is the personal obsession of RMS. It is not a realistic political goal. Reform of the USPTO on the other hand is very realistic and can gain support from both Open Source advocates and from the major software companies like IBM and Microsoft. The diploma mill even hurts the legitimate small inventor who has actually invented something. Send a notice of infringement to any large company today and it will be ignored. There are simply too many notices sent, to get attention you now have to file suit.
I wrote an essay on how we could reform the USPTO its on my blog some time I will get round to finishing part 4.

Me and my good buddy Google
"Hey Google!" I exclaim on my blog. "Hello user." "I heard you were working on Blogger." "Uhhh." "What was that? What are you planning to do with Blogger?" "Update." "Update?" "update Blogger, user." "Beta?" "Yes user! Wait, no." "Haha! I trust you Google" as I slap my TFT heartily on--what could be its--back. I always say a little dialouge never hurst in the morning. I heart Blogger, BTW

Re:When to use Tags (versus Categories)
I don't think it has to be an either/or proposition. With tags, you can use your most-frequent ones as categories. You can also keep your specific words, shiboleths and "one-shot" tags in the mix, for Technorati and other tag-based searches.
That way, you get the best of both worlds. Of course, there are other views.

Re:Bloghackers?
The aforementioned "enthusiasts who extend Blogger in useful, novel and unexpected ways" are still digesting the implications of this change for their carefully-constructed, hand-wrought hacks. Especially those that supplement Blogger's lack of categories and comment feeds.
A good jumping off point can be found at this post: Blogger Beta Explored.

Now if only thier feeds weren't crippled
I read a few people's blogger/blogspot blogs (including John Kricfalusi of Ren & Stimpy fame, The Online Photographer and others), and there's something that really bugs me about their feeds: the images don't show up. In an effort to save bandwidth, Blogger has prevented all external linking, including from Bloglines. For a blog about photography or animation, this makes the feeds next to useless. The thing that gets me is that this is actually costing them more bandwidth, since I'm downloading the feed and then going to the page to see the images anyway. Blogger: if you're going to allow full-text feeds, allow images too. Picasa web galleries allow hot-linking, Google video allows embedding... but blogger won't allow images in feeds?
