Re:Intelligent Navel Theory
I have--many. Please don't sit in judgement because you disagree with me.
Tell me, what do you think is wrong with the stickers that are at the heart of this debate?

Re:Intelligent Navel Theory
Where is the fossil record the the "partial wing"--the one that was growing but had yet to produce results? Where is the fossil record for the partial gil--the gil that didn't yet breath but was existing in order that some relatives would grow one that did work?
The fossil record is incomplete. Mutations NEVER result in good changes in the near generation, and therefor the extended generation. So evolution remains only a fallible theory.
I could go into all the times I've witnessed God, but you wouldn't believe me, so why bother.

Re:Fundamental Fundamentalist question...
The heart of this debate is not whether evolution should or should not be taught, its how it should be taught.
Would you agree that evolution is still only a theory, even if a theory you believe likely to be true?
The fact remains--you can't tell kids its true when there is no proof that it is true. You are making this into an "us vs. Christians" argument. Its nots---its a theory vs. science vs. education argument.
Its a theory, so why not teach it as a theory? The real people who don't want the truth to be known are those who refuse to let the children learn that evolution remains a theory and not a proven fact. Period.
What is wrong with a sticker that declares the truth-that evolution is a theory? Anyone want to respond and argue that evolution is a fact? Go for it--then you will be on the side of lies.
Don't change the argument here. Is evolution fact or theory? Answer the question.

We don't mind. I learned about evolution. In fact, the more I learned the more I believed in God. But when you have educators proclaiming that evolution is fact and not theory you run into issues.

Hmmm... By your logic I could also say that we must teach "the universe began from nothing, for no reason. One celled lifeform became two celled, three celled, billion celled, again for no apparent reason. It just happened, for no reason."
Belief in God and evolution need not be mutually exclusive. That being said, evolution is as much a theory as creationism, and some may say it evolution relies on faith just as much (if not more) than creationism.
Really read up on evolution. There are huge missing factors. Darwin knew this.

Re:Idiots.
You assert then that religious people are stupid? People who believe in creation are stupid? Einstein? Hawking? Bill Clinton? George Bush? All the doctors at my church? All the nerds who believe in God? They're stupid and only cut out for work as a Wal Mart greeter?
You are an elitist, not to mention a close-minded bigot. Shame on you.

Re:Laughingstock
We are not Europe. They can laugh all they want. You can laugh too--move to Europe and laugh right alongside them. So be it. The US need not be like Europe for any reason.
You use "Europe" in huge generalizations. Do you realize there are more Christians and religious folk in Europe than all the US? Do you care?

"And given that there is no proof of such a being, apart from events and instances attributed to it, it is a matter of faith, and thus not of science."
But the same could be said of evolution. There is no proof-only evidence. I think there is evidence of God as well.

Re:What about a sample?
It will get released when everything is ready.
I don't work for Sun but I have been in the OpenSolaris pilot from Day One and I can tell you that I have been working like mad with it as have others. Myself and James Dickens worked night and day over the past weekend to build the OS on an E4000 as well as a LX50 machine for both enterprise class implementations and server room work. You can see the results of the workstation build at Blastwave.org and you need to watch James Dickens blog as well as mine to see progress that happens OUTSIDE of Sun. Not to mention the PowerPC port project at BlastWare which will also make progress when some other bits are in place. There are partnerships in place to work on the PowerPC port and GENESI is behind this as well as others.
Power is a big deal folks. Think of OpenSolaris on your IBM big iron also.
So go make a coffee and relax. Its coming real soon now.

Re:Actually, Microsoft is now paying for itscrovira writes:
There are almost no designers of PC chassis left. The differentiation comes with 'plastic panels' on the same box. Regardless of which panels you might buy, you're still stuck with the box underneath it all.
So true. I spent a few months searching for a cool PC case. There are very few cases that look like they were designed to be both beautiful and well-built. When it comes to rack mounted servers, they all look like they were designed by a high school shop class and then manufactured next to hell's own pig iron forge.
It's so bad that there are some people who buy old SGI rackmounts just to have decent-looking cases for their PC servers.
Apple, by contrast, has beautifully designed and built servers. the Xserves are great from an engineering and an aesthetic point of view.
All the PC case makers seem to be in a rush to be the cheapest; I'm surprised that at least one of them doesn't get out of that race and distinguish themselves by making something even half as interesting as Apple's cases and charge a small premium.

According to Vader's blog, Palpatine used Mace Windu's lightsaber to trim his hedges. Though I would expect no less from someone like that.

Re:My uncleWe can't figure out a better system
...A better system would be to provide a living wage (as opposed to the welfare dirty word) to those people whose jobs are increasingly replaced by automation and cheap labor. If you're one of the lucky few who still does USEFUL work in exchange for something, then you get extra incentive gravy for your WANTS, while those not so lucky/smart/quickly-adaptable get enough redistributed gravy to meet their NEEDS. Nobody should have to live in mortal fear of losing their job (unless you're one of those asshole sadists who believes that keeping the serfs suffering is a great motivator and makes it easier to keep control (and if so, fuck you)).
Robotics, IA/AI, nanotechnology, and other exponentially advancing technology will inevitably lead to this kind of world. "It's different this time". We can either choose a humane leisure society fed by intelligent automated production & fair redistribution, or we can choose to continue the greedy ratrace to the bottom as the wealth gap widens.
(I'm sure a lot of people who worship at the alter of dog-eat-dog hyper-capitalism and "globalism" will just write me off as some kind of idealistic-socialist-commie-hippie or whatever. Oh, and I am one of the "lucky" ones, but I've also got a conscience.)

Successful Blockbuster

Now imagine if this superfan camping out for 139 days is under 13.... -
Why?
People do this all the time, in message boards and on blogs, usually with a standard disclaimer that opinions expressed are not of their employer.
There are so many examples of this... Look at how many Microsoft employees have blogs like Scoble or Don Box, or Oracle's Tom Kyte, or IBM's Kyle Brown, or BEA 's David Orchard (I work for BEA as well) , or Google's Bosworth.. Do you really think these people are vetted by PR? How many employees post to newsgroups or public tech support forums... I see people get into public flamewars too.
On the other hand, there is a problem here with what constitutes a company's "voice". Bosworth, for example, gets into controversy for people confusing his opinions with Google's (or BEA's , previously).
Frankly, I tend to side with the cluetrain. As long as you don't claim to hold the "official" position, and don't talk about internal confidential information, it's beneficial to the company, its investors, customers, and prospects for employees to engage in open and honest dialogue with others.
I guess it depends on how paranoid you are about your company firing you for speaking your mind. Generally I don't get too concerned about it, if they did such a thing, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway. -
SF writers can't wait for Star Wars to end, tooBecause
"What George Lucas may have seen as eternal in his "Star Wars" blockbusters, science fiction writers have tended to see as antique"
SF writers look forward to it finally finishing, according to Episode VII Revenge of the Writers. It started out 30 years behind," said Ursula K. Le Guin. "Science fiction was doing all sorts of thinking and literary experiments on a totally different plane. 'Star Wars' was just sort of fun."
"It takes these very stock metaphors of empire in space and monstrously bad people and wonderfully good people and plays out a bunch of stock operatic themes in space suits," she said. "You can do it with cowboy suits as well."
If truth be told, sci-fi writers say, their work and "Star Wars" never had much in common.
Like science itself, science fiction has evolved since the days of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the end of World War II, the genre has shifted its focus from space and time travel to more complex speculations on how the future, whatever its shape, will affect the individual.
That shift has only accelerated in recent years, as biotech and genetic engineering have moved to center stage in science and captured writers' imaginations, and as the lines between science fiction and other genres begin to blur. . . .
One problem with "Star Wars," science fiction writers say, is that it is not, ultimately, concerned with science, but rather with a timeless vision of good and evil. . . .
I've written that media SF has often been a good few decades behind written SF, especially movies. They quote Richard Morgan in the NYTimes article ("That's the past of science fiction you're talking about, . . .It's just such a huge shame," he said. "Anyone who is a practitioner of science fiction is constantly dogged by the ghettoization of the genre. And a lot of that comes from the very simplistic, 2-D Lucasesque view of what science fiction has to offer."). Star Wars and Star Trek do capture the look and feel of written SF of the 30s and 50's (respectively). But I can't imagine either franchise being able to capture a fraction of the feel or ideas in the first few pages of Morgan's Broken Angels. Digital human freighting, sleeves, future warfare...The literature is filled with writing by Greg Benford, the 'how to empathize with ordinary deathless people' writer Greg Egan, Ken Macleod, Richard Morgan, Ian Banks, Cory Doctorow , or Charlie Stross. Movies haven't made it past the 70's (Bladerunner, the Matrix) other than perhaps 'Eternal Sunshine' (similar to a few 80's stories), and T.V. shows have only tentatively reached the 80's or early 90's (some Outer Limits and Twighlight Zone episodes). With Star Wars and Star Trek out of the way perhaps there'll be more room for the average media SF to catch up to at least the 80's.

Homeschooling for racists in training
"...home schooling can be a terrific idea for certain families -- especially if the parents are diligent, well educated themselves, and cultivate education not as the union card it's often treated as within the system, but a lifelong process of self-advancement and cultivation. The results of sound home schooling speak for themselves.
Unfortunately, home schooling in America also has a distinct downside: It can act as a cover for abusive and hyper-controlling parents, particularly those with extremist political, religious and cultural agendas..."

Midwest Coalition on Highspeed RailThe name above is not the correct name of the group, but I saw a presentation at the Metropolitain Conference on Public Transportation Research at the University of Illinois 2 - 4 years ago in which the speaker who was the head of a group that had secured Federal Funding for High Speed Rail said they were in the Final stages of planning before construction of a Springfield, Chicago, Milwaukee high-speed Rail line and that a Madison-Chicago or Chicago-Madison-Milwaukee link was also part of the deal. It was a number of years ago and so I do not remember the details, but it looked like it was fairly close to being a done deal.
I will check around with others who were at the conference in the next few days and see if I can post some accurate information. But the last I heard, High speed rail is not dead in the USA.
Now, I have to say, this is not 300 mph service. We are only talking 120 or 150 mph tops, but it still beats the heck out of driving.

Re:Perspectives of Canadian Political Parties?
You seem quick to denounce the conservatives on this one. The corrupt canadian Liberals who are currently in power are the most in favour of such draconian IP laws because it caters to their constituents.. the canadian heritage minister, Liza Frulla seen recently at canada's juno awards (canadas grammy's) slumming for music industry donations.. luckily if an election were called today her seat would be in danger. Are the conservatives a worse choice than the NDP in this? no. The NDP are totally in favour of harsher IP law. (though jack layton is all in favour of file sharing..) Personally I voted conservative the last election (and feel vindicated doing so for the most part) because the (now) MP told me flat out that she would not support the DMCA based on the information she had on it, that it was bad for Canadian business and consumers. Also Stephen Harper at least owns an ipod. Prime Minister Paul Martin probably can't program his own VCR.. unless it gives monetary kickbacks.

Re: Insightful?
You may be underestimating the horror of imprisoning the people there. Watch The Power of Nightmares by BBC. It looks weird, but it really seems that most of the terrorist threat was made up. It's very likely that 90-95% of all people in Guantanamo Bay are innocent. Do you know how flimsy the evidence was in those few cases of suspected terrorists caught on the US soil?
The whole thing is unjustified. If we ignore the US government propaganda for a second, the whole campaign was simply an act of unprovoked irrational aggression in violation of international laws. As Viggo Mortensen said about America commenting on parallels between war in Iraq and LOTR, "We are the evil guys". -
Re:Checkpoint ahead! Better "save game"...Listen to Naomi Klein:
One of the things that we keep hearing is that she was fired on on the road to the airport, which is a notoriously dangerous road. In fact, it's often described as the most dangerous road in the world. So this is treated as a fairly common and understandable incident that there would be a shooting like this on that road. And I was on that road myself, and it is a really treacherous place with explosions going off all the time and a lot of checkpoints.
What Giuliana told me that I had not realized before is that she wasn't on that road at all. She was on a completely different road that I actually didn't know existed. It's a secured road that you can only enter through the Green Zone and is reserved exclusively for ambassadors and top military officials. So, when Calipari, the Italian security intelligence officer, released her from captivity, they drove directly to the Green Zone, went through the elaborate checkpoint process which everyone must go through to enter the Green Zone, which involves checking in obviously with U.S. forces, and then they drove onto this secured road.

Re:Psyops aimed at the Italians?>> Many Italians believe that her car was
>> deliberately fired upon because of her politics.
>If that were the case, why is she still alive?
Her editor says their was a poll that said over half of Italy thought it was not an accident. Assuming there was such a poll, both the current US and the current Italian govt might take this seriously, considering the recent election there etc (too much to go into here).
As far as 'why is she alive?', I dont think much of the implied logic- if it was a conspiracy then things might not have gone according to plan (happens in the military sometimes!)
- if it was not a conspiracy - if some military unit heard that some Commie was coming thru who was going to rat out Falluja, theoretically they might have spontaneously decided to just fire on the car. Such an event would get covered up (and things would be going down just as they have been)
The car now said to be in Rome:
the FIRST car photos were discredited.
http://wagnews.blogspot.com/2005/03/right-wing-blo ggers-fake-sgrena-car.html .
A Yahoo news photo of a car damaged by bullets during the original kidnapping was copied around by various popular rw blogs, and they referred to it incorrenctly as the car during the airport-shooting (loudly exclaming how few bullet holes were in it!).
there are now photos of SECOND car in various sites -again via LGF (apparently)- A different car, but they are a sure a second time this is the right vehicle (sarcasm)
This photo apparently comes from a rw Italian newspaper, via the Berlusconi govt (btw, the PM of Italy owns a lot of media)
conclusion:
I am still skeptical. I want this car IDed by Sgrena as the car she was in. Not IDed by some LGF fighting-keyboarder types, or by any Italian ministry. (the Italian govt is in crisis)
point If it is true a bullet-damaged car has been transported from Iraq to Italy, then that can only be because the car has great political importance. But if it has such political importance, how can we be sure it is the same car?
back context: a few years ago the Bush admin requested funding or an entity that would create fake news reports to be used around the world, including in allied nations. The US Congress turned down the request but from this back-context it is clear the US govt is capable of such things, or rationalizing telling fibs in the interest of national security. and having Berlusconi stay on would be considered in that light. -
"Bullet-riddled" car photos
Here and here.
Look at how "badly" her car was "shot up" and decide for yourself if this "journalist" is a lying sack of shit for saying that the car was shot at 300 or 400 times.
Now, use the information you have just learned to judge her credibility as a whole. -

Too bad you can't opt out of BBC NewsI love BBC's entertainment fare, but I just can't stomach its left-of-New Labour newscasts. The Beeb has serious issues with systemic bias and it seems unfair that the entire populace is forced to pay for the relentless promotion of an ideology that most Britons don't subscribe to. Were I a Conservative or a euroskeptic of some stripe, I'd certainly be tired of being taxed in order to hear incessantly about how great Charles Kennedy and the EU are.
Couldn't there be a Third Way (tm) whereby one could opt out of BBC News but keep the rest of the programming? Or maybe they could create separate news broadcasts for each of the UK's major political blocs? -

Re:TRUE American? Not Hardly
I'm sorry I don't regularly get my news from that bastion of journalistic integrity the NY Sun *cough tabloid*cough*
Spitzer is the ATTORNEY GENERAL of NY. It is not his job to write and push bills through the legistlature. It IS his job to enforce the laws of NY state and he is doing a damn good job if you ask me. Also, if "the legislature is so appalled at his idea", why have I heard absolutely nothing to that effect in the past two years since that particular issue has even been talked about?
A visit to your website reveals your One True Righteous Crusade to apparently be concealed carry gun laws and their preservation. Aparently when you saw Spitzer took some action which was even remotely anti-gun, you decided he must be evil. You offer an interesting study on the irrational, complete black or white mindset of so many people. Do I completely agree with every last syllable uttered by the guy? No certainly not. But, shockingly enough, I am able to make the rational, sane assessment that he's doing a lot of good and is therefore worthy of my support even though he may not agree with me on the minutia of every last issue I'm interested in. See how that works? It's what we call a small logical compromise. Furthermore I actually live in New York, YOU seem to live in Oklahoma. Why do you even care? Ohhh right, because you're irrationally fixated with single issue zealotry. shame, that. -
Re:The force is strong with this one.
