Yah, clue-passive, non-malicious Trojan...
I'd like to give the Author of the Trojan a +5 "Magnificent Bastard" Moderation
Clue-Passive, because those with clue will remove it in 2 seconds...
"L33t Script-Kiddie" hax0rs will say: "The site was removed, argh I'm being tracked!!!" (and hopefully either stop, so SysAdmins don't have to de-virus their machines constantly, or learn enough so they understand a little bit more about what they're doing).
All in all, a clever combination of Technology and good understanding of Human-Computer Interaction.
Disclaimer: No, I didn't write it. -
Re:Pretty normalThat's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. That's not always the case, both with respect to whether it's always a good idea to get noticed for your work, and for those special cases where you do something for the sake of the company and the greater good. Everything you do in your professional life should be geared toward promoting your career and your career interests. That's more true. Getting credit for your work and advancing your career relate to each other more, less, or inversely depending on the situation. This is where a mentor comes in handy.

O'Really!
I generally love O'reilly books and also get quite a kick out of the O'Really parodies. Everything from "Windows NT's Infernal Filesystem" to "Practical UNIX Terrorism". These are great t-shirts if just for the look on a fellow techies face when they read the title.

Re:My initial concern...
I'm more worried about...
what happens if you plug a legacy PC into your network.
Anyone remember the Etherkiller? Great fun at a lanparty! -
Recommended book
The hardest obstacle in securing your network is the human factor. This book describes methods for dealing with the problem very efficiently:

You should get that NDA in writing... and wear clothes suited for the job. =)

Re:The end of an era...
Heh, how many people found out about jennicam through bofhcam?

Re:Revenge?
How's for this a plan on spam?

How to stop spammers"We must also take personal responsibility to kill spam.
Here's one possible solution to the problem of spam.

Another argument for Bayesian filters
Thanks to POPFile, I can at least filter out most of the spam that gets into my mailbox, but I prefer a solution that addresses the source of the problem.

Re:Trojan, or propaganda?
Probably something like this.
Before I got my own distribution of Clue, I had no idea how text-based counters could *do* that. I was baffled when I'd pull up a page's source, looking for the IMG tag, and find nothing but "This page has been visited 00042 times." How was I going to give a page fake hits without an image to reload? -
Re:how many geeks wear Benetton???
Now the sort of thing a geek wears are these O'Really T-Shirts

old book burning ...
I'm curious how many of us have an old UUCP or perhaps the first edition of Lexx/Yacc or some other now obsolete O'Reilly book ... more often than not sitting next to an up-to-date version of the same? Perhaps we could solve the U.S. energy worries by collectively burning them?
I also wonder how many of us proudly display an entire bookshelf full of them at work ... you know, the more titles, the higher geek esteem we're held at the office?
Either way, here is a fun little parody to roll your own O'Reilly cover. Another fun one at O'Really. And a few images just for fun.

O'Really has the book (and shirt) on what to do
I think that O'Really's Tracing Spammers says everything that we all think about these wonderful folk.

Re:Ultimate Geekwear
*nods* the O'really line was designed by the BOFHCam bloke. You should see his site, that whole section's based around the o'really concept, it's mondo cool and he's got more designs there that copyleft haven't picked up yet.
*hugs* to BOFHCam bloke -
Re:Other Funny Geek ShirtsMy favourite geek t-shirts are the O'Really ones, particularly "Snooping email for fun and profit" and Practical UNIX Terrorism
They only seem to come in white though and it aint really my colour unfortunately.

Re:He asked for it...
Yeah, just imagine what could the agents have thought if he happened to have one of O'Really shirts...
I was going to buy them at copyleft, but now I'm not so sure. I think I'll wait till I return to my country (I'm flying to the USA in a few days)

A few goodies...
I want an infinite-volume beer mug, and a Punpkin Gun (Current world record is over 4000 feet).
Oh, and for outdoor types, the Bumper Dumper will be appreciated.
For more scholarly people, these books are a must.
Share and enjoy.

Thanks Jenni, if it wasn't for you...
... there would be no BOFHcam.
Some might say this would be a good thing. I don't care. Bollocks to the lot of you. It's my ego, I can do what I like with it.
I'd like to thank Jenni for doing what she's doing. Running the JenniCAM gave me something to take the piss out of when I first came across a spare webcam to play with in my job. A few hours later I had the embryonic web site that became the BOFHcam site a few of you know and visit.
Frankly I don't give a fig what Jenni does on her site and in the view of her cameras. I aimed to parody her in the first instance, but now my Journal seems to have become something that hundreds of people seem to check at least twice a day. I get emails from all over the world from sysadmins, technicians, the occasional student and now and then a boss who's been trawling their employees' webcaches. Not one email has been negative or abusive, in the main they've enjoyed the site (many of them have never seen the JenniCAM, but go there after they've seen me mention it). Most people are glad to read something that show that their job isn't the worst on the planet (mine is).
As far as I understand it, I run the only site that's as faithfully close to the JenniCAM original (some might call that sad, I do too) design. Copying the style (cleaned up to be HTML4.0/Transitional), redrawing all the images and working on new versions and additions has taught me more about web design (good and bad) than I would have otherwise learnt from a book or a course, I feel.
All this is thanks to Ms Ringley and her cameras. If not for her, I wouldn't be able to slack off at work and play with web servers and shit.
Happy 4th birthday Jenni. Try not to go too much towards Flash and Java or I'll never be able to keep up.

Re:What's wrong with metal detectors and guards?
What freedoms do metal detectors restrict?
How about the right to carry a pocket knife? I used to have a pocket knife with me since the age of eight (I still do now, 28 years later). I dont see anything uncommon with that. Here in Europe it is even possible to attend a audience of the pope with a swiss army knife in the pocket.
