On a side note, why was the parent modded as a troll? Anything to save me $7.50 should be modded as informative. -

Re:bookpool is even cheaper
Bookpool has it for less than Amazon, BN, or booksamillion. They have free shipping if your order is $40 or more, so this may or may not be a better deal.
-
Re:$4 less and free shipping!
Get it at bookpool.com for $24.50 and don't give business to the AC.

Re:$4 less and free shipping at amazon!
Bookpool has it for $24.50. I can't remember the last time I found technical books cheaper anywhere else. You do have to spend $40 to get free shipping though.

What's Cheaper & Where (why just B&N and A
Instead of comparing just B&N vs. Amazon all of the time, why not use the book shopping bots? (Amazon and B&N are not the cheapest books every time you buy a book (they may be in this case (I checked), but in many cases, the others are much cheaper)! The bots search a lot of the book stores and rank the prices (including handling/shipping), present opportunities for discounts, and even point out the ability for finding books which may be out of print but can be purchased used.
Think of this as a book equivalent to PriceWatch

and not even a Karma whore a that.
Any self-respecting geek is not going to buy at Amazon and I would hope especially not after following your affiliate link in.
If you want to find good prices on tech books try Bookpool or All Book Stores.
BTW bookpool is $6.04 cheaper than your beloved amazon. -

You'd think that the geeks would be using bookpool as opposed to Amazon. -

Re:Outsourcing generally results in inferior produ
I agree with your opinion on outsourcing results, but not your conclusions. You get back crap from overseas, but if the Indians outsourced a project to the US, they would get crap back.
The problem is that you can't build a good system without access to the customer. I've been in software development going on 30 years, and I've never seen a spec that didn't have holes. And I've never seen a design that didn't have holes. If the coders are 12 time zones away from the designers/analysts/customers, then they are going to make things up to fill in the holes. Which means that 99 times in 100 the result is crap.
Alistair Cockburn has a very good book Agile Software Development that is about methodology, mostly. He says that he has never seen a methodology that works for outsourcing part of a project, like coding. He says that what will work is outsourcing whole projects, including architecture on down. This sheds some light on IBM's recent announcement that they will be moving high level jobs offshore in the coming years. -

This time with a link
Modern C++ Design actually does a good job describing some of the more sophisticated metaprogramming work you can do with C++. It actually demonstrates that you can determine a lot of type information when metaprogramming thanks to C++ template semantics. Really cool stuff.
Of course it does look ugly as hell. ;-) -
Don't Forget the Cookbook
Since I have had the recent freedom of no longer being concerned w/ NN 4.7-, I have been untilizing dhtml much more. I picked up the Defenitive guide along w/ it's perfect companion, JavaScript & DHTML Cookbook, also written by Danny Goodman. Like the rest of the cookbook series, it is more of a how to aimed at teaching one how to do the common tasks involved w/ DHTML, from conversions, use of objects & arrays to creating an xml (tree|dropdown|right click) navigation menu.
IMO, these are the only two books you need to learn DHTML. -

an even better tutorial...... is Tanenbaum's books. "Linux is obsolete" might not have been his finest hour (although some of his points were valid, and linux has since added module support to cut down on the monolithic nature), but minix is a learning OS (in the same way pascal is a learning language), and is much easier to understand (and better documented
:) than the linux kernel is. -

Beowulf runs on Windows, as well. Check here if you don't believe me. -
Re:WTF? $50 for a paperback fiction?
A common (and probably fair) complaint. If you shop around a bit you may find it for slightly less.
Syngress books tend to be priced a bit higher than some of the competition. They seem to be happy doing a little less volume at a little more margin. They're also a small publisher, so they don't neccessarily have the same economics of scale or influence that a big publisher does.
The whole book industry is interesting, from what relatively little I know about it. -
Re:amazon link
Book Pool has it even cheaper. Although I like Amazon a lot, book pool is almost always less expensive for computer books.

Cheaper
Bookpool.com has this book for $30.95. (Hint: search for 'FreeBSD'). It's $49.99 at bn.com. Do the math.

Re:Frequently...Sadly, this seems to be the trend with O'Reilly books. In trying to decide upon a book recently, I did some reading of the amazon comments for the book (though I buy my books from bookpool), and many of the O'Reilly books had comments about typos, code examples that didn't work, and even some formatting markup that made it into the book.
My theory is that O'Reilly has decided to cash in on their popularity while they are still considered the dominant computer book publisher. The explosion of titles from O'Reilly indicates this and probably also explains the lapse in quality.
Anybody have any inside info?

Re:$27.97 (free shipping) at Amazon
It's only $24.50 at Bookpool, but there's is a shipping cost unless you spend over $40 total.

Re:If you REALLY want to buy the book
But if people are interested in getting a good price rather than putting a commission into your pocket (and contributing to a company that abuses software patents), maybe they should order it from Bookpool instead, for $3 less than Amazon. (I don't have any affiliation with Bookpool.)
-
bookpool.com - $29.95 (but out of stock right now)

Re:$15 Cheaper at Amazon
It is 29.95 at Bookpool, although out of stock.

Re:little suggestion
Why would you post such a high price? You can get it much cheaper... $23.95.
BTW, the $ symbol tells everyone it is US currency, hence the US is redundant in your price post.

Re:Probably Most of Them..in
.NET they DEPRICATED IOSTREAM.H!!!At the risk of responding to an obvious troll (three exclamation points?), if you really were a CompSci major and (as you claimed downthread) working for the DoD/NSA, I'd hope you'd read ISO/IEC 14882-1998 before sounding off.
If you had read it, you'd know that iostream.h has been deprecated by the Standard and, further, this has been the case since the mid 90s, when the Standard Library was being finalised: as documented in the D&E, this was to ensure that compiler vendors' (probably non-standard) implementations didn't clash with the Standard one.
Since it's painfully obvious that you haven't read it and are, in fact, merely shooting your mouth off, we can also safely assume that the bit about your being a CompSci major and working for the DoD/NSA. Admit it: you're 25, single and live with your parents (although you did kiss a girl once).
To use your preferred demotic: yUO R TEH 5UXX0R!!!

Your Samba configuration is wrong
It's in the Samba configuration. It's something like "OS Level" and it will be set to some number, like maybe 50.
This number is how MS machines determine who is the Primary Domain Controller, basically the one with the highest OS level gets it, unless things are specifically configured otherwise. IIRC, Windows NT 4 has an OS level in the low 30s. Newer versions of Windows have higher OS levels, and server versions have higher levels than workstation or desktop versions.
So, all you have to do is use SWAT, or otherwise edit smb.conf, and set your OS level to some low number, like 1.
This site is a good introduction with lots of useful tips. If you really need to know Samba, though, I highly recomend this book.
