The lack of will to fight global warming let most of the scientist baffled toward the governments of the world. It's a little understandable, the global warming is so subtle (~2mm rise and 0.13 Celcius per year) that the frog analogy of Al Gore perfectly explain our lack of action. As of now, it's not possible to make a business case that, with X billions you'll save Y billions of natural disaster.

Machine learning is software generated by statistical algorithms fit to lots of data. Without the training data, the algorithms alone are quite useless. Pre-trained networks are essentially closed source, because the source is the training data.

There's lots of open source code for this work already. It boils down to who has access to the data. Tesla can turn on autopilot to collect data from its entire fleet for millions of miles traveled. Google doesn't have a fleet, so it wants to collect so much data with Android Auto, automakers are walking away.

Who would want to work for "Monkey Boy"? Microsoft is apparently not able to hire socially competent people. Apparently Satya Nadella was chosen because he was the least annoying person. However, he does not seem to me to be the kind of person who can handle the enormous conflicts inside Microsoft.

This is my guess: Someone at Microsoft said, "Google and Facebook are collecting data about customers and selling it; let's do that also." So Windows 8 was designed to try to sell "Apps", as though Windows was a particularly trashy cell phone operating system. I was shocked when I first saw the Windows 8.1 GUI. Utterly incompetent. Now Windows 10 is apparently trying to imitate Google Android, which has become more and more invasive.

People who have work to do have already learned the GUIs they need. Even if the design is imperfect, that's what they know. They don't want wild changes.

It's scary. In the last few months, Windows 10 has been shown again and again to be sloppily designed and implemented, as well as being spyware.

Judging from comments on Slashdot, people try to find some technical reason for Microsoft's policies. They apparently have difficulty imagining that Microsoft managers are as incompetent as they are.

So many here get their underwear riding up because they have to solve an abstract math problem?

Okay, say we do drop Algebra and higher from the common curriculum. Then we're going to go even lower in the list of math rankings by country. Perhaps it's because of the way it's taught, not because of the material. I distinctly remember hating word problems because they were always so inane. "If the flag pole is 10 feet tall and the sun is at a 30 degree angle, how long is the shadow?". I also remember having the teacher assign 50 problems in one night (2 through 100, evens only since the answers to odds were in the back of the book). Now, with this common core nonsense (no idiot left behind), we are just cramming more of this crap down kids throats.

What was lacking for me was the true application. I hated math growing up, and ended up being an engineer. It wasn't until I started to realize the cool things I could do that required math, such as tinkering in OpenGL, that I really started to latch on to it.

I'm curious, how is it taught in other countries that routinely get higher rankings in math/science? Is it a matter of teaching? a matter of culture? How do the Japanese view math? The Germans? Chinese?

This is still an overly simplistic view of economics, which itself is a pseudo science evolved from a bunch of hand-waving and unproven assumptions. If it weren't, there would never be any surprises on Wall St.

What's happening now is that that the overall household budget has shrunken, so originally they were paying $10/yr for clothing, and now they're paying $2/yr, but they're making $80/yr instead of $100/yr. So, the net effect is that their real spending power has shrunken. (numbers chosen for simplicity of understanding, real numbers do follow those representative trends)

So in the vacuum of economics, what you say is true. Reality, however, isn't so kind. The current outsourcing trends are akin to cutting your own throat. You can only bleed wealth for so long, before you're no longer wealthy.

The answer is not that people would work more. We're not going back to an economy where we used a different technique; we're going to an economy where we've cut back working hours by a high-tech technique, but didn't cut back costs.

Where we are going is an economy where productivity keeps increasing compared to labor hours spent. Let's take that to an absurd level: 1 person works full time, and grows all the food necessary for the country. What do the rest of the people do? This isn't actually a hypothetical question as robotics are already in play in agriculture and will only increase in the next decade. As robots get better and are able to build other robots, you see the effect spread. This scenario replaces "outsourcing" with "replacement labor" to remove workers from the pool.

Yep, just reinforces my statement above - economics has yet to become an actual science. We're still in the studying phases because we cannot model it accurately. It's much like trying to model brownian motion, weather, or solar flares, because individual human actions cannot be predicted and do have effects as they aggregate. Everything beyond that is an assumption based on historical activity. The mouse turned right the last 3 times, it'll turn right this time again... oops, left turn.

That is no longer the case, with the total labor force shrinking every year since 2006 [bls.gov]. It's actually worse than that, if you go further back.

We've been in a labor force bubble since 1970. Housewives gave way to working couples and middle-class families living at an extended standard-of-living (two people work, draw more income, and buy more stuff, living like rich people--we've normalized this, so they're just middle-class). We didn't replace those housewives with maids and servants in every household; on the other hand, we *did* get nice dishwashers, washing machines, and other tools to dramatically reduce the domestic working hour load.

You'll note that dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, and those other nice tools all arrived *prior* to the dual income family becoming standard. Why? Because the income from a single job has been degraded since the 70s as more and more of those middle class jobs exited via outsourcing, to be replaced by lower wage jobs, if at all. (something you have yet to discount)

Optimistically those 10 high paying american jobs become a combination of 10 mid to low-paying jobs. They're still employed! Yay!

For example: manufacturing a shirt used to require 479 labor-hours pre-industrial-revolution, a cost of about $4,000 at $8.25/hr (my state minimum); today, such a shirt costs $15, or 6.67 hours at $2.25/hr Chinese labor.

The answer is not that people would work more. Don't get me wrong- it pays well. You can retire early (I retired at 51) because the pay is high.

It sounds like your work never has tight deadlines. That's very nice. In my experience, that's not typical.

Programmers at the major contracting houses put in long hours. Programmers at consumer businesses put in long (and holiday) hours.
Programming at new development companies is insane. I had a friend who had a bed in his office, which also had showers, and food was provided.
On our big project, food was provided two meal a day and 7am to 9pm hours were typical. Around releases, hours were longer.

I don't know about the defense industry. I always got the impression Nasa was a pretty cushy programming job. I'm sure there are easy programming jobs out there.

Fast food was 2-3 hours of busy and 5 hours of mostly standing around doing light work. It's not really work to push 3 burgers around the grill unless you are counting standing up as hard work.

OTH, at exxon, they have a lot of standing desks. Because people's backs are too messed up to sit any more.

I'm sure some burger jobs are harder than others tho.

You're absolutely right: an AI must not learn from fairy tales. At the same time it must learn our fairy tales -- but not for morality. To have an idea of how humans think a strong AI must read our fairy tales with the goal of discovering our weaknesses, fears, prejudices, dreams, and beliefs.

No matter how you slice it, if you hold all else equal, but give everybody a house twice as big as it was 50 years ago, then *clearly* more productive capacity has been brought to bear. It's irrelevant whether it's encoded as a debt transaction or a cash transaction, somebody had to build and maintain houses, and it happened. We have more stuff. Debt is not negative-stuff.

This said, your link is very interesting. The 1440 hours annually figure it provides at the end was during a period of unusually low-labour, so let's compare it to http://www.businessinsider.com.... Looks like they still worked more than the Germans. Americans are working about 120% as much. Let's make every Friday a day off in the US, and you'll roughly match a period of unusually low-labour in preindustrial civilization :). Interesting note, even in the US, where labour has remained high, labourers work more than 10% less than they did 60 years ago.

Note the businessinsider.com links is for "full-time workers", and your link was for "laborers". It's probably as close to apples-to-apples as we're going to get without embarking on a huge research project. Obviously that does skim over part-time workers and phenomena like periods of time where women were more or less likely to be counted in the full-time labour pool (my understanding is that the 50s would be the outlier time period, and now and preindustrial are closer to one another).

My guesses:

1) Basically, Windows is dead. Countries will have to move away from using Microsoft products, since Microsoft has shown it cannot be trusted in ANY way. For example: Windows 10 phones home (A LOT) even with all reporting and telemetry disabled.

2) Microsoft wants to make money in the Facebook and Google way. Microsoft plans to mine all user data on all computers connected to the internet and sell the information.

3) The reason there will be no more versions of Windows is that Microsoft will do what Adobe Systems has done: Force users to move to a subscription model.

4) Windows users will isolate Windows from the internet, and use Linux on a different network with a cheap 2nd computer to connect to the internet. (But how to allow information interchange between the 2 networks?)

5) In response to users isolating Windows from the internet, Microsoft will make Windows stop working after a few days of no internet connection. Adobe Systems does that, in my experience, with CS6. (CS6 is the last version before the forced move to a subscription model.)

6) Satya Nadella, the new Microsoft CEO, was chosen because he was the least annoying candidate. He is apparently not the real controlling manager, but only someone to advertise.

7) Microsoft has a contract with secret U.S. government agencies to make Windows into what users consider to be malware.

8) Because Microsoft often releases buggy software, possibly because it is paid to do so by secret U.S. government agencies, Windows 10, with its many ways to connect to the internet, is now FAR less secure than before.

Not a guess, because verified by others: Microsoft is shockingly badly managed. The cover of the January 16, 2013 issue of BusinessWeek magazine has a large photo of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer with the headline calling him "Monkey Boy". See the BusinessWeek cover in this article: Steve Ballmer Is No Longer A Monkey Boy, Says Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The BusinessWeek cover says "No More" and "Mr.", but that doesn't take much away from the fact that the magazine called Ballmer Monkey Boy -- on its cover.

Slashdot commenters called Ballmer "Monkey Boy" for years before BusinessWeek called him that on the cover of its magazine.
