Old news - tried this 2 years ago
I don't get it. This is old stuff. I tried such a membrane at CeBit in Hannover almost two years ago. It was made by a Japanese firm and could register "only" four concurrent touchpoints, but it is still very similar to this.
It was delivered as a thin plastic film in a black plastic frame about one inch wide all around and with a USB cable sticking out the lower left corner. They had sizes for 32, 37, 40, 42 and 50 inch LCD/plasma screens and showcased two 42 inch screens running Vista at their booth.
I wonder if the membrane is strong enough to used as a table surface. One of these membranes with a cheap 42 inch LCD TV and an Asus EE-PC could be a very cheap way to make a "Surface computer". And I would love to put such a homebrew surface/table computer between my sofa and my lounge chair ... :-) -
A unit of scaremongering?
movies are being used here as unit of measurement
Actually they are being used as a unit of scaremongering, and a strange kind of filesharing that would be where one server holds every file in full, amounting to a total of 65 TB.
If they are talking about some FTPWelt.com kind of pay-for-download archive, there seems to be something fishy (in particular at this point in time) about the purported link between TPB and an alleged über-Camorra known as -OMG, shiver me timbers- "The Scene". -

PCWorld articles
Almost all links in PCWorld articles point to PCWorld articles. In particular all citations are PCWorld references only. Normally valuable documents contain lots of external citations. References to third party documents illustrate that the writer knows what she or he is writing about and that statements are evaluated by a larger community. PCWorld articles on the other hand are of extremely low quality. They contain almost no imformation. It often seems the writer has no idea what she or he is writing about. It goes even so far that PCWorld writers report about the Cebit without knowing how to spell Hannover (the Cebit is located in Hannover). Of course the PCWorld editors also miss such points. Who cares about PCWorld?

Re:Plumbing no longer taught at college either
It seems they did not teach German in your school either. Check your citation. The physicist's name is Erwin Schrödinger, or Schroedinger, if you have no Umlaut at hand.
;-)
Did anybody notice that there are many journals on the market which report every year about the Cebit in "Hanover". I doubt any of their fine journalists ever attended the Cebit. See also http://www.cebit.de/ and http://www.hannover.de/
And since the original posting is about an MSN article, why not have a quick look at this fine page: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7159401/

I was there with my Nokia 6600
But I had Bluetooth switched off.
It consumes too much power to keep it on anyway. Although it would be cool if CeBIT provided wireless internet access through Bluetooth througout the terrain. I know they did have an 802.11b network running last year, which was freely accessible to visitors.
One cool thing this year was the availibility of the CeBIT Mobile Fair Planner for Symbian-based phones. It was available for download on the CeBIT site (altough access to it required free registration). No more thick guide to plough through in order to find the exhibitors you're looking for. An exhibitor list (including search functionality), interior maps of the buildings hosting the fair, everything in my phone!
It was the first time I actually felt myself living in the twentyfirst century. :)
Now I hope that Nokia will soon release a Bluesnarfing-proof firmware update for my phone. -
knoppix 3.4
this is the same Cebit fair where knoppix announces/showcases their 3.4 release (Kernel 2.6 included in the bootCD).
-
Full 3.4 scheduled for March 18th-24th
Actually, the first fully official version of Knoppix 3.4 is slated to come out at CeBit (March 18-24), as per Klaus Knopper's mailing list message.

Sony PCV-W10 Desktop at CeBit last year
Sony had this wonder in their booth at CeBit 2002 almost a year ago (CeBit 2003 is a month away, can't wait!). It was one of the more interesting and unique products at the messe in my opinion, and that's saying a lot, seeing as it competed with the many thousands of gadgets at this 'Worlds largest trade show for information and telecommunications technology'. This is something I'd have in my livingroom. It looks good, has most the functionality of a computer, and a tv with DVD support. Tire of all that and fold up the keyboard - bam - a Stereo. For times when you need to enjoy the silence, it will atleast serve you as a clock. As Apple would put it, 'The center of your digital lifestyle'. We'll see more products like this in the future, I'm sure. When the youth of today (I'm included here) gets their first own apartment, why would they buy a TV, stereo, DVD player, and computer - when they can buy something like this? It does not perfectly replace any one of the abovementioned, but it's an excellent merge that in the end will be easier on the wallet, and a whole lot of cooler. / V

Re:Why don't you...
That is not the official CEBIT website. Moderators, fulfill your duty. The real thing is http://www.cebit.de/.

Re:CeBit is the largest trade show WORLDWIDETrue. I'll be there tomorrow. I hope it's not as full as last year...
Additional it may be interesting to the American readers, that there will be a "CeBIT america" next year in New York, which will be positioned against Comdex. (Heise reports here. In German, couldn't find the English announcement... I'm sure it's somewhere on www.cebit.de...).
Ambitious undertaking, will be interesting to see how they'll do. On the other hand there are already several CeBITs worldwide which AFAIK are doing quite well...

How about. . .
While I agree that cryptography CAN be used to hide sensitive information from a corrupt government that is by far not the only use: Encryption of sensitive business information that is sent through email, financial documents you don't want someone who steals your laptop to have access to, or personal notes that you don't want others who may use your workstation to see, that is just to enumerate a few. While the press release says that the German government does not recommend their software in "security sensitive areas" but since the product is open source one could imagine that this is only the first step in createing a heir to the PGP throne, which may be in need as NAI trys to dump that section. Government conspiracies are nothing new but it seems unlikely that they would create a new program(when one exists), make it open source, and expect people to flock to it like seagulls to food.

Re:Nordic countries in all this ?While this is great I suppose, I am surprised that they will not begin with the usual heavy-weight mobile-phone-friendly countries, such as Finland, Sweden..
I think the reason for that is, that DoCoMo holds a large share of KPN, the Netherland's biggest mobile phone operator, which in turn posseses a part of E-Plus a smaller german operator. I'd guess the picture is simillar in Belgium. They're planning to introduce the service in Germany at the CeBIT (biggest computer fair in the world), which would be in 10 days.

Re:allrighty then...Isn't there SOMETHING else going on in the computer world right now?
news.bbc.co.uk has a story called "Life gets serious for Linux" with a link to the CeBIT technology fair which is going on in Hannover from the 22nd to the 28th of March.

NOT a boycott, NOT a censorship case.Get the facts straight before screaming "censorship". Please.
CeBIT is a business-, not a consumer-oriented trade show, or at least the makers want it to be. Since Creative's plans involved (again) to have a very large, very loud booth praising their consumer-devices, CeBIT told them they couldn't do that. That specifically. Creative pulled out entirely, and booked IFA instead.
CeBIT has since changed its mind, but Creative don't want to change their plans again, understandably enough.
Details at (for example, this is in German): http://www.ix.de/newsticker/data /chr-11.09.00-002/. -
A load of hype
Why is it that everybody goes crazy when MP3 or similar triggerwords are mentioned?
Presentation of MP3 hardware or software is not banned from CeBIT according to these articles from c't and (German) PC-World. A link to the trade-show itself is utterly useless, since they only give out details to "accredited journalists".
What really happened is (according to above articles) that they don't want the consumer oriented presentation that Creative was going to give, since the consumer part of CeBIT has been relegated to CeBIT Home, another show altogether. They don't want the unwashed masses at the "real" CeBIT to give the suits and geeks some space to breathe.
So it is not the WHAT they banned, it's the HOW. -
