  1. My Flock Preview Release Review on Firefox-based Social Browser Flock Launches · · Score: 1

Flock had me skeptical from the screenshots (ugly and useless), but having actually used it, it's pretty gosh darn neat. The Shelf is an incredible killer feature. I've tried out a few similar extensions for Firefox, but none did it as smoothly and intuitively as Flock has. All it needs is a few hardcore snippet-management-tools, and it'll be my new favorite research program.

Likewise, the blog editor falls under the "pretty neat" status. The formatting gets eaten by Wordpress.com's post-parser (to filter out nasty javascript and other malicious evil), but that isn't a major downer, as it does tend to exhibit some weirdness like underline remaining after deleting a link. The WYSIWYG-editor part of it definately needs some work to be up to par with the rest of the browser.

Overall, I've been seriously impressed. For being a the first public release of a browser, it's feature-filled and non-crashy. This must be attributed to it being based on Firefox. All it needs is a few months of polish and I can unconditionally accept it as my new primary browser. As is, I'm giving the idea serious thought.

P.S.: I didn't use the del.icio.us integration, as I didn't really use the service much before. But now that it's seamlessly integrated into the browser, I'll try it out again.

And yes, I do live in Kansas and some of the elected-officials' actions here drive me batty. And the conservatives on the state board-of-education just gained a majority again, so we may be seeing a return of the Evolution hubbub. Meanwhile the state congress can't decide on how to give education extra money, so they get nothing. It's bi-partisan stupidity, except instead of being between Dems and Republicans it's between the Conservative and Moderate wings of the Republican Party.

  11. Re:In related news: on Extinction Of Human Languages Affects Programming? · · Score: 2, Informative

    According to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis:

    1. Differences in language structure will lead to different patterns of thought.
    2. A speaker's native language has a serious effect on their development of world-view.

Studies (Berlin & Kay, 1969) have shown that people perceive differences in color differently based on their language, satisfying tenet 1. Tenet 2 is generally believed to be unable to be proven or disproven using methods that anyone can think of right now.

Now, differences in thought are often more evidently reflected by differences in language, for it is language that often transmits thought. For example, the Tobrianders of Papua New Guinea think and speak in a non-linear matter. While many of us have been trained since birth to connect the dots, often in books of numbered dot diagrams, they emphasize patterns over linearity. By losing this language, we also lose, to some extent, their unique pattern of thought.

Quite frankly, I'd like to see you sum up complex philosophies in a two-hour movie, complete with action, plot, and Neo's lengthy dialogue. The Matrix isn't an end-all in philosophy. It's simply a springboard for interesting philosophy discussion. For example, what would you choose, meeting your destiny by sucumbing to fate and gaining the freedom of superpowers, or rejecting that destiny, retaining free will, but living a mundane existence? And there's quite a multitude of views on whether Cypher's really right or not. It's a supplement, not a replacement.

  16. Deus Ex - freakishly predictive on What Games Have Actually Affected You? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Deus Ex was an unbelievably good game. And it affected me a lot, some in good ways, some in bad. Suprisingly enough, it helped exercise my problem solving skills a lot. I also now unconsciously look for ventilation ducts everywhere I go.

It also raises some interesting questions about how much power a government should have. It includes a government that has imposed strict military control after a terrorist organization called the NSF played out a series of terrorist attacks. I don't want to spoil it by saying what's revealed past the first mission, but regardless, it scarily predicted a lot of the government's response to the terrorist attacks on New York.

The only people who I've met that haven't liked Deus Ex either haven't played past the first mission (which is IMHO the worst in the entire game) or haven't found a playing style that suits them yet (I personally became a Trinity/stealth-ninja/sniper).

  19. Engines sometimes enhance gameplay on Carmack On Doom III And The Evolution Of Graphics · · Score: 1

Some aspects of an engine have a large likelyhood of affecting gameplay. For example, once Quake was developed and you had the ability to aim vertically, and that changed gameplay quite a bit. While we haven't really had revolutions in gameplay quite that dramatic since, Doom III does offer new lighting technology, which can obviously be used to heighten suspense. It also has an effect on how objects could be seen.

So, to succinctly answer your question, an engine can have a very large effect on the gameplay. It's just that we haven't made any huge steps towards reality recently that affect gameplay in any way. And if you don't like the same-old gameplay that exists today, I suggest you play a fantastic game called Deus Ex. And Half-Life 2 will likely be revealed at E3.

I think you're a bit confused about how the ways are going. At any given time, they're developing several different specs for wireless communication. Some of these, such as the publicized 802.11a, b, and g are hardware-side, meaning they have to deal with the way these things are actually transmitted. Others are more software-side, meaning they have to do with encrypting data and whatnot. Furthermore, all of these (except for a few earlier strange circumstances such as 802.11a) are backwards compatible.

In short, the hardware you buy today WILL be usable in a year or two. It just won't be the fastest, bestest thing on the market. Think of it as Moore's Law translated to wireless communication.
