first amendment rights?frankly i don't see what we have to worry about from this republican. students in college are 18+; they are full adults. they can vote, they can enroll in the army and sacrifice themselves for the country should we go to war.
and i would hope that most people understand that college students are not children. they're on their own. the fact that they can vote demonstrates that they are trusted to be able to make THEIR OWN decisions on what's right, and on what's wrong.
since they can make their own decisions--why do they need some grumpy old, stuffed-shirt politician to do it for them?
not to mention the first amendment rights that it violates. freedom of speech--freedom to peaceable assemble--these are violated by restricting internet access (a means of speech) and by restricting co-ed visitations to dorms (a means of peaceable assembly, even if it be only a few people for a party or whathaveyou).
in short..it'll never happen.(((one more time to kill the pain)))

The First daVinci Web Site - Free Advertising :)
Well, If I could just plug myself (I forgot my passwd so I have to use AC), I was the first person in the world to organise a daVinci Web Log, back in Noveber '98. I haven't updated in a while, but you can have a peek it through the link I have on my other PDA weblog at otoh.cjb.net. There is a link on the top left sidebar.

Re:...but they're still charging for Version 3!
Yep, I somehow think people who want to buy a professional MIDI & audio sequencer will go for Cubase VST or Logic Audio or something. The bad part is that they run on a Mac or Windows, not Linux as of yet anyway.
I would like to see more open sourced quality music programs for Linux. TerminatorX seems cool, and you can actually do stuff with it even now. However, IMO it needs stereo sample support, some sort of sequencable triggering and a modular effects architechture (a plug-in kind or something) to really progress toward hitting the jackpot.
Just my 0.01 euros... -
Re:Surprise?Actually, this article shouldn't get any more comments than this one. Everybody already knows that open-source security models have the future, so is there really a point in debating all this again?
Actually, not everybody knows. The people making the attempt to fix the cheating in quake have a closed source solution. Find it here

Nothing to worry about
I recently received a message from some idiot claiming to report the vMac Project to "GNU Public License HQ" because our code is "sloppy". This guy was obviously an idiot because vMac isn't even under GPL, and we have a disclaimer saying that vMac is "use at your own risk" software (like many other free software projects.) I sent a pretty vulgar reply to the idiot, which clearly explained why he was an idiot. This was the only threat that we have ever received, so I don't think we (the Open Source community) have anything to worry about. Now, I'm just waiting for this idiot to try to threaten me about the Mace Project. The recently created Mace project is a LGPL compatibility layer similar to Wine, except that it brings Macintosh compatibility to Linux (and Windows, ick).

Re: Freedom
. To hide the origin of the HTTP request, active content including Javascript and applets must be disabled.
Proxomitron is very good at surgically removing specific Javascript without destroying the functionality of the page. I only have two side effects; MSN sites tell me to upgrade to IE5, which is what I'm using, and Yahoo's Club's Photo albums don't work because it doesn't look like I'm loading the images from their page. This is because the User-Agent and Refer are blocked. Since I then run through a proxy and the acutal address of my PC is 195.0.0.153 it's pretty hard for people to trace me, if I don't want them to.However, there are plenty of services where I'm happy to supply info and accept cookies, so the site can help me or supply me with something.
Getting back to the subject of this article - I do not believe that anonymity is a requirement for free speech. If free speech were really valued and protected, you wouldn't need anonymity.

Re:Action
If you really find the idea of sending an objective ID back to an application's source morally offensive, don't do business with that company. Vote with your pocketbook.
We would, and do, if they would just tell us up front - that's kind of the point. After reading the story and the comments, I have deleted the comet cursor class and cleaned out my windows/temp folder.
FYI: Just the other day I installed a great (Win9x) program called Proxomitron that filters an absolutely amazing amount of crap out of web pages with few side effects. I recommend it. (Version 3b is far more stable than the previous version)

Mirror Central - Help Wanted!Could anyone help out with this? I can't do this on my own - I've got piles of coursework to do already! To help in any way, however big or small, please visit the temporary page at http://www.lancs.ac.uk/ug/greenrd/mirror/ and sign up to the discuss mailing list or forum. Thanks!
(I'm only posting this anonymously because my email inbox is full and I don't want a flood of emails. It doesn't take a genius to find my email addresses, but please don't bother.)
An AC wrote:
what we need now is an example of a slashdot-mirror effect, where a controversial piece of material supressed by the authorities gets so widely distributed that they can't get to every copy of it.
Absolutely. We need a Mirror Central where people can volunteer to host controversial stuff that has been censored. This is no idle speculation - see above for URL. You could have a mailing list which thousands of people could sign up to (obviously not everyone would have the free space to host RealPlayer files, but there would be smaller stuff too) which would send out news about which sites are either:
- Under actual threat of censorship
- Highly likely to be censored (but what criteria would we use for this? Hmmm...)
- Actually have been shut down, but have been mirrored and could use more mirrors.
(Of course, you could get flooded by thousands of people claiming their sleazy website was shut down by Geocities and "It's Censorship!". Without debating whether it was censorship or whether it was justified [Terms of Service anyone?], there is a very simple solution to this - just sort by topic. Those who want to mirror, say, adult banner farms are free to do so - but I don't think there'll be many takers. Once the sleazeballs realise no-one is going to help them, they'll go away - sure, there'll always be the stupid ones, but this is a small price to pay for such a great tool for freedom of speech and expression. Anyway, more about this on the site and in the discussion groups - it's not completely black-and-white.)
You could also have a separate mailing list which would have regular news digests about sites which had been successfully rescued.
The only question is, who hosts Mirror Central? It almost goes without saying that they'll need to have a sufficiently unrestricted Terms of Service for our needs, and quite a hefty chunk of bandwidth. It needs to be a provider who is not easily scared by threats of litigation - and since, judging by their past record, the Church of Scientology might try to get something else about them removed soon, it'll need to be someone who can stand up to them. (!!!!)
Of course Mirror Central would itself be mirrored, but you'd need one or two high-bandwidth main URLs to list it by in search engines and directories - the latter simply don't go in for listing multiple mirrors for the same site.
We could also include sections and software on how to get round blocking software, and could get a huge number of hits by cross-linking with other anti-censorship sites (just think EFF!).
And perhaps it could do with a better name as well...
Right, anyway, time to stop talking and start acting. A search on "censorship mirror" on Metacrawler doesn't bring up any sites like Mirror Central, so it appears that no-one's successfully done this before (or maybe they have but it hasn't had time to show up on Metacrawler yet). Okay, I've just registered http://mirrorcentral.cjb.net as a temporary measure only - just to get the idea going and as a rallying point and a launching point. This redirect URL was working when I tried it just now, but if it isn't, the real URL is http://www.lancs.ac.uk/ug/greenrd/mirror/ . The site will initially contain an intro to what this is and two mailing lists (one for discussion of the idea and co-operating on the site, one for alerts of sites that need mirroring) - once we decide on a cool name we can register a domain name and do some serious site design (but who would everyone trust to be the owner? Hmmm... something to think about. I suppose in the long term you'd want a Mirror Central Foundation or whatever with stated objectives, so that the domain name(s) can't be legally misused by the registrant, but again, it would be good to get this up and running on an ad hoc basis ASAP).
The way I envisage it, Mirror Central wouldn't actually host or contain any mirrors itself. That way, as long as no court is stupid enough to rule that mere linking consitutes copyright infringement, libel etc. or whatever the alleged violation is (unfortunately, this is far from out of the question), mirrors can be attacked one by one but the centre is legally speaking untouchable. And, legalities aside, if we can build up Mirror Central into something really popular and interesting, it could become so popular that shutting it down would cause an unconscionable outcry!
Of course decentralisation is important - the less people rely on one centralised site, the better - mirrors should link to each other so that even if Mirror Central goes down people can still navigate. The license of the Mirror Central directory could be almost exactly the same as the Open Directory license - allowing free use and modification, but requiring an attribution link back to Central.
It would actually be extremely simple to write software to find a way in to the "mirror web", even if a large number of sites including Mirror Central were down - you could either use special keywords invented for this specific purpose thru search engines to find a way in, or just simple polling, or both.
[This was added at both top and bottom because
/. truncates long comments] Could anyone help out with this? I can't do this on my own - I've got piles of coursework to do already! To help in any way, however big or small, please visit the temporary page at http://www.lancs.ac.uk/ug/greenrd/mirror/ and sign up to the discuss mailing list or forum. Thanks!--

Old softwareI don't know about source, but there are a lot of old games floating around out there under the category of "abandonware". I recommend Home of the Underdogs, The Gaming Depot, and Gangsters.org for good sources of old software.
Checking those links right now, I see that Underdog's is currently down for maintenance, but I recommend checking them periodically as it is one of the best sources of quality old software. Note that while abandonware is not always sanctioned by the companies who originally created the games, most abandonware sites make an effort not to provide games that are still being marketed or whose manufacturer's request that the games not be made freely available. If you hold extreme negative views regarding what constitues software piracy then you may want to stay away from abandonware. I can't speak for The Gaming Depot, but Underdog always honors requests from game manufacturers requesting removal of games.

Programmers tools
search for fravia and mammon's mirrors, read a lot from over there to get used on cracking/reverse engineering techniques/tricks - i saw url upper, so i wont repeat them. Cracking and reverse engineering is like anything else, it needs practice. On the other hand, ORC Tutorials are definitively the bests papers you can read around. they cover theory and are not so much about practice as they look. Programs you need: ** soft-ice - THE debugger around for dos/windows platforms. and gdb for un*x systems. you can do nearly all you want with these. ** IDA (Interactive DisAssembler) - THE disassembler. dont trust its name, it can reverse anything via an interresting technique called flirt. you have the compiler, you can decompile. (java, c, pascal, whatever...). works as well for un*x systems and support several processors. you can get both from http://protools.cjb.net. anything else needs apropriate tools, so look at you favourite search engine.

IceWM, on the other hand, had been Gnome-compliant for a long time and supports KDE too.

Is it just me, or has YahooGeoCities been slowing
down since this SlashDot article was posted? I wonder if thousands of users are all trying to simulatiously swap their GIFs for JPGs & PNGs.
BTW: I converted all my GIFs to PNGs and mostly the transparency fell over. I can work 'round it, and infact many of the images have moved to JPG. Gives me a challenge for the week.
It is about time the web gave up on GIFs and properly supported PNG. Alpha channels would make the web rock, but lets not stop there - I've requested that YahooGeoCities support "rar", a better-than-zip archive format. Request your favourite format too.

Bladeenc, L3enc, LAME & frontends
If you want a high bitrate of 160k you should probably use bladeenc. I just read the speed section of the homepage. On the other hand L3enc works well with lower bitrates (120k). Since I like small & good stuff I would naturally go for l3enc. But there is also LAME which is a patch to the ISO mp3 encoder source, allows VBR (variable bitrate encoding) and is 5 times faster than the original. You might want to try some batch frontends that provide CDDB acess to ease your work. Check out at freshmeat, I've seen lots of those.

MTWK
That explains it! I was WONDERING why the stock price has steadily been creeping up in the past week or so. I bought it at $5 ~1yr ago, and it's gone down to about 2 something in that time. I was sure I lost my money (Like SYQT). And then this week it approached, and hit, 5! Woa! I said, I was confused what to do (But RHAT now covers all my losses, 100 @ 75 today sold.
;) Now I don't have to worry about MTWK, since, it seems, MOT will pay me. (OR should I still sell now if I can get 6.25 or more?)
On another note, I was wondering, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? Isn't this like insider trading or something? Or maybe the rumours were going around, and enough people believed them? But still, is distributing information like that on the up and up, or..? Just curious.

(Ohh, wow, Slashdot works with Lynx now, great/finally!) (And I still can't understand why COSFF (CORL), MTWKF (MTWK), etc, change(d) their symbols?! Screws my E*Trade acct up a little. (Mainly annoying.)) -
I agree... ...to a degree...First off, I've not seen BWP, but I've heard enough to convince me that it is a genuinely innovative and original story. Just not one I'd care to watch, but that's ok as I don't have to like everything.
Second, I agree that Hollywood (as it stands) is not capable of producing stories of this kind. I'm not so sure it's a case of "over-writing" as a case of "over-glossing". Shine is fine, but when you have no texture, nothing to grasp onto, it's a mess.
Third, BWP is no "Internet Movie". It was promoted on the Internet, sure, but the movie itself was never tied in any way to the Internet.
(I'll sneak in a quick plug for the Free Film Project, where volunteers are working together to produce genuine Internet Movies, for even less than the BWP cost.)
I think that the success of the BWP shows, once and for all, that Independent filmmakers are producing what people want, rather than what people get told they want. This -may- shake up the film industry, in a big way. If Independent film starts being played more in the big cinemas, Hollywood is in for a rough ride, and one it might not survive, for all it's money and glamour.

There is no God!
The one-god religions are patriarchal constructs designed to oppress and manipulate the population, specifically women, through fatalism and a male-oriented viewpoint. Evolution is a very valid scientific theory, and just because some bible-bashers are incapable of understanding it does not invalidate it. The whole of America should be ashamed of this recent decision. I am thankful that I live in Australia, where the only stupidity of this sort relates to meaningless Internet censorship laws (and the odd one-nation twit being roasted by the media).
America : de-evolution in motion.

IP Masquerade ResourcesI wrote this in one thread, but I'm guessing it'll be too buried for a lot of people to get to (or it'll get moderated down, blah blah blah).
http://ipmasq.cjb.net is the URL for the Linux IP Masquerade Resource page. Once there, consult the IP Masquerade mini-HOWTO (v1.76-Jul18.99), patches for older kernels, the mailing list, the IP masquerade application collection (if you want to configure that one pesky piece of Internet software just right.), the TrinityOS step-by-step documentation for IPMASQ and network security, and even goodies for people on dynamic (gasp!) IP connections.
It's an excellent site, which was truly an invaluable resource when I was trying to put the jumper cables to my own IP MASQ'ing gateway box. Even my Amiga has no problem getting through to the outside world via. the Linux box.
Good luck. It can be a little tricky in spots, but the end result is worth it.
-
Re:Masquerade resourcesI've recently set up IPMasquerade on my home box (kernel 2.2.10, i486) DCC, FTP and the like all work fine, once you get the appropriate modules loaded and functioning.
One thing to be careful of is to make sure you load the modules to keep an eye on the proper ports. I had everything but DCC running, and was scratching my head for a while, until I realized that the ip_masq_irc module which deals with such things was looking at the default (6666?) port, and not any of the others (6667, 7000) that are frequently used.
Seriously. If you need help with IP Masquerading, check out http://ipmasq.cjb.net
... the IP Masquerade Resources Page. Complete with mini-HOWTOs and links to useful documents like TrinityOS for ensuring your system is remotely secure.Good luck. It's a little bit of work, but once you wrap your mind around it, it's a piece of cake.

I can relate -- sort of
Back in March I started a website that hosts user reviews/linux info/general info, etc for Transmonde laptops. http://transmonde.geek.net/ A small company in CA, good product, known for supporting Linux, etc. I started it so that people like me could have more independant information about their laptops instead of reading reviews in big magazines and only relying on their website. You might call it a user-group.
Anyway, a few months ago, some people started getting suspicious of me. I would get e-mail asking if I owned stock in the company, if I worked for them, etc. Transmonde just seems too good to be true. :( There was a thread on usenet about me -- questioning my position in the whole thing. I have not received a single review from anyone ever since that happened. I don't honestly know if it's because of what was said in the thread on comp.sys.laptops or not, but have suspicions.
Later on (in May/June), I was called a marketing ploy! I don't know what possessed me, but I put up my webcam and gave posted the URL for it, I directed them to a URL that they could look me up as a student of a university in MN (how could a company fake that?), I wrote up an "about me" page as well explaining who I was and why I bought a laptop from Transmonde. I don't know what people think of me anymore, maybe I shouldn't even care; I almost think my credability is damaged forever to the comp.sys.laptops people.
Just sharing my not-so-similar experience.
The moral: Your word is meaningless, get over it.

...and keep redesigning for each new protocol
I have a semi-acronym for you; ICQ - That's not e-mail, would it be taxed? What about IRC? What about "WinPOP"? Does a company have to pay for internal mail? What about each new communications protocol as it pops up?
The stupid thing about all of this is it's doing a band-aid approach, that is to say it just picks one particular arbitrary thing and targets it without any understanding of overall concepts.
The only thing that might work would be a plain "packet tax". Even then, the Internet is too dynamic to make it workable.
Anyway, these people already get their tax through ISPs.
This is just another bit of stupidity by a bunch of suit-wearing technophobic dinosaurs. I bet they think their documents are stored "in Word". ("I tried to open a Jay-pegg in Word and all I got was gobbledigook. The stupid computer's broken again" - LUsers)

I also have about 8 Swatch "Autoquarz" watches (like the Seiko Kinetic) and a Solar Swatch. I have too many Autoquarzes to keep them all running, but I can mostly keep the Solar running just by leaving it somewhere that gets a little sun.
On the other hand, I had a solar-only radio and had a lot of problems keeping that charged - being able to wind my new radio is a major advantage.
I guess I'm saying that we should have as many ways to power things as we can think of, so keep the kinetic powering of laptops going, but also work on embedding solar panels into the lid.
Now if Jade Mountain would just help me work out which solar kit I need for my Sharp Actius...

Just do what the Europeans do
As an Australian, I'm going to do with this bill what the Europeans do with stupid EU legislation. I'm going to ignore it.
After a few test cases it will be thrown out, it's completely unworkable.
There was a wonderful story in this week's " This is True" about New Zealand censors being required to view all the scenes in computer games to rate them, but simply not having enough time (12 hours of video, 100 hours gameplay - it's not like watching a 90 minute movie).

Convergence isn't mandatory
I have a Rio (SE + 32MB). I like that it just plays music. I have a mobile phone. I like that it's good at phone calls. It's cute that I can set alarms on it, and apart from wanting someway to hear it when I'm listening to my Rio, these two units don't need to be merged.
Anyway, the combined price of the two units would be somewhere around, lets see, US$1,300 - and things only get more expensive when they're converged.
P.S. moving parts == bad. solid state == good. 96MB should be enough for a while...

A better forum for SETI(@home) discussionRather than posting your SETI@home stuff here, you should join the SETI Club @ Yahoo. We've got 370 members already and discussion about the SETI@home clients and heap of other SETI stuff is going on as you read this.
We've also got a Team on SETI@home. You can find out info about it, along with tips on optimising your SETI@home client software on the Club Team homepage.
Enjoy,

Hah! Yeah, right..
(Yeah write?
;)
Corel had CorelDraw for OS/2, Corel *WAS* Supporting OS/2, they dropped that.
Corel made their Office suite for Java available, they were supporting that.
Hmm, how strange, these two officially supported platforms ports of Corel S/w, aren't listed in your list of platforms? Why is that?
Because Corel *IS* A flake. Period.
I have no faith in Corel coming through. If by some miracle, Corel manages to take over ~50% (+/-) of the M$-Windows Office suite market, and are placed in a good position to grow greater, I'm sure that Linux will just be a thing of the past.
Corel making a Linux distro does sound interesting, it may be enough to cement them to Linux, but I'm not counting my chickens before they're hatched. (So to speak. ;)
As for desperation, I agree.
And WordPerfect is NOT a 'freebie', it's closed source proprietary technology, which requires you to register it (provide personal information) JUST to use it!
I also saw somebody say that it's a 'trial', I was assuming it's fully functional real version, but if it's trial -- more proof of desperation.
FUD is bad. (He says, to the Linux community, Linus included)
(You guys have _NO_ reason to defend Corel, providing their s/w 'free of charge', is the only real way they and SO have to gain (relatively speaking) large market share quickly, this article is proof of that strategy helping them.)

Already available! (Don't use 2.3)
Hey all! Yeah, I noticed that, and I think it's GREAT!
BUT! I do *NOT* think this is a reason to use 2.3. After all..
v2.0 and 2.2 already _*HAVE*_ a rw driver!
I have been wondering for QUITE a while why it wasn't included in 2.2, and I found out when I went to go d/l a newer version of the driver. It was rewritten at 2.1.13x, the very end of 2.1.x, so there was little (if any) chance for a major thing (ro-rw? Big!) to be included in 2.2. However, I d/l'd it, and installed it on 2.2. (2.2.0pre(Something) iirc. ;) And I'm still using it. (2.2.9) Works fine/great!
So yeah, this is NOT a reason to use 2.3, however, since 2.3 recently branched, it MIGHT be okay to grab stuff out of 2.3 and replace the 2.2 stuff with it yourself, but I think the better idea is grabbing each individual driver, seeing what the author has to say about using it with 2.2, and replacing the current with it. The page for the hpfs (rw) driver is
Read-Write HPFS Driver for Linux, http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mikulas/vyplody/h pfs/index-e.cgi
So, go check it out! There's a chance that 2.3's is newer, but I REALLY doubt it! Hope I could've been of help!
(Actually, I posted a similar question on the 2.2.7 (or 6?) article, asking about the hpfs modifications in that 2.2.x)

Just wait
The 'net - in fact this very forum - make this sort of speculation unnecsesary. All we need is a couple of rich optimists to front up the dosh, and report back as to whether they get a product that works. Then we slashdot the place.
Duh,
Kris.

Me too, me too...
I've actually had someone question my signature. The bank computers asked me to do it again a while ago. I've recently radically simplified my signature, and I've _almost_ got it down. I'm 25 - pity me.
Seriously, who writes anymore? I can't remember the last time I hand wrote more than a single sentence.

Re:What's needed to interface this puppy to a PC?
Makes me wish I could have sourced a Sony Ultralight down here in Oz, rather than the Sharp Actius I've got. I spotted the FireWire, but I prefer local support...
Is there any way of getting a FireWire port into a notebook / ultralight - does anything run fast enough? - My choices are really limited to USB, PCMCIA & IRDA 1.something (stop laughing).
(How fast _does_ PCMCIA go?)

Re:Great Use for Camera Memory when not taking pic
There's a couple of MiniDisc cameras that play audio MDs. Have a look at;
http://www.hip.atr.co.jp/~eaw/minidisc/md_data_t able.html
A bit old now, and they don't appear to support USB, or anything useful, but it's a step...

HPFS updates?
What's this about HPFS updates? This is the first time in a while (unless I'm mistaken) I've seen this. I've already got the hpfs-rw driver, so I don't want this to replace it with the ro one. And if it is replacing it with the rw one, then that probably means it trying to patch the kernel will fail miserably?
hmm, it's using a hpfs_fs.c (which it is patching), which is a file I don't have. (but is in the dir where I moved the ro to.) So, we're still updating the read-only driver?! WHY?!
PS: This driver has been available for a WHILE, just so fellow OS/2'ers know. ;) (since 2.1.x) Look for version.. 1.90 or above, iirc.
Also, where is there a good, descriptive changelog? (edge is just.. the basics.)

Gestures
"A.S.L. uses finger spelling for uncommon words and about 6,000 gestures for common words. It's complicated to explain gestures to computers."
I use a product called "Pop-Mouse" from Pointix. It listens to a small set of gestures and allows me to directly run programs or fake keystrokes, or popup a menu of options. I have one set of apps, one set of folders and one set of "stamps" (fragments of text) that I use very often, plus a bunch of other things (like running my MP3 player, or pressing F5 to refresh).
The gestures it allows are; Clockwise circle, Anti-Clockwise circle, shake left-right, shake up-down. It also monitors the (middle of the) edges of the screen, and can be modified by SHIFT and CTRL.
This program allows me to basically operate my PC one-handed with a single 4-button wheel-mouse. I only need to move to the keyboard when I'm doing an extended amount of typing, which is slowly becoming less frequent. Common text fragments I have on my stamp menu include my various e-mail and web addresses for entry into forms. I'm considering purchasing a set of foot pedals, but then I'd have no use for my left hand at all.
Keyboards aren't the way to head, gestures are. Does anyone else have anything that listens to gestures?
Kris.
