My son recently bridged into Boy Scouts, so I have been looking at devices like this. How good is your experience with these? How quickly does it recharge in good sunlight? Do you find it works pretty well even with high draw items such as cell phones (Droid X, standard battery)?

I put it in the "pretty good" range.

To fully recharge from depleted, it can take a couple of days (according to the web, depending on light etc) to recharge with modest sunlight (which is why I have two). It will recharge from a wall pretty quickly as a second option. It comes with a micro-usb cable for that purpose.

I don't have a direct comparison to your droid ... but I've charged my Motorola Krzr and then my iPod with it, and it showed as still mostly full. I don't consider either of these to be really heavy draw items.

Conversely, when I charge my Tom Tom with it, it's fully depleted and needs to recharge for a fair bit. This, I consider to be pretty heavy draw and is pushing the limit.

To give you a reference ... when I first bought it, I thought I'd be a clever guy and run my USB speakers from it. Well, it simply can't keep up with a sustained level like that ... but, I have another set of rechargeable USB speakers that have LiOn batteries ... and it charges them without difficulty and then they run for hours. (I recommend the speakers highly ... they rock and run a good 8 hours on a charge. 158 grams each, 1 will do, two rocks.)

It's really marketed as something you can keep in your car or on your backpack to recharge your phone on the go. It probably couldn't give you enough juice to run it.

So, it's really good at handing over its charge to something that isn't making a continuous draw. I've not used it extensively enough to have really good data points on just how long the recharge cycle really is ... but the case it's in is fairly rugged, and it comes with a carabiner to attach to packs as well as a plastic mounting thing you could put inside your windshield.

Don't look to run your gameboy or GPS from it ... I think it's really only 650 ma or something. I'd definitely say it's worth having one, even though it's not going to cover every situation.

For the price I spent for it at Wal Mart, I was very happy with it. I've definitely used it to charge my phone and iPod several times. It charges decently enough, and if it's pre-charged before you need it is when it's most handy.

Elon is cutting the fat out of conventional rocket costs, and I applaud him for that, but that only takes the cost per kg down from it's weight in gold (for the Space Shuttle), to three times its weight in silver (for the Falcon 9). The actual energy cost of getting to orbit (8.7 kWh/kg) runs about $1/kg at typical retail electric rates. An efficient transportation system would run something like 4 times the bare energy cost, which works out to about the cost of UPS shipping or ground beef. So long as launch costs are measured in their weight in precious metals, rather than ordinary day to day items, space will be stupidly expensive and limited to a very few people. It should also be a hint you are doing it wrong if you are so far above what physics says the cost could be.

I used to work for Boeing on launch vehicles, advanced propulsion, and the Space Station. Now that I'm retired I am writing up my ideas on a better way:

* Leverage multiple good ideas to get cost savings that multiply together. Apply these ideas in several projects and systems that build on each other
* Use less of or eliminate conventional rockets, because they are inefficient and expensive
* Design for re-use and recycling in orbit to lower hardware and supply cost
* Use materials and energy in space to cut down how much you need to bring from earth
* Build infrastructure to make things cheaper over time instead of exactly as hard and expensive as the last time.

I just bought my first batch of bitcoins. After I saw the EFF was taking them I decided to read up on them...and I like the system alot. I figured, why not toss a few bucks in (couple of hundred $$ actually, figured if I want people to use them, I should have a few to sell off to people).

My verizon rebate card wouldn't work with the exchange that takes cards, so I ended up sending a check and some cash to some guy who was offering an exchange service personally. Worked like a charm though, I was a bit nervous about it.

Last week when I locked in the deal, the rate was about $.23 per bitcoin, it looks like the average trade price is now up to about $.25 though.

This is a fiat currency just as any other fiat currency has been, and there are conventions within the accounting protocols to make sure that the currency can't easily be inflated. It is the inflation aspect of this currency that is the big issue.

There isn't much in terms of groups or individuals engaged in the exchange of bitcoins to anything else, but that is something relative. That is both because it is a new concept, and because of the nature of those who are running this.

This currency is depending upon scarcity and basic economics of supply and demand, where those who are investing into the concept are hoping that the demand will eventually drive up the value of these virtual coins. That isn't necessarily a bargain I would want to buy into, and the allocation of the wealth is sort of egalitarian instead of relying upon a single person hoarding all of the wealth at the beginning. If you strip away the crazy initial wealth distribution system, it is no different than other fiat currencies.

An interesting counter point here is the establishment of the Deutschemark in West Germany following WWII. In order to get the German economy going again, every German citizen was issued a certain amount of money (I think about 1000 marks but I'm not sure of the exact amount) and then told to spend or keep that money as they saw fit. The Mark has never had any sort of backing other than the faith of the German people to buy something with it in the future. It was eventually replaced with the Euro, but even the Euro still is based in a large part on this initial wealth give-away to jump start the German economy in the late 1940's. Other than buying products in Germany with a Mark, it never had any real value at all.

(I'm making these remarks somewhat tongue-in-cheek... I'm not particularly zealous about animal rights. But I do think that systemically perpetrated suffering while the animals are alive presents a moral problem, and realize we have a system that, well, presents it.)

But let me tell you, it's no myth: usually Apple gets interfaces near perfect. No one beats them in that aspect. Now, don't get me wrong... I admire the free software ideal, and many Linux distros are fine-looking and quite user-friendly these days. If I couldn't run OSX, I'd not mind too much moving to Mint, for example. (Windows, on the other hand... yuck.)
