An even worse scenario.

What if you were on vacation far away and you were put on some terrorist list. Then on your way back you were held for a while, shipped over to lebanon where people beat you on your way to a syrian prison (presumably because the US and the syrian governements have signed a "please torture our prisoners because it's illegal in our country" treaty) . Once at the syrian prison what if you were tortured daily for 10 months. And then mysteriously let go.

It could happen

Dude, it was documented BEFOREHAND that Republicans pressured Pakistan to nab some bad guys during the DNC. And there it was, just as planned, on the 4th day of the convention.

I suppose this is a concept that is hardly difficult for a thinking person to unearth, but as no one above my threshold has yet commented upon it, I'll take the soapbox.

This sort of hacktivism is nothing more then the digital analogue of a violent protest. While I most certainly do not agree with the platform and politics of the GOP, I believe that it is these hackers that pose a greater danger to my 'free speech.' While the Republicans have paid to host a web site and run a server in order to communicate their vision to the world, this wonderful group of people has decided not to fight back with cogent argumentation and stunning logic, but rather with a wildly underwhelming attempt to flood the server.

This sort of free campaign fodder offered to the Republicans can only harm Kerry's cause (though he is no prize pig himself...). Just wait for the War on Terrorism to go electronic: I can't wait for a digital reprisal of Ari Fleisher's 2001 declaration that "People have to watch what they say and watch what they do."

It's time people began to think. I honestly believe that a logical policy analysis reveals the truth. Left to themselves, people reading campaign literature from either side should be able to discern the better candidate. Even card-carrying GOP members that plan to vote a straight ticket deserve to learn what their party stands for and believes.

Now flip the coin. Suppose it were Republicans DDOS'ing progressive web sites such as Salon.com, Kuro5hin, or (heaven forbid) Slashdot. Shouldn't we all have the right to publish in peace? Attack my logic and my political views if you'd like. I'm not here to argue today, but it seems to me that this is obviously a "bad idea."

Yesterday, a wonderful article was published in Salon regarding planned protests of the GOP convention. Article summary: "If militants violently disrupt the GOP convention, it could be Chicago 1968 redux -- and Christmas in August for the Bush campaign." There is nothing like a free victory in a battle not fought.

We recognize the right to free speech, but I personally believe in the right of anyone to be heard. By my personal moral code, the correct way to respond to a man shouting wildly on the street is not to toss a brick his way, but rather to engage in conversation.

So please, think. It might work.

one vote for a third party candidate is a 'wasted' vote, then it's just as 'wasted' on the republicrat, err democans. The value of one vote doesn't change because of who you vote for, it only changes if you cheapen it in your own eyes by voting for someone you don't like just to not vote for someone you despise.

The funny part is this theory of a "wasted" vote now ensures that a third party candidate will never even make it into the debates for the presidential election. After Ross Perot Made it in 1992, the Republicans and Democrats were scared shitless. They both conspired to keep third parties out of presidential elections Now you must poll at 15% in the polls to be included in the presidential debates. These polls aren't controlled by the government, they are run by private news organizations! Which really means they are controlled by money.

So, by simply enforcing the idea that "third party is throwing your vote away" people don't even get to hear from third party candidates since they don't even mention them in the polls. On top of that, by not voting for third party candidates you are ensuring that they never get federal funding. (I think you need 3 - 5% to get federal funding).

If you think the 15% mark is ok, consider that Jessie Ventura polled at 10% before the gubernatorial debates in Minnesota and won the election after the debates with 37% of the vote.

It's obvious that Kerry and Bush are very alike on key issues, they are both for bigger government (despite what bush may say), they are both pro illegal immigration, pro outsourcing, pro interventionism/war, pro globalization. America is often said to be the land of choices, but what exactly is the contrast here? Gay rights? Or some other domestic issue where the two parties can fracture our population and pit them against one another so they ignore the bigger picture that our government keeps growing and spending, and selling us out to globaliziation?

Our country is being taken away from us, and no one seems to care enough to see it.

The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc. - who has become active in the re-election effort of President Bush - prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O'Dell's company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election.

O'Dell attended a strategy pow-wow with wealthy Bush benefactors - known as Rangers and Pioneers - at the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch earlier this month. The next week, he penned invitations to a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser to benefit the Ohio Republican Party's federal campaign fund - partially benefiting Bush - at his mansion in the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington.

The letter went out the day before Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, also a Republican, was set to qualify Diebold as one of three firms eligible to sell upgraded electronic voting machines to Ohio counties in time for the 2004 election.

Here's the truth: after the 1998 Miami mayoral election was invalidated because an unusually large number of convicted felons had voted, the State of Florida hired an outside contractor to purge felons from the election rolls. Unfortunately, due to sloppy programming, many eligible voters with similar names were mistakenly removed as well. Even worse, these voters did not learn they had been removed until they reported to their designated polling places on the day of the election.

However, post facto analysis showed there was no correlation between the mistakenly removed voters and their race or voting preference. In fact, the contractor's refusal to take such factors into account actually contributed to the confusion.

And in the end, several thousand felons still voted in the 2000 election despite the purge, and 68% of them voted Democrat.

Of course, nobody should be surprised by this anymore.

Yes, turbo diesel cars get incredible mileage, but the particulate emissions -- despite dramatic improvements over the past decade -- still fall near the bottom of the heap.

So, if you want to improve your mileage to save a couple of hundred dollars a year and/or to reduce dependance on foreign oil, a diesel is definitely the car for you.

On the other hand, if you're concerned about that grey haze hanging low in the sky that you notice every morning driving to work and wonder about what it's doing to your lungs, you might want to consider other technologies.

Ok, if you want to talk about lies and liars--and imply GW Bush (I assume that's who you are implying?) is a liar--what's an example of a lie he told?

Too many to even list here, but here's a typical example (from the Center for American Progress claim vs. fact db):

Bush knew, or should have known, that his claim was false.
