This guy tried to rob McDonald’s with pointy
I think that mental instability and social issues is at the heart of this tragedy, not terrorism nor insufficient power to monitor or detain. He actively tried to be detained, to no avail, and made himself well enough known to the authorities.

Re:May I suggest
In the developed world, we do not feel obliged to be the worlds policeman and do not fund our services according to that idea.
Yes, they do tend to get a lot of money but it's not limitless.Your use of the royal "we" is almost certainly mistaken. Even humble Canada is quite active in the use of its armed forces around the world.
Canada extending anti-piracy mission near Somalia
Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Operations
Canada is active in all manner of UN peace operations. Since the first peacekeeping operation in 1956, Canada has accepted frequent requests to join UN operations around the world, whether in Cyprus, Bosnia, Haiti, or elsewhere. To date, over 125,000 Canadians have served in close to 50 UN missions
Canadian Armed Forces completes military mission in Afghanistan
It would be easy to show similar commitments by Britain, Australia, and many other countries.
You are correct that about funding in that most of Europe is not meeting its defense spending targets agreed to within the NATO alliance.
Why you think that not meeting your defense obligations and misspending what you do have constitutes being part of "the developed world" shows the pitiful state of most of Europe's militaries. Even Britain is decimating its armed forces.

Re:Heck, we probably already fund them
Hospital
Hamas using UN ambulances
Bombing at gaza school, probably from hamas rocket falling short
Hamas rockets in two different UN schoolsThis isn't rocket surgery, not by a long shot. Hamas really is "the bad guys." Haven't even started on the tunnel stuff yet, and them using them as weapons storage. And commandeering all those materials meant for housing, and instead built it up for the sole purpose of terror, war, and screwing over the civilians.

How many terrorists have the TSA caught and prosecuted?
Just replying to your comment.
As for the citation:
I though it was 4 but it's actually 2 which resulted in more arrest earlier this year. I cannot find an article although I remember reading it on CBC.ca

Re:War of government against people?
Canada?
Is that the country with strict gun laws that just had a mass shooting where the killer was at large for several days?
But no, such an event in a country with strict gun laws doesn't fit the narrative you want to hear, now does it?
Canada? The country with 1/4 the firearm related death rate and 1/7 the firearm related homicide rate as the USA? Is that the narrative you were looking for? Obviously they need more guns up there for self defense against mass killers.

American does not have "increasing" internal violence.

Re:Education, not laws
Excellent post and as far as I'm aware you're quite right, Neo-Nazism simply hasn't become a real problem in Western democracies.
As you say, "awareness" is part of the problem. You aren't aware, and neo-Nazism is a problem in Europe.
'Like 1930s Germany': Greek Far Right Gains Ground
Nowhere else in Europe are neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists profiting as greatly from the financial crisis as in Athens. As they terrorize the country with violence, the police stand back and prosecutors are powerless.
Kotleba, whose organization has long agitated against Slovakia’s Roma (Gypsy) minority, branding them as “parasites,” once belonged to the now-outlawed Neo-Nazi Slovenská Pospolitos (Slovak Community) movement that praised the Nazi puppet government that ruled the country during World War II. Bloomberg reported that Kotleba openly admires praised Jozef Tiso, president of the Nazi satellite state in Slovakia during World War II, which dispatched thousands of Jews to Nazi concentration camps. Kotleba, a 36-year-old former high school teacher, has been notorious for sporting Nazi-style uniforms in public, and also repeatedly arrested and sued for spreading racism and hate (no such charges have ever stuck, however).
Russia: Far-Right Nationalists And Neo-Nazis March In Moscow
Neo-Nazis form expanding networks beyond national borders
The cooperation between right-wing extremists from different countries is gaining strength. Experts warn that this phenomenon could have dangerous consequences.
Neo-Nazi parties on the rise in Europe, Jewish group warns
BUDAPEST, Hungary -- The World Jewish Congress said Tuesday it is greatly concerned about the emergence of what it called neo-Nazi parties in Europe, singling out Greece's Golden Dawn, Hungary's Jobbik, and Germany's National Democratic Party.
A study presented at the congress's assembly in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, highlighted the links among the growing strength of such extremist groups, the European economic crisis and latent Nazi-type tendencies in Europe.

Re:Priorities....
but the wind-farms are a question of survival of the human civilization.
Hardly. If windfarms dropped off the face of the earth, you might need to find 1-3% from somewhere else, like hydro plants sitting idle, or from nuclear reactors which have been shutdown or furloughed for maintenance. Hell, in Ontario we produce so much electricity that we sell it at a 75% loss to the US, and we're not even at peak generating capacity. In fact, these "green energy" programs are going to drive up our electricity prices by 42% in the next 5 years.
Do you hear that sounds? It's the death of manufacturing and industry where I live.

SARS and air travel ..
While there is such a close proximity between the avian population and humans in certain societies, we can expect to see more of the same. That and air travel and I don't mean of the avian kind ref.

Not surprised
One of her own comments is: "Glass was not on and I honestly don't use it much while driving..."
A recent court ruling here in Canada is that even touching an unpowered cell phone is enough to get a ticket. I am not surprised that wearing an unpowered Glasses is not OK as well.

Re:What problem is this solving?
What exactly is the problem this legislation is trying to solve? I have seen all sorts of weird stuff on the internet in my years (plus had a few friends that *loved* to send me really wacky things) and yet, somehow, I ended up not being some sort of crazy deviant. But wait - One in a hundred thousand million will be! We must protect the children by censoring half of the internet for the entire nation's population!
Hacking is bad. Censoring the internet for the entire population of your country? Much, much, MUCH worse.
Easy. The problem of parents wanting a babysitter that's basically free and keeps them from actually having to parent their children. So they can plop them in front of a computer or tablet and be done with their child rearing duties.
And yes, I blame lazy parents - most of whom probably have children because "it's trendy" and social pressures to well, have kids they don't really have the will to take care of properly.
Oh, and apparently, the idea is infectious. Conservative MP Joy Smith (Manitoba) has said she wants Canada to adopt the same thing.

Re:Oh Canada...
Couldn't agree more. The quote they used in the attack on Justin Trudeau was actually taken from a CTV interview/documentary that aired, I think, more than 10 years ago. They basically cut out everything before and everything after the quote to make it look like that's what Justin Trudeau was saying, when in fact he was describing someone else's point of view. I honestly don't care either way who's in charge (Liberals, NDP, or Conservatives), but I expect them to be honest and upfront. This ad was extremely deceitful and underhanded, as all attack ads are. But more importantly what it says to me is the Cons are so fearful that JT will give the Liberals the upper hand in the next election. So much so that we're going to have to spend the next two years watching these ads so they can condition the public to hate him. The Cons think the ads worked for the last two Liberal leaders (Stéphane Dion and Michael Ignatieff), but the fact is, no one liked them anyway. They were just two more old white guys with the same beliefs as the last 100 old white guys to come through. I personally couldn't see them as being any better or worse than Harper.

Re:One of the execs
I don't know what the odds of this are in Canada, but in the U.S. the odds of corporate execs being held accountable are almost nil.
Hello from the future. They were acquitted of all charges.

The Young Republicans of Fordham
The College Republicans regret the controversy surrounding our planned lecture featuring Ann Coulter. The size and severity of opposition to this event have caught us by surprise, and caused us to question our decision to welcome her to Rose Hill. Looking at the concerns raised about Ms. Coulter, many of them reasonable, we have determined that some of her comments do not represent the ideals of the College Republicans and are inconsistent with both our organization's mission, and the University's. We regret that we failed to thoroughly research her before announcing, that is our error and we do not excuse ourselves for it. Consistent with our strong disagreement with certain comments by Ms. Coulter we have chosen to cancel the event and rescind Ms. Coulterâ(TM)s invitation to speak at Fordham. We made this choice freely, before Father McShaneâ(TM)s email was sent out and we became aware of his feelings --- had the President simply reached out to us before releasing his statement he would have learned that the event was being cancelled. We hope the University community will forgive the College Republicans for our error, and continue to allow us to serve as its main voice of the sensible, compassionate, and conservative political movement that we strive to be. We fell short of that standard this time, and we offer our sincere apologies.
Ted Conrad, President

Fun times:
The incident followed a Monday night lecture at the University of Western Ontario, where Coulter told a Muslim student to "take a camel" as an alternative to flying.
Coulter made the comment as she responded to a question from student Fatima Al-Dhaher, who asked about previous comments in which Coulter said Muslims shouldn't be allowed on airplanes and should take "flying carpets" instead. Al-Dhaher noted she did not own a flying carpet and asked what she should take as an alternative transportation. Coulter did not deny making the flying carpet comment and replied to the university student, "What mode of transportation? Take a camel," to jeers and cheers. It was a decidedly pro-Coulter audience. One man, who identified himself as a U.S. citizen, described U.S. President Barack Obama as a "Marxist."
She is well-known for her vehement views against Muslims. In a post-September 11 column, she wrote that the U.S. should invade Muslim countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.
Coulter, who often comments on Fox News, once said Canada is "lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent" after the Canadian government did not join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Re:this is intolerable
If Anonymous has material evidence that points to the guilt of a particular individual, they should turn that evidence over to the responsible law enforcement agency, not go public and taint both the investigation and public opinion.
From CTV's website:
“We generally don’t like to deal with police first hand but were compelled to put our skills to good use protecting kids,” it read. “Ironically we have some good people in Vancouver who brought this to our admin’s attention. It’s a very sad story that affects all of us.”
It sounds like they did send it to police ("were compelled to").
Also, while neither of us is judge or jury, there is this:
The man identified by Anonymous appeared Monday at Surrey provincial court house, where he faces charges of sexual assault and sexual interference with a minor in a case unrelated to Todd.
He told CTV News he knew the 15-year-old, but insisted he was her friend. He said he helped identify a man in New York who was harassing her, and claims he passed that information to the RCMP.

Sounds like a fairly good bet they've got the right guy, but we'll have to wait & see - hopefully it goes to trial.

Re:The best candidate city ...
And an average house price of $961,000, or about 12x the average income. No thanks.
-
Re:Other places
It's worth noting that the average price of a detached house in Vancouver is $961,000 while the average family income is $67k/yr. I would recommend against Vancouver if you expect to retire before 80. Toronto isn't much better but at least it has a real economy.

Moral Media didn't die
Moral media isn't dead. You just have to look harder for it.
Now that the Sept 11th jingoism has died down and it's starting to be a non-terminal offence to express discontent versus the powers that be, you're starting to see the creepings of independent thought show up even in CNN. Up here in Canada, CTV's been doing it for a while. But even then there's a huge under-reporting of stories that would knock the comfort zone of the average person.
The basic problem is this -- any media outlet is a slave to the mandate of its publisher. This isn't really new, it's as old as newspapers themselves (it used to be that if you wanted to be a politician it was a shrewd move to found your own newspaper). So, if you've got nothing but biased media out there, the only way to really inform yourself is to (a) check up on all the biases and try to develop your own conclusions from them, and (b) realize that there's no substitute for actually being at the scene of the event, or at the very least talking to someone who is.
People who critique the media as having a bias often make the mistake of trying to sound like it's forced upon them, when really, you can choose to go out and find different information from a different source. Some options include:
ZNet
The Guardian
The Independent
Le Monde Diplomatique (English version here)
Tom Tommorow
It also helps in times of conflict to go to the media outlets or websites of your political enemies to see what they're saying. It's amazing how they often take as gospel a premise that is completely different from your own. It's also amazing how often the exact same coercive techniques are used by both sides. Makes you wonder if there are average citizens over there are pissed off at their media as much as some of us are at ours.
By the way, I know I went off on a bit of a tangent, but if you click on any of the links above you'll see minimal coverage of the Elizabeth Smart case. There might be a story in there at some point to tell everyone how it all turns out, but nothing like the usual CNN sensationalism. The point is, if you don't like your media, don't go back to it -- go elsewhere. It's not like we have battered wife syndrome or something.
(or maybe we do???)
