Re: cloak of evasion
They aren't talking about any D&D rules that I'm aware of...and I play 3.5e on a weekly basis.
Seriously? I play 3.5 and these are all rules as can be found in the SRD. You may want to look into some of them as they could be a great boon to your chatacter.

Re:WOTC+D&D
YAY! Nothing like a Well formed opinion on Slashdot! I don't suppose you'd mind telling us what it is, in particular, that sucks about 3E? Based on your complaint about marketing sucking more money out of people, I'll presume its cost. To that I'd like to counter that the basics of the game are available for free as part of the SRD. You want to try 3.5E? Try a website like www.d20srd.org. Everything you need to play the game is right there. The rest of the material is only useful if you want to add to the game (more spells, more prestige classes, new items, etc etc etc). Most of that stuff you can make up on your own if you don't want to buy it. In the meantime, many of us are quite enjoying the new streamlined rules, the abundance of customizable options for our characters (in the form of Feats and Skills to name but two), and the option of having rules for an AC range with more than a 20 point delta.

Re:Actually invisibility gives 50% miss chance
I'm sure it was an honest mistake, and that CmdrTaco was refering to the Minor Cloak of Displacement.

Re:OGL?
What about the Open Game license? I was under the impression that while all the interesting flare and history (things good for a DM or setting up a campaign) were all owned content, the
/rules/ themselves (That is, the things a searchable DB would be good for) were, as the name implies, "Open".
That is, while I can't give away detailed descriptions of the cities in Ebberon, it's perfectly okay for me to use one of any number of free, searchable online databases.
please correct me. I assume I'm missing something here. -

Re:Modern D&D makes me feel old
I've also played every iteration of D&D since the early 80's and I have to say the d20 system is by far the best evolution of the game to date. To me, a good system is one where the game mechanics are consistent and streamlined enough that I only have to look something up in the book if its complicated or used infrequently (like grapple rules, arg!). This keeps pacing of the game steady and allows us to concentrate on having fun and playing rather than wrestling with the rules and tables. This was particularly poignant when we tried playing Hackmaster for a couple sessions a few weeks ago. Pretty much every swing of a weapon resulted in the GM having to look up stuff in a table to tell us the outcome.
WoTC also gives away a shitload of their d20 content for free (as in speech) under their Open Gaming License allowing a large number of other companies to create products for the system.
Overall I think that Wizards has done an excellent job of taking a product that was languishing under TSR's mismanagement and turning it into something that has help grow the RPG industry in a way that hasn't been seen since the 80's. -
Re:No, no, no, and maybe
(Taiia's divine level 20, while Moradin and Corellon go up to 19 - and yes, they actually assigned levels to deities; perhaps they should had just made it into a prestige class ?-).
It's divine rank, and it's that way because most deities already have 30-50 regular levels. Besides, it would probably confuse people, since some things ("hero-deities", think Hercules) have a divine rank of 0 (which is not the same thing as having no divine rank), and how do you take 0 levels in a class?
You can read up on divine rank here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineRanksAndPow ers.htm#divineRanks -
Re:Oh no...
Anti-Paladin:
http://www.acaeum.com/DDIndexes/Periodicals/DrgSca ns/Dragon39.html
The thing was the magazines always released classes you'd want to play, but were NPC classes- they quickly broke down game balance if you used them in a campaign (e.g. Archer Ranger was a riot to play, but became little godlings too quickly). It wasn't an official class mind you.
As for the 3.0 not being the anti-paladin...his skills are all pretty much the reverse or a paladins, and they have the opposite ethos. Smiting good, commanding undead, aura of despair in lieu of a paladin's smite evil, turn undead, aura of courage...
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/blackgua rd.htm
Regarding paladins of alternate alignments, that is also an old idea. There was a dragon article long ago about a 'paladin for every alignment'. We never used it tho so I can't speak for it's game balance. -

Owning a dog
"But owning a dog is no walk in the park..."
If it's only one dog, yeah, it is a walk in the park, they only have a CR of 1/3. Certainly not very difficult to pwn. -
Re:It's Not Worth It
I may not make one of these to put in my living room, but I may make one to mount on my ceiling so I can use it during RPG games. I hope my ceiling is strong enough.

Re:Worst. Moneygrab. Ever.
I haven't read DMG2, but with 3.5 - moneygrabbing scheme or not - they actually listened to players and made a bunch of revisions and clarifications that make the game more fun than 3.0. I have no problem with that.
Also, consider that you can get all the basic d20 system information for free online, I think it's hard to accuse them of abusing their customers... That includes the player's handbook, the monster manual, and the DMG.

Re:So are any of the data sets Useful yet?
I use http://www.d20srd.org/ during play as a quick hypertext reference. He has spells alphabetically, by class/level, and by cleric domain.
It's also handy for looking up monsters, feats, conditions, etc. I use the encounter calculator to add up xp at the end of every session. -
Why bother, without this!

Re:it's a new age
An anonymous reader sends in this piece about chimeras - not the ones with a THAC0 of 11 [...]
The implications of a "humanzee" is enough to keep philosophers and religious thinkers busy for quite a while.
And as we look forward to a real world actually populated with creatures of our own devising, we look back to primitive role-playing technologies such as THAC0. Please people, check out the 3.5 edition D&D system. It doesn't suck. Gone are oddities like negative AC and convoluted "multiclass" and "splitclass" shenanigans. These pre-3rd Ed. D&D references make me sad.
