Scientology and Your Rights Offline
The Wayback Machine thing sucks, as do so many other Scientology actions against the net, but frankly I'm a little more concerned about how Scientology's actions affect people's rights out in the non-virtual world.
This is an organization that has framed critics, including journalist Paulette Cooper, who was indicted for sending bomb threats which, in reality, Scientology had sent to themselves. Scientology also attempted to frame Clearwater mayor Gabriel Cazares (for hit-and-run), U.S. District Judge Ben Krentzman (for solicitation and drug use), attorney Michael Flynn (for cashing a forged check), BBS operator Tom Klemesrud (for battery), attorney Graham Berry (for child molestation and battery), author Russell Miller (for murder), and former Scientologists Martin Hunt (for Internet posts; his report of the police officer's visit didn't mention what was being alleged about the posts) and Gene Allard (for grand theft - Allard won a 1974 malicious prosecution suit against Scientology).
Numerous instances of making false reports to police have been reported.
This is an organization that has seen 11 top-ranking executives go to jail in the U.S. for infiltrating government offices to steal and plant documents. In the similar Canadian trial, three Scientology executives and the Toronto church organization itself were found guilty of similar crimes.
The FBI raids in the late 70s turned up evidence of the frame-ups of Cooper and Cazares, along with evidence that Scientology had infiltrated numerous other government offices, such as the California Attorney General's office, as well as newspapers like the Clearwater Sun, law offices like Sidley & Austin, and other organizations, such as the Clark County Mental Health Agency. A Scientologist on the San Diego police force was fired for passing police information to Scientology.
A typical response from Scientology spokepeople is "that was years ago." (We never did that, and besides, we don't do it anymore.)
Well, there were five frame-up attempts that I can count in the past 3-4 years (Keith Henson, successfully framed and now a fugitive in Canada; Mark Bunker, acquitted; Bob Minton, acquitted twice but now apparently extorted into testifying for Scientology; Jesse Prince, hung jury).
There are also disturbing signs that Scientology is continuing to infiltrate government offices and businesses. A motion was filed just a couple of weeks ago alleging religious discrimination in the case of a woman who was fired from the Greenwich Housing Authority after Scientology management systems were introduced and employees were required to attend Scientology courses, paid for with thousands of dollars in public money, and the EEOC recently took action in a Texas case in which employees at a dental office were fired after refusing to attend Scientology classes. The Sacramento News & Review did a story not long ago about a publishing house that uses Scientology management techniques, run by Scientologists Dennis McKenna (who, as a Scientology spokesman, defended what Scientology did to Paulette Cooper) and Don Pearson (who gave extensive Scientology training to Allstate employees until management finally stopped it); the company, eRepublic, publishes a magazine on the use of technology in government (and another on the use of technology in education) and consults to governments on technology issues. The magazine includes ads for business training - never mentioning that it teaches Scientology principles - offered by people like Arte Maren - long-time Scientologist, co-conspirator in the 70s government infiltration case, and trainer in the Greenwich Housing Authority case.
I'm concerned that people confronted by Scientology training in the workplace don't know their rights. I hope the EEOC will vigorously defend people who are being illegally subjected to Scientology training at work - and I hope journalists will keep a closer eye on Scientology's continuing infiltration in government and business.

SciFi Channel is dying
It is official; Netcraft confirms: *SciFi Channel is dying
One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered dork community when Nielsen ratings confirmed that SciFi Channel market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all viewers. Coming on the heels of a recent Nielsen survey which plainly states that SciFi Channel has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. SciFi Channel is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Slashdot poll.
You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict SciFi Channel's future. The hand writing is on the wall: SciFi Channel faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for SciFi Channel because SciFi Channel is dying. Things are looking very bad for SciFi Channel. As many of us are already aware, SciFi Channel continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.
Farscape is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core audience. The sudden and unpleasant departures of hardcore fans only serves to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: Farscape is cancelled.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
People who watch SciFi Channel: 3
People who watch Cartoon Network or Spice Channel: 3,000,000,000
All major surveys show that SciFi Channel has steadily declined in market share. SciFi Channel is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If SciFi Channel is to survive at all it will be among internet video pirates. SciFi Channel continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, SciFi Channel is dead. -
Goat!
One day while I was surfin' round the internet
I came upon I sight I know I won't forget
A naked man with anus stretched there was no doubt
That he had nearly turned his colon inside out!
And I said GO!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Goatse be good!
I know that when he started with his streching ways
That other people must have showed him much dismay
But he paid them no mind and kept on streching his ass
And now he is a hero to the public mass!
So I say GO!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Goatse be good!
So take a lesson all of you both near and far
Be like the man whose rectum shines forth like a star
If he can stretch his ass like that you can't deny
There's no limit to what you can do if you just try!
And I say GO!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Goatse be good!
So when the clouds of gloom are gath'rin round your head
And you think you might be better off if you were dead
Oh when the bombs of stress are burstin' in your brain
And you feel just like a ship tossed in a hurricaine,
Just think about the man whose anus gapes so wide,
And you'll find a source of power hidden deep inside!
And you'll say GO!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go!
Go goatse go, go, go!

Re:cruise missiles != ICBM
Those cruise missiles often have another name - kamikaze.
You're not talking about a Tom-Cruise missile, are you??? -
And So It Begins...
Consider: A US Federal Court -- not some backwater municipal or state court -- has just ordered a wholesale invasion of citizens' privacy and personal information without a search warrant.
Consider further: This action was ordered, not in the name of "National Security" or "Anti-Terrorist Investigation", not on behalf of the government at all, but on behalf of a monsterously wealthy corporation bleating about "theft" and illusory "lost profits".
It has begun. The last bulwark against tyranny has been swept aside by a sitting Federal Magistrate without the slightest qualm.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I offer the following admittedly foolish, idealisic counsel:
Close your wallets.
Buy nothing.
See no movies. Rent no videos. Buy no music CDs. Purchase no computer software that isn't Open Source/Free Software (remember, the BSA members are in on this, too).
"But what do I do for entertainment?" Easy. Fire up your Web browser and/or go to your local government building and start digging for incriminating dirt on every elected official you can find. Once you find it, publish it. Read the dirt other people have dug up. Learn as much as you can. Discovering incriminating secrets about other people is endlessly entertaining, especially with that whole "betrayal of the public trust" angle going for it.
And once you've learned everything you possibly can about the people ostensibly representing you... VOTE!
Too many Attorneys General simply refuse to bring malfeasance charges, so relying on criminal prosecution to delete these people won't be very effective. Get out there this upcoming November and vote the bastards out. They are your employees. They are betraying you and selling you out. They are embezzling your earnings and selling your personal secrets to the highest bidder. Fire them. Hurl them out the door so fast that you can see a redshift on their ass.
Apathy about our government is a luxury we can no longer afford. We will only have one or two more shots at this before the courts decide that EULAs really are binding, that your property isn't really yours, that the monopoly of copyright trumps Freedom of Speech (q.v. Keith Henson) and Freedom from Unreasonable Search and Seizure (this case). At that point, we all become serfs, and, "Your papers, please," will become a phrase heard all too often in our places of work and our homes.

Re:To bad Carmack improved the wrong things.
(Why'd you post anonymously? This is good info! Someone mod the parent up!)
I have no knowledge of the modding system, an account or otherwise. I *do* have to find some time to play quake 30+ hours / week. :) Besides this is all horribly offtopic by now.
[...] Scourge Done Slick; how about that rocket jump rebound off the floating exploding thing?).
Vore jumps are damn amazing. I must say... I'm glad I'm a DMer and not a speed runner. I just do not have the timing, intrinsic sense of velocity augmentation and monster manip that these mofos have. I do wish speed running was a bigger movement. It certainly is damn fun to watch. My best attempt at a speed run was 25seconds on e1m3, best is 17. Eh... maybe I shouldn't be so anxious to have the movement bugs back in? ha ha. Naah, I really love to get bitch slapped by hardcore players. Its the only real incentive I have to get better. God knows its lonely work in the Quake Gym doing rep after rep of bunnies and curve jumps with nothing to comfort you except the lovely sound of torch crackle and hallway wind.
I'll have to disagree here.[DM6...]
No problem. I certainly respect the views of someone who has played Quake for years.
On DM6 in Quake{World}, a guy can camp the red armor and hang out for days. [...] and it only takes one solid hit to down a guy.
DM6 is on the short list of my fav maps. Hell yeah, I agree with you. I want to be the mofo with my boots on the red armor (already having 200, waiting for a knick so I can rehog it and control further resequenceing) and at least 30 rockets. Then you *are* one tough mofo to bring down, even with mad skills. First thing to do is to NOT LET THIS HAPPEN. Of course someone is going to get the close respawn and grab it. You have to rush it, early, and deplete their rockets, inflict some damage and get out, pick up some items before 30seconds hits and rerush and acquire it. Keeping the pressure on hard enough with surprise attacks (rocket to bunnies speed rushing works nice from the GL) and several sequential deaths can effectively flush the enemy when his health packs are depleted and his armor isn't up yet. Or you kill him. Yeah its hard. Doing the most damage you can per death, picking up more rockets than him in the "losers cornor" (green armor/superhealth end) and hogging the zapper and ammo will eventually do the deed if your skills are close. The lack of zapper ammo is a problem when you're on the sweet spot, speed in close and zap zap zap. Frags do tend to roll for a long time once the sweet spot is acquired, the key is getting real good at hogging it, and/or minimizing the amount of deaths it takes to reacquire. Hell sometimes If get a big lead, I'll grab the red and then run like a bitch for the rest of the match. That throws them off sometimes, and you can play DM6 real defensive with the fear of telefraggage and grenade teleport mining.
[...] and there's only one place to get them other than from your corpse).
I always like free delivery: be it rockets or pizza. :) Playing against someone who has a lot of twitch skillz is especially especially hard on DM6. Velocity augmentation really helps on this map. Its alarming when someone builds up 500speed and comes flying in with an arcing zapper.
BTW, thanks for the pointer to the FDE (Frags Done Extreme) video. That was amazing.
I really liked it, too. Make sure you get FDE II .avi if you've got the bandwidth. You'll notice that quite a few of those demos *seem like* they used like half of zuggart vertigo gravity. I haven't got an official response from the FDE crew but it seems that way. That lakerman_SC shot on DM6 was godlike. There is no way the SNG can propel you in the air in an arc like that without it.
Sound advice, thank you. But doesn't the precise timing of the tricks change based on network latency?
Well... Yeah. You definately can't be a HPB and pull extreme trickery. If you have a ping of 30 or less it isn't really that bad. Definately takes practice compared to a LAN though.
[Are] tricks different between Quake and QuakeWorld
No real difference actually. The same holes in Q worked in QW as of 2.30, but check my memory...
If I've managed to peak your interest in movement trickery I do have some utilities, demos and webpages to read which can actually help. I know because I learned how to do tricks from here. I'm no speed runner but it definately is a tool in the toolbelt when I need it (you'll definately find lots of reasons, not the least of which it makes you much more unpredictable).
This is the bible of quake movement enhancement (not the origional webpage). I must have read this damn thing 20 times after failed attempts to recreate the early demos (some of the later demos I'm consigned to never reproduce). Study it here and dl all the linked demos and watch them till your eyes bleed. :) The first one I got working was the hop across the sides of the RA room on DM3. I was pulling my hair out until I relaxed enough, did what the tutorial said and finally snagged it.
The real problem with bunnyhopping is that its quite hard (esp in the beginning) to tell how damn fast you're going. Most of my early attempts to do so were working I just couldn't tell, and with no positive feedback loop... you get the picture. So... a speed-o-meter is in order! no joke. Read/download/and get it, here
Finally, where better to practice your bunnies than a linear 100yard dash map so you can time your finishes. As an added bonus this was a Speed Running contest so you can check the multitude of entries to see different styles of old skewl hoppers and compare your skills. Its interesting that even among speed running pros on a super simple map there was a clear winner and placed positions. Download the map, here. Download the race demos here Best I ever got was 12.5 secs. Basically if you really want to learn (no, it isn't easy but if you really practice, the game will feel completely different afterwards- trust me) the tricks of the trade they're all there.
I don't have any words of wisdom on Quizmo nor alternate QW clients. I typically play on a LAN with stock QW clients and servers. Sometimes online, but i'm really prissy about lag (surprise!). Anyways, GL. I wish more people had the motivation and drive to be hardcore dedicated gamers. -
Re:Monitoring is bad but filtering would be worse
Monitoring opens the door for filtering, which by definition operates with the sole purpose of preventing access to certain information.
...
Granted, monitoring is not filtering, but again, it's a slippery slope.
Darned damn well it is! If a judge working on a controversial case want to get informed and fetch information about the controversial stuff he's working on knows that legislators will see that he's getting data on the unpopular thing du jour, it will have a definite chilling effect on efforts made by the judiciary to get informed.
And boy do we know how bad can an uninformed court can be!
Lastly, monitoring judges is a totally intolerable and unacceptable interference with the judiciary by both the legislative and executive branches.
Perhaps the judges should protest by installing bots that continuously troll for pr0n, in order to overwhelm monitoring efforts. -

Earthlink and Scientology CriminalsWhat do you expect from an ISP run by members of the criminally convicted cult of Scientology?
Just yesterday, the FBI raided Scientologist co-founder of Earthlink Reed E. Slatkin over his role in the biggest Ponzi scam of all time, detailed at the http://slatkinfraud.com site.
Not to mention their vicious actions against free speech on the Internet.
That's not to mention the somewhat questionable affidavit of former Scientology agent Robert J. Cipriano. Now according to Earthlink they stood up for privacy against the FBI. By the rule of thumb that anything a Scientologist says is the complete opposite of the truth, they just did that becuase they prefer to do all the spying themselves.
From the Cipriano affidavit:
37. On or about March 26th 1998, Mr. Moxon and I talked about my re-entering the work force. Mr. Moxon suggested Earthlink Network, Inc., in Pasadena. Earthlink Network is a Church Of Scientology company. Mr. Moxon contacted Mr. Sky Dayton, Chairman of Earthlink, who referred him to Mr. George Williams, Director of Dial-Up Sales. An interview was arranged, and I was hired March 27th 1998, even though they were not hiring at that time. Earthlink created a new sales management position for a girl named Jennifer so they could move her up creating an opening for me in the sales department. On March 28th 1998, I sent an email to Mr. Moxon thanking him for the introduction (See Exhibit 11 & 12).While at Earthlink Network in Pasadena, California, I had access to the Internet Service Provider's internal operations.
38. I was befriended the first day of my employment at Earthlink by a Mr. Michael Hamra, another sales associate. I quickly started a friendship with Mr. Hamra and spent countless hours talking about various things including how Earthlink started with investments, by Kirstie Alley, Tom Cruise, John Travolta and other wealthy Scientologists, into Sky Dayton's idea of an internet service provider. Mr. Hamra told me how Sky Dayton had a coffee shop before starting Earthlink and that he, because of being a Scientologist and his friendships with celebrity Scientologists, he was able to build a multi-million dollar company that could, "Watch over the entire internet from within the internet."
39. Additionally, Mr. Hamra told me he was one of the founding group of Scientologist who ran Earthlink out of a Glendale one room office where he made sales calls from a bathroom in the office. Mr. Hamra said, "The Church of Scientology now had a database of information on every subscriber which included names, credit card info., credit reports, telephone info., computer info., who had referred them to Earthlink and who were their previous ISP providers." Mr. Hamra told me about the "other Earthlink building" which was next door on New York Avenue in Pasadena. Mr. Hamra told me that the other building was high security and is where Earthlink and the Church of Scientology did all the monitoring of the internet. Mr. Hamra was always very interested in my testimony in Berry v. Cipriano. It became clear to me that he was reporting what I was saying to other in Scientology.
40. I received many incoming sales calls while at Earthlink from individuals who would ask, "Are you a bunch of Scientologists?" We were trained to never admit that we were involved with the Church Of Scientology.

"Mamann & Associates provides a full range of services for temporary and permanent immigration to Canada and the United states. Guidy Mamann is a former immigration officer and is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Immigration Law. Mamann & Associates is conveniently located in the same building as the Immigration and Refugee Board at 74 Victoria Street in Toronto."
Keith Henson is seeking Refugee Status after having been made a Political Prisoner of Conscience. His "crime" was to peacefully picket and criticize the internationally infamous Cult of Scientology. Unfortunately for Mr. Henson and the reputation of the United States, these protests occurred near Hemet California. Scientology has an extraordinary level of political influence upon the local government. This extralegal influence was clearly demonstrated by the open collusion between the Scientology Corporate lawyers and the District Attorneys Office of Riverside California.
Mr. Henson chose to seek refuge in Canada as that nation has previously criminally convicted corporate Scientology for Breaches of the Public Trust. Mr. Henson also has extensive personal contacts amongst consumer and religious activists opposed to Scientology abuses in Canada.

Re:Slashdot, Andover DON'T Cave AGAIN!!!
The hell they caved. They just obeyed the law. The DMCA basically forced their action and I suggest you read it to understand why they did what they did. Incidentally their action, and their full report in the thread caused more bad publicity for the cult of Scientology than leaving the article up would have, and was completely legally protected, so if Scientology sued, they'd lose and get slapped with costs and fees. Slashdot used effective tactics and won.
As for Tripod, what can I say. They're fucking morons. Apparently they either got a bandwidth spike and croaked the site, or a bogus complaint and yanked it without notice. That's fine. Now the site is sitting on top of two T3s at http://www.operatingthetan.com thanks to the nice people at http://www.dis.org. Thanks Don NOTS. http://freehenson.da.ru is the *permanent* URL for the site wherever it goes. That is what I have always used when referring it to people, so that if they linked, the links would not be broken when some dip-idiot temporary free host yanked it. However, people insisted on pointing to Tripod instead. http://freehenson.da.ru will *always* work even if the site gets croaked at one or another location.
Apologies for rant and thanks to the mirrors and dis.org

Original Keith Henson site back up at http://freehenson.da.ru or http://www.operatingthetan.com thanks to the nice people at http://www.dis.org
So far as I can tell, he is not a political prisoner by any stretch of the imagination.
That's true. To be a political prisoner, he'd have to be a prisoner first. For the moment, at least, he has avoided that.
He was accused of a crime, and after a full trial, a jury unanimously found him guilty. If his problem is with the form of the trial, he has remedies in the United States, far more powerful than would any convict in any other nation in the World. He instead decided to abuse the freedoms he had and left the nation.
Time will tell. Frankly I'm somewhat pessimistic. However, the problem is not just with the "form" of the trial, although that itself was highly questionable. The problem is that there is no way he could effectively have appealed it. He was not only denied effective and experienced counsel versus Scientology, but the best person to serve as his witness, Gerry Armstrong had himself been gagged and driven out of the country by similar means years ago. Not to mention that his preferred counsel, Graham Berry, was also driven out of practice and nearly out of his mind by years of harassment as detailed in this motion to withdraw.
Further, he would have had to appeal from jail, in all likelihood. He has essentially been bankrupted, and while he still has a house, it's too encumbered to borrow from, and there's no way to get a line of credit. He'd have needed $25,000 bottom line just to get it into court and file need appeal briefs, and that is if Scientology didn't somehow snatch the money in bankruptcy proceedings related to other litigation, which they've done before.
In the bankruptcy case, for example, they've spent over a million bucks in a case where they stand to collect at most $75,000. Even his ex-counsel Berry had his car seized in similar bankruptcy proceedings, despite the car being a rustbucket not worth a thousand dollars at most.
While you are correct about the legalities here, and in fact Keith has basically given them short shrift, you also highly underestimate the effects a compromised legal system can give to those who are willing to spend literally any quantity of money in order to achieve their goals.
While it's nice to pretend that there's justice in the United States, it's basically a money-operated machine. If you have fifty million to throw at it every year, you get whatever you want, and can grind anyone to dirt with it, deny them effective counsel, deny them witnesses, deny them a trial, and in this case, even keep them in a jail filled with your own people.
Frankly I don't think Henson would have even gotten out of jail alive had he been there, much less to a successful appeal.
Incidentally the charges against him were not federal. They were California criminal statute--422.6.

Re:Hard sources? Court docs? Hello?
All I see is Henson's site (which we can't see anymore) and a couple references to california law.
It's back up thanks to the folks at dis.org. See here: http://www.operatingthetan.com
The original redirector also now points to the operational site, updated as of this morning, http://freehenson.da.ruThis site references all currently available court docs, but note that many (including the full transcript of the trial) and sentencing report (one exhibit alone is 252 pages), are not yet OCR'ed and scanned. This happened just yesterday, and these take time.
However, all the important motions and rulings are there. If you go through the site, whenever I reference a motion, the link is to the motion itself or to a draft version if the original was not available.
The site will continue to be updated as events unfold, including Henson's latest actions, which apparently will be in Canada, to almost everyone's surprise.

Re:If you say so.NOTE: Henson site is back up at http://freehenson.da.ru which is a redirect to its new home at http://www.operatingthetan.com thanks to Don NOTS and dis.org
If you say so. By fleeing the country as a fugitive, being never able to return absent a grant of amnesty for both the underlying crime AND the crime of running, he simply becomes the poster child that the CoS can muscle you out of anywhere -- even the United States.
Yes, that's true. However, Keith isn't the first. There's also Gerry Armstrong. They've been doing this for years. It should be publicized. I think that fact, itself, that Scientology can even drive a critic out of the United States, is worthy of note.
I think your other points about the possible wisdom of this move are valid, and that this maneuver of Henson's has the potential to be spectacularly disastrous. However, in Henson's view he essentially had no other choice but spending the year in jail--any appeal would be hopelessly delayed, with him serving the full time regardless of the outcome.
I can honestly see his view of saying "Fuck that" and at least making sure that any penalty he suffers will be widely publicized.

http://freehenson.da.ruThe site should be mirrored at http://freehenson.da.ru the base url I have generally used as I imagined something would take the site down at some point.
The whole site should be mirrored there soon, and currently redirects to http://www.operatingthetan.com.
Thanks to jcr, Don NOTS and others. As of 1742 EST the current best mirror is at the google cache in the Topic, but within 20-30 minutes it should be the original URL, http://freehenson.da.ru.

Best laid || layed plans
Could it be the author wrote this book left it on the shelf and avoided the problems which are plaguing the industry at this current time?
This is a future in which the sovereign individual is freed to become as much as she allows.
Wrong, this is a future where many are going to have to tiptoe through all sorts of scenarios to avoid having a future littered with legal worries from all sides of the spectrum. How can you become "freed" from anything when at the rate the tech field is going, we've seen a surge of lawsuits from all walks of life ranging from patents, to copyrights, to any other fabled scenario a company wants to spend money litigating?
Looking at that aspect, I'd say many would become rather restricted and reluctant to promote "the next best thing", or even themselves out of fear of retribution.
Secondly amidst all that nonsense, for those who either don't notice, or ignore the warnings, taking a look at the legal system itself regarding tech, it will only get worse, as laws (which are often so broad and obsolete to a circumstances) prohibits many from acting. (e.g. Jerome Hackenkamp, Max Vision, Keith Henson, Napster [corporations aren't free from actions either], Jim Bell and the list goes on) to promote or revolutionize, or even speak in today's world.
What world is the author living in I'd like to visit?
However, Gilder does miss one important point; in the abundance of bandwidth, there becomes a new scarcity of content. In the end, Gilder's book
may best be thought of as a call to arms: start wasting bandwidth, and start working on solving the next problem -- one of novel creation.
How can you expect to solve the next problem when the ones in front of you are ignored? What about taking a realistic approach to focusing on whats on the table now before crying over spilled milk later?

Use Freenet
If we can build momentum for projects such as this one and this one, this problem could be alleviated. Right now, small web publishers are hurting because they do not have the resources to serve content to millions of browsers, each of whom is just a resource drain. But, turn each of those browsers into a little mini-server, and the more people read your site - the more copies of your pages exist, and hence, the fewer resources you need to provide to serve them.

Not OK to carry a pointed agenda on Usenet eitherThen there is one of the many cases of Keith Henson, who at this moment is charged and facing criminal trial for trash talk on Usenet. The fun loving Scientologists convinced a DA in Hemet CA to treat it as a terrorist threat. (Their side here, to meet the pretense of objectivity.)
The point is that The Man has no sense of humour, and that trash talking can bring a world of hurt, even if it's technically protected and innocuous. You may get off eventually, but it can be very annoying and expensive.

DVD is plenty consumer-friendly...
The players and movies are cheaper and of higher quality than LaserDisc, and they allow very straightforward access and many special features. I just don't see how DVD is not consumer-friendly. Now, the format's not hacker-friendly, granted... oh wait, yes it is. Now Divx, that was consumer-hostile. Now it's gone. DVD, so to speak, rules. I'm waiting for another box full to arrive this week (thanks, DVD Talk).

This can be done with DVD too..
For those that didn't know.. DVD Rip is a program for doing this with DVD.. You can get it at dvd.da.ru
