Re:Lots of folks making the switch
Get 2. It wont hurt a thing. I have 2 in my MBP. I had 2 in my old G4.
I give Windows 1 GB when I boot into Parallels.
Just don't buy from Apple. I personally like http://www.dealram.com/ I've used it for a few years.
If you're looking for some good deals, you can check out their sister site dealmac.com. Legally (I think) vendors can't sell Macs cheaper than Apple, however some have bundles going for the same price. Warranty and all that work still go through Apple. -
Re:Mac Mini +
I disagree- I see no reason to jump to the 1GB of RAM immediately. I say get the 512MB version and play with it for a while. If you determine that more RAM will improve your user experience, buy a 1GB stick (PC2700 DDR 333) (http://dealram.com/prices/systems/30641/1GB.html
) , for less than $100, rather than paying Apple $175. Plus you can sell the original 512MB RAM on eBay or keep it as a backup.

Great Deals
Dealmac.com http://www.dealmac.com/
dealram.com http://www.dealram.com/
and the rest of the "deal family." I have never gotten a "bad" retailer from one of their links. Over the year I have saved thousands of dollars from "Deal" sites. -
Re:Safari runs like crap
I'm here to help. Check here for better deals on RAM than Apple is likely to offer. Make sure that whatever you buy comes with a guarantee, or even stick with a name brand if you want to be safe. I've heard Kingston is usually a good bet.
The page at the dealram site for 256 MB for an iBook G4 has RAM for as low as $27 with free shipping from a reputable vendor (18004Memory.com). Brand name stuff is a little pricier: Kingston's 256 MB is $44.
Or maybe the problem is that she's trying to copy a 17 MB file in the background. (Note to retarded mods: that's a joke) -
Re:The price needs to be in the impluse buy range
Where can you get a 1 GB stick of PC2700 RAM with a lifetime warranty from a reputable vendor that's not gouging you on shipping? The lowest price I've seen is $158 on a stick that should work, but might not. Cheapest on a stick that is specifically advertised to work is $170.
Pretty much the same deal on the 512 stick, but the margins aren't as wide. Probably compatible: $67. Advertised as compatible: $69.
My source is DealRam. As they haven't added the Mini to their systems drop down list, I looked at prices for the eMac. -
Re:this goes against....
Cheapest price on deal-ram.com for a gig is $192.
A shop I deal with frequently in Toronto sells 1 gig modules for $234.99 Cdn, or about $190.55 USD.
That's not $125, but it's still way cheaper than Apple's upgrade.
BTW one interesting thing about the Mini is that while the average user does not need a full gig of RAM, it is still wise to get it in this machine since it only has one slot. Upgrading later will just leave you with spare memory laying around. -
Re:I called Apple and this is what they said....
Except that the Mini uses normal DDR SDRAM. Even if you ignore generics, you can get 1GB of Kingston or Crucial for about $200.
Apple's upgrade is a 62% markup, and that doesn't even count the loss of the original 256MB chip (which you could sell for a few bucks or use in another system). Still not worth the price. -
Re:this goes against....
check DealRam.com. They usually have pretty good prices for ram. It looks like $165 is the cheapest they have 1GB ram though.

Bettery life will go to hell, why not flash?
Nothing like moving parts to send battery life down the toilet, not to mention reliability. I'm not an expert, but with 2GB of flash ram (0.5GB more than the HD) being about $150 street you would think an $800 dollar phone would use it.

when it's required, you won't even notice the cost
memory is cheap. CF cards cost around $120/gig, and the 2-gig size is cheaper by the gig. How much bling would it add to the cost of your $70,000 escalade to throw a couple of gigs of compactflash in it, so that the NTSB could require the car to store information every tenth of a second about the last 10,000 seconds of operation? that's less than three hours' worth of continuous driving. Considering I get about 10 hours' drive out of one tank of gas, how many 1-gig CF cards would you need for 100,000 seconds? does anyone know how much space is taken up by one record in the black box db?
Think of a system where the state requires all gas stations to install the equivalent of a CF reader at the pumps. Before you can fill the tank, you have to let it scan your car's memory- no memory, no gas. Sorry! If you have been speeding, the gas station writes you a ticket, and you have to pay it with your credit card before you can fill up... -
Apple RAM overpriced
This is just one more reason not to buy RAM or harddrives from apple. They're overpriced. Check dealram.com, dealmac.com, & pricewatch.com instead.

Re:Howard Stern Is My CousinCapacity is catching up to and exceeding SD, and other features (price, reliability, etc.) reall stand out in favor of the MS, in my opinion.
Well, your opinion doesn't agree with the facts. According to this site, Memory Sticks only go up to 128MB. SD memory goes up to 512MB for $245. To it's credit, MS is priced exactly the same as SD memory ($55). Not favoring MS at all, really.
I don't have any experience or could find anyone else's about reliability, so I won't pretend to know anything about that. But saying that MS is better than SD and greatly improving every day is just complete BS. The only innovation Sony has made with basic MS in the last few years is 128MB cards, which isn't that impressive compared to SD's 512MB cards. -

Re:NiceThey take regular SO-DIMMS, but you have to be careful about the size of the whole SO-DIMM package. I recommend checking out dealram. Dealram is run by the Dealmac people, and lists the best prices on memory for each Apple model. They are solid consumer advocates, and they will yank sellers that rip people off.
Their best price on 512MB for the TiBook right now is $95 shipped from Data Memory Systems.
