These are some sites that were very useful to me when I was learning OpenGL:

- NeHe productions has over 20 OpenGL tutorials online, starting at the absolute beginning.
- The OpenGL Challenge is a weekly OpenGL compo that requires entries to be opensource. Has some *really* cool stuff.
- Romka Graphics has loads of misc OpenGL stuff, worth checking out.
- The OpenGL FAQ and troubleshooting guide is another overload in OpenGL-related material.

And besides that, I also run my own daily news site located at www.demoscene.org and is all about multimedia development, so a couple of OpenGL-related links turn up every week. Hope this helps...

Um, if you download boobietraped software, they can do whatever the fuck they want to you. And you can always see the IP address of people who download stuff from you in Gnutella.

I mean this isn't any diffrent then the web, take comet cursors for example. Once they get code running on your system (outside of a sandbox), any pretense of security is gone. (and if your running Linux, you they may not beable to see system files, but they can kill all your 'user' files, witch are probably more imporntant.)

Btw, this is somewhat offtopic, but I found a trogen/worm on Gnutella the other day as a VBS file. (I was looking for Evengelion stuff, honest!). I put the source (It's a Visual Basic Script) on my webserver if you want to check it out.

I recently saw ESR talk at Cornell University, and he actually mentioned this topic. He was talking about how he goes around advising software companies as to what extent they should include open source in their business model. One specific example he drew when the question was asked if he's ever told a company to keep everything closed was this :) He referred to a company who designed a software package for logging companies which would maximize their output by doing the currect cuts on each log (depending on the size, shape, and grain)

Now I may be wrong, but this tells me that your odds of finding such a package are extremely low, or at least that if you do find one, it won't be nearly up to par as its commercial equivalent.

I'm currently developing a rather complex website using Java Servlets. If you are putting HTML code in your servlets, you're doing it wrong :) I don't spit out any HTML code directly from the servlets, the servlets fill up templates, which are used to fill up other templates, and so on. The entire site is based on these templates (which allow the side effect of SKINNING! :) .. the role of the servlets are to provide logic in their generation and the fetching and maintenence of database connections.

Ok, I haven't really seen all that much, i've seen sailor moon (seasons 1 and 2 dubbed from CN (cartoon network) and fansubbed, and season 5 subbed.. .rm's available from .. http://senshitv.dhs.org i believe. That's off the top of my head. I think it also has Macross 7 .rm's.) Anyway, Dragon Ball Z from CN, Ronin Warriors from CN, Some of robotech (CN), Saber Marionette J(fansubbed), Bubble Gum Crisis 2040 (AnimEigo subbed), Nadesico (subbed somehow, forgot.), Oh! My Goddess, Gundam Wing (CN).. I think that's it. Will watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ranma 1/2, and Tenchi Muyo soon (Actually, I saw one of the movies on sci-fi before.. looked pretty good)

Of those, I really recommend Saber Marionette I don't know of the other series (anything beyond J), but I really liked that series.. Essentially there's a spaceship, it has problems, escape pod ejects, crashes onto a planet, and only 6 males survive. Through cloning, they build a world (with 6 countries, each of the original survivors create a country similar to a nation from our current world). They have emotionless robots in the form of females called Marionettes.. But some were developed with emotion chips (maiden circuits, whatever you want to call them), that let them act like real females would. Great series.

I also liked Oh! My Goddess, and Bubble Gum Crisis 2040.
Personally, I couldn't tolerate Robotech or Macross 7, from the handful of episodes I watched of both. (Originally I didn't realize they were related, it had been over a year since I had seen Robotech, took me a while to recognize why it seemed so familiar, and a bunch of alusions to it.)

Gundam Wing was quite good, and the dubs actually weren't bad. I haven't seen the subs, but I enjoyed that one.

The others, I was kinda neutral on. Something to watch but nothing really exciting. I just watched Nadesico, but can barely even remember what happened in it.. it's something to do, and some of the characters were interesting to watch, but.. *shrug*

These are just my opinions, but I'd recommend those.. I can't believe up until now, I haven't seen Saber Marionette mentioned once. You people should be ashamed :)

Okay, I've been drawn into the vortex that is anime (just ask a few people who know me) and I've seen a couple of ones, and no one favorite yet.

Which Anime to watch depends a lot on what type of genre you want to watch. Anime isn't just a cartoon with a specific drawing style, but it's animation that is aimed at multiple different types of people. Sci-Fi and Fantasy seem to be the biggest types out there, but there are some modern day soap-opera ones too.

Now, here are some suggestions based on genre

Fantasy (My favorite)
- Ranma 1/2 (Ranma Nibun No Ichi) - Comedy - actually based in modern times... I didn't realize that until one of the characters pulled out a (sub?)machine gun in one of the episodes, and they make a reference to X-Files in another episode.
- Slayers - Comedy - A superpowerful Sorceress who likes lots of food and lots of money, who ends up getting caught in supernatural plots. (Actually, I've only seen some of Slayers, but seen all of Slayers: Next (2nd season) and some of Slayers: Try (3rd season) and some of the movies)
- Fushigi Yuugi - Epic Adventure - Two young girls get magically transported to ancient China. And they have to find the seven seishi (Guardians - actuall translation of seishi is constellation)
- El Hazard - The Magnificent World Cool Anime where Makato and a few others from his high-school get drawn into El Hazard, and then they help (or hinder, depending on the character) El Hazard's survival.
Sci-Fi
- Neon Genisis Evangellion - Never seen it (well, one or two episodes), but it is generally considered the best Sci-Fi anime out there.
- Bubble Gum Crisis - Again, never seen it (can you tell what type *I* like? ^_^), but it's one of the better Sci-Fi Anime.
Soap-Opera-Like (Or I guess you could call this category 'Real Life')
- Marmalade Boy - Tried watching it... it got my attention as long as normal soap operas do... which isn't very long.
- Rurouni Kenshin - This isn't soap-opera, but real-life history. Takes place in the Meji era of Japan, and the main character is a former killer (best in all of Japan) who has forsworn killing. He now uses his Sabatu (Reverse sword - ie, the blade is on the wrong side of the sword) to help defend people. Awesome series.
Just plain Weird Stuff
- Sorcerer Hunters (& Spell Wars) - Fantasy - 5 Main characters, the two females turn into S&M Doms who 'pick' on the main character when he turns into his demon form (and sometimes when he's in his normal form.) Also of special note for this one is the names of the characters. Carrot, Marron Glace, Gateau Mocca, Chocolate, Tira Misu (That's the 5 main characters... other's have names of other foods, such as Bagel & Crossoint)

Okay, I'm sure I missed some, but that just took too long to type out... especially since I'm at work. ^_^;

Under the desk is my custom built linux box and Pioneer VSX-305 reciever. Oh yeah, i've also got a SGI Indigo( see pictures here and here) case that I haven't gotten around to using yet. On my bookshelf is, HTML 3.2 Unleashed, Perl in a nutshell, Fundamentals of database administration, C: A Reference Manual, and Client/Server Computing. And i'm rolling about the room on a very comfy Cartwright chair. So, i guess we are all individuals :)

It's not only the bandwidth that you're paying for that you need to take into account. It's the fact that the stuff you're getting OVER that bandwidth someone worked hard to create and probably won't be able to continue to do so if you don't load their advertisements. A TV station isn't going to lose money en masse if people change channels during their commericals, but websites will take a hit if this feature is implemented and provides an automatic way for you to not "put back" into the sites you read.

Even though they're annoying, they're usually the only lifeline for sites that aren't TOTALLY biased and corporate (Shugashack, stileproject, etc. etc.)

I'm talking about the midi to guitar tab software I was writing around six months ago. You plug a midi in, and it outputs the guitar tab for any given midi track. Even drum. :)

It's command line GPL'd software, written in C, compiles with GCC. Just like it should be. This is the first time I've released this piece of software, so have at it, my friends.

Last year, some friends and myself got together to perform Super Mario Brothers songs for the school talent show. We dressed up as the characters and did a medley, which included Hammer Brothers, Underground, The Castle Song From Mario 1, the water tune from smb3 and a few others. It was pretty obvious that a program like the one I've written would have been a great help. :)

the MacQuarium.

Gutted Mac Classic, Classic II or SE. The monitor is removed and cut glass installed to make a fish bowl.

Advantages over current hardware: crash resitant, near perfect implementation of artifical intelligence (how smart are fish anyway? They'll eat themselves to death). Much more enjoyable than psuedo fishtank screensavers.

Disad: Crash leads to death, requires 24/7 uptime and system monitoring. Operating elements will sometimes eat each other.

Seriously, I gutted an old SGI Indigo with the intent to fit it with PC parts, but I never got around to it, but if several hours of work will get me some fame on slashdot, wow I should actually get around to going that, right now its doing nothing but making a nice spot for my cat. For all those SGI lovers out there (are there any?) the machine was dead when I got it, I wouldn't gut a perfectly good SGI to put a PC in it.

OK, let's get these things running on a wireless network. Once that's accomplished, a ride on the subway train could mean some heavy-duty computational power as everyone's pocket computers would be automatically chained to the cluster. Boom! Critical mass is achieved and the damn thing develops a self awareness. It rearranges everyone's meetings and even sends out e-mail messages recommending changes and making decisions. After just a few days, the commute AI monster is reorganizing companies by combining different groups of people to work more efficiently on completely different projects than they originally were working on. Oh, whoops. This has already happened. I'm the AI and I'm sending this message out from a WAP cellphone.

Too bad they don't have more characters in the screens. They make or break a good 3d experience (unless what you're doing doesn't require them) .. the ones in there are pretty damn ugly and unrealistic looking.

I'm working on a project that will be a big quake mod (if it works, we'll eventually license it) .. this one seems pretty good but ya can't tell without character models / faces and complex models. More screenshots!

I don't mean this to be a flame, but it is going to come out as one.

A long time ago (when 4.5 came out) I griped right here on Slashdot because of the way it was handling the resizing of images in tables. When you told an image to be 100% of a cell wide, it worked fine. But when you told it to be 100% of a cell tall, it would not. So, I bitched.

Some lady from Netscape saw my post on here and sent me an email about "Well, we are not going to fix bugs in 4.x, but you are welcome to help us fix things in Mozilla by submitting bug reports!" Well, I did.

So, now I download 6.0 and what do I find? The same fricking bug is there.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
