Re:I'd be Pretty Pissed Off
If there was a functional difference, I'd be glad to concede that HP was being completely, undeniably, 100% evil. However, all the searching I've done seems to indicate that the only difference between rv250 and rv280 is AGP8X support. Probably, ATI's product portfolio is assuming that the 9200 is faster when running under 8X (which it presumably is). That's irrelevent to the current issue.

Motherboards too
A couple of weeks ago Digitimes was reporting (registration required) that by the end of the year over 50% of motherboards will be produced in China.

News from Taiwan
I just read an article by Wen-Yu Lang at Digitimes*, about the new producer of the 15.4-inch PowerBooks in Taiwan. Which seems to give the answer: "Compal will start shipping 15.4-inch wide-screen PowerBooks for Apple in the second half of this year, with initial monthly shipments estimated at 30,000-40,000 units."
As we know Compal is allready producing the 12 and 17 inch model. Steve will surely introduce a new 15.4 inch PowerBook at WWDC (which is the best developer tool anyway). It's going to be all aluminium and 802.11g, but will there be a PPC 970?
*DigiTimes is Taiwanâ(TM)s only daily newspaper focusing on the IT industry -
Re:There is NO conspiracy theory, AMD isn't just xIBM is pushing their fab services quite a bit, so losing the Apple order would make a dent. See the Manufacturing section on Digitimes.
Additionally, I'm sure that IBM will use the 970 somewhere in it's own product line instead of just for Macs.

Re:The "Recording" Industry is Fine
It's not the RECORDING industry that's ailing -- it's the MEDIA DISTRIBUTION industry.
Actually you mean the "content distribution" industry.
The media industry is the one that creates the transfer media to place audio files on. Blank CD-Rs and such (which are more profitable for discmakers than pre-recorded CDs). Their business is growing. -
HP is
Who will make the laptops with these processors? Certainly not Dell, HP, IBM or the likes of any Tier 1 supplier
Actually HP will be offering these chips soon and already sells AMD based laptops and desktops. I don't forsee Dell or IBM offering AMD based laptops anytime soon.

Re:Nothing too exciting here...
NV31 and NV34 will arrive in March/April. These will be a cheaper versions of GeforceFX (NV30), NV31 will be aimed to mid-range destop and high-end mobile market while NV34 will be aimed to low-end destop and mid-end mobile market.
I doubt that S3 could compete with this chips in both price and performance. -
No big deal
The article has a related blurb (registration required) at the bottom that says that a 19" iMac will be available in 3Q.
If the 17" iMac caused the death of the 15", it would follow that the 19" would kill the 17".

Re:Dell to only OEM deviceLooks like they went with Wistron to manufacture the devices. Another article I had read back in June mentioned that 3 of the 4 ODM's that Dell was courting for their PDA line pulled out of the running because they didn't think there'd be much of a profit in manufacturing a device with Ipaq specifications but selling for $299. It doesn't sound like Dell is aiming for the mid-level Audiovox Maestro-type devices, they're aiming squarely at market leader HP and their high-end Ipaq devices. That $299 price is also mentioned in the article I linked to above and has been the price that has been tossed around with just about all recent Dell PDA rumors.
If you're a fan of the PocketPC devices, Dell's entry is nothing but a good thing as they'll drive down prices across the board. If you're a Palm fan however, this is yet another blow since at this price-point, a mid-tier Palm OS device will have trouble competing with a flashy, full-featured Pocket PC device in the mainstream markets.

Xbox 2 Out in September ?There are rumours at the Inquirer here with sources from Digitimes here that the price will be pushed down on the components and something new will be released in September.
Perhaps with the use of such commodity parts it might be possible to have a new Xbox out each year.
The would have strange consequences for a console, would consoles have to say for Xbox 2004 only ? PS 1 or 2 is one thing, but one every year would be another.

Thankfully...
With news reports which claim that Sony's PS2 threatens the Department of Defense, I'm glad there's no way someone could say h4x0rs were to blame for a buffer overflow which caused Dick Cheney to have a heart attack or something
