I used a DOS machine from '85-'91 and thought it was pretty hot shit. When I started college in the fall of '91, the school required incoming students to have access to a Mac.

Since my existing computer was then almost six years old and showing its age, my parents opted to loosen the purse strings and buy me a Macintosh LC. Within fifteen minutes of getting it out of the box and up and running, I knew I was gonna be a Mac user for life (sorry, Apple-haters, but there was no consumption of Kool-Aid involved). Not long after that I got my first look at Windows 3.1, and I couldn't believe what a half-assed Mac knockoff it was. Microsoft has made great strides with Windows over the years, but they still can't touch the synergy between hardware and software that Apple achieves. That synergy means much more to me than raw speed, and I'm more than happy to pay for it.

Therein is the basis for the holy wars, IMHO: The Mac people don't understand why the Windows users are eating dogfood when they could be having filet mignon, and the Windows people don't understand why anyone would choose to pay more for a computer that they perceive as working the pretty much the same as a much cheaper Windows box.

These days, I make my living as a system integrator. I support Windows and Macs, but specialize in Macs-- slightly difficult because my Mac clients seldom need me. I own several Macs and a couple PCs, but my main machines are a G4 and an iBook-- after a long day dealing with Windows (which "just stops working" from time to time), it's damned nice to come home and use my Macs (which "just work"). In my experience, more often than not, people who have really used both OSes for an appreciable amount of time prefer the Mac.

Do you kid a really big favor. Don't push college. I cracked my head up against the wall for 6 years trying to be an Electrical Engineer. If you think homework is bad in high school, that is ALL you get as an engineering major. Unfortunately for me, I never did enough of it to be able to do well on the tests.

I got good at math and physics in high school by exploring them in-depth on my own. The Univeristy I attended had 10 week terms, so there was absolutely no time to explore anything. It was like I was in hell, I could understand the concepts, but all they grade on is busywork.

Had I had a better guidance councillor, the would have told me that Engineering is in fact ALL busywork. You work things our analytically, lay out entire designs ahead of time, and do everything in your power to prevent the unexpected. This was completely counter to what I needed in a career.

I did finally drop out, and took up a job running computer networks. I am happy with what I do, it doesn't require a degree, every day is a fire to extinguish, and I have to maintain a complete mental image of the entire system I'm working on.

If I had to stop doing networking, I think I'd open up my own store, or a resteraunt, or just about anything where I would be "the owner". That guy who has been there since the beginning, gets to make all the snap judgments, and is right all the time because HE OWNS THE PLACE.

You don't need a Mac to configure these things these tools work fine on all platforms with a JVM.

Check and see if your school has a wireless network installed. (My Example) If they have such a network set up, invest in a good laptop (I would recommend an IBM ThinkPad or a Macintosh Powerbook, pick your poison) and make sure it has wireless capabilities (most networks these days are 802.11b). Trust me, it's a great investment. Heck, I'm posting this from my wireless laptop in lecture right now!

Well, kinda.

The project hasn't been updated in a couple of months, and it breaks Ethernet bridging, but the idea of running Linux on a sleek little gadget from Apple is still geeky enough to be interesting.

The Airport is great, but to configure it you need to be running OS 9 or X - horrid news for a high school that I was working at a few months ago. Every machine was running OS 8.6, including the one teacher-owned laptop. Every student-owned laptop was Windows-based.
I brought in my laptop (which runs Debian) and gave the Airport Base Station Configurator a try, but to no avail.

So - cool device, but it needs to be easier to configure or modify.
