Condolences?
The guy spent roughly 5 minutes a day on overage. That sounds to me like he wasn't wasting anymore time than the rest of us do. If the guy can focus on a goal while doing what most people would do while taking breaks, then kudos to him!

Re:That happens when its BOTH high-fat and high-ca
If you consider what the most fast and junk food are:
pizzas, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, sandwiches, kebab rolls, baguettes, kfc's fried chicken, pan pizzas, nuggets and so on.. like this illustrative image shows. That picture strangely makes me very hungry...

That happens when its BOTH high-fat and high-carb
If you consider what the most fast and junk food are:
pizzas, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, sandwiches, kebab rolls, baguettes, kfc's fried chicken, pan pizzas, nuggets and so on.. like this illustrative image shows. It's not only high-fat thats the problem, but also high-carb. I never really crave for high-fat but low-carb food and my body feels a lot better with low-carb food. It's the combination of high-fat and high-carb that is bad, and leaves all the fat in your body because carbs burn first.

Re:the correct solution
You might not be able to push a new server and new ways of working, but perhaps you could push a new service. Look into dropbox, and try selling it as backup, revision control, remote access, and the ability to easily transfer files with clients. Don't sell it as a fix to the son's problems, but a way for him to be productive outside the office as well as in. Appeal to the company being left behind technically if they don't start using cloud services for backup and revision control (with dropbox, the files will be backed up on Amazon's EC2 servers.) It runs on Mac, Linux, and even Windows, so all the systems can utilize the tool.
I would also spend some time working on my resume.

Re:ha ha suckers!!!
You should try Live Mesh.
Not a troll! I am serious -- I use it all the time. I use it to sync files between several computers AND Microsoft's servers, so I have a backup of anything important "in the cloud," accessible by Web browser if I ever need it.
I've been doing that with dropbox on my ubuntu box

Re:I really hate the GIMP UI changes.
I like using GIMP's image window fullscreen. Mostly because I work on large images, so I like to be able to see as much of the image as possible. Zooming and panning constantly is a waste. The separate-windows model GIMP currently has means that I have to carefully size the window to not be full-screen, but a little bit smaller & carefully position the windows to the sides. Only then can I see both the image and the tools. That is moronic.
I agree, stop using a window manager that doesn't support window snapping or doesn't support having simple built in features like "Keep window on top".
If you must use a crappy OS however, I did write something to get around this under Windows, http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58565/ontop-setup.exe - uses ctrl + space to set the active window to stay "always on top".

Really? Because my library begs to differ. Here's a folder that's managed by iTunes: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/87843/40.png

Shameless Plug
Torrent and Info: http://pastie.org/706872 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/457451/ide.vmdk.torrent Because making an account on some shady website that's exploiting the situation seems wrong.

Re:dropbox?
I've also had good experience with dropbox. I share not only between computers, but also project files between developers. It supports file versioning and all the other stuf you'd expect out of a VCS. Download and upload speeds are consistently fast for both American and European team members. I'm running this on windows and linux flavors.
Hmm, shameless plug - you get yourself and me an extra 250 MB free storage by using this link to sign up... https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTExNzI1MzE5

Re:dropbox?
You don't need to, dropbox already uses encryption for both transfer and storage.
-
Re:dropbox?
Dropbox's beta builds have LAN sync.
-
Re:Dropbox
Another shameless attempt to get some free space: Click here and sign up and we'll both get an extra 250 MB.
Seriously though. Dropbox is great, I was dubious about it at first but it's so very useful and it just works.

Dropbox
"Free for Windows, Mac, and Linux"
Creates a folder that is kept in sync between different computers. You can share files with other dropbox users too via shared folders. 2GB or so of space is free. It also keeps multiple versions of files so you can go back to a previous version of a file if you need to.
I don't have any affiliation with the company, other than being a satisfied user.

Click on me! https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTI
No no, clearly you need to click on MY link.
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTI0MDY5MDU5
Not only will you and I both get an extra 250MB of space, but you will help me keep more precious photos of my children in the cloud, for FREE!
I currently run Dropbox on 3 computers-- One Ubuntu Server, one Windows Desktop and one Windows Laptop. It's nice to have the same set of files everywhere. Not only is it convenient to have the same set of files on all 3 machines, but I like the redundancy offered by the distributed storage-- It's on 3 drives here and is also hosted in the cloud.
I can take the laptop with me to show the family photos & videos to my folks. But the files are still kept safe at home and at dropbox.com.
I might also install it on another machine outside of the San Francisco quake zone, to offer one more point of redundancy.

Dropbox
I personally use Dropbox for a similar type of setup (Ubuntu 9.10, OS X 10.6, XP). It uses SSL, but would most likely not meet your requirements of allowing you control of the source code that sits on their servers. It provides 2 GB of storage for free with the option to upgrade to 50 or 100 GB for $9.99 or $19.99 respsectively.

Dropbox
https://www.dropbox.com/ will give you 2gb of free space. It'll keep all files in your "dropbox folder" synchronized on all computers where it is installed. It works on Linux, Mac, and Windows. A video on installing Dropbox on Linux from The Linux Journal's Shawn Powers is here: http://www.linuxjournal.com/video/dropbox-linux

Dropbox
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTE5NDk3Mzg5 Use this link and both you AND I get an extra 250 megs space. The first 2 gigs cost nada.

Re:KeePass - fantastic software.
I've been using KeePass for years, and recently started using the portable version coupled with DropBox - viola, access to my passwords from anywhere, all nice and synchronized up! On my own PCs I have the DropBox client running all the time, and if I'm elsewhere and can't get a remote connection to my home PC, I can temporary download my files from the DropBox website without needing the client.
-
Re:Truecrypt
Personally, I use a KeePass database which is synced between multiple computers online through DropBox. As long as you're accessing from computers that you own (win/linux/OSX) or online, you should be fine.
There is also an iphone keepass viewer available for online files, including through Drop Box (for the old 1.x format).

Re:Windows Live Mesh
LiveSync is better for syncing between personal computers (no storage limit and no need for central server). Mesh also has bugs around deleted, renamed, moved files etc. If you want a Mesh-like solution (i.e., with centralized storage) try: http://dropbox.com/ (it handles complex file operations perfectly and intelligently [unlike Mesh]).

DropBox for the win
Check out dropbox. It syncs files, built in encryption, platform independent.
