How about an Amiga?
How about an Amiga?
Many network stations in non-major [not NYC/LA/etc] markets still use NewTek's Amiga-based Video Toaster and Toaster/Flyer systems (The Toaster is a 4-input digital switcher/SEG, the Flyer is the NLE addition) for editing and effects. The Toaster comes with Lightwave (it is a bit slow on the Amiga systems, but it is still a great 3D package). You can pick up full Toaster/Flyer systems on ebay for cheap, and they do wonders. Then, you can transfer flyclips (the Flyer's video clip format) to your PC or Mac and do compositing/rotoscoping/insertion work on it using Mirage and/or Lightwave 3D if you need to.

The Amiga may well outlive us all. -

Laptops need redsignging
Ok, so since Laptops were first created, their whole idea was to be a way someone could do work remotely or in areas where having a desktop was hard or near imposibe for one reason or another. in 2003 "November 2003 survey of Penn State University undergraduates found that freshmen were more likely to own laptops than upperclassmen. Of 1,838 respondents, 73.7 percent own a desktop, 32.2 percent own a laptop, 9.2 percent own both, and 3.4 percent own neither." http://pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stor
i es/2004/08/23/focus1.html
"t). Currently, one-quarter of Americans own a laptop or notebook computer (23 percent)" http://www.thegoodsteward.com/article.php3?article ID=1513
What does this tell us? it says that laptops are becoming more and more popular, and as they become more and more popular, there is a bigger drive towards creating the "ultimite laptop"
As far as i see it, Apple and IBM are the only good laptop companies. i know thats a dramatic statement, but look at it, any laptop over 6LBS is WAY TOO HEAVY to carry around. Most HP/Compaq laptops are 7 to 9 lbs. Most dells are in that same range.
what the laptop industry needs is a re-working of laptops. Sony has just released the X505 VAIO laptop, this laptop is built in the way all laptops should be built. It weighs a mear 1.73lbs WITH battery in it, and has enough power to run almost anything exept games and video editing.( But trying to play games on a laptop is just stupid anyway, small screen and no mouse or full keypad) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cate gory=31558&item=6736232824&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW (sorry if i am not suposed to link to auctions, it was the only english page i could find since its a japanese laptop)
The new centrino chips are amazing, to put it simply. If you put a 2ghz Pentium M into a desktop and slap on a liquid cooling system, you can overclock it to be way more powerful then a 3.46EE or even a 3.8ghz P4. The pentium M is just years ahead of its time, and people having figured it out yet! Its kinda like black lotus for all you magic players! -
Nothing useful from old troll, GeckoXFirst off, none of the issues he cites are in any way new, these problems are old hat.
... The guys just now digging into ActiveX and has decided flat out that MFC is the way to do it? Strike 1, and strike 2. Not immediately dropping it and moving on to something more suitable, you're out man.Great apology, GeckoX. Would you mind telling us how using ATL would help and why those mechanisms have not been put back into MFC? The problem is seven years old because Microsoft did a bad job seven years ago and has not fixed it yet.
It's all too obvious that this article was posted because it fits the anti-MS slant quite well.
... this article brings absolutely NOTHING to the table except another excuse to bash MS and an OLD MS technology.Once again, enlighten us, GeckoX. What nasty piece of crap does Microsoft have to replace this old nasty? Tell us the wonders of
.NET single sign on or something. The author has done a service to people contemplating this kind of work. The neophyte designer should know the general reputation of the players involved and that comes from looking at old stuff too, especially if it's currently used. People in the past have been suckered by M$'s huge PR budget, which includes astroturfing of discussion forums.
Gecko, the name rings a bell. Let's look at what we find in your posting history. Oh yes, lots of M$ apologizing and insult for Slashdot readers:
- Here you are telling me I'm stupid for not wanting to pay MP3 fees. Must be why your name rings a bell.
- Here he acts as if you can audit DiBold's paperless and hoplessly insecure M$ based voting machines. This kind of undermines trust in GeckoX security advice if telling us that ActiveX could be used was not bad enough.
- The idea being that a happy geek is a productive geek, but the problem of course was that no geek could ever truly be happy as they can never hope to bag a spouse, let alone get laid and have kids.. Nice insult, your sense of humor on April first is different to say the least.
- Here he is telling us
.NET and C# are the tools for the job. He must mean every job, but mono is impossible. He must have enjoyed the chance to beg for M$ compatibility, swipe at a free project and say M$ rocks all in one thread. - Bash Java this seems to be a consistent thread. Praise M$ efforts, bash others at the same thing.
- Claiming Microsoft invented Virtual Desktops and Pagers, give me a break.
- Open Source is not secure, he tells us, as if OpenBSD did not exist.
- Of course IIS is wonderful. I suppose that's why banks using it upload trojans to IE users.
It's easy to find junk like this from GeckoX using a Google search, geckox slashdot. Thanks for playing.

Re:Zaurus SL-5500
If you just want an organizer you could go for a VR3 and get good battery life. Forget the expansion cards though. And devolepment is static.
The other option is a Sharp Zaurus, but forget long battery life. The newer models are better, but well out of your price range.
Or you could try finding and IPAQ- iPAQ H3100, H3600,H3700,H3800,H3900,H5400, and H5500 series. Or SIEMENS Simpad: CL4, SL4, SLC, T-Sinus, GMate YopY, M&N Ramses. Still same problem with battery and usually less choices on expansion cards.
Basically you need a device that runs GPE or Opie, or comes with Qtopia. -
Zaurus on ebay
The Zaurus SL-5500 fits your requirements for hardware and software (SD and CF expansion; runs linux and java natively; hardware fully supported by OS) but it's battery life is nowhere near double digit. With a good battery, I've had about 3 hours of solid use per charge, or somewhere a little less than a week of just standby. Plus, it started at $400 retail, so now on ebay it's running at $100 for a starting bid, only to go up. There's one on ebay now for about $165. If you're willing to go over budget slightly, that's a good choice.

Is eBay the Promised Land?

Definitely individuals!
In fact, a friend of mine does make a living off ebay.
A couple of hours a day of doing what she likes (well, probably a bit more now as she's painting two pictures a day) leaves her enough time for her family and brings enough money for their needs.
It is actually quite simple.
All you need is talent, energy, determination and an acute business sense.
Way to go, Osnat! -
Re:"eBay consignment shop"
21st century pawn shop
Funny you should mention that. While driving around in Dallas, we passed by a pawn shop that had a help wanted sign for an "eBay Consultant", or some such. Looks like they're still online: Home > eBay Stores > Uncle Dan's Pawn Shop, but they don't have much listed. I suspect they wanted someone to work for little of nothing, in return for 'net access or something like that. -
How about THIS GUY....
"* - Allegedly"
He appears to be collecting video tapes of rock videos, performances and interviews. And by video tapes, I do mean low quality VHS. Then he'd just sequentually burn them to DVD-Rs and sell them for full retail price.
He's got to have the fat wallet from this operation. And, of course, if you buy one thing, he'll offer you several other items after the purchase.
I see that other people's negative feedbacks don't do any good, so I'll report him to eBay for violating the CR-R/DVD-R policy, and for selling video he recorded that he does not own.

This guy is far more cost effective...Copycats are out!!!
High bidder will get to place an ad for exactly one week on this man's forehead. His name is Whag, he is a co-worker of mine. Whag gets around alot, a pretty social guy. Aside from working here at the office (where he interacts with about 20 people a day), Whag also volunteers for his local fire company. On top of that, he spends a significant amount of time at the local hosey, and you know that ad's just going to look that much better after a couple of beers. Overall, the ad on his forehead would probably reach anywhere from 20-100 people per day. Any actual placing of an ad on whag's forehead is entirely at whag's discretion, and i must warn you that i haven't told him that i'm selling his forehead on ebay, so he may be a little opposed to the idea at first. But with a little prodding and some cold hard cash, i'm sure it'll all work out.

I like this auction better
The billboard apparently has yet to be notified of his participation: Whag the billboard

You think that's bad? These guys are auctioning their co-worker's forehead off on eBay , and he doesn't even know yet.

Its nothing new.
I first heard about advertising on people's foreheads in 2003 in this article.
Although it does look like this guys current $15,099 is slightly better than the £88.20 offerend in the Guardian article.
"The agency, Cunning Stunts, is offering students up to £88.20 a week to wear a corporate logo on their head for a minimum of three hours each day. The brand or product message will be attached by a vegetable dye transfer and the students will be paid to leave the logos untouched." -

It has over 100 bids and a price of over $15,000. Still not enough for me to give up my dignity though. I'm sure most of those bids are bogus. -

Re:eBay announcementOne of the posts I found amusing was the announcement of eBay which was apparently originally called "AuctionWeb".
Apparently nothing, as one of the first users of the service, even before I become a formal member in 1996, eBay had a way different feel in the early days than it does now. It really was a bargain hunter's and hobbist's paradise before eBay got greedy for listing fees and starting adding stuff like "Buy It Now" items and storefronts. Now, the former AuctionWeb's visibility causes many items to be bid above and beyond market value anymore.
(And before any of you wannabe economists try to correct me on my concept of "market value," what you are thinking of only exists in an aggregate, transparent economy free of perverting influence which eBay no longer is. eBay prices are no longer on the median of the supply curve.)

Re:just go super cheap laptop with broken monitorGet a cheap laptop with a broken monitor (no that isn't mine, just an example, there are tons of those usually on ebay), then get a cheap monitor. A keyboard with a cheap protectorwould be nice. And whatever 12 dollar laser mouse you can find. Boom, 200 dollar set up that is has a battery backup, wireless connectivity to your house, and any 1 part can be replaced at nominal charge. You can move the laptop indoors when it's inhospitable, and the cover will be enclosed so you shouldn't have too many problems with it.
Now pardon me, I have to go bring up Hitler on a usenet discussion that is showing too much civility.

Re:Belkin! Belkin! Belkin!
Well, that was software (parental control, no less) working in conjunction with the router -- not the router itself -- to blame. The customer paid the typical price of "free" commecial software.
So, Belkin is into spyware. Who isn't these days in one form or other?
Why in the world would I want to trust them? They've shown contempt for the consumer.
Better start stockpiling your dollars under your bed. Who you gonna trust? -

You can pick up a used unit, or if that disappears, just wait long enough and the Magma units show up from time to time. Now if you demand a new unit, or like-new, that you can have right away, and cheaply...well, sorry, you're breaking a variation of the fast-cheap-right rule.

I can buy a 47mW green laser pointer on ebay.
I can find a 50mW one or even a 190mW one.
Note that these class IIIb lasers that *will* damage the eye faster than the blink reflex kicks in (read: fraction of a second) on a "sweep" -- no monocular required; and can even cause damage if viewed indirectly (reflected). -
Funny you should ask...
I'm selling a much cheaper solution with 2 PCI slots on Ebay right now. If you're interested, I also have an extra docking station available.

Re:Virus??As an interesting new way of distributing music that people will still pay for is http://www.weedshare.com/.
You get to listen to the file a couple times. If you like it, you can pay a small fee for the song to be permanently unlocked and put it onto whatever medium you want it on, burn it to a CD, throw it on your iPod, whatever.
The best part of it is that it encourages people to share the music. Send the weeded file to your friends, they can preview it just like you did. If they like it, they can unlock it by paying a small fee. The catcher is that part of that small fee goes towards the artist directly and another part goes back to the person who referred the weed file to the friend.
This solves a number of issues, such as how to generate marketing for your songs, and lowers the cost in buying your music since by actually purchasing it, you have the potential to make a little bit yourself as well. Seems like win-win pretty much all around.
EQ magazine ran a little column in their current issue that bascially outlines all of this. They included the following links to check out:
Personally, I find the idea intriguing, will be watching to see where it goes, and hope the best for it.

Re:Good times.
Wish I still had that box, bet it would fetch some bling-bling on Ebay
:)
The only 128K Mac I could find on eBay was priced at $406, which seems horribly overpriced to me (I've seen 128K Macs bundled with dot matrix printers in local want ad magazines for $25 to $50), even if it does still boot. Everymac.com says its list price was $2500, though the street price was closer to $1800, IIRC. I bought a 512K Mac (2nd generation) for $1299 in 1985. Comparable PC clones were $1500 to $2500.
Still have it, still boots, albeit from an external floppy drive (the internal Sony died after 12 years of use). For about 10 years it served in my recording studio doing MIDI sequencing and acting as a front end for an Ensoniq Mirage sampling keyboard (via Digidesign Sound Designer I and an Opcode MIDI interface).
I've also managed to collect another 512K (free), a Plus (also free...plucked from a neighbor's garbage), an SE ($5 at a thrift shop), and an SE/30 ($10 at another thrift shop and now running NetBSD). Then there's my collection of Mac IIs, Quadras, and early PowerPCs, currently languishing in a storage facility in Boston.
Yeah, I'm a Mac zealot, even though I'm typing this on a Toshiba WinXP laptop (hey, it was cheap) and I work for a company that supports Windows desktops and servers (though we run Linux on Cobalt Raq4s and Acer beige boxes as our internal servers).

Re:Finally - make it an impulse purchase
But I want a "Cube", and they are still selling for "much bucks". I'm hoping this thing will be a new cube, or at least something I wouldn't be embarassed to have on my desk, unlike the current eMac. And being able to plug it in to my KVM> Bonus. I'll hide it behind my desk and tell my boss its the new Blue Man Group Linux...
Here you go
Hiding a Cube is a bad idea... Heat management required that it be out in the open. The old G4 Tower, on the other hand, did everything the Cube did and then some, while fitting nicely pretty much anywhere you would put a PC tower. Looks like you could snag one for as little as $250 or so if you get lucky with the bidding.
