Check out this pricing!!!!
I could not believe this auction listing. $41 for INFORMATION about how to get a MINI iPod for free? I see those at times selling for like a buck or two on eBay and some poor sucker biting. But this has had 18 bids!!
-
Real reason?I don't mean to diss the Mac crowd here, but how much of this shortage is due to the fact that the minis have 4GB microdrives in them, which by themselves cost more than $250 ?

Re:Yet again: Where in the world is Joseph GradeckDid some searching - found some more information, delved into a bunch of online public records databases. Have yet to find a reliable address or phone number, but I did find his personal website, which didn't exist before (last time I did any searches), so this is a good find. However, following links, etc - it seems like the site may be dead - I am hoping WHOIS will tell me something.
Hmm - looked up "gradecki.com" on google, led me here:
They look like a used parts/computer ebay seller. The site haad an ebay comment from Mr. Gradecki - apparently his ebay ID is cscientist (email of "joe@gradecki.com") - here's hoping my email to him gets answered.
His site, BTW, holds links to PDFs of the magazine - but the links go nowhere. I am hoping to find out more about this from him.
Looks like today I may have gotten closer...

Re:Favorite quote from TFA
"Microsoft was kind of pushing Passport for a problem that didn't exist..."
That's one of the biggest problems that I've ever had with Microsoft'sI think that more or less hits the nail on the head. This is aside from the downtime issue, which is embarassing, and privacy issues, which are disturbing. On the privacy/downtime note, the Liberty Alliance may be vapor currently, but the idea of a "federated" system sounds much better to me. It's not a problem I have with Microsoft, rather it's a problem I have with giving all of my personal information to a single organization to put into a central respository.
.NET passport system: the idea of putting all of that personal information into a central repository, especially a private central repository.History has shown us time and time again that it is very possible for even the most secure systems to be compromised, over and over again. Microsoft does not necessarily in many views have a high security track record, and there then is no way that I personally am willing to allow my personal information (including some financial information, as eBay (at least at one point) is one of the companies that signed on to the
.NET passport system) to be put in the hands of a private enterprise's systems, making it among other things an appealing target, paired with the fact that it's Microsoft, doubling the appeal if not more so for some. -
Where are you going today?

IBM eBay Store
Follow this link to IBM's Authorized eBay store.
Heavily discounted new laptopts, directly from IBM. Usually 35 bucks for next day air.
They set up this site to clear old stock, old as in 3-6 mos.
There's also the IBM Ebay Global financing eBay (seach the eBay stores section) store, they do all refurbs. That's were I got my X22 almost 2 years ago, still runnning without any problems.
Disclaimer: Thinkpads are my favorite laptops.
Good Luck. -
how reliable is e-bay? gold boullion and bars
I have never purchased anything on e-bay but I have always wondered about reliability. For instance, I wonder about purchasing gold and silver on ebay (Examples here, here, and here.) How does anyone know these things are for real?
I know one guy I met online who was investing in gold by buying these bars but how do you even know they are what the ad says they are? Who would invest big money using these bars?
--OFF-TOPIC--
Does anyone here invest in gold (as investment)? If yes, what do you use? And have you invested in gold indices on stock markets? Do you know the symbols for them? Thanks...

James-Bond-Bad-Guy hide-out
The coolest thing on the Bidboy site was this cool classic James-Bond-Bad-Guy hide-out. Unfortunately seller's other auctions do not include henchman with big metal teeth, or disposable uniformed drones, or pool of sharks with lasers attached to their heads. So it's a bit of a fixer-upper.
-
What about auctions like these?
Would an auction for a unique tie get shut down by these guys?
-
Re:amazingBah! -- that's not an imaginary girlfriend.
But this is.
I don't know what's more warped: that someone has the balls to auction it or that someone would actually buy a 2nd hand item of this sort. Can you say eeeew!?
-
So where else is there to go?
I liked ebay when it was just people selling second hand items, businesses selling surplus etc. Ever since the ebay business model sprung to life ebay imho sucks.
I was just saying this yesterday (not for the first time.) Are there any other sites out there that offer the same quality, quantity, and prices that eBay used to?
As for high shipping charges, you can complain to eBay about excessive shipping charges . Especially when you have the postage on the envelope in front of you, you know they're ripping you off. -

Re:Does the metal become more dense?
What happens is the coin ends up _thicker_ than before. Because it is thicker, the coin in turn becomes smaller. The mass is indeed the same before and after.
There is no exotic atomic manipulation going on. Not that people have tried (aka alchemy).
Here are his ebay auctions -
Re:Does the metal become more dense?
The coins do in fact weigh the same after the shrinking. They actually get a little fatter in the middle but with a smaller diameter. Take a look at one of his e-bay auctions and he has a little explanation on there and a pic!

As seen on Ebay
Check out the picture and prices of the some of his work on ebay

Re:Economy?
First of all, since you didn't buy from Dell either you might as well ask 'How does Dell compete with that?'
Secondly, there are plenty of used Macs. While not any cheap G4s, there are dozens of G3's, either towers, iMacs or eMacs. And OSX runs fine on my iMac SE DV w/ G3@400 Mhz. Mind you, I'm not playing Halo on it. But if all you've got to spend is $265 you'd have to accept less than cutting edge. -
$500 is waaaay too much..
This is probably the worst article I've seen posted on making digital picture frames. I apologize if that hurts anyone's feelings, but a lot more thinking could have gone into the design and parts.
For starters, why not go to the flea market or ebay and pick up an ancient laptop? This gives you a cpu, motherboard, hard drive, network interface, and a display. I was able to find old, functional laptops for under $150 on ebay.
I would pull the motherboard and mount it against the back of the display, then order a premium, custom built frame from a picture frame shop for ~$25-$100. You could be cheap and build your own, but $100 should get something nice and elegant. Another option would be to just pick up a pre-built frame and put in an insert cut to your spec.
For people not up to the skill level of configuring GNAA/Linux, they could simply boot to Windows and set their SHELL variable to a screen saver's executable for cycling pictures. There is one built-in to XP, but many freebies are out there for previous builds of Windows.
Personally, I would opt for a wireless NIC and mount a share where the pictures are to be stored. That way I could simply copy new pictures over to the system from my main computer.

Vinyl-Based Videodisc
The apex of multimedia vinyl technology in the 1980s was probably RCA's videodisc system. This vinyl-based analog video system competed against early Laserdisc.
Of *course* people are still fleabaying them. You can even get the Original Star Wars Trilogy on black vinyl videodisc... -

Re:all I wantI don't really care about all the fancy features, just give me play, stop, fast forward, and the ability to transfer recorded video files off the machine.
Is there such a thing out there with assembly not required? I just can't stand the idea of paying a monthly fee for a relatively simple device masquerading as a service.
Get a Series 1 TiVo off of ebay. Put in a network card and don't subscribe to the TiVo service. You might want to find a 1.3 version of the OS as, IIRC, it doesn't nag you about the lack of service.

You're asking that question on the wrong site.

Re:This isn't nice but...
Seriously though, look at the rise in personals on popular websites (/. included), dating services, and things like shopping on eBay (39,000 hits for "shoes"! - wonder whose wife is buying all those).

Re:Try this for something similar...Have you tried those two? I've never heard too much about Deadlands, so it didn't look to exciting to me. What about PvP Frag? Does it add anything good?
I only said the two expansions because Pvp and Deadlands weren't expansions so much as supplements.
For anyone interested, there are a couple of people selling Frag on eBay. (In fact, ones going for $30+! Wow! Maybe I should sell mine.
;) ) -

Re:Why PDF? And why bogus claims?
This may not register to a slashdot reader, but Adobe's Read-Aloud function (text to speech) is a major, major selling point for some less-technically knowledgeable folk.
I was able to pay my mortage as well as my dedicated server costs for two years just selling CDs of many, many books on ebay with that function, and I'm pretty sure the PG 2 guys saw that happening. (The PG license allows you to do what I did, and I do give back to the project, and, no, I'm not proud of the listing, but ugly, garish, centered font schemes work on ebay where nothing else really does.)
If PG 2 sounds like a scam... I don't think so; there are 48,500 not-on-PG books that you're paying $8.95 a year to access... this might just be worthwhile.
(And, yeah, PDF sucks, but it's all most people know.) -

This guy must be smoking crack...
if he thinks he can get $3.9 million for something he bought for $300,000. Based on the article discussing his original plans for the facility as well as his recent ebay purchases, I am concluding that:
- The $500K he collected in donations to supposedly turn the place into a camp probably paid for a new coat of paint and an extra-large can of Lysol (minus "operating expenses" such as a new Town Car, some hookers and a tractor trailer full of gin)
- The extent of the modifications he has made to the place are probably (I say probably since although he purchased a camera flash that's perfect for illuminating dark underground spaces, he doesn't see fit to provide you with a couple fucking pictures of what you're getting for your $3.9 million) limited to some impromptu drunken demolition using the hammer/concrete breaker.
I say screw this guy. To me it's juts wrong that that this guy took donations and is now trying to make millions.
By the way, I'm not sure anyone else has mentioned this but:
- He already tried to sell the site on ebay back in October of 2003 for the same cool $3.9 million
- He had a web site until around the end of 2002 at www.camptitan.com that shilled for child labor in exchange for food and lodging -

Re:Other items.
Somewhat off-topic, but I always make a Self-Note "response to feedback" to the ones I receive and include the item's title so even though the page expires later I can (or others, too) still see what I bought/sold in past auctions..
